"Sen. Joe Lieberman will keep his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee despite hard feelings over his support for GOP nominee John McCain during the presidential campaign. The Connecticut independent will lose a minor panel post as punishment for criticizing Obama this fall.
Lieberman's colleagues in the Democratic caucus voted 42-13 Tuesday on a resolution condemning statements made by Lieberman during the campaign but allowing him to keep the Homeland Security Committee gavel. He loses an Environment and Public Works panel subcommittee chairmanship, however."
(Actually, he gave up his position on the Environmental and Public Works Committee altogether. However, Lieberman is also on the Armed Services Committee, where he chairs an important subcommittee.)
The article concludes with a statement made Friday by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who opposed the move.
"To reward Senator Lieberman with a major committee chairmanship would be a slap in the face of millions of Americans who worked tirelessly for Barack Obama and who want to see real change in our country. Appointing someone to a major post who led the opposition to everything we are fighting for is not 'change we can believe in."'
I discussed Lieberman's situation in my new blog, Keep Joe Lieberman, which has now achieved its purpose. By their actions, the Senate Democrats have shown that there’s hope for them yet!It is also important to note that Lieberman caucused with the Democrats as an Independent Democrat, so he was not obliged by this to support Obama, just as Bernie Sanders could have supported
I'm glad that Obama seeks to govern rather than to seek revenge. Too bad there are so many "Democrazies" out there who aren't getting the message.

The full Democratic Caucus is set to vote on Joe Lieberman's Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee next week. Write to your Senators, or call them, today!
Here's what I sent to WA Senators Murray and Cantwell today:
Dear Senator Murray: First, thank you for visiting our Canvassing Kickoff with Howard Dean and Governor Gregoire on the Saturday before the Election!
I am writing, as a constituent from West Seattle, to beg you on bended knee to vote to remove Senator Joe Lieberman (Joe Lieberman for Joe Lieberman party, CT) from his chairmanship of the Homeland Security committee when the Democratic Caucus convenes next week to vote on this issue. While I'm sure you're receiving plenty of emails, letters, and phone calls from constituents urging Sen. Lieberman's ouster from his committee Chair assignment for more partisan reasons (and his broken promise that he would support Senator McCain's candidacy, but refrain from attacking Senator Obama, is certainly a breach of faith with the Party, the Caucus, and his own word), there's something just as important to consider, if not more so:
Joe Lieberman has been incredibly ineffectual in his role as chair of the Homeland Security committee - particularly when it comes to the role he, and the committee, were supposed to play in standing up to the shameful actions of the Bush White House during these past years. Unlike its much more effective and active counterpart in the House, the Committee, under Joe Lieberman, failed to challenge the Bush Administration on its failures and offenses on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the "war on terror", torture, Hurricane Katrina, and a host of other issues the Committee was charged to oversee and investigate. It could be argued that Joe Lieberman's inaction as head of the Committee enabled and shielded a whole laundry list of failures of the Bush Administration, resulting in countless wasted tax dollars - and lives.
But there's ample reason to be suspicious, given his past behavior patterns, that an embarrassed, embittered Joe Lieberman may abuse his Chairmanship to "go after" the Obama Administration in a way he abjectly failed to do under the Bush Administration.
While Joe Lieberman's personal and political conduct during the Presidential election of 2008 (and his campaigning in support of other Republican candidates to the House and Senate in the recent past) are shameful enough, it's his dereliction of duty, lack of leadership, and failure to fulfill his role as chair of his Committee that should be the primary rationale for stripping him of his Committee assignment.
Let Joe Lieberman continue to caucus with the Democrats if he so chooses. Offer him Chairmanship of a different Committee - something that Mr. "Agreed with us on everything but the War" can be trusted with. But he's been an embarrassingly ineffective Chair of the Homeland Security Committee, and has failed at his duties in that role.
It's time to give someone else a chance to do a better job. If I dared to exhibit such lackluster performance and failure at my job, I would have been fired a long time ago.
Please vote to strip Joe Lieberman of his Committee Chair assignment.

Democrazies
Here is the petition you are urged to sign at http://liebermanmustgo.com/
"We CANNOT tolerate a leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus who supports George Bush and McCain's War in Iraq. We CANNOT tolerate a Democratic chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee who endorses and stumps for McCain. We call on the Senate Democratic Steering Committee to strip Joe Lieberman of his chairmanship and his leadership role."
This is preceded by the statement:
"Demand the Steering Committee remove Joe Lieberman's position within the Democratic Caucus in 2009."
These people are so busy foaming at the mouth that they can't even write plain English. Do they want Lieberman removed from the Caucus entirely or just as chairman of Homeland Security. What is his "leadership role", other than his chairmanship." He is not on the Steering Committee, according to them.
As for the petition itself, it is laughable. These people are clearly living in the past. The election campaign is over. Obama is President-Elect. He says he will be president of all the people, which includes Lieberman and McCain. The latter even referred to him as “My president” in his concession speech.
So this group who “cannot tolerate…” is indeed intolerant. And hypocritical as well. They refer to “George Bush and McCain’s War.” Let’s see. Those voting for it included Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and John Edwards, among others. (But not my Senator, Carl Levin, to his everlasting credit.)
This group also wants to disenfranchise the people of Connecticut, who re-elected Lieberman (running as an "Independent Democrat") in 2006. They seem indifferent to the following facts.
Original post at South by Southwest (3/5/08)
At around 7:00 PM our two "precinct conventions" (Texas primary "caucuses" to most readers) were gathering where we had voted earlier in the day. There were probably about 200 of us standing in the dimly lit and chilly parking lot and spilling over onto front lawn of the church. Men and women, old and very young, Black and Hispanic and Anglo -- people were visibly excited to be there, though a bit cold and fairly confused about what to do next.
We were among the lucky precincts, however. A middle aged man, who had somehow gotten the necessary manila envelope of instructions and forms, volunteered to get us started. He had been through it before, he said. The man got up into the bed of a pickup and called for nominations for leader and secretary of what I now call the "evening festivities." A man behind me was nominated, a woman volunteered to record, the nominee agreed to serve and they were elected by unanimous and enthusiastic voice vote. We then became stalwarts in waiting mode until the last people in line had voted so the polls could close and the primary vote count (what will amount to 65% of the final total) could start.

Barack Obama has won the democratic nomination. Yes, we can. Yes, We Did! As one of millions of Americans, a liver transplant nurse coordinator and her adult son, a computer programmer, through volunteering, can now share in the success. Read the blog about volunteering on Texas primary election day and see the pictures of Barack Obama's visits to San Antonio.
I've only just set up my MyBO blog, but this post I wrote elsewhere on cacus day in Seattle seemed appropriate for this site. Now that we've got the nomination, I'm proud to have been a part of the long primary process that got us there.

Today I attended my first ever caucus. The numbers:My precinct: 110 voters came (estimate 1/3 of total voters for precinct)Obama: 78 votes, 4 delegatesClinton: 31 votes, 2 delegatesUndecided: 12 hoursImpressions:We were at a school, and about 10 precincts gathered there. It was very crowded, and a little chaotic. I heard probably double from the last caucus. I wish I had brought my camera! Sadly, no pics from me.One of the guys in my precinct challenged the delegate assignment math. He was well heeled, young, wife and child, obviously successful and used to taking leadership.Delegates turned out to be actual people from the precinct. We asked who wanted to be a delegate, who wanted to be an alternate, and had the right number volunteer. These folks get to go on to the county convention? and cast the votes for the candidate. It was cool to see neighbors I'd never seen before, all crammed into a small room with small chairs, making democracy happen.

In our pursuit of protection of the minority from the tyranny of the majority , we have wrestled with the inequities of the Electoral College ( negating a majority popular vote ) , the two seats / state in the Senate that can sometimes frustrate popular will, and the delegate fiasco we are currently experiencing ( which honestly should not be happening -- the Democratic Party should be mortified over this development ).
The simplest thing that occurs to me might actually circumvent a lot of these problems while preserving minority protections as they are expressed in the voting habits of the populace.
Why not institute a party statute , and eventually a constitutional amendment that awards delegate selections and electoral college votes not on the basis of total population, but rather on the basis of VOTING population in the previous major election years?
It would preserve the notion of popular VOTE being dominant, while also giving a measure of anti-bully protection to the smaller states ( and delegations ). In essence, you could bulk up as much as you wished.
Imagine the levels of voter participation we would finally begin to experience in this country. There would be incentive to vote for all factions. It would TRULY make their vote meaningful, even if their candidate lost. Are we ever embarrassed that the supposed bastion of democracy in this world exhibits the lowest voter turnout of all ?
It wouldn't hurt to make voting a 2-day, weekend holiday process as well ( as in many European countries ). God knows we could do without another questionable national holiday in favor of a voting one.
It is my hope that those responsible for this site and information dissemination in the campaign would respectfully forward these ideas directly to Barack Obama for immediate consideration.

Well, the Congressional District Caucuses were held on Saturday. I had filed my declaration of nomination to run for National Delegate. However, I volunteered to be the Campaign Manager for Jonathan Fant who is running for State House of Representatives, Postion 2 for the 18th Legislative District. This is going to keep me very busy over the summer. I had planned on dropping my name from the list, until we got an invitation to a 'strategy' meeting.
The Old Guard in the party wanted to meet to pre-arrange who they wanted to go as a Delegate. This would be based on who's turn it was to get the reward. The person would be the one that had served long and hard for the party, and hadn't gone yet. Then, the horse-trading with the other counties would begin. If they voted for your person, you would vote for theirs.
They were upset the Obama delegates wouldn't play ball. We agreed among ourselves that it didn't matter what county the delegate came from, or how long they had been working for the party. It was choosing the right person that was important.
As the Clinton delegates left after a separate meeting, they sneered at us. Saying 'Well, you won't get anybody from Clark county elected.' We replied we didn't care.
And it turns out they were wrong. Even though it seemed one county had organized around a single person, Moe Spencer from the 49th LD in Clark county was elected as the single male delegate. The other person was elected alternate. He was an inspiring speaker, and if he didn't work so hard for an advocacy group, I would talk him into running for office.
I think we did elect the right people, and am proud we didn't do it they way it's always been done.
It's interesting to me that I suddenly become so involved. As I think about it, my parents were never active in politics. This had a couple of reasons. My father was enlisted in the navy for 27 yrs. He and my mother felt awkward about getting involved, as it seemed to them it was not their place. Also, for most of my dad's career, we weren't in one place long enough. By the time we did have an opportunity to live somewhere longer than 3 yrs, they were set in their ways.
I new the importance of voting. But as time went one, I came to the realization that voting was not enough. I credit Sen. Obama with tipping the balance. His message of change resonated with me. I wanted to do more, and his campaign made it easier. And the fact that the Democratic party in Washington was going to ignore the results of the primary in favor of the caucuses, I went to the causus for the first time, as did a large number of people. The turnout was 3 times bigger than in the last Presidential primary. I learned about Delegates. I stepped forward to take charge of the delegate elections for my precinct, as I have a voice that carries and no one else stepped forward. In the county convention, I was honored to be elected to be a delegate to the Congressional District Caucus and State Convention. I am campaigning to go on to the National Convention in Denver.
I will teach my children by example to be involved. It is the only way we can take back control from the special interests.
Obama is still the man. A win is a win!!!!
Indiana, you're up tomorrow. Let's take it to the polls by storm!!! Every vote counts. Let your voices be heard.
Moveon .org did an article concerning the false information that's fed to the public! News people should report the news..not propaganda!

Guys get busy, get on the phones, send out emails, get donations and support Mr. Obama! Stop this craziness.
As Senator Clinton is now claiming to have the lead in the popular vote (including Florida and even Michigan), it's surprising that Senator Obama is not trying to shift the conversation to the Caucuses that didn't release popular vote counts.
