Desperate as he is to act as if he's on a 'research' row and making a show of someone who's really "looking at the region from a broader angle", he did talk at first quite smoothly, dancing around and mentioning "other" problems we the USA have (supposedly) created in the region, like Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran (no, he didn't mention Carter's role in indirectly overthrowing the Shah, that led to the current Islamofascistic totalitarianism), you almost thought that Rashid might really be an academic, in the real sense of the word.
But as an average Arab Muslim "academic" he can never escape his burning Arab-racism against the Jews, though polishing his way to the maximum, he had to come to his essential venomous point, all in all, his punch line is really, the same old hateful cliche theme, "It's all Israel's fault", especially towards the end, when he was asked some questions, you could see how he was "lit" as if by a switch that turns on the Arab "moderates" hatred flames - they can never seem to resist, and fall into it each and every time.To his credit, most Arab propagandists are less patient... you don't have to wait even that long to see their outbursts.It was a small room, filled by either Arabs, or the gullible, one Arab "American" journalist is even a brazen open Jihadists-Hamas-Hezbollah supporter, none has asked about his propaganda statement that Iran fears Israel's nukes - as a "reason" for why they might be pursuing nuclear weapons, no one has asked the obvious: Did (democratic) Israel ever threaten to wipe out (oppressive) Iran like the Islamic fascist genocidal Republic did? or did Israel ever attack Iran like Iran attacked Israel via Hezbullah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad?

Israel Is Much Too Nice

Just like America, Israel is much too kind to its enemies. Had America fought the war in Iraq in the same manner used by Roosevelt during WWII, Iraq would have been over 2 years ago--and it would be much closer to a real democracy. Israel--the only country to use rubber bullets against evil; the only country to use pinpoint targeted assassination to destroy monsters who plan mass murder against civilians; the only country to drop leaflets written in Arabic to warn population centers that the bombs are coming; the only country to absorb rocket attacks against totally innocent civilians for 6 years with almost no response, gets labeled, "the bad guys." Imagine, tiny Israel continuously being blamed for using "excessive, disproportionate force" by the media, the Arab/Muslim world, the Vatican, Ireland and that ultimate pimp, Jacques Chirac.
Please, I need a barf bag! These bleeding heart leftist/liberals want us to believe that the innocent (sic) Lebanese government and its people never saw any of the 13,000 rockets being shipped around their country which were pointed towards Israel. No Lebanese ever came across 20,000 Hezbollah fighters with weapons over their shoulders and heavy artillery, which covered 90% of the territory south of Beirut. Prime Minister Fouad Siniora knew nothing about large weapons shipments sent via plane, ship and truck from Syria, Iran and Egypt. Please, I need a barf bag! The reason that the Arab/Muslim world uses the terminology, "excessive force on innocent civilians," is because according to the Koran they are supposed to be tough and win the battles. Yet a small bunch of bible studying Yeshiva boys and "weak looking" Jews in Israel completely decimated all those tough Arab countries in 1948, 1967 and 1973.
The Muslim world of over 1 billion people can never defeat 5 million Jews, no matter how hard they try--and they all know it. So they have turned to the Joseph Goebbals method of "Propaganda Weaponry," and most of the world, except for America, has fallen for it. America is without question, a much better, more moral country than all the rest of the world combined, by a factor of 1000.
The entire world sees this fact quite clearly, which is the reason why America is constantly being criticized. It is difficult for other nations to see goodness prevail, when they had absolutely nothing to do with it. So how and why did all this begin? As usual, it is blamed on the age old Arab-Israeli problem, a code word for the Muslim-Jewish battle, aka Islam versus the Judeo/Christian world. According to the Koran, it should be a lot easier for Islamicists to prevail, since they have Mohammed on their side. Well, the God of Moses seems to be superior, a smack in the face to over 1 billion people. There is a man in Iran who considers himself to be a present day Messiah, a prophet cut from the same kaffiah as Mohammed. His name--Ahmadinejad (pronounced "A--mad--dog--on--Jihad"). Denying The Holocaust, calling Israel a Nazi state, labeling Americans infidels are just a few of his many talents. Unfortunately, it is people like him and Osama that make Islam appear to be a total fraud.
