Look GM is saddled with this huge pension plan and that seems to be weighing down these old venerable companies. If they go bankrupt, then the pensions go out the window. That is a lose-lose situation.
Suppose instead of pouring billions into propping up these companies we put that money to use beefing up social security instead. Then we could offer to take the pension plans off the hands of the companies in question and perhaps other ailing institutions, and tell the pensioners that instead of completely losing their pension they will be transitioned into a higher paying social security program.
Then the companies are off the hook for all that money they previously owed and the people still get some kind of a pension. That sounds more like a win-win situation to me! Obama, can you hear me?

President Barack Obama may be doing a good job of repairing the nation’s economy but behind the scenes his strongest political base is eroding due to major setbacks in corporate diversity. African Americans reached into their pocketbooks to make unprecedented contributions to Mr. Obama’s presidential campaign last year. However, if the current trend of cutting diversity efforts continues, African Americans will not have the resources to financially support the president’s bid for a second term. When there’s the no work, there’s no money.
Thousands of African American small businesses, automotive dealers and suppliers, minority –owned media outlets and their employees are feeling the brunt of the recession. Businesses cannot get loans, corporations are laying off employees at an alarming rate and domestic automakers, the second largest employer of African Americans outside of the federal government, don’t see diversity as a priority during this economic crisis.
Minority car dealers and minority automotive suppliers who had the funds to support President Obama’s first run for the presidency will almost disappear because of the current economic crisis. Automakers have been corporate leaders in diversity for at least a generation. But diversity is not being considered in the restructuring plans of the domestic automotive industry.
Automakers that championed diversity and encouraged their ad agencies to support it, but did not require those same agencies to practice it, are now dropping diversity advertising and marketing altogether or making significant cuts. Corporations are too concerned with their survival to focus on diversity advertising and marketing which should be an essential part of restructuring. However, it has been looked at as affirmative action instead of a need to reach more than 30 percent of American consumers.
Minority dealers and suppliers who represented a huge financial support base for President Obama during his presidential campaign cannot get financing to operate their businesses and they have lost the support of larger companies that cannot get credit themselves. Not only has progress on this front ceased but all these businesses are closing at an alarming rate.
Small minority businesses experienced huge growth; their owners who often used equity in their homes to finance their start-ups can no longer do so and SBA and VA backed financing is frozen. The banks simply will not loan, although the Obama Administration has pumped money into them to free up the secondary finance markets. Banks either don’t have the cash or they are using the federal money to generate interest payments and to repay the government to escape federal oversight. But small minority-owned businesses have been left out of this equation.
African American employees, who were making inroads into upper management positions when diversity was a corporate priority, are now the first to be cut during tough times. Their input was never really valued; even those who have proven track records of success.
One 30-year senior executive at General Motors told me that this is the worse time that she has ever seen for diversity. Progress in that area is quietly being set-back. President Obama needs to appoint a diversity czar to protect the interests of minority consumers.
Other black politicians as well as President Obama should also be worried because they all need financially healthy voters to support their political campaigns. The ultra conservatives have yet another trick up their sleeve to destroy the economic base of minority consumers. They have one goal in mind – force the domestic automakers into bankruptcy and destroy the unions and the middle class. The current trend is having a devastating impact on African American middle class workers and it would make it difficult for all African American office seekers and incumbents, not just the president, to get future financial support from the black community.

The constitution of the United States clearly separates politics from religion. Therefore, all religions need to stay out of Hawaii—and national—politics. I would never think to enforce the lifestyle I lead engendered by my beliefs on you or your family. Therefore, I find it offensive when any church—and these days, although many of my friends are Mormons, I’m specifically talking about the Mormons—tries to tell me how I have to live.
More after the jump…
So now President Obama has put Larry Summers and his proteges in charge of the auto industry bailout. Given their background and track record, we can be sure that their primary objective will be to "rescue" the shareholders and bondholders of the auto companies, not the employees, and certainly not the retirees.
It is common knowledge that the US auto industry is spending billions every year for health insurance for workers and retirees - insurance they were guaranteed by contract. The Wall Street/Summers solution to their problem will be to let them go into bankruptcy and cancel those contracts so that the investors are "free" from the burden of living up to their contractual obligations.
This problem could be solved another way - another way that would benefit all Americans and all American business and provide a huge stimulus to the economy: enact single-payer health care. If the United States, like all other Western democracies, had free health care for all, the auto companies might still be in the black. But we can count on Summers (under President Obama's direction we must assume) to screw the workers and retirees so that the investors can be "rescued".
