I'm wondering what other christian bloggers opinions are about Obama's recent comment in Turkey about the USA not being a christian nation? I think he's right in some ways that it's not defined by religion like some countries are, but christianity still permeates(sp?) the country very deeply. It may not officially be anything and that's fine, but it's an interesting idea to bring up. I know of many people who WOULD say the US is a Christian nation. I wrote another blog post about this and Obama's Christian t-shirts on my main website, but I'd like to know here what people's opinions are about this. It's something that' affects us all more than some of us might want to believe.

And of course, while any average idiot—except this one apparently—knows Allah is the same God prayed to and worshiped by Christians and Jews, we needn't require Pastor Arnie to understand these or other religions and cultures. Why? Because, despite his Doctor of Ministry degree, that brand of cultural sensitivity and theological understanding is anathema to a myopic and intellectually incurious fundamentalist. The pomposity of this self-righteous dolt notwithstanding, I'm always amazed by proselytizers who pray, prattle and pontificate with the arrogant assumption they know who God is rooting for—as if God has a stake or interest in a particular candidate.
Prayers like Pastor Arnie's are futile of course and as patently absurd as asking the almighty to intervene in the Superbowl. But the obvious silliness doesn't stop so many evangelicals from so frequently contending Republicans are the party of God and John McCain (R-Nazareth) is Christ's personally vetted nominee for President. Their presumption is as comical as their worldview is provincial. My personal hunch is that God doesn't much care about American electoral politics but, if s/he does, I doubt s/he'd be categorically opposed to a Democrat. Barack Obama is a Christian. He was "saved," he was baptized, and he was a regular congregant in a Church of Christ for over 20 years. Besides—from the right to universal health care, nondiscrimination, and racial/gender equality to the eradication of poverty, earning of a living wage, dealing with AIDS and tax relief for those who actually need it—Democrats and their standard-bearers have traditionally favored policies uniquely more suited for and geared towards the middle and working classes and the poor/disenfranchised. In other words, Obama's policies tend to support the very people that the foolish pastor's God named "the Salt of the Earth" in the best-selling book s/he "authored" thousands of years ago. Christ didn't say much in favor of the free market, unprovoked war, assault weapons for "hunting," or tax-cuts for the rich and he was completely silent on those "cardinal sins" of abortion and gay marriage. But he did have an abundance of opinions about equality, justice, compassion, tolerance, forgiveness and love, as well as leaving judgment of others to God and taking care of our neediest brothers and sisters. So frankly, Pastor Arnie, I still don't think God is rooting for either candidate, but if s/he is, given their agreement on the issues, my money's on Obama. I'll give you 5:1 odds on your money for McCain, but I'd call that a Fool's Bet. Matthew 25:40 "And the King answering shall say to them, 'Verily, I say to you, Inasmuch as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me.'"
I just got done watching the most terrifying movie I have ever seen. It had nothing to do with psycho killers, fiendish monsters or global warming. On the contrary, “Jesus Camp” is about regular people—just like you and me—whose primary purpose in life is practicing their “prophetic gifts” so that they can “take back America for Christ.” I did not know that Jesus ever lived in the U.S.
Don’t get me wrong—Jesus is cool—but just like with every religion, fanatics tend to see things in a different light. Maybe it’s their gifts.
“Kids On Fire Summer Camp,” a Charismatic or Pentecostal Christian sanctuary located in North Dakota, teaches dedicated Evangelical kids to become soldiers in “God’s Army,” hell bent on spreading the word of the Lord, whatever the cost. Sounds to me like another group of fanatics in another god’s army.

True Christians and our issues I am a Catholic Christian and I am saddened by the way our politicians have preyed on other Christians using fear and lies to give us a bad name. Its as if "Christian" is a dirty word in this country now a days. Republicans have hijacked Christians by making pretend they care about hot topic issues such as abortion and gay marriage. These issues may be very important to some Christians and debatable by others but never the less they are far outweighed by the mounds of other issues that I believe Jesus would want to see addressed by the candidates. Christians have to begin to open their eyes wider and take the focus off just these things alone expand their Jesus lens. They need to ask themselves one by one, on each individual problem needing to be addressed in this country; "What would Jesus do?" Then and only then do I believe we are being true to our faith while we are alone and secret in the voting booth with only God to answer to in November.
