The brain is plastic and you can literally "upgrade" your brain.
One of the things that may have contributed to or enhanced Einstein's intelligence was his exposure to many new ideas and concepts while he worked in a patent office.
You can improve or train your logical thinking, creativity, strategic and analysis thinking, problem and puzzle solving skills, pattern recognition and detection, power of deduction, categorizing and comparing skills.
The more information and knowledge you have, the more ideas and possibilities you can think of. Learning to learn is very important and not every one learns in the same way. Some styles are better than others for different people. For example some people need to see the whole picture in order to start absorbing the information properly while others need more of a step by step approach. It's important that you work on your learning skills and identify what works best for you quickly in order to make it as efficient, easy, and enjoyable as possible.

...This outdated paradigm has set off a vast multitude of “bigger picture” chains of events that have been corroding our productivity, ingenuity, and our economy. This, naturally, is not separate from the less tangibles such as happiness [individual and collective] and the motivation to want to do well and be good, for - as we’re witnessing in today’s [now global] economic crisis - everything is connected...

...I have yet to see a single politician muster the courage to do the right thing and to 'tell the "TRUTH" like it is' - they've chosen to silently side with the 'spin' and let the status-quo be - either they're afraid of consequences to their political careers, or they're simply corrupt, or they're just plain stupid - or all of the above (and beyond) - whatever the reason, while I'm not shocked or surprised at the behavior of the puppet morons in politics, I'm disgusted at their complete lack of integrity and conscience...and to not have a SINGLE one of them telling the 'real' story behind this attack on humanity is just ticking me off...

Communications is the new frontier. Newspapers are being converted from print to internet. Huge amounts of money are wasted through lack of standardization, redundancy, and difficulty in querying and finding data. We need to standardize not just electronic medical records, to prevent duplicating services and errors, but also utility bills, credit card bills, contracts, court records, prison and jail records, and any communications which are fundamental, frequent, and subject to privacy and security concerns.
Elderly and disabled persons often have difficulty in the area of communications. Changing the format of utility bills causes a problem. Difficult to read credit card bills causes chaos. Incomprehensible contracts are a disaster.
National security is highly dependent on communications - on the battle front, for homeland security, to prevent terrorist attacks, to prevent crime. However the privacy concerns are huge. Intelligence may sometimes compromise privacy. How do we balance these?
Information technology is poorly understood by most Americans. We need increased education in this area.
Mediation, debate, giving and following instructions, about almost anything are necessary skills in society. How can we increase our skills as a nation in this area?
Please give your conerns about what needs to do and why centralizing these concerns in one cabinet level position may be efficient and move us forward quicker or the opposite view.

OK I can't keep my mouth shut any longer... I will start with the most recent thoughts first.
This morning Ms. Palin said the following: "Tonight we will see the difference between a politician who puts his faith in government and a leader who puts his faith in you (the people)." People cheered when she said that. If I am not mistaken it is Barack who puts his faith in people. It is Barack who has said, right from the beginning, "I'm asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington...I'm asking to believe in yours." I think that we should all talk about how Ms. Palin is supporting Barack...after all isn't that a natural conclusion from the above?
Many people today commented, on the 'inciting' language of Ms. Palin in her recent appearances. What I would like to understand is why, if she didn't denounce it, the Secret Service didn't step in and remove the person making the threats.
OK, and now let me go back to my reactions to the VP debate last week. Overall what is one of the fundamental differences between the us and them is that we assume the best about people and I do not believe that they do. We operate consistent with the belief that people are intelligent and caring beings. Is there a way for us to share these beliefs openly with their base and those that are undecided in a way that it makes a difference? Do people care that others believe them to be less intelligent? My suspicion and experience is that people perform to your level of expectation. When you raise your expectations - like for a student - and talk to them from that place people respond in the most positive of ways. Perhaps all we need to do is speak to their hearts and the minds and treat them with the respect and dignity and intelligence that the McCain/Palin campaign is not?
As president, I believe that Obama would seek the advice of our nation's most outstanding economists. He will not turn to cronies for this critical advice. He is a brilliant man who will be able to evaluate the merits of the best possible plans and arrive at the most effective possible strategies.
I trust this self made man. I trust his judgement and I trust his thoughtful intelligence.

... and changing from Independent to Democrat
McCain is trying hard to scrape Bush off his shoe.
I've thought of a way to make that impossible. A way to make sure everyone smells what McCain's been stepping in the last 8 years.
It's a new slogan to use before and after speeches, on bumper stickers, at gatherings, and on podiums and television backdrops.