The crazy mullahs throughout the Arab/Muslim world refuse to acknowledge the direct, obvious involvement in current events of the One true God on earth, who began his reign in the Old and New Testament. Of course the secular media will never acknowledge an obvious truth when it emanates from a religious perspective. They are simply too sophisticated to believe in so called "voodoo."
The key message of Judaism and Christianity is to make God's world a better place. It seems that God checked his "Moral Radar" here on earth, only to discover the evil of Radical Islam, a cancer matasticizing throughout the Middle East. To protect this terrific world from evil, God initially used the Palestinians, who He first tried to placate by permitting Israel to give up some land which He originally promised to the Jews. God made the Jews leave Gaza "temporarily," in order to show the world that even when Israel painfully gives up territory without getting a thing in return, peace is still impossible. Instead of taking the greenhouses that Jews built in Gaza to create an industry which would cultivate and export flowers to Europe, thus creating a vibrant economy, the Palestinian Arabs immediately destroyed all the irrigation piping and greenhouses because "the Jews" built them. No thank you's, no gratitude--only terrorism in return. Please--I need a barf bag! God was not very happy with the deeds of Palestinian Arabs heaped upon the original Palestinians--the Jews. So, the God of the Torah made the evil Palestinian Arabs sneak into Israeli territory and kidnap Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier. Big mistake, because this action gave Israel the moral authority to "burn evil out of the Palestinian midst," as the Bible teaches.
Somehow, the world reaction to this event was not the usual overreaction condemning Israel. Palestinian ingratitude was recognized and except for a few radical leftists, the coffee shops throughout Europe ignored the situation, allowing the socialists to drink their morning kava and read the newspapers. Again, the secular world has not paid attention to one of the most important statements in the Bible--"Those who bless the Jews will be blessed, and those who curse the Jews will be cursed."
No country in history has blessed the Jews more than America, and no country is as blessed today. No countries throughout history have cursed the Jews more than the Arab/Muslim world, and no countries have been more cursed than those nations today. With Southern Evil being contained, Northern Evil was now growing uncontrollably to Israel's north. So again, God pulled a few more strings and "allowed" evil men to cross the border into Israel and kidnap two Israeli soldiers. Unfortunately, those Hezbollah terrorists have "Free Will," which resulted in four dead Israelis. So now the cancer is finally being cleaned out by the IDF surgeons, in one of the most ethical war surgeries on record. Decent religious people around the world understand that there is no need to worry about goodness being triumphant, since the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is with Israel.
This is the reason why Israel can do virtually whatever it desires against the evil terrorists and the nations that harbor them, without much of a response. Let the critics say whatever they want. Ahmadinejad is just a hooker for the mullah pimps in his country, who all realize that the prophecies found in the Koran are just not happening. Quite a rude awakening for those Islamic religious figures who see more truth and strength in the Old and New Testament; which is why they are trying to go nuclear. What these Iranian fools do not realize is that if they attack Israel or America, they will receive the same results as the Palestinians and Lebanese. So bring it on Mr. Mad Dog Jihad, and you can rest assured that the Iranian oil fields will have signs in Hebrew very shortly. Can any war be won when this is the nature of the discussion in the countries fighting the war? Can any war be won when one of the combatants voluntarily limits itself in this manner?Could World War II have been won by Britain and the United States if the two countries did not have it in them to firebomb Dresden and nuke Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Didn't the willingness of their leaders to inflict mass casualties on civilians indicate a cold-eyed singleness of purpose that helped break the will and the back of their enemies?
Didn't that singleness of purpose extend down to the populations in those countries in those days, who would have and did support almost any action at any time that would lead to the deaths of Germans and Japanese?What if the tactical mistake we made in Iraq was that we didn't kill enough Sunnis in the early going to intimidate them and make them so afraid of us they would go along with anything? Wasn't the survival of Sunni men between the ages of 15 and 35 the reason there was an insurgency and the basic cause of the sectarian violence now?If you can't imagine George W. Bush issuing such an order, is there any American leader you could imagine doing so?And if America can't do it, can Israel?
