Whatever happened to that transparency promise that Obama made while on his campaign trail? Is this promise just going to be one of the 514 other promises that he made and seems to have slipped his mind? He promised to place each bill that was coming up for a vote to place on a website for five days so that the people would have time to read it and get in touch with their congressmen and tell them how they wanted them to vote. This was going to be the most transparent government in history. What happened to this promise and what else do we not expect to get?
It was never made clear that we were going to be stock holders in the car industry, insurance industry or the banking industry either. This is why Obama will not place these bills online for us to see. The people would not have allowed such tom foolery for one this goes entirely against the Constitution. Everything that this man has done since his first day in office is to shread the Constitution of the United States of America.
The cap and trade bill that the congress passed and will go to the senate in August, does anyone remember seeing it posted anywhere for the American public to reveue? No, you didn't because this in reality is the largest tax increase in the history of this country. And guess what? Our representatives did not read this bill either!
I'm happy that I was able to get out and vote for the Obama/Biden ticket this morning. My polling location is in one of Boston's black neighborhoods, and the poll workers at my site on Townsend Street did a great job.
Voting was a family event, as grandparents, parents, and children wanted to share in this history making process. While in line, I saw elderly people with canes who could barely walk, but they were excited about voting for Barack Obama for President. There were teenagers who were thrilled to be casting thier first vote ever for Barack Obama. Even would-be thugs were waiting in line, and they were excited to display their Barack Obama buttons.
There were so many happy people at my polling site. As long as some of these folks stay excited about participating in the community and our country, Barack's campaign will continue to yield benefits for years and generations to come.
I found myself watching an Obama rally live online at Pueblo, CO the other day and I found it interesting that he made mention of something to the effect of "stop watching the cable news networks...." The gist of this part of his speech was something I've been writing about on this blog for at least two years and that is....think for yourselves, find out the REAL facts and don't believe everything you hear or read. I'm not telling you to vote for one candidate or the other (even though I'd like to ;) ) I'm telling you to be an educated, informed voter. Watch the debates, rallies, read the transcripts, think for yourselves. Seek out other news sources, read world historical facts, be a critical thinker.
Regardless of your political affiliation, get out and exercise your right to vote! As a campaign volunteer, that is our first mission which is to make sure that you know that this is an important event, your vote counts, and that you need to get out and VOTE!!
For those of you that are undecided and/or want to know more about the candidate I'm voting for, Obama, here are only a few of the reasons that he has my vote!
I'm voting for Obama because I'm an advocate for education and that should be a top priority. One thing I have learned in graduate school is the ability to be a 'critical thinker' and question everything. I think critical thinking skills should be taught earlier. Regarding education, Obama would like to propose a plan where if a young person gives their country military service, community service or join the Peace Corps as an example, then your education will be paid for. I've worked hard for my degrees and have great debt. I think it is an awesome philanthropic experience for young people besides having a way to gain an education.
Energy: A proposed investment of about $15 billion a year in renewable sources of energy to create five million new, green jobs over the next decade. Jobs building solar panels and wind turbines. Jobs that ultimately get us away from outsourcing and importing from Middle East dictators.
Healthcare: Reengineering the way healthcare and insurance companies work and making sure more people have access to health care. If you view the nationalization of health care as socialist, then so be it. There is no reason why we have the resources, technology, expertise and medicine and let people die or suffer because of insurance technicalities and so on.
I'm not opposed to raising taxes to pay for these things. However, his tax plan is to not raise taxes on anyone making below $250,000 which includes 98% of small business owners. We will need to make sacrifices. We are all in this together.
I support our troops and their safety, but it is time for the war in Iraq to be over and bring them all home. For the last 8 years, war profiteers have run rampant and pumped up the military industrial complex yet again.
I could go on, but I did say I would only give a few reasons! This election has me fired up. All we can do is vote for the candidate that we believe can deliver what they promise, or what they 'want' to do if elected. It is not just up to the President, but Congress as well. So, vote in every election, not just the Presidential elections but Congressional as well.
