I immediately went to Michael Moore's site to see his view regarding the bankruptcy of General Motors. Predictibly, he was a bit smug. He had seen this day coming twenty years ago, so he deserves it. However, he has some good ideas on the future of manufacturing in Detroit.
Michael Moore on GM demise
As we all know Medicare and S.S. are in jeopardy of disappearing. As one who works in health care seniors are a very important part of our society. Their financial contrilbutions (saving and consuming) got us out the a financial mess back when they were not considered seniors. Lets take care of them financially while helping ourselves selflessly.
Though I am not an expert on alternative energy I do have an idea. Why not build "sun" cities (senior housing communities) with alternative energy as the sole source of energy. They should be massive retirement communities with massive alt. energy farms (solar (FL,CA,NV), wind). If anyone knows how to conserve it would be our seniors.
Here's where the money comes in. As we know most seniors conserve and money can be made buy selling the energy conserved at these communities back into grid.
Any thoughts?
I like some of the details of the Barack Obama 10 year energy plan, but it is too long for us. We need to implement some changes right now. If we don't, this world will not be here too long. This is not a game. We have destroyed the arctic wildlife to the point where the polar bears are becoming extinct. Now to some it would be easier to just ignore it and say that it won't affect us. But don't you understand that one species affects the other? If one dies off, it affects others. If we let the earth die, we die with it. It is not up to us to determine how we are to affect life on this planet. It is up to the man above. How are we to become stewards of the land if we don't care.
We think we have 30 years before the melting of the arctic affects the human race. But how do we know that? Don't you know that the speed at which ice melts increases with time? This means that the arctic is melting at an exponential rate. We must plan to live in a different climate. Some land that is dry will become non-existant.
Louis Black has said in his comedy routine that a $300 refund check is not a stimulus to the national economy. President Bush said that the refund check was to offset family losses to the housing market. That means that for the thousands of dollars of equity you have lost on your home, the $300 will certainly give you a warm fuzzy inside. In the Washington Post they called this "Intaxification", the warm drunk feeling that you get from receiving the check, while forgetting that it was your money to begin with. Louis Black continued that if we really wanted to stimulate the economy we should take that money, invest it in a public works project and build a really big "thing" in a region, and then people will want to visit it, take pictures of it, get the T-Shirt and ball cap and so forth.
I am not suggesting that we build another Mt. Rushmore with the faces of President Obama and Vice President Biden. However, I do believe a public works project is the right way to go here to solve some of our economic problems.
I am not for Socialism - I believe in a free market economy - and this is what I keep telling myself. This said, the present state of the economy is faced with disaster, and now the government is cheating on the no Socialism rule to socialize the debt of the Financial Industry, without socializing the profits, as this industry continues to advance forward and think like well to do capitalists sponsoring expensive retreats.
Time for a Change.
I propose that our government create, operate and socialize alternative fuel and biodiesel facilities throughout the nation's breadbasket. Think about it. The last time our country met with a national crisis, we invented the Department of Homeland Security! Creating facilities under the Department of Energy should not pose a problem, and in the end, our country will pay billions for a hard assets that really stimulate the economy through a new market. It will not be like paying for a bunch of worthless paper as seen in the financial industry. Willie Nelson is doing this right now on a very small scale at his truck stop in Texas, and he did so simply by building it. If the government were to give farmers a new market, a place to take their fuel crops - whammo.. an economic stimulus that can trickle down within the states... not overseas. This will create jobs, and reduce unemployment. This will place the US in the Energy business, and no environmentalist in the country would oppose this.
We can hold our breaths for the Oil companies to do this, and in the mean time the Oil fields will dry up to the point that we all pay $10 per gallon. Or our government can create this infrastructure, stop paying farming subsidies, turn American farmers into "Oil Shieks", begin to pull back our foreign oil imports, and export our surplus.
In Detroit, we must insist (as we are socializing their debt as well) that they must begin building efficient biodiesel, and alternative fuel vehicles. Major cities, as some already do, should provide incentives for Alternative fue vehicles by HOV access. Virginia (where I live) should add biodiesel. Yes I drive a biodiesel capable car, not that I can get biodiesel. It gets 43 MPG! China is staging to infiltrate our automotive market with their cars. We have seen what they do to "milk"... I am not sure that I want to drive what they are selling.