I oppose the vain repetition of the mantra of "Change". Constantly we hear these ubiquitous mottos of "Change We Must", "Change We Can", "Bring about real change". What kind of change is Obama talking about?
Is he talking about the change left in the pockets of Americans after numerous bank & insurance bailouts and a record Dow Jones drop of 777 points on the Jewish New Years Day?
Obama is asking us to believe in his version of change as if he is some political messiah ushering in his own kingdom. Who does he think he is?
First of all, I am glad I serve a god who does not change. His attributes and nature remain always the same. See Malachi 3:6, "I am the LORD, I change not." With God there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17.
God warns us of the danger of man-made change in Romans 1. In an age of apostasy and departure from God people will be obsessed with "change". There were people who changed the glory of the uncorruptible God. Then they changed th truth of God into a lie. Thidly, they changed the natural of the sexes and became sodomites. Finally, God gave these poeple up to their own destruction.
What was the problem with the change those people believed in? They did not like to retain God in their knowledge, they had a reprobate mind and they were filled with all unrighteousness.
True change, however, comes from God. God changes people in conversion. It is not a political change. It is an inward change that works itself out.
This change begins when a sinner is born again by trusting Jesus Christ, who died for sinners, so that we might be saved. To be saved means to have forgiveness of sins, to receive a new nature that pleases God, to have the hope of a bodily resurrection and eternal life.
Jesus Christ is asking us to believe on Him. Study John 3:16-36!
The Bible advises us: "Change We Must". Yes, we must repent - have a change of heart and mind. Jesus Christ calls us to repentance in Lk. 13:3, Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."
Once you are saved, God wants to change you. Change now means correction, Christian growth, sanctification. You are being changed daily by not conforming to this world, but being transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2. This means once you are saved it will change your thinking - your opinions, views, standpoint, perspective, etc.
Finally, you will be changed according to 1. Corinthians 15:51-55 when you receive a new glorified resurrection body that will not decay but we be like Christ Jesus.
The only real change I believe in comes throuugh Jesus Christ alone.

Listen up people: I propose we go ahead and take the sage advice of letting the market correct itself and make the righteous decision to spend 700 billion of our tax dollars on bailing out the innocent victims in this surging economic crisis: the hard-working souls who didn't make the conscious decision to gamble on greed. Wall St. can pay the piper, our government needs to make a serious effort to take care of everyday working Americans, the small business owners, Main St. fixtures and especially our service providers; the people who serve us our food, fix our cars and cut our hair. Trickle down does not work. Subsidizing the average American will do much more to sustain us as opposed to giving more money to people who already lost their own, and who really don't respect money in the first place or what it can do for the people who desperately need just a small amount to survive. Some recent examples on Wall St. have been proven to be incompetent at best and are much less deserving of our tax dollars than a family who's only dream was to put a roof over their child's head. Speculation and greed took some Americans to the top and now it's time for them to fall flat on their okoles. Whether we like it or not, eventually we all end up accepting responsibility for our own actions, it's always better to own up to our faults ASAP rather than continue the lies and denial. We're only human, Wall St., but at the end of the day, Jesus is an Obama supporter. "I am my brother's keeper."

Hari sabtu kemarin adalah hari yang paling menyenangkan bagi saya dan teman-teman saya. Bagaimana tidak senang, pikiran kami dibukakan betul-betul oleh renungan yang dibawahkan oleh seorang kakak Pembina. Seperti biasanya jam pertama hari sabtu sebelum semua pelajaran dimulai kami harus mendegarkan sharing Firman Tuhan dalam waktu yang tidak begitu lama.
Dalam sharing itu kami ada 7 orang. Biasa kelompok kumpul seperti ini kami sebut dengan kelompak Sel. Bukan kelompok persekutuan penjara Lho. Yang menarik dalam persekutuan sel ini kami semua diberikan kebebasan untuk berbicara dan mengemukakan pendapat kami secara blak-blakan didepan umum. </more>
Sebagaiman dikelompok ini berbagai kekuragan kami didongkrak. Dalam arti yang biasanya malu untuk berbicara didepan umum dipaksakan untuk berbicara sehingga dengan sendirinya keberaniaan itu muncul.