Whatever your affiliation, get out and vote!
"We are not red states. We are not blue states. We are the United States of America." ~ Barack Obama
I feel lately as though I’ve just awakened from a long nap during which entire countries have come into existence and then faded away and the people inhabiting those countries have lived, grown, died, evolved and devolved in societies that were once budding democracies but became stultifying, repressive regimes -- outposts for the evil empire. I feel as though I’ve wiped the crust from my long-shut eyes and now see everything around me as it is. I haven’t done that since I was a child.

Regardless of the outcome of the presidential election on Tuesday its close will be welcome. Presidential politics have been in the forefront for almost two years and in recent months the calls, the mailings, the emailings and the television and radio ads have become burdensome. At the same time, the number of voter registrations and anticipated voter turnout should be a high mark in our democratic tradition. There still are concerns about Republican attempts to disenfranchise voters not prone to the GOP and unreliable voting machines, but these potential disruptions can lead to systemic improvements if the activism seen in this election remains energized. Safeguards for voter rights and voting systems require an upgrade.
McCain and Obama continue to offer striking differences in content and demeanor. Obama concentrates on issues important to Americans. The McCain campaign concentrates on characterizing Obama as a Socialist, a Marxist and a supporter of terrorists. Perhaps Mr. McCain does not sufficiently believe in his own platform that he has to emphasize empty issues that lack gravitas. Obama’s tax plan, ideas for economic recovery, foreign policy strategies, energy solutions and prescriptions for health care inadequacies and inequities is what most of us care about. A poll on Thursday indicated that 59% of voters felt that Sarah Palin was not prepared to be Vice President. The Palin selection was emblematic of a McCain candidacy constructed to appeal to a narrow base and plagued by impetuous execution. The Palin nomination understandably brought into question McCain’s judgment and ability to make sound decisions. Questionable economic stances and neocon/myopic foreign policy have not added to his appeal or credibility. The John McCain candidacy has proven to be a disappointment for many Independents, Republicans and even Democrats who once admired the long-serving Arizona senator.
* Under the radar ~ Leadership and Organization – The polls indicate that McCain is still within striking distance to win this election. What the polls do not show is the comprehensive ground game that the Obama campaign has designed and implemented. The Obama campaign has established offices and built an army of volunteers across America that is beyond the scope of previous national campaigns. One aspect of this effort was registering voters and it did so in record numbers. The other aspect is directed toward voter turnout. This weekend millions of registered Democrats will be visited by Obama volunteers. They will be reminded to vote, provided with information about voting locations and hours of operation and offered rides to the polls where needed. On Election Day these same registered Democrats will again be reminded to vote and a huge number of legal experts will be deployed around the country to protect against voter intimidation and vote stealing. The Democratic Party will be far better prepared this year to deal with Republican shenanigans than it was in 2000 and 2004.
* McCain ~ Change you don’t want to believe in – The McCain-Palin campaign did not invent racism and hate in America. Evidence of these ugly facets of human behavior can be seen throughout American history. However, one would think that a national political party seeking election to the highest office would go way out of its way to avoid any taint of such negativity and divisiveness. John McCain proves this premise incorrect. A survey of news outlets and blogs provides numerous examples of increasing expressions of hate and meanness, racism and homophobia - a result of the pandering McCain/Republican political campaign. I lay responsibility for these cancerous expressions at the feet of Senator McCain and Governor Palin. Regardless of the outcome of this election their candidacy was a big step backward for American principles, a regression stained with shame that will not disappear like political lawn signs on November 5th.
* The Bush Effect ~ Lest we forget – President Bush is still in office and still intent on his damaging policies and reign of error. A Washington Post article on Friday provides the details. “The White House is working to enact a wide array of federal regulations, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment, before President Bush leaves office in January.” If there was not such a damaging track record by the Bush administration I would have thought the article was a Halloween trick. It reminds one of an April 1st fool: lift constraints on power plants, mines and farms; clear obstacles to some commercial ocean-fishing activities; ease controls on emissions of pollutants that contribute to global warming; relax drinking-water standards; and lift a key restriction on mountaintop coal mining – a type of mining that damages the environment and has destroyed communities.
