"If we act boldly, then our economy will be less vulnerable to economic disruption, our trade balance will improve, the pace of U.S. technological innovation will accelerate, and the American worker will be in a stronger position to adapt to the global economy," states Barack Obama, the Democratic U.S. Senator of Illinois and now the Democratic nominee for President, in his (new) book "The Audacity of Hope". Senator Obama lays out a vision for reclaiming the American Dream aided by a government built on our best traditions, representing our everyday lives, uniting our common hopes and dreams, and creating an unbreakable bond.
Senator Obama was (has recently been) picked to represent the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, along with the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee. He says keeping the American people safe should always be our top priority. He will also work for the Foreign Relations committee, and the Veterans' Affairs committee. Working simultaneously in four different committees is an honor, a measure of respect, and a remarkable feat for any U.S. Senator. (He was also on the cover of Time Magazine hinting of a run for the presidency in 2008.)Three Innovation OpportunitiesSenator Obama is not only focused on promoting economic growth and bringing good paying jobs to Illinois, but also creating substantial innovative opportunities in education, science and technology, and energy for America. In his book, he talks about how "investments in all these three key areas (education, science and technology, and energy) would go a long way in making America more competitive." He agrees that none of these investments will produce immediate results; these investments will actually cost money and resources in the near term. However, he believes that such investments in R & D and education, increasing fuel efficiency of American cars (e.g. Tesla, Toyota, Honda, Ford, and future electric cars by GM), instituting performance pay for public-school teachers, understanding the feasibility of school vouchers and evaluating the viability of hydrogen fuel cells are necessary."But while the means we use to accomplish these ends should be subject to vigorous and open debate, the ends themselves shouldn't be in dispute," states Senator Obama in a prose reminiscent of President Abraham Lincoln. He emphasizes that "like those before us, we should be asking ourselves what mix of policies will lead to a dynamic free market and widespread economic security, entrepreneurial innovation and upwards mobility." He even asks us to be guided by President Lincoln's simple maxim: "that we will do collectively, through our government, only those things that we cannot do well or at all individually and privately."GlobalizationWhereas Senator Obama observes that globalization has brought significant benefits to American consumers such as lowered prices on goods including big-screen TVs and winter fruits, increased the purchasing power, kept inflation in check, boosted stock returns, created new markets for U.S. companies overseas, and even reduced poverty in foreign countries; however, globalization has also increased economic instability for millions of ordinary Americans as more U.S. companies have automated, downsized, outsourced, and offshored. Obama believes the effects of globalization create a so-called "winner-take-all" economy where a rising tide doesn't lift all the boats. Knowledge workers such as engineers, lawyers, consultants, doctors, marketers are doing well now; however, blue-collared workers whose skills can be automated, digitized, outsourced or offshored for less are clearly hurting.Senator Obama asserts that "our greatest asset has been our system of social organization, a system that for generations has encouraged constant innovation, individual initiative, and the efficient allocation of resources." The classic paradox is whether we should consider our free-market system as a given and let it ride naturally - "laissez-faire", or whether our government should take action to open up opportunity, encourage competition, and make the market work better. In the past government has been called upon to build the infrastructure, train the workforce, and lay foundations necessary for economic growth. For President Lincoln, the essence of America was opportunity, the ability of "free labor" to advance in life.Government InnovationsSenator Obama provides several examples on how our government has provided individuals the tools to adapt and innovate in a climate of constant technological change. From the GI Bill that made college education available to millions, to the creation of public schools, universities and institutions of higher education, formation of National Academy of Sciences, Homestead Act, Hoover Dam, interstate highway system, Tennessee Valley Authority, Darpa, Internet, Human Genome Project, Federal Reserve Bank, Food and Drug Act, Meat Inspection Act, FDR's New Deal, Securities and Exchange Commission, FDIC insurance, tax cuts, Social Security, forty-hour workweek, child labor laws, minimum wage act, National Labor Relations Act, and the Great Society programs including Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, EPA and Occupational Health and Safety Administration -- countless innovations through out the history led by our great leaders.Senator Obama makes a