The economic woes of the US auto industry are due primarily to their poor management. It was management that continued to build cars that people didn't want. It was management that stopped innovating and improving their automobiles in order to save money. It is management and the shareholders they represented who made the mistakes and it is they who should pay. They took risks, they mismanaged those risks, and they lost money. That's how the market is supposed to work. Instead, Obama and Summers will bail out those shareholders and bondholders and probably most of the executives at the expense of the workers. You can count on it.
Wake up, Mr. President! You said you would give us hope and real change, but you have employed the people who gave us the economy we need to change from and who have made a career of dashing the hopes of ordinary Americans. You need to change course immediately before they make things much worse.
WASHINGTON – With Congress gridlocked and the economy floundering, the Bush administration declared Friday it would step in to prevent the "precipitous collapse" of the U.S. auto industry and the disastrous loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs sure to follow.
A day after the sudden demise of rescue legislation in Congress, carmakers were talking with the administration and the Federal Reserve about how they could still get the billions of dollars they say they need to survive. The talks included conditions that automakers would have to meet, said GM spokesman Greg Martin.
The administration said no decisions had been made on the size or duration of the new bailout plan, or what type of concessions might be demanded from the struggling automakers, their workers, stockholders or others.
In a reversal, the most likely rescue option under consideration involved billions of dollars originally ticketed for the bailout of the financial industry. President George W. Bush had earlier declared that money off-limits to the beleaguered automakers.

[I see what is going on here...why the Republicans are stonewalling the auto bail out.
It is clear to me once the auto trade is bankrupt, it gives Republican shareholders the "green light" to ship the American auto industry overseas (where the new owners/ shareholders of these companies can reap all the rewards: cheap labor and selling cars at American price) or am i wrong? Maybe.
I am so sick and tired of special interest groups greed! Greed is the reason why our country is in recession. Greed is why our country comes second next to Russia (Russia pools their funds into technology and America is about me, myself and I individually speaking) Greed is why we have lost respect around the world. Greed is why the war on terror has become so popular (with shareholders)
It is time we stop the greed and replace it with spreading the wealth. I am not talking about taking money from business owners and just giving it away. #1 I am talking about placing a cap on shareholders assets; only allow no more then 20% per 5 companies, per one individual, or group. But most importantly, placing a cap on labor union wage. Wage is not "point of no return" it is limited.
How would the union feel, if employer demanded the union pay a certan amount before the employee can work. Rent out a booth to work, as in independent contractor status? I bet the union wouldn't like that! So may be now the union understands what the employer is going through?
Unions expect companies to pay a certain wage and if they dont, the union orders employees to strike causing huge loses to the company. Company is then forced to accept what the union wants, or continue to suffer.
Question is; "why are unions ordering these companies around? If it was not for the hard earned work of the owner; Investing his/her own money into the company, working long hours taking time away from family etc.-- the employee wouldnt have a job, let alone be able to pay union dues. Now, this isn't to say employees have not contributed to the employers wealth (because they have to a degree) I am saying employers deserve more of the reward then employees do, being that it was employers idea, and or funds that started the company in the first place. Unions are forcing employers to pay employees for ideas they did not create.
How would employee feel if employer demanded employees life savings ? Why should the employee give the employer his/her life savings when it was the employee who earned it? Do you see what I am getting at here?
Instead of the union forcing companies to do what they want, it is time to put a cap on what Unions can do. It is my opinion, unions are just as responsible for the recession as anyone else. Are so when they are motivated by greed; "Me, myself and I.... and to hell with the employers life savings and or sacrifices that he/she made to make what the company is today." Union motto.
I highly doubt union workers will end up on the poor street if wages are capped. If wages are capped, it allows employers to create more jobs for people who really need them.
Do you see.. Unions contibute to sky rocketing unemployment rate. Why do we support something that deprives the general population of jobs? Doesn't make sense. Does it? No it does not!
Union is one big special interest group and that is all it is-]

Dear Barack:
As you prepare to take office, I am so hopeful that you will learn from the lessons of the last Democrat Party president who failed, especially in his first term, to govern from the center. But due to your support of the Employee Free Choice Act, I am afraid the opposite is coming true. It is hard to imagine a place to the left of George McGovern on the political spectrum, but on this issue, you appear to be staking it out.
Even George McGovern says that, by doing away with the secret ballot election when unions attempt to organize a workplace, you will be going too far.
Please, sir, reconsider your suport of this proposed legislation.
George McGovern statement on Employee Free Choice Act:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afjp4Cx-3W0
Barack Obama statement on the Employee Free Choice Act:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMNVIQqatyU&feature=related
I heard another whopper about you a few weeks ago that I find hard to believe. I was told that you advocate ending the use of the secret ballot when unions attempt to organize a workplace? That couldn’t be true, could it?