Could Israel - even hardy, strong, universally conscripted Israel - possibly stomach the bloodshed that would accompany the total destruction of Hezbollah?If Lebanon's 300-plus civilian casualties are already rocking the world, what if it would take 10,000 civilian casualties to finish off Hezbollah? In March 2002, Israel suffered the worst month of terror attacks in its history. Over two hundred people were killed and many hundreds more injured. This wave of attacks climaxed at Netanya�s Park Hotel, where on Seder night a suicide bomber murdered thirty people and injured scores more. In response to this horrifying crime, the Israeli government undertook the sort of military operation many Israelis had been clamoring for during the previous months. Operation Defensive Shield was launched; it turned out to be decisive in greatly reducing Palestinian terror in the following days and months. The most well-known focus of military action during this operation was Jenin, the West Bank city considered the capital of Palestinian suicide-bombing...
Goldberg does not confine himself to the military action alone but also tells the stories of the soldiers' families. He depicts the ethnic mix of Israelis and their moral and religious strengths. The unit he concentrates upon consists in large part of what are known in Israel as "national-religious" soldiers, though it includes a good mix of other types, as well.
Remarkably, Goldberg shows soldiers fighting for their lives and, at the same time, contending with moral issues, seeking to fulfill their extremely unpleasant duties in the most humane way possible. Despite snipers nests, booby traps, ambushes, and above all their own losses and injuries, these soldiers maintain their own dignity and consideration for their enemies. Many within Israel claim this consideration was taken too far in Jenin: had Israel acted as "normal army," some say, and bombed the camp from above (as, for example, the U.S. did when it razed a building in Baghdad in an effort to kill Saddam Hussein), sixteen of the Israelis soldiers who were killed in an ambush in the camp would still be alive today.
Goldberg's book illustrates the thesis that to truly understand the way an army works, one must look at relations within platoons and small units. The friendship networks Goldberg presents enforce our sense of how loyalty and courage play a central role in the life of the everyday soldier. There are no superheroes here, but plenty of quietly courageous people, a number of whom regrettably are lost in the battle.
Clearly and movingly written, Goldberg's book is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand the challenges Israel, its people, and its soldiers have faced in the past three years, and continue to face now.

Israel's restraint in the face of Kassam rockets launched from Palestinian territory is said to be heightening tensions in the Middle East.
Two rockets slammed into Sderot, one of them striking a community center and another hitting a bus. Three people were injured. A separate attack hit the port city of Ashkelon. In total, 45 rockets have been launched from Gaza into Israel since the November 26 truce went into effect.
Israel's lack of retaliatory response has been widely decried as "provocative." 'The failure of the Jews to strike back reveals their evil scheming nature,' said Sheik Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah. "It's inhuman to adhere to a truce under such conditions. The evidence of the Jews' link to satanic powers couldn't be clearer. For the love of God they must be exterminated."
Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad called Israel's actions 'sinister.' "Throughout recorded history the Jews have tried to lull the unwary by their nonviolent responses to pogroms and repression," Ahmadinejad warned. "Their diabolical cunning brought down the great Adolf Hitler. It will bring down the world if we are not careful."
The United Nations has promised to look into the matter. "We should not allow ourselves to be fooled by Jewish trickery," outgoing Secretary-General Kofi Annan advised. "If Jews are being attacked there must be a good reason. We will get to the bottom of this."

(Updated Mar 4, 2008)...That same month, the IAF warned Muhammad Weil Baroud, responsible for firing Kassam rockets at Israel, to evacuate his home in Beit Lahiya in advance of an air strike. Instead, hundreds of locals, mostly women and children, were recruited to Baroud's house. Israel suspended the air strike, lest these human shields be harmed. In response to the incident, Hamas crowed: "We won. From now on we will form human chains around every house threatened with demolition."
The above episode illustrates the potential problems with Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna'i's proposal to bulldoze houses from which rockets are fired. The same goes for suggestions such as warning systems giving Gazan civilians time to get out. Even smoke bombs directed at precise coordinates to further warn civilians to depart - in advance of live fire and the destruction of launch sites - could be thwarted by human shields.
Principled despite its vilified reputation, Israel wrestles with a wrenching quandary callously imposed upon it. But Israel shouldn't be the only one to grapple with the ruthlessness of terrorists toward their human shields. A mosque on one side of Manger Square stands directly opposite the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, while in the evening the muezzin's call to prayer clashes with the peal of church bells. Shops selling Santa Claus outfits and mother-of-pearl statuettes of the Virgin Mary have their shutters painted a sun-bleached green, the colour of Islam. And in the Al-Jacir Palace, Bethlehem's only luxury hotel, there is a baubled Christmas tree in reception and a card showing the direction of Mecca in the rooms.
