Brand history
The company ” ASP “was founded in 1995 and in 1998 under “on aura tout vu” as a brand /a French expression in translation : You think you v’seen it all / and made its name at first by creating and producing exclusive fashion accessories, embroideries, buttons and garments for the famous Haute Couture Brands before starting its own collections of ready-to-wear, accessories and couture clothes.
When I read about this on the huffingtonpost style page, I shook my head in utter amazement. I couldn't believe it. Yes, the founder of the Black Artists Association, Amnau Eele, slammed Michelle Obama for not picking an African-American fashion designer for her inauguration dress. Here is what she said:"It's fine and good if you want to be all 'Kumbaya' and 'We Are the World' by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers do something too?"I believe her criticism is completely undeserved. It really is.Not because Michelle Obama is above criticism (no one is) but because the First Lady will have 4 full years (hopefully 8 years) to showcase the artistry and radiance of African-American designers. Think of all the State Dinners at the White House. Think of all of the Democratic Party fundraisers. Think of all the international travel to continent after continent. You get my point? She’s going to have 365 chances each year to wear the digs of African-American designers in high-profile settings – and brag about to the press.I do believe there was an missed opportunity here. Ms. Amnau Eele, who leveled the criticism at Mrs. Obama, could have leveraged her position with the Black Artists Association to be a contact for The First Lady. You know, someone who could consult The First Lady about clothes and styles from both established and up-and-coming designers alike. Michelle Obama has a full staff, and a strong communications team in her office. So why not e-mail her? Why not fax her? Why not send her a nice card congratulating her on her beautiful dress, and letting her know that you’d like to recommend some designers for her next big event?I just don’t get it.Also, let me say this too: I really didn’t like the “be all 'Kumbaya' and 'We Are the World' by representing all different countries” part in Ms. Eele’s criticism either. This is a multicultural country. Latinos, Asian-Americans, Native-Americans, Arab-Americans, and young whites also voted in earth shattering numbers for President Obama. Not just because of him, but also because of his lovely, enterprising wife – a woman of incredible charisma and unimpeachable intellect, and, a woman who walks amongst dignitaries and heads of state without losing that COMMON TOUCH. She resonates with the nameless, faceless, voiceless millions who yearn for an empowered life outside of the shadows and margins of society. Indeed, her agenda (children, education, and military families) is animated by the hopes of the millions who follow and support her - including millions of black designers.Knocking The First Lady for choosing an Asian American designer and a Latino designer is very, very unfair. I don't believe for one second that the Obamas are going to leave African-American designers out in the cold. No one can convince me of that. I mean, of course Michelle Obama is going to wear dresses from black designers (she wears them throughout the year).Michelle Obama is going to continue to reach out to different racial and ethnic groups for designers with great styles. She has to. Her position as First Lady of The United States mandates that she speaks to both the color-specific differences that make us unique (because they exists and are real) as well as the color-neutral commonalities that bring us together. The current composition of this country demands it.But, I can't help wondering how things would have been if Ms. Eele said this instead: “I will continue to celebrate Michelle Obama’s wonderful, awe-inspiring style, and, through my group, and others, consistently suggest ways she can maintain that style through the creative visions of designers, representing the total richness of America’s racial and ethinic diversity. I want to help her in that process.”Why didn’t she say that instead?

In 1955, when racism was still a big issue in the United States of America, Ella Fitzgerald became the first African-American to perform at the Mocambo, after Marilyn Monroe had lobbied the owner for the booking. The booking was instrumental in Fitzgerald's career. Marilyn would promise the owner that she would appear every night (and be on time), and this way also fill the house--and she did, she was there every night, and she filled the house and: she was always on time! Their close friendship lasted for many years and Ella would sing Marilyn Monroe's famous 'My Heart Belongs To Daddy' in honor of her wonderful friend Marilyn Monroe, who died almost 34 years before she passed on in 1996, at age 79. Ok, I know this is lame of me, but I saw this article http://blogs.iht.com/tribtalk/business/green/?p=190#comments , and I was so proud of the comment I wrote that I wanted to re-post it to show off:
1000 years ago, guys could get away with just wearing a short little tunic in the summer. Then Europe went in the Little Ice Age, and upper-class people- who lived drafty stone castles- got in the habit of dressing more warmly, which is when the basic idea of men’s attire- shirt, vest, jacket, trousers- originated. When Europeans started colonizing the rest of the world, they were loathe to give up civilized clothing for a more comfortable loincloth or caftan, but did compromise by switching to summer versions in light colors and breathable fabrics.
Then air-conditioning was invented, and men could be comfy wearing 3-piece wool business suits year-round. A generation later, and people justify cranking up the air because they need to wear “traditional” business attire, as if their great-great-grandpa would have dressed like that if the summers in his day were as hot as they are now. Traditions are fine, if they make sense. It does not make sense to waste energy by changing your surroundings so you can comfortably wear clothing that was originally developed as an adaptation to a cool climate. It’s like turning on the office sprinklers because your ancestors carried umbrellas with them because they lived in buildings with leaky roofs.
How much money could be saved if all US government buildings turned down climate control year round?
(And yes, I am a massive geek with a costuming background, although I managed to resist diverting into stories about how the tin hats used to visit us a lot on hot days because the costume shop was one of the few places at the Renaissance Festival with air-conditioning.)
The Budget Fashionista sourced a wallet-friendly alternative to Michelle Obama's totally gorgeous purple Maria Pinto frock. You know the one -- the one she wore when Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination last week.
The look is missing shoes, though I suspect one's best black pumps should suffice. Just make sure you moisturize those legs, as this look is a no-stocking affair.