A secret ballot is needed to allow people who are voting, no matter what they are voting for, the opportunity to cast their ballot in privacy. Only when there is a secret ballot is an individual able to make a decision free of intimidation and coercion. It is what separates a democracy from forms of government with puppet elections. The names Stalin and Castro come to mind.
The Employee Free Choice Act, which you said you would sign into law, takes the secret ballot out of the process by which unions attempt to organize a workplace. It tips the scales so far in favor of unions that employees who don’t want to be represented by a union don’t have a chance. All a union has to do is get a majority of a group of workers to sign a union card. The freedom that comes from a secret ballot would be replaced by potential intimidation at the tavern across the street from work.
Don’t get me wrong, Barack. In my line of work I have the honor of working with many proud and skilled union members. Unions have played an important place in American history helping workers gain important rights and benefits.
But unionization comes with higher costs and the decreased ability for American businesses to compete in the global marketplace. You know that. With such competition, unions have been losing members in great numbers in recent years.
Shouldn’t such an important workplace decision be made on a level playing field?
Please continue to allow American workers the opportunity to accept or reject a union free from coercion and intimidation. Don’t make the Employee Free Choice act the law in its current form.

* Politics in need of a Thesaurus – John McCain and Republican brethren are accusing Obama and liberals of having an agenda of Socialism. They fail to comprehend that “Socialism” and “fairness” are not synonymous. They fail to recognize that sharing the bounty is good for everyone. Our society works best when there is an engaged work force earning a reasonable wage. That has nothing to do with the indiscriminant distribution of wealth or resources. Ultra-conservative Henry Ford understood this principle. He paid his workers a higher wage than what was the standard at the time. He realized that if employees had sufficient income they would also become customers for the automobiles he produced.
In more recent years the marriage of Republicans, conservatives and special interests has resulted in the abandonment of the common good. Declining wages, increasing unemployment and dramatic increases in the concentration of wealth are evident in every study that examines U.S. economic conditions. Adjusting economic policy in order to revitalize what had been a vibrant middle class is not Socialism. It is intelligent Capitalism. On the other hand, not adjusting economic imbalances is exactly what leads to conditions that have spawned Socialism and Communism and revolution. I would suggest that Senator McCain and his Party are also in need of history books.
* Different roads offer a clear choice – I watched appearances of McCain and Obama this week. When McCain made a comment about Obama the crowd booed. McCain paused to allow the boos to resonate and then continued with his comments. When Obama made a statement about McCain there was a smattering of boos in the audience. Obama held up his hands in a halting fashion and said to the crowd, “We will have none of that.”
* A prescription for conservatives – It is understandable that some Republicans and conservatives find the McCain-Palin ticket unappealing but have anxiety about voting for a Democratic candidate or a Barack Obama who is perceived as left of center in political philosophy. Since I already prescribed Xanax for nervous voters in the previous blog I offer a non-pharmaceutical alternative. The website Conservatives for Change is a project featuring Republicans and Conservatives who, in their own words, explain why they are voting for Obama. Perhaps peer experiences will ease the transition. See McCain Effect below.
* Does McCain suffer from dementia, ignorance or bovine excreta? John McCain was interviewed on the Don Imus radio show. In reference to his VP selection Sarah Palin, McCain said, “I think she's the most qualified of any that has run recently for vice president, to tell you the truth.” McCain therefore concludes that Governor Palin possesses superior qualifications to that of Al Gore, Joe Lieberman, Dick Cheney and George H. W. Bush. Perhaps this explains McCain’s affinity for George W. Bush and why many serious voters have difficulty taking McCain seriously. In the categories of ”irony” “ludicrous” and “my mirror is broken”, this week McCain accused Barack Obama of being willing to say anything to win the election.
* Bradley Effect - Each day polling data increasingly favors Obama. Many supporters of the Illinois senator take this news favorably but with tempered optimism due to the Bradley Effect. Twenty-six years ago Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley, an African American, ran for governor of California. Prior to the election he led in the polls by 20%. He lost the election to George Deukmejian, a White American. It was concluded that many voters polled before the election said they favored Bradley but when it came time to pull the lever they could not vote for a Black man. I have seen comments suggesting that polling is significantly more sophisticated today and that more recent races between White and Black candidates demonstrated that polling reflected the final results. Such observations have not reduced the apprehension of many leading up to this year’s election.