* Karl Marx meets Grouch Marx – Representative Steve King (R-IA) tells an audience in Sioux City that Obama is even more extreme than a Socialist. With Obama America will wind up with a totalitarian dictatorship. And, bless his little heart, he informs the audience that only Republicans have a legitimate claim to representing freedom as America knows it. From the Farm Belt – it’s Saturday Nigh Live. If one does not laugh at this crap one would cry.
* Let freedom ring – My efforts and my vote support Barack Obama. A number of Republican/conservative friends have told me they will vote for John McCain. I am disappointed in their decision but understand that all of our votes are valid. When the election is over we will move forward together. One cannot ask for more in a democratic society.
* “Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who don't vote.”
William E. Simon (1927 – 2000) 63rd U.S. Secretary of Treasury
An important note from Tricia Mueller, Obama for America NJ State Director.

These last few days are the most important days in the entire election. The past progress has been a foundation to help these final days to become the success we want it to be.
We are going to have to make some moves that are legal but that the McCain Campaign does not know about. I have noticed throughout the whole election, even in the primaries, that the competition uses the Obama's strategies back against the Obama team.
I strongly feel that we need a strong concentration in places like Michigan who can do voter registration and voting all at the same time up until the end of the election period.
I feel also that McCain is waiting to see what the Obama team does before he makes moves. I think he tries to campaign in places after Obama so that he is the last voice they hear that is why I feel we need the volunteers to push even harder once Obama leaves so that it is basically like he never left.
We also need to have enough voters in places like Michigan to vote on the 4th just to ensure we can push the numbers even further ahead of McCain. Again, from here on out I feel we need to operate in a manner that does not show McCain everything we are doing.
If we still have people who can travel to the detremental states between now and the fourth I think it would be well worth it to do so. Team Work
Sincerely,
Audrey Simmons, Disabled Veteran, Average Concerned Citizen

Debate September 26, 2008:
What I wish Barack Obama would have said at the debate or next time:
Obama: Some people say I was too tough on Senator John McCain at our first debate when I criticized him on what he said about talking to the leaders of Spain. I said he was totally out of touch with who our allies are and who is not. When pressed on this, McCain surrogates say he made a misstatement, he is a maverick, he is old and you have to give him a take back. I say: ‘do you get a take back when your finger is on the red button?’
You can’t win in Iraq because it is no longer a War, it is an Occupation costing us over $10 billion dollars a month. That is something that will bankrupt a country like it did the Russians in Afghanistan in 1989. John McCain says he wants to stay in Iraq another 100 years at this cost, and when pressed about it said make it a thousand years or ten thousand years.
President Bush declared victory in his “Mission Accomplished” flight onto an aircraft carrier, and we did win the war but failed in the peace because the President was out of touch with the conditions on the ground in Iraq. Just as Senator McCain is out of completely out of touch with his bellicose statements about staying in Iraq when the Iraqi government is asking us to leave.
It was disturbing to see John McCain say “Bomb, bomb, bomb---bomb Iran” to the beach Boys tune, and laughing about it. The question to the American people will be does he sing this song as President when his hand is on the red button. In case he doesn’t know it, what he says now as a candidate affects world affairs.
It was genuinely scary to see McCain talk about Russia and its Georgian incursion and nearly threaten them with war. He called this leadership and contrasted it with what the Obama campaign was saying; he even sent aides there ahead of what President Bush was doing and jeopardized our united diplomatic position. We have an occupation of Iraq, the war with Afghanistan, issues with Al Qaeda in Pakistan, John McCain’s commitment to bomb Iran---and he still wants to take on Russia. This is nothing short of insanity. It is the Republican idea that being in a state of perpetual war is good for the American economy and sending our young people to their deaths will get us out of the economy slump we are in now; just as “Drill Baby Drill” will get us out of the energy crisis. It is probably the best reasons not to elect a Republican this time.
