During the horrors of Bush’s reign I slowly began to come to the dreadful realization that before long the world might actually find itself in the midst of a third World War, something that had seemed unthinkable for many decades. But the new millennia seemed to hold far more frightening scenarios than ever before imagined and the outcome of all these fears would rest in the hands of the future President of the United States.
For so long it felt like disaster was inevitable, as the hope of all civilized nations, the country that held so much promise, had begun to act so erratically, irresponsibly and impulsively. This was cause for great concern, since the world needed a unifying force more than ever before. The challenges we all faced could not be solved alone and the United States of America was the only potential candidate to unite an unruly world. But President Bush, supported, at least in the beginning, by large numbers of his people, made it clear that the US thought nothing of the rest of the world or the wisdom that had evolved within it.
Then suddenly there was a young Senator from Illinois with the strange name of Barack Obama. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since then.
When Obama won in Iowa, it was like the fog finally lifted after so many years of impenetrable darkness. There was hope and possibilities again, a chance at least for peace and prosperity. But going through my own blog posts, as they depict this incredible journey, I can’t help but marvel at the challenges he faced and obstacles he overcame. All of it converging on this day, in this moment in time, when I can finally write the words I have so longed to write; President Obama. It’s enough to take your breath away. But despite the fact that my belief in the possibility of this moment and my faith in this man has never wavered, I have to admit most days it did seem like an impossible dream.
Yet here we are. Today impossible has been proven null and void for all to see. Faith has finally prevailed over despair, commitment and dedication has prevailed over the age old prejudice of money and breeding, and the ethereal experience of hope became an actual beacon in the darkness.
Today millions all over the world enjoy the sensation of victory, the sweat aroma of joyous celebration. It is truly remarkable how many of us became personally invested in this campaign and shared in the struggles and woes of our fellow humans. Never before has the election in nation become such a shared endeavor for so many, so far apart!
Even though I’m unable to be a part of the celebrations in Washington DC today, I will be there in heart and spirit, for this day feels like it belongs as much to me as it does to the American people and others across the globe. It’s more than just the swearing in of yet another President. It’s the pinnacle of a collective journey, where accepted truths were tested and faith challenged, with victory the final outcome. It has been a journey so much greater than one man or one voice.
Barack Obama became the focus point of a world full of hope, dreams and fears and he carried it all without faltering or wavering. I have never been more proud of a single individual before, and elated that he has not yet allowed my belief in him to be in vain.
As countless Americans proudly, and rightly so, declare themselves winners, not just of an election, but rather winners of the battle against the hopelessness and crippling fear that has held the nation in its grip for so long, we should all remember the fragility of this victory. The celebration is well deserved and should be a moment worthy of the history books. But tomorrow the true test and challenge begins.

I wanted to print this t-shirt four years ago. Well, not exactly this one, because the design I had ready then used Kerry's campaign font instead of Obama's, but you get the idea. I have to say my happiness has been a bit muted today by the passage of Prop 8 and the fact that voters in at least two states seem to be happy to re-elect criminals to represent them, but we still made a huge step forward and out of the darkness last night. I was at the Mark Warner victory party, and I have to tell you that I saw a couple thousand people from every imaginable walk of life who were sharing an amazing moment with each other.
I am so happy to have a president who is intelligent and thoughtful. I am so happy that my state of Virginia has made so much progress in the past few years.
Today our future looks so much brighter than it did yesterday. I may wear this shirt every day until the inauguration.
Also, a small bit of trivia I discovered while looking up the font Obama used for his campain. It turns out that it's the same typeface used on the cornerstone at the Ground Zero construction site. I wonder if the campaign were aware of this?
There is a song that keeps going through my mind whenever I see the images of Tuesday Night in Chicago. It was composed by the German Rockband "The Scorpions" to honour the occasion of their being the first Western band to play in Moscow after the fall of the Berlin Wall. I would like to share this song with you.

Yes. The new name for the Grant Park celebration is sweeping the Nation! Or something like that. I personally like ObamaCon the best, but my friend that invented the term likes DemoCon better.
SOOO I probably didn't get tickets. And I'm seriously bummed.
I had a huge plan with my other die-hard democratic friend and my mom to go downtown and see history made... Does Chicago even have a place where 1mil. people can meet peacefully? I'm assuming that this kind of thing should have taken weeks/months of planning... But if we want the Olympics, we're going to have to get used to this kind of thing.
My e-mail remains silent. Except for the "Election Night wait list entry received" notice.
But I'm still not looking forward to breaking the news to my friend, and getting stuck at home. I might work at the local voting place... but then I can't watch CNN as the results come in! Decisions, decisions...
Did I mention how much of a political junkie I am? Caucus season was like summer vacation for me. I loved tracking poll results every other week or so. I even figured out how CNN's magic touch-screen worked. Really!
Sigh. Still bummed, though.

Right now, Fox News is trying to paint Barack Obama as foreign, un-American, suspicious, and scary. They're trying to send Americans the message that our country's first viable Black candidate for President is not "one of us."
I've joined on to ColorOfChange.org's campaign to push back on Fox, publicly demanding they stop their race-baiting and fear mongering. If that doesn't work, then the next step is their advertisers and the FCC. I wanted to invite you to sign on as well. It takes only a moment:

Here are some recent deplorable instances:
After Senator Obama won the nomination, he and his wife gave each other a "pound" in front of the cameras. Fox anchor E.D. Hill called the act of celebration a "terrorist fist jab." Then last week, a Fox News on-screen graphic referred to Michelle Obama as "Obama's baby mama"--slang used to describe the unmarried mother of a man's child. It was a clear attempt to associate the Obamas with negative cultural stereotypes about Black people, an insult not only to Michelle Obama but to women and Black people everywhere.
After each of the incidents mentioned, Fox issued some form of weak apology. But what does it mean when you slap someone in the face, apologize the next day, then slap them again on the third? It means the apology is meaningless.
These aren't one-time incidents--they're part of a pattern that continues no matter how often Fox is forced to apologize. Fox has a clear record of attacking and undermining Black institutions, Black leaders, and Black people in general.
If we don't push back now, we will see more of the same from now until November. Please join me in helping to bring an end to Fox's behavior.