George Rabie, a 22-year-old taxi driver from the Bethlehem suburb of Beit Jala, is proud of his Christianity, even though it puts him in daily danger. Two months ago, he was beaten up by a gang of Muslims who were visiting Bethlehem from nearby Hebron and who had spotted the crucifix hanging on his windscreen. "Every day, I experience discrimination," he says. " "It is a type of racism. We are a minority so we are an easier target. Many extremists from the villages are coming into Bethlehem." Jeriez Moussa Amaro, a 27-year-old aluminium craftsman from Beit Jala is another with first-hand experience of the appalling violence that Christians face. Five years ago, his two sisters, Rada, 24, and Dunya, 18, were shot dead by Muslim gunmen in their own home. Their crime was to be young, attractive Christian women who wore Western clothes and no veil. Rada had been sleeping with a Muslim man in the months before her death.
A terrorist organisation, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, issued a statement claiming responsibility, which said: "We wanted to clean the Palestinian house of prostitutes." Jeriez says: "A Christian man is weak compared to a Muslim man. "They have bigger, more powerful families and they know people high up in the Palestinian authority." The fear of attack has prompted many Christian families to emigrate, including Mr Canawati's sister, her husband and their three children who now live in New Jersey in America. "I want to leave but nobody will buy my business," Mr Canawati says. "I feel trapped. We are isolated." This isolation was heightened when, last year, Bethlehem found itself behind Israel's security wall, a 400-mile-long concrete barrier which separates Jewish and Palestinian areas and is designed to stop suicide bombers - in 2004, half the Israeli fatalities caused by such attacks were committed by extremists from Bethlehem. Last year, tourists trying to get to the town were forced to queue for hours as their papers were checked, while Bethlehem inhabitants going the other way must now apply for an infrequently granted permit to visit Jerusalem, barely ten minutes away by car. "It is like living in a prison," says Shadt Abu-Ayash, a 29-year-old Roman Catholic shopkeeper. The Roman Catholic Mayor of Bethlehem, Dr Victor Batarseh, says: "The political situation in Lebanon and the instability of politics in Palestine has affected tourism and pilgrimage. "Hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops are owned by mostly Christians so it affects them badly. "We have 65 per cent unemployment and about 2,000 bedrooms in hotels that are empty." Bethlehem's hotel owners estimate that tourist numbers have dropped sharply, from 91,276 each month for the millennium celebrations in 2000 to little more than 1,500 a month now.
During the past six years, 50 restaurants, 28 hotels and 240 souvenir shops have closed. Samir Qumsieh is general manager of Al-Mahed - Nativity - which is the only Christian television station in Bethlehem. He has had death threats and visits from armed men demanding three acres of his land - and he is now ready to leave. "As Christians, we have no future here," he says. "We are melting away. Next summer I will leave this country to go to the States. How can I continue? A Saudi columnist, Muhammad bin ‘Abd Al-Latif Aal Al-Sheikh, published a series of articles in the Saudi daily Al-Jazirah in July, attacking the ideology of the Al-Salafiyya movement (long associated with Saudi Wahhabi Islam). He said that the ideology of this movement was similar to, or even worse than, the Nazi ideology, and that it should be dealt accordingly. Mr. Al-Sheikh cited the conference on “de-Nazification” held in Potsdam, Germany, shortly following Nazi Germany’s surrender in 1945 to serve as precedence today. He explained it was credited with uprooting the culture of Nazism from Europe and that the conference made Nazism into something similar to a crime, not just in judicial and political terms, but also in terms of culture, ideology, and the media. Just as the world uprooted Nazism at the Potsdam conference, Al-Sheikh explained that the West should follow suit with Islamism after the attacks of September 11, 2001: “I still believe that one of the primary missions of the international community today is to repeat its experience with Nazism and to deal with this dangerous barbarian culture [of Islamofascism] exactly as it dealt with the Nazi culture. Defending the term "Islamofascism." - By Christopher Hitchens [0ct. 2007]The term Islamofascism was first used in 1990 in Britain's Independent newspaper by Scottish writer Malise Ruthven, who was writing about the way in which traditional Arab dictatorships used religious appeals in order to stay in power. I didn't know about this when I employed the term "fascism with an Islamic face" to describe the attack on civil society on Sept. 11, 2001, and to ridicule those who presented the attack as some kind of liberation theology in action. "Fascism