It may unite and energize an audience, and it's a strong clear message for public speaking. It's sheer simplicity will make it an effective message and fund raiser.
It looks like this:
UV_XY
NO MORE W's
It is the strongest possible rallying cry for loyal Democrats and undecided Independents. It says in a simple way get rid of the "W" (Bush and his follow-ons).
(1) Everyone recognizes the oval office monkey by his nickname "dubyah" or "W".
(2) Every Republican ran out to buy "W" bumper stickers.
(3) Every loyal Democrat might use the "UV_XY" sign and slogan. People would see it on bumper
stickers on every highway and every parking lot in America, on front lawns, and tee-shirts.
(4) From now on, energize people with the simple chant "U-V-X-Y" and "NO MORE W's".
It is memorable and to the point, like Mr. Obama himself.
As a slogan it exposes the Republicans' biggest weakness: that link between Bush and McCain. They are doing everything they can to break that link before November, but this tactic will forge it into an unbreakable chain.
Republicans didn't even want "W" at the convention. The hurricane was just a flimsy excuse for his absence.
Mr. Bush ... the man who stayed to watch the Olympics when war broke out between Russia and Georgia ... the man who kept reading a nursery book to school kids after he heard the twin towers were destroyed ... the man who did nothing about Katrina for days ... the man who vacationed at his ranch every time the world went to heck ... that same Bush pretended a hurricane was keeping him busy.
Don't allow the Republican and Bush track record to slip into the background!
Every television backdrop should be showing "UV_XY" and NO MORE W's. Every speech should start with the "UVXY" chant and high spirits. Every car driven by every Democrat should proclaim the days of George Bush and his kind are over .
"U-V-X-Y" and "NO MORE W's" would also refocus the campaign on McCain and away from that awful woman Palin. It would reinforce in every listener's mind, Independent or Democrat or other, that McCain is just another Bush.
And one more thing. In the 2000 election Bush was relentless claiming he'll be a better President than John MCCain. With Bush's record, what does that say about McCain?
----------
There's been a lot of talk about change in this Presidential race. Some of it real, and some of it just talk.
I do admit the Republican party has made some very real changes.
For instance, after the Democratic party brought a woman so close to the White House, the Republican party finally brought one into the picture.
After the Democratic party demanded we consider other options in Iraq, the Republican party also began talks about ending the war ... a war which has lasted nearly 2 years longer than World War II.
After the Democratic party talked about curbing the abusive profit-taking of big oil, the Republican party did eventually admit something needed to be done.
And after the Democratic party talked for years about the need for major changes in the way the White House does business, the Republican party dropped its long held mantra "stay the course" and began calling itself "the party of change."
Oh they've made changes all right. The trouble I see is that they only do it when they're backed into a corner. When the majority of Americans are suffering and an election is coming.
And you can't really talk about majorities without talking about minorities.
Remember we are all Americans. We are not part rich and part poor, part black and part white, part Hispanic and part Asian. We are the people , every last one of us. Your government shouldn't pick and choose who gets all the benefits, who gets immediate attention after a hurricane and who doesn't, who gets laws passed for their personal benefit and who does not.
But the Republican party doesn't seem to see it that way. In this great democratic process of electing the next President, the Democratic convention floor was a cross-section of all Americans ... the Republican convention was a different story.
The Democratic party has long held the doors open to minorities, to Hispanics and the young and women and African-Americans and others ... in short to all Americans ... but the Republican party is slow to accept these differences.
This year a quarter (24%) of the Democratic delegates were African-American. On the Republican side, the number was less than 2%.
At the Democratic convention, almost half (44%) of delegates were the minorities of this country. Twelve percent (12%) of them were Hispanic ... at the Republican convention that number was a mere 5%.
It seems to me that if the Republican party is reluctant to lead the country towards real equality and opportunity for everyone, the Democratic party is more than willing!
The Republican convention this year did have more women delegates than in the past, and one woman even made it onto the ticket. But the Republicans had only a handful of African-American delegates, of handicapped, Hispanic or Asian, or young people ...
... and certainly no one they think of as undesirable ... or who dares to challenge the party line.
Republican gatherings have frequently been preceded by the signing of loyalty oaths ... and party loyalty, not competence, has been the chief requirement for Republican appointees to government positions.
For women in the Republican party things look pretty good right now ... not so good for others. But I suppose if you're only going to talk about change you don't need to go into it with your heart and soul.
I guess what I'm saying is that when you talk about leading the way ... making America a fair and free land for all Americans ... you have to actually do it ... to show it ... you have to mean it .
I often wonder what must be going through the minds of voters.