Dedicated Followers of Fashion
This diary is about Honesty. But it is also about Fashion. For these are two aspects of the campaign in NH that struck me after leaving the Granite State and in preparing for the upcoming Nevada caucus (which is probably the most problematic contest in the long primary season and subject of my next post, but you can always check Las Vegas Diary: High Stakes Game in Nevada Desert to get the idea).
Although the Democratic presidential contest has not been entirely dominated by fashion and style, it has had an impact on the race.
Some early examples include:
-- the cost of John Edwards haircuts (at odds with his new populist image),
-- Hillary Clinton's cleavage in Senate committee meetings (evidence of persistent sexism), and
-- Barack Obama's tie-less look (run alongside photos of similarly-attired Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while Howard Wolfson declaimed Obama's readiness to talk to Holocaust deniers).
Of course, these details distract us from the more painful issues consistently dominating canvassing New Hampshire voters. Like how to get out of Iraq, where our soldiers are being blown up, while al Qaeda regroups in Pakistan. Or health care. Or education, taxes, loss-of-jobs and the environment. But fashion is what you are likely to get from a media and in a culture obsessed with the antics of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. So don't hold it against Barack Obama for allowing himself to grace the cover of the September GQ, when becoming known by the public was his number one challenge.
Well, we're coming down to the wire, folks...this is where the rubber meets the road. Are we excited? Nervous? Confident? Scared? Hopeful? Faithful? Count me as all of the above!
Since most agree that polls at this point are notoriously unreliable, it seems to come down to organization on the ground. By all accounts, we have a slight edge in that department. I truly believe we also have the edge in momentum and enthusiasm...but only time will tell.
The points I think we all need to stress in these final days when communicating with potential supporters are as follows:
1. JUDGMENT ~ even if you count all the "experience" other candidates claim for themselves, it doesn't mean a hill of beans without sound judgment. If you've been in D.C. for almost 20 years, but you still voted for the war in Iraq and to give Bush a blank check with regard to Iran, what good is your "experience?" We need NEW vision and intelligent decision-making!
2. ELECTABILITY ~ when nearly 50% of the American population say they will NEVER vote for you, you have a serious problem trying to win a national election. Fair or not, having another Clinton on the ticket will divide our country - perhaps even our party - and lead to another VERY close election - if not a loss. Democrats can NOT squander this opportunity to take back the White House and our country. We NEED a fresh face FREE of baggage and scandals...EVERY recent poll shows that Obama has the BEST CHANCE TO BEAT EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN running for President.
*Not to mention, that Clinton at the top of the ticket will BRING DOWN many Congressional candidates in key "purple" states and hurt our chances of maintaining control of the House & Senate.
3. UNITY ~ Barack Obama is the ONLY candidate who has the potential to bring our country back together and actually GET THINGS ACCOMPLISHED for the American people and SOLVE the important problems we face. Obama has the support of countless Independents and Republicans and a history of working together with both sides to solve problems without compromising his ideals. It doesn't matter which 10-point plan you have for healthcare or anything else if everyone is going to fight AGAINST you and you can't get it passed!
4. RESTORE OUR INTERNATIONAL IMAGE ~ The rest of the world will IMMEDIATELY look at America differently when Obama is sworn in as our next President...not just because of the color of his skin, but because of his heritage and background. He has lived in other countries, has RELATIVES who were muslim, and has an innate understanding of and empathy toward others in virtually every corner of the world. If you want the world to look up to America again, and for us to be a beacon of HOPE again, Obama is THE ONE!
5. ETHICS & VALUES ~ If you want to know how someone is going to govern the country, look to how they have run their campaign. Obama has consistently been the most POSITIVE candidate in either party, and has run the most ethical and CLEAN campaign. He has not had to rely on the politics of slice & burn or had to resort to the Rove-style campaigning by personal destruction. He doesn't have "surrogates" out there attacking and slandering other candidates while claiming he has nothing to do with it, and he doesn't have any 527's headed by former supporters running ads for him. He doesn't say he'll fight lobbyists and special interests and then say there's nothing he can do to stop "independent" groups from running negative ads against others...HE IS NOT A HYPOCRITE!
If none of this is convincing enough, and the person you are speaking with is especially shallow, simply remind them that Michelle Obama is a MUCH BETTER DRESSER THAN HILLARY! LOL...well, it's kind of important, isn't it???
So, fasten your seatbelts - here we go!!! We are about to change the world!!!

I jsut re-signed up for Camp Obama. I was so busy recently with my job recently coupled with a film project, that I neglected to return a call from Camp Obama for the New York City camp.
Dang it!
All is not lost, however. I asked my wife could I go to Chicago at the end of September for Camp Obama, and she said "why not?" Gotta love that lady!
Now all I have to do is pass the pre-interview and get a plane ticket and a hotel for a couple of nights. Piece of cake.
I am a little concerned that I might miss this training session. I will call back the person from the NYC Camp Obama and see if they can talk to me about the Chicago September CO.
I will HOPE for the best,
In Peace,
Jim Lyons
BTW - who read the GQ article on Senator Obama?
http://men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_5841
Obama looked pretty sharp on the cover - I might start wearing suits again.....umm maybe not, I don't think a suit will help me.
B-)
For years I avoided them... those funny fat and twirly bulbs that gave off a different color light.