Energy Profits
So the big question is... where do we profit and who gets them. First off, there is no reason why the fuels from these facilities cannot be sold for a profit even when the operation is owned by the government. Presently, prices at the pump are down because the economy is down and people are looking at gas concious vehicles vs. SUV's. Remember, it was only this past summer that we were paying $3.50 for gas. What happened? The consumer market as a whole said enough and became anti-SUV. Hummer sales faultered. Now we are paying $1.56 a gallon. It's cheaper than milk. (From now on the cat drinks unleaded.) The oil companies are hoping we can afford to go through another round of buying SUV's, then prices will rise again.
I propose that we fix the problems presently facing us with the profits - Social Security, Health Care, etc. I propose that we invest the money into many, many Small Businesses that are representative of the middle class. The present economic situation can be described by, "The Upper Class of corporate America screwed over the Middle Class until they could no long afford their products and services, and then it came back to bite them to the point that it is up to all taxpayers to bail them out." We do not prosper without a strong middle class and the enforced regulatory policies that help protect it.
Buy Back
Let's consider a period of time - say, the amount of time it takes to get past the baby boomer Social Security problem. At that time, let's consider that these hard assets have paid for themselves, thereby repaying the taxpayer, and the time has come to practice capitalism in a free market again. I suggest that we let the farmers (who by that time should have developed substantial profits) buy this industry back from the government. If the farmers are unable to buy back the whole thing - which is doubtful, the remainder goes to the market. So now you have many green energy companies, you are practicing free market capitalism again, the environment is improving, the country is exporting fuel and energy expertise overseas in addition to alternative energy cars. That is a stimulus.
How much does it cost?
That is a very good question. Ask Willie Nelson. Multiply it by the desired scale of the operation across the country. Could it be worse than the $800 Billion to the finance industry? No. This will actually make money. The real stimulus benefits would far exceed the cost.
When Solar Parity is reached - when the price for a British Thermal Unit or a Watt is the same regardless of whether it came from coal, oil, gas, solar, wind, geo-thermal or hydro electric is the crucial moment in time for all alternative energy development.
As long as geo-carbon energy sources are less expensive, alternative energy development will be stifled. If we do not force alternative energy development ahead through government action, when we truly need to have the alternatives in place to take the place of geo-carbon sources, it will be too late. It is likely that fifteen years of robust development and deployment will be needed, before alternatives will be able to shoulder a substantial portion (half or more) of the energy demand in the United States.
In as much as, the supply of oil is unlikely to last more than 40 years and that the price of oil will climb back up to $140 per barrel again and higher within a few short years, it is clear that now is the time to push forward.
To both spur development and to fund development of solar energy, the U.S. government needs to place a tax on all geo-carbon energy sources. Beginning with 2009, a tax of $.25 should be placed on each 100,000 Btu's of geo-carbon energy. Every year after, the tax should be raised an additional $.25 per 100,000 Btu's until the cost of energy from geo-carbon sources reaches parity with energy produced from the capture of solar energy.
It takes time for the economy to adjust to the increases in the costs of fundamental resources. Increases should be spread over a reasonable period of time. These small, yearly price increases will allow the overall economy to adjust without absorbing all the disposable income in the economy.
The money received as tax on geo-carbon should all be used to fund alternative, (primarily solar energy), development. None of it should be mixed with the general tax revenues. And the money collected should be loaned, not given, to be paid back from the money earned or saved from the energy projects that the tax money funds.
In this way, the Federal Government can begin to develop alternative energy facilities, manufacturing, and systems without waiting for the price of energy to skyrocket again.
I have an idea for part of an economic stimulus package that can take a giant step towards alternative energy usage. Create a major tax incentive and 0% interest loans for individual home owners to convert their homes to solar or wind for electricity.
When we looked into converting our split-level home to solar, we found the price tag was going to be $18,000 to $20,000. This was well outside what we could afford without a loan, which would increase the price because of interest. It also would take us a decade to make that money back on savings from our utility bills; half the expected life time of such systems.
ADVANTAGES:
DISADVANTAGES:
There are a number of ways that the incentives could be done, but they should be major. Ideas that would make converting a home to alternative energy without direct costs to the consumer would be ideal. Such ideas could include a 100% tax credit rather than just a tax write-off, longterm 0% loans which are paid back at amounts similar to current utility bills, 100% tax write-offs that repeat for 2 or 3 years (at 100% each year), etc.