Leadership is more than just running out in front of the troops and telling them: “to go over the top boys, for God and Country.” Sometimes it is talking through problems and understanding your opponent and their customs. Things that McCain has attacked me on. Leadership is not degrading your opponents because they are different. Teasing someone for being a Muslim or calling an oriental person a “gook” may be leadership to John McCain but it is not what I will do as President. McCain is a product of a different time in the world, when America had never lost a war and found itself in Vietnam winning all the battles and losing the occupation. Sometimes I think the way he approaches every challenge to American power across the world is to try again to win the Vietnam War. Victory in 1970’s Vietnam is through the Iran or Russia of today. It is insanity. Staying in Iraq forever is McCain’s maverick brand of leadership. It is insanity.
Some may call us Neville Chamberlin and Hitler appeasers---but these are false comparisons. We will be tough when necessary. But in no way will we be naïve or uninformed like the Bush Administration. We know what leadership is and what it is not. John McCain somehow doesn’t. He has a legendary temper that makes a tough leader but it also makes a stubborn leader like George W. Bush has been. Temper, arrogance and pride can keep you from thinking about what is right or saying you were wrong and correcting course like setting a reasoned timetable to get out of Iraq and to shift forces to Afghanistan. Having a surge into Afghanistan would be to George Bush and John McCain admitting that they were wrong, even if it is the necessary and best thing to do.
Veteran’s groups have taken John McCain to task for not supporting veteran’s benefits and for his bellicose talk in a time when the military is stretched to a breaking point. In fact, John McCain just led the fight against Senator Jim Webb’s G.I. Bill. Costs are being pushed to future generations and the American people were told that supporting the troops meant putting a yellow ribbon on your van and going to the mall to shop. If this is the leadership you want, then John McCain is your guy.
This election is just too important to hand it to John McCain as a reward for his military service to our country. We need to honor his service and his time as a POW but realize that service is not the end-all to leadership or the magic bullet of a maverick. The John McCain Story is a uniquely American one, but not the answer to the leadership woes of this country created by George W. Bush, a guy that McCain supported over 90% of the time, even when he was grossly wrong or just being stubborn and arrogant. If you want change and success then vote Obama-Biden. McCain is more of the same.
During the past 20 months millions have been inspired by Barack Obama’s message of change and have demonstrated their commitment to the campaign by volunteering. NJ Campaign for Change has been fortunate enough to have a number of extra special people who we call “Super Volunteers.” These individuals are powered by Barack Obama’s vision, probably lots of coffee, and desire to bring about real change in Washington. They are pushing themselves to do everything they can to help elect Obama as our next president. One of these Super Volunteers is Angie Stith from Willingboro. “Angie is the heart and soul of the office. Volunteers come for Obama and return repeatedly because Angie makes everyone feel valued and at home,” said Adam Goldfarb, regional field organizer for NJ Campaign for Change. “She always has a smile on her face and it’s contagious.”
Angie has volunteered everyday since February. She serves as the volunteer coordinator, and local grassroots captain, and has organized a number of successful campaign events. For Angie’s first Obama meetup event this summer, she drew over 80 people to her cookout in Mill Creek Park. She also helped to lead her team’s successful voter registration drives. Since July 4th, her team has registered thousands of new voters in Willingboro. When asked why she is so devoted to the campaign, Angie responds: “I have been waiting all my life to witness what is happening in this great country now. Obama represents what has been needed for so long. Obama is all-inclusive and he wants to bring everyone to the table. As a child, I was very much aware of the plight of poor people, especially people of color. Maybe now, for once and for all, we can live as one people coming together for a just and fair society. If there were eight days in a week, I probably would volunteer my time just as much. So, I pray my God continues to give me strength and guidance to push on until Obama becomes our next President of the United States.”Angie was first drawn to the political process earlier this year by Obama but since then has become completely immersed and will now be engaged in the long term. In June, Angie’s name was written in for the office of Democratic Committee Vice Chair, a non-paid elected position, and she won. “She’s the perfect mix of professionalism and enthusiasm,” explained Democratic Chairwoman Lavonne Bebler Johnson. “She’s a chairwoman’s dream.”
