The map, based on 18 months’ worth of satellite data, shows very high levels of NO2 above major European and North American cities and across much of north-east China. South-east Asia and Africa also have raised concentrations of the gas due to their burning of vegetation. “Ship tracks are visible in some locations,” says Steffen Beirle, one of the research team at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. “Look at the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean between the southern tip of India and Indonesia.” Although NO2 is formed naturally by lightning and by microbes in the ground, it is also released into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels by power plants, heavy industry and vehicles. Large quantities of the gas can cause respiratory problems and lung damage, and can also contribute to harmful ozone forming near ground level.
Obama has commented on helping poor nations to develop clean technologies but as you can see, it is not the poor countries that harm the planet the most. It is the rich large countries doing all of the damage. We first need to look at home and prevent the devastation that has been ongoing. United States, China, and Europe need to change the way they live first before they can start criticizing other poorer nations that only amount to about 11% of emissions around the world. Our polar ice caps have lost nearly a third of its size from 1981 to 2003(NASA Data). Your plan is to reduce amounts of emissions by the year 2050. By your logic, we won’t have a polar ice cap left. There won’t be anything to save. The climates around the world are already beginning to shift. Melting glacial water changes the composition of the ocean and changes the weather patterns around the world. Yearly Warming Temperatures from NASA

My partner and I run a mom and pop tiny R&D company. We develop systems and teach physicians, psychologists, etc. how to use the system to treat head injuries. Those who are daring enough to user our system have said they are “stunned” and “incredulous” at the results. (Of course it doesn’t work for everybody; nothing does.) We also designed a system to speed tissue healing and reduce inflammation that echoes what NASA uses only much less expensive and equally or more effective. Both are non-invasive, leave nothing in the body as does medication, and are reasonably fast-acting and easy to use, and much less costly than any other conventional or medical treatment.
There has been one book written about the system (Larsen, Stephen. (2006) The Healing Power of Neurofeedback.), a double-issued of a professional journal (Hammond, Cory: Journal of Neurotherapy, 2006, number 2-3) and a subsequent monograph from that journal. We have users in every continent, perhaps in the low hundreds in number.
The bad news is that our systems are so different from anything psychological or medical in use today that those who haven’t used them are dead set against their use as “impossible” or potentially harmful. Even I, who developed the system, said to myself for over 10 years that these can’t work – in spite of the benefits I and others saw every day. This system for helping the head injured is genuinely new in science.
We had one promising NIH-sponsored pilot study on head injury, published in a reputable journal; yet NIH declined to sponsor another one because of “design defects” in the original study that they approved. We don’t have the prestige to champion our own studies.
After recently training someone from Hong Kong in the use of the system he offered us a chance to conduct a study in China with their head injured earthquake victims. They would supply all the experimenters, statistical and experimental design help, data analyzers, food, transportation, and lodging for us. We are tentatively scheduled to spend next October, 2009 in China to conduct the study.
However, we have our own head-injured troops in every VA and military hospital in the world. I would much rather ask you for help for just as much support as China will offer. I’ll design the study and let the study results demonstrate its value. Please help nascent technologies; keep it American; and discover something new and effective that will help our veterans.

Hi, all,
I would like to ask your help in a journalistic research project, which I hope will result in an article or book. I expect to have to ask this question of thousands of people in order to find the few who fit the profile I’m seeking.
I’m trying to find people who overcame a personal bias against black people in order to vote for Barack Obama for president. I’m looking for individual stories of how people moved away from bias they grew up with, to the point where the US could elect a black president. This change could have occurred gradually, or quickly for this election.
I'm looking for people willing to talk seriously about their own bias, to canvassers who ran into biased people and talked them past it, to people who voted for Obama and didn't dare tell a racist boss or relative, to anyone else who has a direct story about this change in attitude in America.
So please, if you can help, 1. write back to me with your own stories or just your contact information, but even if you don't fit, 2. pass this request to your list of friends. Ask them to pass it on to their friends.
I'm a journalist with decades in newspapers. I'm a former foreign correspondent who covered the collapse of the Soviet Union, and did not misquote Soviet leader Gorbachev. I promise to record your statements accurately.
Please, help me document this monumental change in our country.
Thank you.