When John McCain's economic advisor called us a nation of whiners, did voters think perhaps the Republican controlled White House, Congress, and Supreme Court have given them plenty to whine about?
And what must the more open-minded voters think of the Republican way of viewing the world today?
A frequent Republican goal seems to be amassing personal wealth. They rub the shoulders of big oil and wall street firms and major banks. John McCain even had a billionaire speak for him at the convention. The speaker mentioned how hard it is to get by in America today, with the high price of gas and food and everyday necessities.
By the way, that speaker really opened my eyes. I can now say in all honesty that I'm no longer surprised the Republican candidate doesn't know how many houses he owns ... or the difference between millionaires and the struggling middle class. People of enormous wealth, though they may be very good people, live in a different world from the rest of us.
... We didn't have a billionaire guest speaker at our convention because, quite frankly, they understand the problems of the average American. They are much more familiar with Republican support of big business.
Another conservative political mantra is a free market economy. The Republican party still seems to believe the more money you put into the hands of the wealthy, the better off everyone will be. It's that trickle down theory they've chanted since the days of Ronald Reagan.
Yet when John McCain's economic advisor, Mr. Graham, threw away many of the restrictions on profit-motivated banks earlier this year, the economy took a nose dive and millions of investors were hurt.
This is not to say that all major U.S. companies are interested only in the bottom line, but it does seem like most of them are.
And when you tell a company CEO and stockholders they can make all the money they want, by whatever means, and no one will be watching ... there are those who just might take advantage of the ordinary American.
Like big oil. Their profits under President Bush have been record-setting.
There's one report that Exxon made over $35 billion profit last year, while claiming they only raised prices to cover increased costs. On profits alone big oil could practically pay for the Iraq war, without putting the burden on us taxpayers.
It's no secret this administration and John McCain and Ms. Palin are all for letting big oil drill anywhere it wants and make whatever profit it can. But will unrestricted drilling reduce the price of filling up at the pump?
Let's examine the Republican "trickle down" theory in actual practice.
The price of crude oil has dropped over a third since it's record high, but at the pump the price has dropped more like an eighth. You can be certain that between 33% and 12% is a huge profit that went into someone's back pocket, and it wasn't mine. Nor was it the average American's.
And when the Republicans' chief economists and political figures loosened other government oversight, turned their heads away from the mortgage lenders, it was a clear signal to market predators they had the government's blessing to chase down every last crumb of mortgage profit. They lured millions of American families into buying more house than they could afford.
Mortgage lenders also pressed hard to convert Americans across the country into refinancing existing homes with Adjustable Rate Mortgages (ARMs). Americans were told this would be their ticket to bigger and better things, not to worry about the rates going up. But the rates did go up ... driving many of those same families into foreclosure.
Homelessness plays no part in the American dream as I understand it.
Surely some innocent Republicans are suffering along with the rest of America in the housing crisis. But the die-hards never seem to accept reality. They never seem to see the light of day.
The die-hard Republicans ... and I'm not talking about the typical Republican party member ... whose only concern is the good of the country ...
... but the die-hard Republicans like the Karl Roves and Henry Paulsons ... the John McCains and Sarah Palins ... they forge ahead continuing to support the same policies, the same political tactics, and the same administration. In the face of overwhelming evidence that things are not going as hoped, they stay the course .
Perhaps they're sticking to their guns in the mere hope their economic strategies will do better in the future ...
... though I've heard many Republicans claim Mr. Obama’s message of hope is merely a hollow promise. He has been attacked by die-hard Republicans for carrying his message of hope and the belief in a better tomorrow.
Let us not forget the Republican White House and Congress have been telling us the Middle-East, Iraq, the economy, and our standing and security in the world will all improve … all without a sliver of evidence. It sounds to me like they are saying “hope” only means something when they say it does.
Still it seems to me that hope has its place. Just not where the die-hards are looking.
Die-hard Republicans are hoping the job market will improve, even when their government does little to help ...
They're still hoping the price of oil will come down, when the government is backing the oil industry over the consumer ...
Hoping big corporations will trickle their profits down to the average American, when history tells us otherwise ...
Hoping the war will end, that our sons and daughters won't be dragged into that war, though the government refuses to consider the options ...
Hoping the world will be a safer place, when we go after the wrong targets ...
Hoping our civil rights will remain secure, when the very government meant to protect those rights is taking people to prison without trial, spying on our e-mails and phone calls without warrants ...
They're hoping college will be affordable, and opportunity will come knocking, when the government is spending less and less on college education ...
They're hoping people will get help when disaster strikes, though Katrina victims waited days for the Republican President to even acknowledge their plight ...