fundamental point that "capitalism is not standing still." The unavoidable globalization, competition, and technological revolution stifle our economy and frustrate our people. He makes a strong case for investments that can make America more competitive in the global economy: investments in education, science and technology, and energy independence. He provides examples of schools in Chicago where students only get a few hours of school each day: the number one issue being the school district cannot afford to pay the teachers for one whole day. He talks about workers who have lost their jobs because companies want more profits or can't compete. He discusses the rising gas prices and our dependence on oil to the tune of $800 million dollars every day.Education InnovationsIt is evident that Senator Obama deeply cares about education. He emphasizes innovation and bold reforms in education. He recommends that we should "identify those reforms that have the highest impact on student achievement, fund them adequately, and eliminate those programs that don't produce results." He provides some examples of education reform and suggests that we have many good ideas, but we don't do a great job of executing on them. For instance, challenging and rigorous curriculum with emphasis on math, science and literacy skills; longer hours and more days to give children the time and sustained attention they need to learn; early childhood education for every child, so they're not already behind on their first day of school; meaningful, performance-based assessments that can provide a fuller picture of how a student is doing; and the recruitment and training of transformative principals and more effective teachers. He believes that teachers should be held accountable, and at the same time rewarded for their effectiveness -- even salaries of $100,000 a year based on experience, performance and qualification. Obama also emphasizes need for higher education reform, especially for science, engineering and technology, and management of rising cost of public college tuition that has risen 40 percent over the last five years. Finally, direct help in meeting college expenses in the form of grants, low-interest loans, tax-free educational savings accounts, or full tax deductibility of tuition and fees.Science And Technology InnovationsSenator Obama has a concrete plan for maintaining our scientific and technological edge that will spearhead future innovations: the plan will cost $42 billion over five years. He recommends that "if we want an innovation economy, one that generates more Googles each year, then we have to invest in our future innovators -- by doubling federal funding of basic research over the next five years, training one hundred thousand more engineers and scientists over the next four years, or providing new research grants to the most outstanding early-career researchers in the country." He believes this is necessary to maintain America's competitive edge. He refers to the Morrill Act signed by President Lincoln that created the system of land grant colleges, institutions of higher learning, and nation's primary research and development laboratories. He asserts that these institutions have inspired and created nation's innovators, and applied research from such institutions has resulted in commercial applications.Energy InnovationsFinally, Senator Obama calls for energy independence. He believes that if we are to become more competitive, we have to build an energy infrastructure. U.S. demand for oil will jump 40 percent over the next twenty years; further our dependence on foreign oil only serves the interests of volatile regimes. Oil erodes the environment. When U.S. has only 3 percent of the world's oil reserves, and uses 25 percent of the world's oil, alternatives must be sought: create renewable, cleaner energy sources for the twenty-first century. He proposes that "we should end every single tax break the industry currently receives and demand that 1 percent of the revenues from oil companies with over $1 billion in quarterly profits go toward financing alternative energy research and the necessary infrastructure." Obama touts Brazil as a good example where a mix of regulation and direct government investment has developed a highly efficient biofuel industry and 70 percent of new vehicles run on sugar-based ethanol instead of gasoline. Obama believes that regulation when applied with flexibility and sensitivity to market forces can actually spur private sector innovation and investment in the energy sector. Fuel-efficient cars and alternative fuels are the future of the auto industry. Obama proposed legislation called "Health Care for Hybrids" that makes a deal with U.S. automakers: "In exchange for federal assistance in meeting the health-care costs of retired autoworkers, the Big Three would reinvest these savings into developing more fuel-efficient vehicles." Obama thinks that investments in alternative fuel sources will lead to creation of thousands of new jobs.Uncommon InsightsSenator Obama shares with us insights from Robert Rubin, the former U.S. Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton, and Warren Buffet. Rubin suggests that "there's no limit to human ingenuity." The insight gained from Rubin is that we can slow globalization, but can't stop it. For instance, when one buys an American good, it could be developed by overseas software programmers and packaged outside our borders. Billionaire Buffet shares an uncommon insight that he will be paying a lower effective tax rate than his receptionist. Not only that, he is paying a lower rate of tax than the average American. Buffet believes that "some of that wealth (rich people) has to be plowed back into education, so that the next generation has a fair chance, and to maintain our infrastructure, and provide some sort of safety net for those who lose out in a market economy." What Buffet is essentially reverberating is a "change in spirit, a willingness to put our common interests and the interests of future generations ahead of short-term expediency."Bottomline:Senator Barack Obama is a visionary, a real leader, an innovator who can bridge the nation whole, analytical yet convincing, grounded in history and tradition, and progressive in his prescription for change. He is a creative innovator who believes in a proactive government creating an environment that facilitates reforms in education, science and technology, and energy. He believes that strategic investments in these three key areas will empower America to create a stronger economy that will create countless new opportunities for innovators and workers alike. Ever since June, dedicated volunteers have been hitting the doors and the phones on behalf of Barack in the general election. Through events like Unite for Change parties, and Women to Women meetings, former Hillary supporters have smoothly transitioned to become an integral part of our effort, and they bring a drive and dedication to changing this country that is truly admirable.
Some have even stepped up to become leaders. An organizer describes one such amazing woman, Robin, in Toledo:
Robin was a huge supporter of Senator Clinton in the primaries, travelling to four states, working, in her words, "thousands of hours," to make the change we need in this country. After the primaries ended, Robin was disappointed, but knew that she needed to help Barack...Over the last several weeks, Robin has held a Unite for Change House Meeting where Hillary supporters got a chance to clear the air and move forward. She has made hundreds of calls to Hillary supporters from the primary, and my friends, I have never seen so many undecideds turn into supporters in my life. Robin is essentially single-handedly unifying her area of Toledo. Several days ago Robin got 5 Hillary supporters from the primary to come to the office, she trained them on Unity calls (as she calls them), and had a three hour Unite for Change phone bank.Robin...has been an inspiration to me, by helping ensure that Democrats will be united to make history in November. And thank goodness the primaries are over, so I get to work with the wonderful Hillary supporters like Robin.

LOCAL YOUNG LEADER READIES FOR HISTORIC INAUGURATIONPresidential Youth Inaugural Conference Inspires Tomorrow's Leaders
WASHINGTON, D.C. - In January 2009, outstanding high school students from across the United States will take part in a truly American Celebration - the Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States. During the five-day program, the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference (PYIC) will provide scholars with a deeper understanding of the history behind the electoral process and the rich traditions surrounding the presidential inauguration.
"The Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference will provide students with an opportunity to take part in historic events that coincide with the Inauguration of the President of the United States," said Mike Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the organization that sponsors PYIC. "Something that is really wonderful about so many young people gathering in Washington, D.C. for this event is that it will provide them a chance to become more familiar with and attuned to the president who will govern our country over the next four years. We certainly hope this will inspire the next generation of U.S. leaders."
Inaugural Scholars will have the opportunity to interact with a major presidential candidate, White House officials, congressional staff members, political experts and other VIPs, such as Lance Armstrong. After witnessing the inauguration, scholars will experience the grandeur of the inaugural parade, as the president, vice president and their families make their way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol Building to the White House. To further honor and celebrate Inauguration Day, scholars will attend a Black Tie Gala Inaugural Ball.
In addition to participating in inaugural events and festivities, scholars will have the opportunity to explore the numerous historic sites and monuments in our nation's capital, as well as participate in roundtable discussions, debates, and other activities that will help to expand their knowledge of democratic principles and presidential election process.
CYLC is a nonpartisan, independent, educational organization. Since 1985, the Council has inspired more than 200,000 young people to achieve their full leadership potential. Members of the U.S. Congress have joined our commitment by serving on the CYLC honorary Congressional Board of Advisors. In addition, more than 50 embassies participate in the Council's Honorary Board of Embassies.