* McCain Effect - I have been wondering if this year’s election may produce a McCain Effect. It appears possible that some Republicans and conservatives, as well as Whites who are reluctant to vote for a person of color, have told pollsters they will vote for McCain. Is it possible that some will stand in the polling booth and decide that deep down inside, in opposition to their inclinations, Obama is the right choice to be our nation’s 44th President?
* Palin Effect ~ defining a terrorist – I never imagined that my East coast major metropolitan viewpoint would be the same as someone from Alaska. What I did not realize is how far apart these perspectives can be. NBC’s Brian Williams interviewed Sara Palin this week. In the context of the 1960’s actions by Bill Ayers, Williams asked Palin if an abortion clinic bomber is a terrorist. Most would agree the question is moot but I find the answer telling. Palin responded, “There’s no question that Bill Ayers via his own admittance was one who sought to destroy our U.S. Capitol and our Pentagon. That is a domestic terrorist. There’s no question there. Now, others who would want to engage in harming innocent Americans or facilities that uh, it would be unacceptable. I don’t know if you’re going to use the word terrorist there.” Am I being cynical wondering if the darling of the extreme religious-right subtly is implying that an action is somehow more excusable if it is performed in an interpretation of the Almighty? I believe we call such folks “al Qaeda.”
* Economic realism – The implosion of Wall Street highlighted many Republican and conservative philosophies and policies that have been somewhere between bad and devastating for the vast majority of Americans. All of their recent finger pointing and misleading blame game tactics do not alter the results. As noted above the employment record is another proof-is-in-the-pudding moment. Republicans would have us believe that tax cuts for the wealthy will lead to greater investment in industry which will lead to greater employment. There may have been some merit to this strategy under different economic and workplace conditions but certainly not as it has been applied during the Bush administration. Articles this week pointed out that Clinton created 23 million jobs while Bush created 4.8 million. At the beginning of the 21st century the Trickle Down Theory may apply to a toddlers right leg but, as a strategy for the American economy, it has dried up. I would expect that under an Obama administration we would see intelligent tax incentives for business aimed at increasing employment while reducing the existing tax cut policies that are devoid of responsible requirements.
Another Republican strategy that I expect will merit demise is anti-unionism. The 20th century offered a history of the battle between unions and business. Each side had their victories and losses but what is clear is that when either side became too strong the common interest was hurt. Today we again see the result of business having become too dominate in this relationship. The unwritten contract between business and the Republican Party has resulted in union membership in private industry falling from 30% after World War II to 8% today. “The decline in union membership paralleled with a decline in real wages, retirement benefits, and quality of health care. To ensure that workers who wish to organize are able to do so, the House passed the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) in March 2007 with bipartisan support. In the Senate, however, a group of 48 conservatives successfully blocked the measure with a filibuster threat three months later.” I anticipate the passage of this bill in the next Congress.

I have been a Steelworker for over 35 years and with retirement coming I worry about medical insurance more than anything at this time in my life. Barack Obama has a medical plan that will not only help future retirees but those retirees that are feeling the crunch of medical expenses today. I also feel with this plan he will help all businesses by lowering medical insurance premiums by offering insurance to all Americans. Being a Union Activist my entire career I also find that Employee Free Choice Act co-sponsored by Senator Obama is what will bring union strength back and Barack Obama has pledged that he will sign it into law when he is elected President of the United States.
When did the word “Liberal” become a dirty word? I read articles in Letters to the Editor, and some people seem to think that merely labeling Obama as a “Liberal” ( insert shudder and gasps) is enough to make people not vote for him.
Well, I am a Liberal, I lean further toward things Liberals stand for: the common man, the American worker, labor unions’ right to exist, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, voting rights, and civil rights. The right of every person to be shown respect as a human being regardless of race, sexual orientation or religion. I believe in the individual’s right to decide how to live their life and what to do with their own body in their own privacy, and the right to access to medical and health care benefits, as do Liberals. I, as a Liberal, believe after working for 30 or 40 years and paying into a pension or 401K you have the right to collect a retirement. Liberals believe in fair taxes and expect fair taxes on the wealthy as well as the poor. We believe people don’t mind tax increases as long as they benefit all citizens and not just the top 10% of the wealthiest individuals and corporations. We believe tax cuts should be used judiciously and not just to win an election, but consider the current state of the country’s economy.
Liberals, myself included, believe in the right to voice an opinion, without fear of reprisal. We anticipate the hope to live in peace and not fear. We support policies that do not weigh our children, our grandchildren and our great-grandchildren with our irresponsible fiscal policies and lack of oversight, putting them deeper and deeper into debt. We value the opportunity to make a living wage, and being able to walk down the street without the fear of being shot.