Most of all they're hoping the world will end up a better place for our children, despite the fact they keep putting the same kind of people and the same kind of policies back into power ...
It seems to me that's where the false hope lies.
.
I believe in hope, but of a different kind.
I believe in hope ... when it's backed by honest commitment, and it's not just a last-minute political label.
I believe in hope ... when I can see a political party that includes all Americans in that message.
I believe in hope ... when people say they're ready for change.
We cannot go on as before. We cannot survive as a nation if we continue to exclude everyone except the rich and powerful and closed-minded. We must change for the good of all.
This country does not belong to just a few of us ...
... to just 1.5% of the African-Americans ...
... to just 5% of the Hispanics ...
... to just those who support war ...
... or just those who support big business ...
... or just those who support Republican policies ...
This country is our land, rich and poor, black and white, Asian, Hispanic and everything in-between.
It's time to take the "W" out of the White House. It's time to give this country back to its people.
Say it with me. U-V-X-Y. No more W's.
Obama: "Nuclear."Palin: "Nukular."W: "Nukular."
Need I say more?
No, but I will.
I want a President and a Vice President that are smarter than I am. Call me silly but I believe that to solve problems, you need to be able to think. McCain - 5th worst in a class of almost 900. Palin - 5 or 6 colleges before graduating from a midwestern college. Obama - cum laude at Harvard, editor of Harvard Law Review, and professor of Constitutional Law.
We've had 8 years of stupid and stubborn.
ENOUGH.
I'm mad as hell and I can't take it anymore!
The Republicans has got to be kidding, right? After eight years of a man who cannot pronounce "nuclear" and an invisible VP, they offer us McCain and Palin as a viable option? As a poster at the MSN site said yesterday, "I'd rather have four more years of the last 8 before I vote for them!" Amen!
If you take some time to review the information on this site, you too will realize that Barack Obama and Joe Biden offer us the only chance to return the United States of America to its former place on the world stage: as a leader on critical issues and technology development, a conscience on moral issues, and a force when asked to be a force, not when we choose to be one.
Intelligence. Dignity. Vision. Three things we have never been more in need of! Three things in ample supply in the ticket of Obama/Biden!
Make this November the gateway to a future that all Americans can be proud of!
Dr. J
I have voted in every presidential election since 1974 and I'm very excited to support Barack Obama for president. He is intelligent, thoughtful and poised. He made the choice to study constitutional law so it is clear to me that he is deeply motivated to understand what our Founding Fathers intended for our country. Beyond his area of educational expertise of our constitution, he is very well traveled internationally. Ours is a diverse country and he understands diversity. He has a culturally diverse lineage and he is well traveled throughout the globe. Everything Obama has done from his choice of education to his experience working in the legislature has been driven by his passion for national politics.
He is diverse from his 'ivy league' education down to the 'grass roots' community work he chose to do. Isn't there something from Christian scripture that says “Inasmuch as you have done it for the least of My brothers, you have done it unto Me?” Not that I want to link church with state but I find it quite ironic that the Republican right wing is fighting to create a union of church and state yet cannot exemplify the teachings of scripture. I digress...
I want the leader of my nation to be intelligent. I want the leader of my country to be thoughtful. Reactive approaches to international and national crisis will not bode us well. There is no need to 'march off to war' at the first suspect of offense. I have watched Obama as he considers carefully each question and each response in his interviews. Maybe that doesn’t fit sound-bite America but it suits me just fine! The ‘dumbing down of America’ has gone too far. Education has not been a priority and it should be. That is high in my ranking of issues but above education I put healthcare.
I have worked in health care for over 30 years. I abandoned the conventional medical profession to become a personal trainer. Maybe that is another reason why I relate to Obama. If you take the time (and the risk) to get into the ‘trenches’ you understand better the needs of the weakest link. Making weak links stronger is essential for longevity both in individual biological health and in national health. We have to start with the issues we are weakest in and repair them.
We have to change our approach. Nothing changes that remains the same. If we do not change, we will not heal and we will not thrive. Right now our country is in survival mode with ‘cancers, autoimmune disease, bone disease, metabolic disorders.’ It may be that we are already too damaged to repair. Maybe a change in administrative policies now will be too little to late. I hope not. I hold on to the hope that we do change.
I now work in a cutting edge medical clinic which uses exercise, relaxation and nutrition as the first approach to heal the diseased body. We have a saying, "The body wants to heal." I will expand that to say, "The nation wants to heal." The Republican Party continues to follow a divisive and exclusive approach. Their approach is not a thinking approach, it is a reactive approach. This approach is effective in provoking non-thinking citizens.