with an Islamic face" is meant to summon a dual echo of both Alexander Dubcek and Susan Sontag (if I do say so myself), and in any case, it can't be used for everyday polemical purposes, so the question remains: Does Bin Ladenism or Salafism or whatever we agree to call it have anything in common with fascism? I think yes. The most obvious points of comparison would be these: Both movements are based on a cult of murderous violence that exalts death and destruction and despises the life of the mind. ("Death to the intellect! Long live death!" as Gen. Francisco Franco's sidekick Gonzalo Queipo de Llano so pithily phrased it.) Both are hostile to modernity (except when it comes to the pursuit of weapons), and both are bitterly nostalgic for past empires and lost glories. Both are obsessed with real and imagined "humiliations" and thirsty for revenge. Both are chronically infected with the toxin of anti-Jewish paranoia (interestingly, also, with its milder cousin, anti-Freemason paranoia). Both are inclined to leader worship and to the exclusive stress on the power of one great book. Both have a strong commitment to sexual repression—especially to the repression of any sexual "deviance"—and to its counterparts the subordination of the female and contempt for the feminine. Both despise art and literature as symptoms of degeneracy and decadence; both burn books and destroy museums and treasures. Fascism (and Nazism) also attempted to counterfeit the then-success of the socialist movement by issuing pseudo-socialist and populist appeals. It has been very interesting to observe lately the way in which al-Qaida has been striving to counterfeit and recycle the propaganda of the anti-globalist and green movements. (See my column on Osama Bin Laden's Sept. 11 statement.) There isn't a perfect congruence. Historically, fascism laid great emphasis on glorifying the nation-state and the corporate structure. There isn't much of a corporate structure in the Muslim world, where the conditions often approximate more nearly to feudalism than capitalism, but Bin Laden's own business conglomerate is, among other things, a rogue multinational corporation with some links to finance-capital. As to the nation-state, al-Qaida's demand is that countries like Iraq and Saudi Arabia be dissolved into one great revived caliphate, but doesn't this have points of resemblance with the mad scheme of a "Greater Germany" or with Mussolini's fantasy of a revived Roman empire? Technically, no form of Islam preaches racial superiority or proposes a master race. But in practice, Islamic fanatics operate a fascistic concept of the "pure" and the "exclusive" over the unclean and the kufar or profane. In the propaganda against Hinduism and India, for example, there can be seen something very like bigotry. In the attitude to Jews, it is clear that an inferior or unclean race is being talked about (which is why many Muslim extremists like the grand mufti of Jerusalem gravitated to Hitler's side). In the attempted destruction of the Hazara people of Afghanistan, who are ethnically Persian as well as religiously Shiite, there was also a strong suggestion of "cleansing." And, of course, Bin Laden has threatened force against U.N. peacekeepers who might dare interrupt the race-murder campaign against African Muslims that is being carried out by his pious Sudanese friends in Darfur. http://www.slate.com/id/2176389/
Islamo-Fascism Denial [Oct. 23 07] There is nothing artful or contrived in the term "Islamo-Fascism." It is derived from history itself. Hassan al Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood (from which today's radical Muslim groups descend) was, after all, an open admirer and supporter of Adolf Hitler -- as was the principal theorist of the modern jihad, Sayyid Qutb. During World War II, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, cousin of Yasir Arafat and spiritual godfather of Palestinian nationalism, Hajj Amin al-Husseini, prouncounced his pro-Nazi sympathies openly and proudly. In May 1941, he issued a fatwa calling upon the Germans to bomb Tel Aviv, and in November 1941 traveled to Berlin and met with Hitler. He implored the Nazi dictator to help implement a Final Solution in the Middle East. Then he went to the Balkans, where he spearheaded the creation of Muslim units of the Waffen SS. In terms of the specific terrorist groups and entities mentioned in the MSA packet, all of them -- along with many others -- have indeed made clear that they wish to destroy the United States and dominate the world under an oppressive caliphate -- that is, a unified Islamic state ruled by Islamic Sharia law: Al-Qaeda: Osama bin Laden has said that the 9/11 attacks strengthened the Muslims, "which is a very good sign and a great step towards the unity of Muslims and establishing the Righteous Islamic Khilafah [caliphate] insha-Allah [Allah willing]." His second-in-command, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, has declared: "The war with Israel