Additionally, there are a number of ways the incentives could be designed to focusing them towards the general population, though I would not want to exclude the wealthy as they likely use more electricity than the average home. Ideas could include initial limitations to a primary residency, an upper limit to how much incentive is provided for a single home (say $30,000), etc. There may also need to be limitations for when the owner sells the home, such as: full payback of 0% loan due at time of sale, multi-year tax write-offs stop if home is sold during that time, etc.
Is this a perfect idea? Of course not. But I firmly believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I believe that this can be done quickly, with relatively little up-front costs to the government. I believe that it can provide an almost immediate shot in the arm to the economy, and can make a huge leap towards the use of alternative energy; much faster than any type of major wind/solar/tide/geothermal/hydro projects could, or than changing our auto industry could. At the same time, it works fine while these, and other longer term, stimulus projects get off the ground.
Gas prices are low. So who cares about alternative energy. As long as we can put put gas in our cars for less than two bucks a gallon, who gives a damn about the environment or anything else?
Many have heard and felt that the above statement rings true for them. When you have only two dollars left in your savings account after bills are paid, who cares about what some tree hugging hippie has to say. Less money at the pump means more money in your pocket. That's real life when you have barely enough money to feed your family. That's real life when you own a small trucking company that will go bankrupt from rising fuel prices.
But we must learn to look beyond the here and now. I may sound like I am taking a jab at oil companies, but it must be said. When you depend on mainly one source of fuel, you are at the mercy of that one source. Our economy is heavily affected by what we and the transportation industry pays for fuel. Trucking can do all they can to keep the consumer from getting hit, but they can only do so much. It is the trucking company and owner operator that deliver the loads to the grocery and department stores. The trucking companies must eventually pass the cost to their customer which are your local grocery stores. Then the grocery and department stores pass the extra cost directly to the consumer. Wether gas is 10 cents or $10 a gallon, why take that chance?
Some analysts say oil will definitely go back up to $100 a barrel sometime next year. So you say, let's wait until it goes back up again, then maybe we'll know for sure that the governmnet will be so concerned that it will do something other than have a 10 year plan that will have little or no effect on the current situation.
Well who do I think I am? Do I think I can do a better job than the president of the United States? OK honey. Just pretend that my name is President Robin V. Williams. President Robin V. Williams will take a good chunk of those billions of dollars and invest it in companies that have already looked into alternative sources of energy and food production. Look at http://www.calcars.org, look at http://www.wheelabratortechnologies.com/ and look at http://www.solarcity.com . I will invest in programs that would offer paid training those who have lost there jobs in this economic mess and put those people to work in the type of companies that will make the future safer, our economy strong and our environment better. Billions of dollars will be invested in local transportation that has more frequent and efficient routes. Well, people hate to use mass transit, they say. Well, I don't mean to oversimplify this, but I believe more people will ride the bus if the bus came more than once an hour.
But there is a whole lot more out there than green cars and alternative energy for homes and businesses. Visit New Energy Earth's home page at http://www.newenergyearth.org for more information.
National Economic Recovery Proposal
N.E.R.P.
The NERP / initiative is a proposed measure to “immediately empower” the federal government through itself independently, or with the co-assistance of some related / departmental agencies to borrow (the government) roughly $225 trillion dollars for “strategically” reducing and or eliminating the current / domestic economic, social and financial crisis--in part, or its entirely.
Our initiative involves repaying these monies over a period within a 45 / year time frame; with or without interest, depending upon the lending source-(i.e., the federal government, financial institutions, etc.,); while using the federal GDP-(estimated between $13 to $14 trillion annually, if applicable) as a source / means of repayment.
The proposal calls for the dispersal of these monies over a 3 to 10 year period; throughout the greater-(national) public, private and governmental sectors and areas to include, but not limited to; national security, administrative, executive and judicial; environmental stability, natural / man made catastrophes and disasters; education, healthcare, social, economic development; capital improvements; economic and cultural conflicts; economic recovery, relief, reorganization, reparations, and discretionary / mandatory spending, etc..