If you are interested in matching Angie’s enthusiasm to elect Obama, visit your local NJ Campaign for Change office and volunteer today.
When people ask me why I support Barack Obama, I always feel slightly tongue-tied. I lose a little bit of confidence even though I do have some clear beliefs why he should win office. However, they always end up sounding cliché. For instance, I usually think of the word ‘change’ but how many times have you heard that from an Obama supporter? It’s an abstract truth but not a concrete reason that holds weight with candidates like Hillary Clinton, whose political experience outweighs his or John McCain who has been in politics since I’ve been born. So with this in mind, I’ve been searching for better reasons why I support the Black man with the “funny name”.
Over the last few months, I have been immersed in Obama’s campaign. I’ve read both of his books, the autobiography Dreams from My Father and the more politically driven, The Audacity of Hope, which gives me a more personal and specific look into the man’s upbringing, beliefs and political views. I have also been reading some articles from various sources about his campaign and how he’s been stacking up against his relentless, unflinching opponent, Hillary Clinton. In the evenings, after I come home from work, I sometimes watch Youtube clips from his page, hoping to gain a firmer stance on my position on the issues. I’ve also, sometimes reluctantly, watch CNN, MSNBC and even FOX News (all thanks to my brother whose sudden interest in politics may be all due to Mr. Obama himself). I’ve even volunteered on his behalf, making donations, going to rallies, making a few calls to voters, sending out postcards and agreeing to a random interview with a university as a young supporter.
Now, I will say that prior to this election, I was not into politics that much at all. I’ve never been to a rally for a candidate nor read a political book in my life. I was even a Hillary supporter at first, thinking that Obama really didn’t have a chance at winning the presidency. So I wonder, “What is it about him that makes me believe so much? Why do I feel so driven to be involved and to learn as much as I can about the issues and the candidate himself?”
I’m still in search for that answer. I’ve had some discoveries over the last few months that I will share with you and I know I will have quite a few more during the general election. In consequence, I will share my journey with you on this quest to find out the answer to this very question. I will call it, for now, “The Exploration of Hope”. Cheesy maybe but I kinda like it.

Today, Joe Biden’s sister Valerie Biden Owens and her daughter Missy Owens hosted a rally for Change at Rider University to energize volunteers for the campaign’s final push. Valerie shared stories about how she, Joe and their three other siblings were raised in Scranton, Pennsylvanian in a middle-class, Irish Catholic family. Their mom Jean stayed at home to raise them while their dad Joseph Sr. worked at a car dealership. “Joe and I are people who know in our bones what the struggles of the middle-class feel like,” Valerie Biden Owens explained. “We define middle class as: If you miss more than two paychecks in a row, you’re in trouble. We’ve been there.” Valerie further explained how Joe understood the need for the government to support average American families in light of the rising costs of health care and education. Joe is a champion on the issue of making college more affordable by using the tax code to reduce costs.
“What Valerie Biden Owens said at today’s rally really resonated with me, especially when she talked about bolstering our education system. I’m a freshman at Rider University but after I graduate, I want to be a teacher,” said Pam Rotter from Newtown, Pennsylvania. “As a student and a future teacher, I know how a good education can shape a person’s life.” Joe has a proven record of bringing people together to get things done. From global warming to combating violence against women to confronting the challenges of the dangerous world in which we live, Joe Biden has fought every day over the course of his life in public service to improve the lives of middle class families. If you are a student and would like to help elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden, join Generation Obama. It's a locally-based but nationally coordinated grassroots movement led by young activists. As a member of your local Generation Obama chapter, you and other members can utilize the many talents of our country’s next great generation in support of the campaign in a variety of meaningful ways.