is not about a treaty, a cease-fire agreement, Sykes-Picot borders, national zeal, or disputed borders. It is rather a jihad for the sake of God until the religion of God is established. It is jihad for the liberation of Palestine, all Palestine, as well as every land that was a home for Islam, from Andalusia to Iraq. The whole world is an open field for us." Hamas: The Hamas Charter sets out its Islamic mission as global: "Its spatial dimension extends wherever on earth there are Muslims, who adopt Islam as their way of life; thus, it penetrates to the deepest reaches of the land and to the highest spheres of Heavens. . . . By virtue of the distribution of Muslims, who pursue the cause of the Hamas, all over the globe, and strive for its victory, for the reinforcement of its positions and for the encouragement of its Jihad, the Movement is a universal one." Universal in what way? The Palestinian Sheikh Ibrahim Madhi exhorted believers in 2002 "Oh beloved, look to the East of the earth, find Japan and the ocean; look to the West of the earth, find [some] country and the ocean. Be assured that these will be owned by the Muslim nation, as the Hadith says . . . 'from the ocean to the ocean.'" The Muslim Brotherhood: Its founder, Hasan Al-Banna, wrote that "it is a duty incumbent on every Muslim to struggle towards the aim of making every people Muslim and the whole world Islamic, so that the banner of Islam can flutter over the earth and the call of the Muezzin can resound in all the corners of the world: God is greatest [Allahu akbar]!" Despite recent claims to the contrary, there is no evidence that the Brotherhood has renounced this goal. Hezbollah: Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has made clear that he wishes to pose a threat to the United States: "Let the entire world hear me. Our hostility to the Great Satan is absolute.…I conclude my speech with the slogan that will continue to reverberate on all occasions so that nobody will think that we have weakened. Regardless of how the world has changed after 11 September, Death to America will remain our reverberating and powerful slogan: Death to America." The Islamic Republic of Iran: While as a Shi'ite he does not wish to see the establishment of a caliphate, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad harbors similar dreams of Islamic domination. He said in 2005: "we will soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism and will breathe in the brilliant time of Islamic sovereignty over today's world." Why 'Islamofascism' correctly identifies threat [Oct. 25 07] Islamofascism is an ideology that seeks a global theocracy under the dictatorship of a caliph. Everyone will be converted to their extremist interpretation of Islam, and any one who resists will be killed in the name of Allah. These extremists, however, do not represent the basic beliefs of Islam, and their message and methods resemble Nazis more than Muslims. Their goals are almost a mirror image of Hitler's dreams of world domination and extermination of the Jews, except their justification claims to be rooted in Islam rather than German nationalism. How is "Islamofascism" a racist term? It isn't. The term has nothing to do with the ethnicity of our enemy, nor should it. The term is a fusion of Islam - which is a religion and not a race - and fascism. Most of the terrorists are ethnically Arabic, but the membership of al-Qaida and similar networks is not exclusively Arabic. The focus of the word is fascism, which is used to describe the terrorists' methods and goals. How does the phrase "militant fundamentalist Muslims" more accurately describe who we are fighting? It doesn't. Our enemy is indeed militant and claims to be Muslim, but their breed of Islam is not fundamentalist. The fundamentals of Islam are faith, worship, charity, sacrifice and pilgrimage. Islamofascism: Why It Is Fascism and Why Hating It Isn't Racist [Dec. 2007] Islam is not a race. Even its harshest critics, if they limit their criticism to doctrine and to those only who follow it, are not to be labeled bigoted or racist. Religion is an idea, a belief system not immune from mockery or even detestation, and abhorrence for it is perfectly ethical (and legal, at least in this country). Succumbing to political correctness would have me now declaring impartiality for all the monotheisms, claiming an equality for each theology. I am all for equal-time ridicule, but not today. So let me be clear. There is very little about the Islamic faith, in particular, that I find believable or inspirational. The given-at-birth compulsory submission to a deity –– as its translation boasts –– is not my bag. An illiterate businessman-turned-general talking to angels and going on fantastical night journeys across the sky, taking six-year-olds as his wife, invading and converting large portions of planet, insisting his word alone is the final and unalterable directive of the divine… None of this makes me want to humble myself, get on my