With the high cost of gasoline and diesel fuel impacting costs for automobiles, trucks, buses and the overall economy, a Temple University physics professor has developed a simple device which could dramatically improve fuel efficiency as much as 20 percent.
According to Rongjia Tao, Chair of Temple's Physics Department, the small device consists of an electrically charged tube that can be attached to the fuel line of a car's engine near the fuel injector. With the use of a power supply from the vehicle's battery, the device creates an electric field that thins fuel, or reduces its viscosity, so that smaller droplets are injected into the engine. That leads to more efficient and cleaner combustion than a standard fuel injector, he says.
Six months of road testing in a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz automobile showed that the device increased highway fuel from 32 miles per gallon to 38 mpg, a 20 percent boost, and a 12-15 percent gain in city driving.
The results of the laboratory and road tests verifying that this simple device can boost gas mileage was published in Energy & Fuels, a bi-monthly journal published by the American Chemical Society.
"We expect the device will have wide applications on all types of internal combustion engines, present ones and future ones," Tao wrote in the published study, "Electrorheology Leads to Efficient Combustion."
Further improvements in the device could lead to even better mileage, he suggests, and cited engines powered by gasoline, biodiesel, and kerosene as having potential use of the device.
Temple has applied for a patent on this technology, which has been licensed to California-based Save The World Air, Inc., an environmentally conscientious enterprise focused on the design, development, and commercialization of revolutionary technologies targeted at reducing emissions from internal combustion engines.
According to Joe Dell, Vice President of Marketing for STWA, the company is currently working with a trucking company near Reading, Pa., to test the device on diesel-powered trucks, where he estimates it could increase fuel efficiency as much as 6-12 percent.
Dell predicts this type of increased fuel efficiency could save tens of billions of dollars in the trucking industry and have a major impact on the economy through the lowering of costs to deliver goods and services.
"Temple University is very excited about the translation of this new important technology from the research laboratory to the marketplace," said Larry F. Lemanski, Senior Vice President for Research and Strategic Initiatives at Temple. "This discovery promises to significantly improve fuel efficiency in all types of internal combustion engine powered vehicles and at the same time will have far-reaching effects in reducing pollution of our environment."

A prototype of the original device is available for photos in Dr. Tao's lab at Temple, while the current device being tested on the diesel trucks can be viewed by contacting STWA.

Joe Biden being chastised for saying something "true"? Now THAT is a new low. Well, no, it's not a NEW low, it's the same "low" the GOP has been using for years, which is a full-out-Karl Rove assault on truth itself.
It is simply TRUE that if one wants to humanely support the issue of special needs children, one SHOULD support stem cell research. PERIOD. And not only so as to intervene in the process of birth defects developing (I for one don't think special needs should be 'weeded out' of the human community) but primarily to pursue effective treatments and interventions in those needs and to mitigate the suffering they cause. Special needs children could live more beautiful and less painful lives with appropriate scientific advances, and I'm all for that. Stem cell research is some of the most profoundly impactful and promising research for such life-improving advance.
Now, of course part of what's happening here is that Palin is being used as a political bear-trap. She advances a position that HAS an alternative, but since her life story has a personal bearing on an issue, the voicing of the alternative can be called "sexist" or "a new low" as the trap is sprung. I realize Palin herself would probably rather shoot such prey, but the GOP is happy with trapping commenters from the left until they have to gnaw their own legs off to escape.
I for one will neither gnaw off my leg nor wait for Sarah to come shoot and dress me. I'm going to call pigs pigs--and Sarah's positions are pigs. McCain's positions are pigs. As frightening as the image might be, you can put lipstick on the McCain pig, but it's still a pig--it's still a policy disaster (one after another) leading to a still bleaker future than the one Bush/Rove/Cheney have left us with already.
McCain/Rove/Palin ain't catching this liberal in any jaws of death.
And remember everyone, to thank John McCain for turning yet another campaign into "The Karl Rove Show". PUTTING COUNTRY LAST AGAIN, John. Now THAT move is a definite PIG.
Here's more from Obama on his support for increased funding for research:
"...today, we are clearly under-investing in research across the spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines. Federal support for the physical sciences and engineering has been declining as a fraction of GDP for decades, and, after a period of growth of the life sciences, the NIH budget has been steadily losing buying power for the past six years. As a result, our science agencies are often able to support no more than one in ten proposals that they receive, arresting the careers of our young scientists and blocking our ability to pursue many remarkable recent advances. Furthermore, in this environment, scientists are less likely to pursue the risky research that may lead to the most important breakthroughs. Finally, we are reducing support for science at a time when many other nations are increasing it, a situation that already threatens our leadership in many critical areas of science.
**Please make a donation of at least $5 to support the future of scientists:** http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/main/Scientists4Obama
This situation is unacceptable. As president, I will increase funding for basic research in physical and life sciences, mathematics, and engineering at a rate that would double basic research budgets over the next decade. Sustained and predictable increases in research funding will allow the United States to accomplish a great deal. First, we can expand the frontiers of human knowledge. Second, we can provide greater support for high-risk, high-return research and for young scientists at the beginning of their careers. Third, we can harness science and technology to address the “grand challenges” of the 21st century: energy, health, food and water, national security, information technology, and manufacturing capacity."