The American Constitution was created by our Founding Fathers in a period of time that was much different than now. America and Americans have changed. We are more reactive, we are less thoughtful, and we live by the sound-bite. There was no way to foresee these changes. If America does not vote for change, we are destined for stagnation and weakness. Without a focus on the issues of education, health, economy, international policy, energy resources, and the intentions of our Founding Fathers we will fail from the inside-out. Enough of the reactive responses to sound-bites, lets get down to the business of healing and recovery!
We all remember how Bush and Cheney presumed to know The Truth about Saddam Hussein and Iraq, and then leaned on the CIA when its reports failed to support their assumptions. Cheney was so hostile to the CIA from the start that he arranged with Donald Rumsfeld to set up the Office for Special Plans, whose purpose was to funnel raw intelligence tidbits to the White House behind the back of the CIA. (This despite the fact that intelligence procedures have long held that raw intelligence should never be released because determining the value, relevance, validity and implications of a given bit of intel requires adherence to rigorous methodology unknown to those--such as politicians and the general public--who are not trained in that methodology.) And we all know what kind of methodology the White House used: "First the sentence, then the evidence." Needless to say, we all know how well that went. And then they turned around and blamed the CIA when things didn't go according to plan (if 'plan' is the word to use).
According to Laura Rozen, an expert in intelligence and foreign policy, CIA veterans are very worried that a President McCain will bring back the same disastrous approach to the CIA and intelligence in general that Bush and Cheney engaged in. She's comparing Obama and McCain on intelligence in a two-part article, the first of which, focused on McCain, is here.
It may be difficult to imagine how an Obama administration might wish to expand the scope of intelligence collection and analysis. But that is exactly what is needed.
Why? The world has changed. The international community has changed. The challenges have changed. Intelligence also must change.
The Environment. If it can be said that the world's environment now and in the coming years will have a strong effect on the U.S., then our national leadership must have credible intelligence in this area. Does the Environmental Protection Agency have an intelligence directorate? If not, then where in our government is someone monitoring global environmental matters?
A counter-argument to this is to emphasize that the world's scientific community produces already a robust amount of information on the environment; so policy-makers need only study this information to surmise what to do.
Here, the problem is that scientific information is not intelligence, although it can be an essential input into intelligence analysis.
In sum, our intelligence community needs to be extended to include global environmental matters. This would involve collecting scientific information, but also other information about individuals, organizations, foreign governments, or others that are influencing the global environment. The focus should be around any actions outside of the U.S. that might harm our national interests, however broadly defined. This information collection would include use of all the methods of intelligence collection, including the clandestine services.
Also it would involve adapting the traditional (and powerful) intelligence analytical techniques to this new field.
There also are other areas where intelligence needs to be beefed up:
Strategic Food Analysis. Does the Department of Agriculture have an intelligence department? We need to examine how well food intelligence is integrated into the traditional intelligence apparatus that revolves around international security. With recent food riots around the world, it is clear that food or the lack thereof can be a force for instability.
Consequently, it should be studied by the intelligence community. The same rules as for environmental intelligence would apply: the powerful and traditional intelligence analysis tools developed in the past can be applied to the global food balance.
Much more than typical food production data needs to be collected. Instead, studies need to be made of global suppliers, any criminal practices in global markets, the use by some countries of food as a weapon of coercion, and the effects on the geo-strategic balance of power.
These are only two examples of how the scope of national intelligence needs to change. We need more intelligence not less. We need more coverage, not less. And the intelligence community must come to recognize that the severe burden it carries must be piled on even further in order to assist in meeting the long-term global challenges of the United States.

Well, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Ron Suskind’s new book “The Way of the World” asserts that President Bush ordered the CIA to fabricate a letter that linked al Qaeda to Iraq. Suskind even has former intelligence officials on the record backing this up.
Former CIA Director George Tenant issued the following statement in reaction: "There was no such order from the White House to me nor, to the best of my knowledge, was anyone from CIA ever involved in any such effort."
Notice the language he’s using “TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE.”
That’s a caveat. It’s not a categorical denial and it leaves Tenant an out. It's like saying "I don't know anything but I don't think that happened."
White House spokesman Tony Fratto's response was similar: "The notion that the White House directed anyone to forge a letter from [former Iraqi intelligence chief Tahir Jalil] Habbush to Saddam Hussein is absurd."
This is NOT a denial. It’s a standard White House language game. When confronted with an accusation they say “oh that’s crazy” or “the accuser is attacking us” or some similar non-denial.
Here’s Keith Olberman’s interview with Suskind:
