Black folks seem to have their own barometer in gauging right from wrong in the realm of politics, and this particularly holds true when the subject is one of their own. Across communities and even within families, African descendants now here in America always seem to hold our own to higher standards, even when those standards may not be humanly possible.

Barack Obama has rejuvenated a hope in Black America that has not been uttered nor felt since the days of legendary Civil Rights martyr Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. That distinction carries heightened meaning nowadays as poverty has taken a front seat in the homes of most minority citizens, Black men continue to make up an unprecedented number of the incarcerated and affordable healthcare becomes more of a faded reality.

Thus, as he runs for the coveted Oval Office, Obama must be careful not to offend his core-Black supporters, many of whom are already far beyond being simply disenchanted. And, thus, the tightrope act, fairly or Not begins, as he attempts to appease this base,while simultaneously advocating a national agenda for all citizens. You see, the Democratic incumbent is running for commander-in-chief of all America, and not just Blacks. This puts Obama in a precarious position. And, how he will face this tremendous balancing act before him is something only he and his closest aides know at this point.

For instance, Obama was heckled during a recent campaign speech in St. Petersburg, Florida, when a group of Black men held up a banner that read “What about the Black community, Obama?” After finally being handed a mic during the question-and-answer period that followed, an unidentified protester asked: “Why is it that you have not had the ability to not one time speak to the interests and even speak on behalf of the oppressed and exploited African-American community or Black community in this country?”

And, even in the neighborhoods of NYC, African Americans express some concern that Obama is not addressing the needs of the darker class. “I know he’s [Obama] running for president…but he’s got to remember us, he can’t forget about us,” said a middle-aged Black man, who claimed he was a pastor, riding the A train Uptown recently.

Even Deloris, a 41-year-old home-health aide, expressed fear. “I’m going to vote for Barack Obama, but I don’t really know if anything will change. I don’t know…” Deloris said.

Perhaps no other leader in history has had to face such a delicate set of circumstances. Barack has to bring the two Americas together without offending or dismissing either. So far, he seems to have the honesty and integrity to face this issue head on. And for that, we can all agree THE MAN’S GOT COURAGE.

You don't know what you've missed!

Last Saturday, three proud Gwinnettians met at I-85N and Jimmy Carter to show our pride and hold up the Gwinnettians for Obama banner for all to see! We were met by almost unanimous thumbs-up signs and the melodious sounds of horns honking and happy, excited passers-by!

Don't miss this opportunity! It only takes a couple of hours of your time (or less)! We need your bodies!! So I hope to meet all of you this coming Saturday when we meet at I-85N and Hwy #316 in Duluth! We're starting at noon and we'll be there for about 3 hours. Even if you can only come for 45 minutes, I guearantee it's worth it! You won't be sorry! So get out your Obama t-shirts and meet us there!

I heard I should be keeping a blog of the goings-on up here in Gwinnett! We've been busy little bees! Let me tell ya...

It all started (for me) with the Emory event where Obama came and gave a rousing speech. I didn't expect that many people to turn out, but they did! And they did in droves!

I attended a few events with the Atlanta groups at Centennial Park and such, but I didn't make a huge effort to meet people or make any lasting bonds there. I should have...

How to Make a 6'x2' Rally Banner for Your Group

Many people have been asking in the various email groups where they can get a large banner sign for their Obama group. Others have mentioned that they have spent several hundred dollars on one. One of our Sacramento for Obama group members is a very clever person. (He's also an engineer and figured out how to do this without a lot of trial and error.) Want proof? Here's a photo of the banner he made for our group.

Want to know how he did it so you can make one for your own group? I told Vaughn about everyone being curious about such banners and suggested he write up the instructions and put it on his blog. He did! You will find it here on Vaughn's blog.

Now you can save yourselves a lot of money and get a well-made, beautifully customized banner for your group. Here's a bit of a cost comparison on a ready-made sign versus the materials costs for a self-made one by someone with an excellent graphics program, an ink-jet printer, a large work surface and a hot iron. Vaughn even has a few pdf files of the graphics for you to use. All you'll need to do is substitute the lettering for your own group.

Pre-made Banners at some campaign stuff type store that don't mention your group's name = $150 (you still have to provide the poles and rope!)

T-shirt Transfer paper, 24 sheets of 8.5x11" for ink jet printer = $25-$30

cotton broadcloth or canvas fabric at in white or navy, 48" wide, $6.99 a yard = $14.00 for 6'x4.5' banner fabric

Grommets, 25' nylon rope, 2 closet rod poles with 2 eye hooks each = $50