Dear Friends,
Right now, Fox News is trying to paint Barack Obama as foreign, un-American, suspicious, and scary. They're trying to send Americans the message that our country's first viable Black candidate for President is not "one of us."
I've joined on to ColorOfChange.org's campaign to push back on Fox, publicly demanding they stop their race-baiting and fear mongering. If that doesn't work, then the next step is their advertisers and the FCC. I wanted to invite you to sign on as well. It takes only a moment:
http://www.colorofchange.org/foxobama/
Here are some recent deplorable instances:
After Senator Obama won the nomination, he and his wife gave each other a "pound" in front of the cameras. Fox anchor E.D. Hill called the act of celebration a "terrorist fist jab." Then last week, a Fox News on-screen graphic referred to Michelle Obama as "Obama's baby mama"--slang used to describe the unmarried mother of a man's child. It was a clear attempt to associate the Obamas with negative cultural stereotypes about Black people, an insult not only to Michelle Obama but to women and Black people everywhere.
After each of the incidents mentioned, Fox issued some form of weak apology. But what does it mean when you slap someone in the face, apologize the next day, then slap them again on the third? It means the apology is meaningless.
These aren't one-time incidents--they're part of a pattern that continues no matter how often Fox is forced to apologize. Fox has a clear record of attacking and undermining Black institutions, Black leaders, and Black people in general.
If we don't push back now, we will see more of the same from now until November. Please join me in helping to bring an end to Fox's behavior.
Thanks.
Robin
You know what I’m tired of?I’m tired of fake, black leadership. Leadership that won’t show up but never wastes an opportunity to show out. That won’t stand up for others, but will always stand up for itself. The type of leadership that is so self-centered that it won’t hesitate to tear down the leadership of another. Moreover, I’m tired of Black Christians praising Black Muslims. I’m tired of us heralding people like Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan as great Black leaders. Don’t we realize that they are the false teachers that Jesus warned us about? Don’t we realize that these people aren’t about hope and love, but about hate and despair? They tell you that this country can’t change. They tell you it won’t change. So they encourage you to do for yourself. But the Bible encourages us to do for others. To love our enemies. To do good to those who harm us. To bless those who curse us. Why do we praise this other type of leadership?I’m tired of leaders like Tavis Smiley, who let their own egoism get in the way of true black leadership. Who think they themselves are the only way to the Black community. That in order to get to us, you have to go through them.I’m tired of sell outs like Condeleeza Rice and Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell and Michael Steele. I’m tired of pretending to be proud, when inside, I’m ashamed. I’m tired of fakes like Rev. Jesse Jackson, who haven’t said a word about Jesus publicly in over 40 years. Who think that because they were a confidante of Dr. King that automatically qualifies them to be leaders in the Black community.I’m tired of Black preachers who scream at me from the pulpit. Who won't preach love and hope, but spew hatred. Those who steal from their congregants and preach that the only way to Heaven is to be rich. But overall, you know what I’m really tired of?I’m really tired of nonexistent black leaders. The type that won’t show up or show out. Who stay silent when an issue affects our community. The type that can create a song about the NBA playoffs in a day, but takes a month to speak out against injustice. I’m tired of rappers who claim to rep their hoods to the fullest, but won’t give back to their hoods to the fullest. The type that can promote sex, drugs, and violence all day, but only promote education once a year. The type that can endorse a product, but won’t endorse a Presidential candidate. In the 40 years since Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, we have lacked real black leadership. Leadership that stands in the face of adversity. Leadership that’s not afraid to take on tough issues. Leadership that tells the truth, despite the lies. Leadership that is open, honest, and forthright with the people. Leadership that understands its power to enact change. For so long, we’ve been waiting for a person who could speak to the rest of America about our plight. To explain to them what we’ve been through, where we came from, and where we want to go. For 40 years, we’ve lacked that leadership. But it took a little mixed, half-black, half-white boy from Hawaii to finally bring true Black leadership to the people. And that is why I support Barack Obama. Because he is the epitome of real, black leadership. Because without having met him, he has motivated and inspired me to get involved. To care. To move. To love. To hope. To dream. It is that ability that will push us forward, and restore the sense of pride and integrity that we, as a people, once had in ourselves, in our nation, and in our black leadership. God bless,J.W.

