It's interesting to note that New York City has a unique history and an operative metaphor in Airplanes and aircraft crash incidents. While some may note that the recent US Air "crash landing" into the Hudson River usurped President Bush's "Farewell Address", stealing media attention from his final moment, it's perhaps more interesting to note that the previous administration's entire tone and focus of its 8 year run is bookmarked by aircrashes; yet both very different. The Bush administration began with the first landmark aircrash... which set the entire tone for the term's myopic view, a solely fear and anger based focus on warfare, paranoic protectionism and punishment, whereas this second and last aircrash incident in New York brings their term to a close, with everyone landed beautifully, the pilot regarded as a hero, and all passengers vacating to safety. We are left with a spirit of Hope. Interesting and very different metaphors that happened by the landmark incidents of both aircrashes bookmarking the last regime's 8 years, as we are all left with a new celebratory sense of hope and a restored humanitariasm. Perhaps we are again free to fly.

LINCOLN & BARACK

LINCOLN'S GOOD KARMA LEGACY
Lincoln is one of a handful of presidents that touch me. I've been reading yet another biography of the man, and it leapt out at me from the pages. When Lincoln ran for president, he was a relatively new and unknown candidate from Illinois, a back-woods lawyer having only served one term in Congress. Not favored to win, he was under-estimated by pundits and opponents, and it was his gift for words and persuasive speaking that was his strongest asset. He was eloquent yet unassuming. One of his great addresses was at Cooper Union in NYC. His primary opponent was presumptive, and his loss to Lincoln shocked everyone. He healed many political divisions, by embracing those of opposing parties (ultimately appointing some of them to his cabinet). He avoided pitfalls by being patient, preserving and measured in his responses, short of being taken advantage of. Sound like anyone we know? How ironic and karmic that Lincoln would free the very people who's lineage would eventually carry his torch in a most passionate and inspirational way.

Did I miss any parallels? Please clue me in.

Lincoln could, and Barack can. Yes we can.

The Third Term-inator 4/4/07

I read last week that Bill Clinton is campaigning for his wife like he is "running for his third term in office". While I do feel horrible for the way he was hunted down by the Republicans in Congress during his second term (they clearly had an agenda to destroy him), I still can't see the justification for a Clinton third term. No amount of fundraising, campaigning, governing or authority will change the past. It's not fair to the American people to have the office of the President used as a way to avenge the misdeeds done to him during his time in Washington. It's just too late to go back and make it right. It will do absolutely nothing but mire us in the partisanship that has frozen our country for 20 years. And now that I think of it, it makes me understand the current President Bush's motivations: it's feasible that a small part of him wanted to be President, and in turn invade Iraq, to avenge his father's re-election loss and his failure to oust Saddam Hussein. Well, enough already. No one should be running for office based on what has happened in the past. It's time to move forward. Just remember, you can't have a dynasty without the nasty.