After going up and down the state for three days to cover Countdown to Change, I’ve found that there is a recurring theme in why volunteers have decided to become part of Barack Obama’s grassroots movement: they passionately believe in Senator Obama and feel that he is the only man who can bring about the change we need for our country.“We can’t take this election for granted. That’s why I came in today to work on a holiday,” said Tony Dias, from West New York. “This is the most important election in my lifetime. We need to help Senator Obama to make this a win.”
Peter Gatto prepares to canvass Kearny.“I am here today to fight for this election and make sure that we don’t have another Republican in the White House. President Bush and the current administration have a total disregard for the Constitution. Senator McCain is more of the same. He even faltered and voted with President Bush on the torture issue.” said Peter Gatto from Hoboken. “I also feel it’s important to reestablish America’s standing in the world. I travel a great deal and I’m saddened to see that our reputation has diminished greatly in the last eight years. We can’t afford to keep this up.”To read about Senator Obama’s position on foreign policy related issues click here.Tomorrow is the last day to register to vote in New Jersey. Visit www.VoteforChange.com to request to vote absentee or to register to vote.
Day two of Countdown to Change started off with donuts and coffee and a lot of enthusiasm. The Carpenters Hall in Hackensack was filled with about 50 volunteers ready to walk the streets of Bergen County.
Volunteers line up to receive their walk packets.
“I volunteered today because of my sense of responsibility and obligation. I’ve never been moved enough to get involved in a presidential campaign other than vote. This election is different. Obama and what he stands for moves me,” said Phyllis Sneyers from Waldwick. “I owe it to my children and grandchildren to play a part in this election. The decision we make this November will directly impact their quality of life.”
Mother daughter team Phyllis Sneyers and Dana Lustig return to the Hackensack campaign office after their canvass and pose for a photo with their Obama sign. "I’ve never followed an election as mush as I do now. I believe in Obama’s potential and commitment and what he can do for us,” said Dana Lustig from Oakland. “I’m a six year breast cancer survivor. I have a lot at stake. I need a healthcare system that works for me and is secure. I reach out to women all the time who are diagnosed and they find out that they don’t have the right kind of coverage or coverage at all. I have faith in Obama’s plan to provide quality health care for Americans.” Read about Obama’s plan on how to make health insurance work for people and businesses – not just insurance and drug companies. Tomorrow marks the last day of Countdown to Change so you still have one more day to be featured on our NJ blog! Sign up now to participate in tomorrow’s activities.
I have been out rapping on and rapping at doors for Senator Obama these past couple of weekends, and it's been great.
No, not everyone I meet is a supporter, and not everyone is welcoming. The percentages are about what you would expect in each case. Most people are very pleasant, and it's great to talk with people on both sides and find out what's important to them. For the most part I'm getting a really good response, lots of support for Senator Obama, and I find a couple more people willing to volunteer each time I go out.
One good one from last week.... Husband comes to the door and says "I'm voting for McCain, but I think my wife may be considering Obama." Wife comes to the door, and we all talk for a few minutes, me, my wife Marcy, and Mr. and Mrs. Voter. He brought up some of the easy-to-dispell right wing radio junk, and Marcy and I dispelled it. By the time we left she was still "leaning Obama" and he had moved from "strong McCain" to "undecided." So there's still hope for their marriage!
After today's walk I came home, had dinner, and sat down to watch the Penn State game. I guess I had a good day, because I fell asleep at halftime, didn't wake up until I heard the re-run of Saturday Night Live. So naturally, I'm up late blogging about it.
Keep on walkin' and callin' and maybe we'll all get our Gs back, dog gonnit!
This has really gotten very ugly, very quickly. It was reported on McClatchy Report that a new 30-second McCain Campaign TV ad attacks Barack Obama's record on education, saying that Obama backed legislation to teach "'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners." The announcer then says, "Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."
Fact of the matter is the legislation voted on by Obama and others in the Illinois Senate allowed local school boards to teach "age-appropriate" sex education. There was not “comprehensive sex education” lessons to kindergartners, but rather it gave schools the ability to warn young children about inappropriate touching and sexual predators.
Obama voted for a sexual education class that taught young, pre-adolescents what was, and how to avoid adult molestation by pedophiles.