Saya teringat pada saat itu dengan seorang teman saya dalam kelompok ini, Nikolas namanya. Dia adalah salah seorang temanku yang paling malu untuk mengutarakan pendapatnya. Tapi alhasi, sangat dsyukuri pada saat itu dia begitu menikmati sehingga apapun yang terlintas diipikirannya dibeberkan begitu saja.
Bukan hanya Nikolas, ada juga temanku yang namanya Deni. Biasanaya dalam beberaa diskusi kelompok dia sangat malu untuk mengutarakan semua pendapatnya, namun kali ini tidak seperti itu. Dia memiliki keberaniaan yang luar biasa untuk berbicara.
Usaha Manusia Sia-Sia
Kalau diberi pertanyaan, apa yang dicari manusia di bumi ini? Tentunya semua kita akan menjawab mencari keselamatan di akhiran nanti bukan? Nah lantas yang menjadi pertanyaan berikutnya, usaha apa yang harus dilakukan oleh manusia untuk masuk ke surga nanti?
Pertanyaa ini yang dilontarkan oleh kakak Pembina dalam disikusi ini. Secara manusia yang belum paham betul dengan isi alkitab, kami semua team kelompok sel menjawab berbagai pertanyaan yang intinya alasan untuk kita bisa masuk ke surga nanti.
Menolong orang miskin, membantu anak terlantar, mengerjakan seluruh yang diperintahkan, mentaati seluruh isi firmannya, membantu papa mama ketika membutuhkan bantuan, taat pada guru kita disekolah, hormat-menghormat sesame anggota sahabat. Beberapa jawaban diataslah yang kami jawab untuk memberikan alasana untuk mengerjakan perbuatan agar kami bisa masuk ke surga nanti.
Tapi yang mengejutkan, kakak Pembina berbicara lain. Semua itu percuma dilakukan, karena sama sekalit tidak membawah kita kepada keselamatan. Kata Alkitab (tidak ingat persis dimana) bahwa semua manusia dibumi telah berdosa dan telah kehilangan kemuliaan Allah jadi sangatlah tidak layak duduk bersama-sama dengan bapak diakhirat nanti. Bapa sendiri menghendakai mereka yang bisa bersama-sama degnan dia adalah mereka yang hidupnya sempuran atau 100% kudus.
Kalau bapa minta yang sempurna demikiaan, adakah manusia dimuka bumi ini yang sempurna? Elia yang terangkat hidup-hidup saja dalam firman Tuhan mengatakan dia juga masih banyak memilik dosa.
Nah yang menjadi pertanyaan, bagaimana kita bisa diselamatkan. Jadi saat adam dan hawa pertama kalai berbuat dosa hubungan antara manusia dengan Tuhan sudah putus. Sehingga manusia kalau mau ketemua ama papa disurga aja harus dengan susah payah. Bahkan pada saat malaikat Tuhan mengusir adam dan hawa dari taman eden itu merupakan awal dimana hubungan Tuhan dan manusia terpisah alias putus.
Tapi Allah berpikir lain. Allah tidak tinggal diam untuk tidak mencintai ciptaannya yang diciptakannya serupa denga gambarnya. Alla mengutus anaknya tunggal kedalam dunia ini, supaya bisa menutup segala kesalahan manusia yang diperbuat.
Saat yesus mati dikayu salib, semua dosa yang diperbuat manusia telah lunas dibayarnya. Sehingga manusia tidak perlua lagi bersusah payah dengan berbagai cara untuk mencari keselamatan. Tetapi dalam hal ini manusia tinggal percaya saja, maka akan diselamtakan. Berarti perbuatan baik apapun yang kita buat dibumi tidak akan membawah kita kepada keselamatan. Karena keselamatan hanyalah anugerah pemberian yang diberika secara Cuma-Cuma alias gratis, tinggal bagaimana manusia mau memnggunakan pemberiaan itu dengan sebaik-baiknya.
Bukan hanya itu saja, tapi masih banyak hal baru yang dibukakan dalam membentuk pola piker kami kepada kedewasaan dalam sisi kerohaniaan. Bahkan teringat juga saat kakak mengatakan kalau saja bapak tidak mengutus anaknya kedalam dunia ini, berarti kita manusia hidup didunia secara sia-sia. Tetapi mengakhiri pembicaraannya kak ini mengatakan secara tugas kita manusia adalah bagaimana cara kita menghargai dan menjaga pemberiaan yang tidak dia berikan untuk kita. Percaya saja, maka otomatis semua yang diperintahkan akan kamu lakukan, karena Allah telah bekerja didalam hati kita.