NERP is expected to impact all three sector / groups-(public, private and governmental) on a national level; by targeting and disbursing funds to further promote, foster, support, sustain and promote economic, social and cultural stability throughout the country. Lessening the burdens greatly that the federal government is required to meet.
The challenges are great, the road is long, and the critics say that it will never work. These are the same statements before President Obama started his campaign for the White House. Her it is, December of 2008, and the same exact questions now face the entire populist.
We wanted a change in Washington and in politics. A reformer with a vision to lead us back onto the path of more traditional American Values. A leader that would not allow torture to be mentioned as a tactic of any branch of the US government. We wanted to end an unjust war with some dignity and focus on alternative energy programs.
After eight long years under an administration that has given us huge debt, wars, and not the brink of a depression, what is next?
I have a very clever plan to develop some technology that could radically change our country. It is “green” and would produce jobs. Our factory is manufacturing a unique blended hybrid recycled plastic. This will keep huge amounts of waste out of landfills and would be the raw material for new products.
An economist would say that the triple bottom line would be met or exceeded. I decided to let this be known to some people and everyone has been impressed. Last week, I received a booklet from the EPA. This manual came with a useful CD and many pages of questions. This style of implementing new technologies is outdated. The market is moving too fast. The standard P/L tables do not apply anymore. We will turn a profit, create jobs, pay taxes, and develop new equipment.
So, the booklet sits on my desk as I wonder how our family can afford Christmas this year, a very ill relative in the hospital that has depleted all of her assets, a daughter worried about her job, and cash running out.
I worry that such a great idea is in danger of never seeing the light of day because of the paperwork needed and the time required to do it. Yes we need a change, I am willing to help, but time is very short. Check us out at www.avcpallets.com what the heck, someone else with vision might understand the situation.

I am thrilled to see this personal blog feature on this site and being able to be a part of a society making a historical change in the next four years.
Not only will our country experience a historical President, but we will also see a historical Clean Energy movement.
In the past two days, I have read three news articles about governments around the country already taking measures for better home energy alternatives. From the town of Islip, Long Island which approved a code to allow residential wind turbines to Dominion Virginia Power now offering their customers the option to use clean energy, our nation is now on the cusp of a major 'green' movement which willl hava long lasting impact on our society.
Each day, I look forward to receiving news on this new alternative energy front.
My blog site, Energy-Efficient-Home-Improvement.com will continue to monitor the latest changes in the home energy efficiency market.
Thank you President elect Barrack Obama for providing us the people to be a part of our government and we as a nation will come together as never before seen in US history.
God bless America!
So I'm not Joe the Plumber, but like him I'm one of those self-employed and I drive a truck, one with a Hemi-engine, Detroit's thirsty brutes. I drive it prudently and have even gotten 23mpg on the highway with it (for the record: I'm not endorsing CHRYSLER). I sit here in the middle of the day, hoping that my next check for my next job comes in. It is the most dismal time and I brace myself for a rough year.
Like everyone else I delight in the lower prices for gas. I see it as a reprieve, an opportunity to reassess and get priorities straight. But I favor a higher tax on gas, not because I'm a masochist, but because we need to reshift our 'needs and wants'.
Several things in the energy policy went terribly wrong in this country.
We need to become energy independent, and I hope that the following can help stimulate a conversation on how, in practical terms, we can accomplish that. The latter 2 sections of what follows cover some of my thoughts on that. Certainly, if you have any ideas to add or subtract, I welcome them.

Re: Real National Security With The Development Of A National Energy Plan and A Method To Finance It With out Resort To Tax Revenues
'United Stated Energy Bonds' and 'United States Energy Stamps'
Immediate funding for the new national alternative energy infrastructure
Immediate funding for millions of jobs in the least possible time
Dear Sir:
Within every problem lies an opportunity. We can immediately take advantage of this truth and greatly benefit our country by addressing several problems simultaneously.
We need a large number of new jobs for the people of America, (millions of jobs ASAP).
We need to raise a trillion dollars a year in capital for the next ten or so years to build a new alternative energy base for our country.
We need to raise this enormous sum of money, to the greatest extent, without recourse to the financial industry, which is in turmoil and is likely to remain so for a long time, or to the country's general tax revenues, of which there are not nearly enough for all the other demands already being made upon them.
The government is fiscally stretched, with huge deficits and it will be difficult to fund programs that will put people to work, without fueling inflation.