Liberals espouse recognition of the value of education in our country and backing up that recognition by funding education for every child in America, as well as recognition of the value of our elderly and our obligations to our elders. Liberals talk about being willing to stop the discarding of the elderly into homes unfit for any human being, or relegate them to poverty and illness at the end of productive lives based on the mighty dollar. Liberals believe in the right to health care that does not force a choice between bankruptcy and medical care. The examples are legion, but if you want to know, talk to your neighbor.
The values Liberals hold I hold: love your neighbor as yourself, choose peace over war whenever possible, hold life (every life) in the highest esteem, empathy, understanding, trust, individual rights, and the respect for the opinions of others. None of us are less, for we are all intertwined and rooted in the same tree. That tree is the Tree of America, and it stands on the Planet Earth. Therefore, we Liberals think globally, trying to work with, rather than against our neighbors. Last of all, Liberals think for themselves and do not believe everything said to them from the pulpit or the soapbox. Instead they look for truth. As individuals we are not perfect, but we are not ashamed of our label either. I am proud to call myself a Liberal.

VOTE FOR CHANGE!! VOTE FOR A NEW AMERICA!! VOTE FOR AMERICAN VALUES! VOTE FOR OBAMA!!!
This is one of the best speeches made by anyone on the delicate subject of race and racism in this current presidential campaign. Below is the transcript of AFL-CIO's Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka. Enjoy the piece.
Peace,
Leslye J Allen
There's only one really bad reason to vote against him: because he's not white.
And I want to talk about that because I saw that for myself during the Pennsylvania primary.
I went back home to vote in Nemacolin and I ran into a woman I'd known for years. She was active in Democratic politics when I was still in grade school.
We got to talking and I asked if she'd made up her mind who she was supporting and she said: 'Oh absolutely, I'm voting for Hillary, there's no way I'd ever vote for Obama.'
Well, why's that? 'Because he's a Muslim.'
I told her, 'That's not true -- he's as much a Christian as you and me, so what if he's muslim.'
Then she shook her head and said, 'He won't wear an American flag pin.'
I don't have one on and neither do you.
But, 'C'mon, he wears one plenty of times. He just says it takes more than wearing a flag pin to be patriotic.'
'Well, I just don't trust him.'
Why is that?
Her voice dropped just a bit: 'Because he's black.'
I said, 'Look around. Nemacolin's a dying town. There're no jobs here. Kids are moving away because there's no future here. And here's a man, Barack Obama, who's going to fight for people like us and you won't vote for him because of the color of his skin.'
Brothers and sisters, we can't tap dance around the fact that there are a lot of folks out there just like that woman.
A lot of them are good union people; they just can't get past this idea that there's something wrong with voting for a black man. Well, those of us who know better can't afford to look the other way.
I'm not one for quoting dead philosophers, but back in the 1700s, Edmund Burke said: 'All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.' Well, there's no evil that's inflicted more pain and more suffering than racism -- and it's something we in the labor movement have a special responsibility to challenge.
It's our special responsibility because we know, better than anyone else, how racism is used to divide working people.
We've seen how companies set worker against worker -- how they throw whites a few extra crumbs off the table and how we all end up losing.
But we've seen something else, too. We've seen that when we cross that color line and stand together no one can keep us down.
That's why the CIO was created. That's why industrial unions were the first to stand up against lynching and segregation. People need to know that it was the Steel Workers Organizing Committee -- this union -- that was founded on the principal of organizing all workers without regard to race. That's why the labor movement -- imperfect as we are -- is the most integrated institution in American life.
I don't think we should be out there pointing fingers in peoples' faces and calling them racist; instead we need to educate them that if they care about holding on to their jobs, their health care, their pensions, and their homes -- if they care about creating good jobs with clean energy, child care, pay equity for women workers -- there's only going to be one candidate on the ballot this fall who's on their side... only one candidate who's going to stand up for their families... only one candidate who's earned their votes... and his name is Barack Obama!
And come November we are going to elect him president.
And after he's elected we are going to hit the ground running so that, years from now, we're going to be able to tell our grandchildren that 2008 was the year this country finally turned its back on men like George Bush and Dick Cheney and John McCain.
We're going to be able to say that 2008 was the year we started ending the war in Iraq so we could use that money to create new jobs building wind generators, solar collectors, clean coal technology and retrofitting millions of buildings all across this country
We're going to be able to look back and say that 2008 was the year the tide began to turn against the Rush Limbaughs, the Bill O'Reillys, the Ann Coulters and the right wing hate machine."

If McCain wants to Bailout the Wall Street Companies let him make that big mistake.
The American people must be heard in Washington and this weekend no one shoud support a