Wah…mengerti deh sekarang. Makasih yang kak, kami sangat paham dengan apa yang kak katakana. Tidak terasa 90 menit telah kami lewati dengan suasana yang bersahabat seperti ini. Bagi kami pertemua seperti ini, adalah pertemuan yang membuat kami semakin dewasa. Bukan dewasa dalam kerohaniaan saja, tetapi dalam segala hal.
Semoga waktu seperti ini kami bisa dapatkan kembali lagi, wah teman-teman tunggu kami direnungan edisi sabtu depan yah?? Akan saya beberkan juga di blog ini.
It's a mystery to me why the religious right is so conservative? I believe in Jesus Christ and I have studied his teachings and deeds. From a national policy standpoint What Would Jesus Do? I'm not suggesting that we promote ourselves as a 'Christian Nation' but if you are a Christian wouldn't you want your country to demonstrate Christian values. What are Christian values? That's getting be be a real scary term for me. People are beginning to associate Christian values with anti-gay movement, anti stem cell research, right to life, censorship, abstenance only programs. Interpreting the New Testament on these issues will have to wait for another time but let's look at the basics. It's easy to see some clear national goals within the miracles and deeds of Christ. Jesus clearly demonstrated a desire for healing. Most of his miracles were healing the sick. Conservatives will say will can't provide universal health care because it cost stoo much. At the same time they are quite willing to spend many times more money on war. For the cost of the Iraq war we could have had universal health care many times over. Conservatives have choosen, as a national policy, not to relieve pain and suffering but cause pain and suffering instead. Jesus also chose to feed the hungry. From a conservative, national policy standpoint that's known as an 'entitlement program' or a government hand-out. I don't have a solution for the problem of people that chose to be be hungry and needy but we can not let people starve for fear that someone will take advantage of the program. These are only 2 examples of miracles Jesus performed and how I think they relate to national policy. There's also the water-to wine miracle. I'm not sure what that national policy coorelation would be. And, after the stock market tanked this week maybe I'll look at how Jesus felt about the finance industry of his day. Time and again I look at a national policy debate and it is obvious that Jesus stands with the liberal Democrats. I beleive that if we were to actually act like a Christian nation we would not need a military and the world would admire us.
In America, Sarah Palin is welcome to hold any belief she wishes, personally.
However, for others, she is not welcome to promote lies about her own record (or McCain's - or Obama's!), or a policy that would take away women's rights to choose what they do with there own bodies (a zygot is not a "baby"), or the idea that Israel is punished by terrorism because they do not believe in Jesus, or the idea that the Iraq War is "God's war." Palin is not welcome to be the President of the United States in waiting.
That she did not even know what the "Bush Doctrine" (anticipatory "defense") is in her very 1st televised interview with Charlie Gibson, or that, after her - very first trip - to another Continent, she believes she has enough foriegn policy gravitas to help lead this country - because she has administered the Alaska National Guard (for 18 months) and that "you can see Russia from Alaska" - is an embarrassment and an insult to everyone's intelligence throughout the world.
McCain/McSame's "judgement" is obviously skewed and controlled by his lobbyist managers (http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/stateupdates/gG5Z5k). In his most important initial demonstration of leadership in his campaign for the Presidency, McSame chooses - Sarah Palin???
Regardless of his past battle wounds and bravery, John McCain has currently demonstrated that America cannot - cannot - trust him to stand alone and rule this country with the courage and conviction he wants the nation to believe he still has. His present actions grossly betray his own patriotic history. John McCain should be ashamed that he has lowered himself to allowing his lobbyist staff to convince him to use lies, and to nominate a terribly inadequate running mate, just to win an election.
We cannot afford to have our country kidnapped any longer by the modern-day Republican fear mongering war baiters. (Lincoln was a Republican, but he is rolling in his grave at the actions of the new version of his old party.) Electing a McCain/Palin ticket is simply the worst thing America could do to itself.
It is time for real Change for the better, and the Obama/Biden ticket is the best chance for this to happen.