An old idea, modernized: Liberty Bonds can solve all these problems.
United States Energy Backed Financial Instruments are an excellent alternative solution, that will generate enormous amounts of capital without upsetting other areas of the economy. There is a huge pool of money available within our country and around the world that could purchase these instruments. These instruments can be offered within a very short period of time, 60 to 90 days after you are sworn in.
Energy bonds will very quickly generate hundreds of billions of dollars, and eventually as the loans are repaid and the funds reloan, create a capital fund of several trillions of dollars.
United States Energy Backed Financial Instruments would be placed with the citizens of our country or citizens of the world. They would pay a modest interest and would be repaid from the money that is saved or earned from the energy projects both small and large, that are funded with the money raised through them.
The money raised with Energy Bonds should be legally segregated from the general funds raised through taxes and other revenue procedures of the Federal Government, allowing the energy fund to build to the tremendous level that will be required to redevelop our energy generation and energy use infrastructure. These funds should not be commingled in any way with other government funds. This money should be loaned or in rare instances, used for loan guarantees. The money would never be given or granted. With time, as this pool of money grows, enormous amounts of money will be available to help launch the many large alternative energy projects the business and industrial sectors of United States must build: (high mileage autos, solar thermal generators, solid state power panel manufacturing and other facilities to produce all the necessary equipment and systems)and also, to capitalize the very great amount of work, the people must do, (home energy improvements, water and air heating systems, heat pumps, distributed end use solar electric systems, et c.), to re-found our country on a new secure energy base.
Eventually, in ten or twenty or thirty years, when the new alternative energy infrastructure has come into existence, and when the enormous pool of funds is no longer required, the money might be turned over to the social security administration to help offset the enormous cost of social security and other entitlement programs. The U.S. is facing huge funding deficits for these social programs, daunting problems that have no apparent solution at this time. The future Energy Bond Fund, having served it's intended purpose, might also help solve these deficit problems at that time.
In conclusion and summary,
(1) that Energy Backed Securities would be unique revenue instruments that would only fund projects that could pay the interest and repay the principal using the money from the sale of the energy produced or saved by those projects.
(2) that the money raised with these instruments would be raised apart from Wall Street. In this way, the shortage of ready credit in the financial community will have little or no effect on the raising of money needed to finance a new alternative energy infrastructure.
(3) that these funds would be raised apart from and with out resort to, the general tax or other revenues of the U.S. government, which are already inadequate to meet other demands.
(4) that rebuilding and re-founding our energy generation and use infrastructure will generate millions of new jobs across the U.S. and in accomplishing these things, as many as fifty million jobs will be created and recreated during the next fifteen or so years. This undertaking will be the primary engine of growth for the economy of the United States for the foreseeable future.
(5) that financing that infrastructure with funds raised with Energy Bonds and similar energy backed instruments, will accomplish this more quickly than any other alternative.
(6) that the Economy will boom as all this money flows into the hands of our people.
(7) that the unique repayment situation with United States Energy Backed Securities will make them the most secure financial instruments on earth.
In these ways, many problems and many opportunities can combine to create many excellent solutions.
There are several other benefits to using Energy Backed Securities, but time and space are limited.
I hope you see value in these securities and are able to quickly implement their use.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
James Flaherty

I can't express how enthused I am about Barack's getting elected. This is the best I've felt about America in a long time. Our country is suffering in so many ways. The one that I think carries the greatest burden is the state of our environment. Our economy is a major issue, but once we get that resolved, we may be wondering if we'll have a stable enough of a planet to live on for much longer. Thankfully, President-Elect Barack Obama has a long term plan to help make us less dependant on foreign oil and more reliant on cleaner varieties of fuel.
Unfortunately, government is often unable to enact changes fast enough!
There is, however, something that we can all do to take immediate action and spread the word in an efficient manner. Please visit the site below for more information. We can all contribute to make a change, one person at a time!
There have been many misperceptions about Barack's stance on gun rights, straying from his spoken commitment to the Second Amendment.
Fortunately he has some well-known hunters and shooters on his side. Recently supporter and American Hunters and Shooters Association President (and former NFL player) Ray Schoenke campaigned for Barack in Gallipolis and the Jackson County Headquarters.