knees, and bow my head. I look at the life of Muhammad –– the pedophilia, the megalomania, the conquests –– and see John Mark Karr with an army. But my contempt for this theological arrogance does not render a hatred for, or suspicion of, Muslims as individuals or as a people; nor will it, nor should it. I have a fair amount of Muslim friends, some of them very good friends, and, in the mold of Dr. King’s litmus test, I judge them, like everyone else, based upon the content of their character –– not their genetic makeup. This is not racism anymore than disdain for Marxism is racism; anymore than abstract anticommunism undermines the concreteness of a beautiful Cuban girl, or the sincerity of a Russian acquaintance, for instance. Those on campus who were wearing green to protest the original protesting of fascism should at least forfeit to irony: the green they don takes us back the “green shirts” of Haj Amin al Husseini, the Palestinian mufti and long time Hitler companion and proxy, as well as the Nazi-admiring Hassan al Banna, brown-shirt wannabe and founder of the Muslim Brotherhood. The lack of study into the fascist origins of contemporary Middle Eastern movements is just another sad example of Western self-loathing and academic indifference, but thankfully we have colleagues like Ryan Mauro to shed some light for us. How quickly we forget that Mussolini, for example, was admiringly called Musa Nili across the Arab world. Who remembers the Waffen SS hit-squads that armed the warriors of Grand Mufti Husseini –– plush with Third Reich subsidies –– to liquefy anti-Nazi citizens of the Baltic? Did your last professor point out that the predecessors of al Qaida –– who Hitler called his Gebirgsjäger Muslim killers –– slaughtered 100,000 innocents by 1943? It continues: Nazi agent General Khairallah Tulfah would go on to raise and mentor his Tikriti village nephew, Saddam Hussein. Future Egyptian presidents Nasser and Sadat –– supposed secularists –– mingled with the Brotherhood, which in turn spawned Egyptian Islamic Jihad, cradle of al Qaida linchpin Dr. al Zawahiri. (Nasser would later rely on ex-Gestapo goon Joachim Daumling to craft his own secret police force.) Hitler’s propagandist Johannes von Leers would flee postwar Germany, change his name to Omar Amin, and become a lead official in Egypt’s information ministry, just as Sami al Joundi of the Syrian Ba’ath would brag, “We admired the Nazis. We were immersed in Nazi literature… we were the first who thought of a translation of Mein Kempf.” (Eichmann aide Alois Brunner would also assist the Assads in Damascus.) I could go on, but must I really? When defending the label of fascist, however, none of this fascist-entrenched history really matters. The premise of subservience to a celestial dominion and the coerced obedience to the earthly holy men who implement this dominion is enough: it’s Islamic and it’s fascistic. It is a creed that seeks to control what you think, say, hear, read, eat and drink; who you talk to, who you befriend, and who you hold hands with. This is the root basis of totalitarianism and it’s all in your God-given Qur’an. Societies, cultures, and peoples can most certainly change, but self-described infallible doctrine cannot. It was not designed to reform. Its divinity and irreversibility is the reason for its existence. There used to be a proud secular tradition of liberal antifascism, but the veneer of multiculturalism and relativism has prodded such thinkers into a state of fear. Many are afraid to come across as intolerant of intolerance, lest they seem as if they are asserting political supremacy or cultural superiority. This is why Western operas have been canceled, why cartoons have been taken out of circulation, why movies have been taken off air, and why journalists and authors with prices on their heads are in hiding all across Europe –– all products of a free and wonderfully crude culture under threat from book-burning mullahs. But there is good news. You do not have to oblige yourself into justifying deplorable atrocities in the name of “understanding.” You do not have to defend the apocalyptic Haghani Circle of Iran, or the Salafist lecturers in Pakistan, or the Wahhabi royal family. You do not have to applaud the “transparency” of the Iranian committee entitled the “Council for Spreading Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Thoughts.” When Hina Saleem’s father cuts her throat, buries her in the yard, and faces her head towards Mecca before rigamortis sets in –– for the sin of loving an Italian man –– and most of the Islamic organizations in Europe (from the Union of Islamic Communities in Italy to the Islamic Cultural Association in Brescia) defend the murderer, not the victim, you do not have to conscript yourself into appreciating or defending this insanity. You’re allowed to hate it. Not all hate is improper. My hatred of the fascistic impulses of archaic shari’a law stems not from ignorance of “the other,” but from knowledge.