In a letter to the editor in the Mansfield News Journal, a hunter/supporter directly addresses the gun issue:
In my opinion Barack Obama is the wise choice for president.I am an avid firearms person and love to hunt. I have belonged to the National Rifle Association and other organizations and have voted Republican in the past on this issue alone. I really believe this has become a fear issue with the electorate and is being fostered by the Republican Party along with the NRA. Just remember that whenever a firearm controversy raises its ugly head, the membership roles of the NRA expand, so it is in their interests to foster these issues. It has taken the Europeans centuries to realize you have to keep religion and politics separate. This was one of the greatest tenets our founding fathers put in place for us. If you think the rest of the world is not paying attention to nor has a stake in the outcome of our election you better pay attention. Through modern times our presidents have cloaked themselves with the mantle of leader of the free world. If you don't believe they are paying attention, then why did 200,000 Europeans listen to one speech of Senator Obama's?This election is not about or for me; it is about my children and grandchildren. If we continue down this same path there will be absolutely no future for any of them.

On other issues important to rural Ohioans, Barack has proven himself to be light years ahead of his opposition, with strong support of the farm bill, advocacy for corn-based ethanol energy, and interest in investing in infrastructure and rural education. As this article recounts, Barack's friends from fellow corn state Illinois, including state Senator John Sullivan and former Illinois USDA executive Stephen Scates.
("Barns for Obama" like this one, written about in the Toledo Blade here, attest to Barack's visible support in rural areas).
Other issues like these, argues one Ironton man in the letter to the editor here, should also claim importance amongst Second Amendment voters:
If you are an avid hunter and target shooter like me, you should be relieved to know that neither presidential candidate wants to take away your right to enjoy your sport. Obama and McCain both support the Second Amendment, which gives each of us the right to bear arms. Obama and McCain both have voted against a number of restrictive gun provisions, including the right of the federal government to confiscate firearms during emergencies. What is interesting is that both candidates have also drawn the ire of the NRA for their support of criminal background checks for purchasers at large gun shows. However, there are other positions that the candidates have taken that may be important in helping sportsmen decide how to vote this November. McCain has voted against the Conservation Reserve Program and the Wetlands Reserve Program (Obama co-sponsored) that are strongly supported by Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. To my fellow Ohio Sportsmen, the good news is that both Obama and McCain will protect our right to enjoy our sport, so there is not much to choose between on this issue. On the other hand, there are a great number of very important non-sportsman issues, which will decide what kind of world, and country future generations will live in. There are big differences between the candidates, it just does not have to do with guns.

So many countries are awaiting the USA to help them have the means to care for their lives by providing the technology to do so.
Providing the knowledge and ability to sell goods internationally is such a step. Growing bamboo and hemp in these impoverished countries then promote those products in the Green Revolution to support income for those people doing the harvesting of these Earth Friendly products.

He will make improvements in the delivery of health care, including lower-cost health insurance for the currently uninsured. This will be a substantial effort, but it is not instituting socialism in our country. Historically, the government has cleaned up oil spills and provided other, more subtle support for the oil industry. No one called it socialism.
Obama's plans provide incentives for wind, solar, bio-fuel, and other alternative energy sources, as well as advance policies to encourage reduction in use of fossil fuels, such as stricter standards for gas mileage. These measures are in line with what our government has done in other areas. They will achieve multiple goals: provide jobs here in the USA; reduce dependence on foreign oil; reduce total consumption of oil, thus reducing income to several unfriendly, non-democratic countries; and reduce effects causing climate change.
Obama is for reasonable regulation of the financial industry. The Bush administration, with strong support from McCain and his advisors, has promoted deregulation, encouraging a financial bubble on top of a housing bubble, leading to the current disastrous collapse. As a result, it has become necessary to make the largest investment ever of government funds into private firms. This bailout certainly comes closer to socialism than the programs in health care and energy Obama proposes.
Obama is the one to trust to reform the system, protect the taxpayer, and revert back to the non-corporate socialism, American way.
It would seem logical that any rebuilding to be done in those areas affected by Katrina and all the hurricanes since to have those structures rebuilt requiring them to be 30% or more energy efficient in order to obtain a CO.
Additionally structures can now be built to withstand 300 mph winds or more including tidal surges.
Disasters cost taxpayers million and millions dollars yet we keep rebuilding the same old way expecting different results.