Dear Citizens:
I am posting some theoretical ideas that I have been gathering for about ten years. Take some time and ponder them (if interested). All conversations henceforth will ASSUME that "homework" has been done. Please don't argue irrelevant ambiguities. Be present.
If you're new to educated behavior discussions, please remain quiet until you catch on. Thank you in advance. If you're behavior educated by observing animals, you do not have the background for this discussion. Someone who has birthed and raised a healthy child knows more about healthy behavior.
By the way, I will also post my resume and a discussion of Health Sciences Master's Degree programs. I am looking for my peers.
First posting...

PS I would sincerely like to speak to Senator Obama if anyone can connect me....
Yes Sir Barack Obama will not have the & is devoid of "been there there, done that", which Hillary Clinton has. But young new leaders are energized, rarely see challenges as impossible and embrace change with gusto.
WOW that is what America has seen in the past from Bank of America to apple MAC.
But the drawbacks are they don't know, nor are skilled to estimate the level of risks.
These leaders should take certain acceptable risks compared to going full On or Too defense. They should fight the urge to surround & settle with people who are wellknown friends or with people who make them safe. That is not at all good, fight that urge, seek people who are better, smarter and maybe more talented than you, everything else will follow.
A Black Man Why is it that a Black Man can create a tiny piece called a filament (electric light - Lewis Latimer) That allows people to see in the dark? But can't be seen fit to lead a country to the true light. Why is it that a Black Man can create an instrument (clock - Benjamin Banneker) that all People use to tell time? But people don't think it is time for him to run a country. Why is it that a Black Man can design a place for the high authorities to meet in & a place for the President to live in (The Capital & the White House Phillip Reid (a slave) & Pierre L'Enfant)? But not good enough to lead these meetings or live in himself. Why is it that a Black Man was brilliant enough to do the first open heart surgery (Dr. Daniel Hale Williams) And show the world how to get and preserve plasma (Dr. Charles Drew)? But not good enough to put a program in place where everyone can afford this surgery. Why is it that a Black Man was creative enough to design an instrument (traffic light - Garrett Morgan) To bring multiple people (traffic) to a halt? But not seen creative enough to design a plan to bring all this unnecessary and worthless Fighting between countries to an end. Why is it that a Black Man could create the soles (shoes - Jan Matzeliger)that people Walk on everyday? But not seen good enough to fill the shoes of a bad president. Why is it that a Black Man was smart enough & brave enough to teach himself ( Fredrick Douglas & Thomas Fuller - both slaves) and others how to read, write and/or calculate math? But not seen (as) smart enough and bold enough to calculate a platform to be President to a countryThat sure needs another first by us. So you see my Brothers and Sisters what I am saying is let us not forget our past, Which led us to our present and can definitely be the backbone to our future. We were good enough, smart enough, creative enough, and bold enough then, so Lets all give Obama the chance to show w that we are still these things and more. We all are as strong as our weakest link, so don't be that weak link that denies Our people that chance to show we still can OVERCOME & BE THE FIRST
Yes we have! And "Yes we can" do so again!
I FIND IT REFRESHING THAT OBAMA IS NOT AS EXPERIENCED IN POLITICAL (ABANDON YOUR PRINCIPLES) VOMIT AS HILARY IS.
WE DON'T NEED THAT GARBAGE ANYWAYS. WHAT WE NEED IS SOMEONE WHOSE PRINCIPLES ARE AS SOLID AS AN ICEBERG (STEVEN COVEY "7 HABITS...").
WHO IS STILL CLOSE TO THE PEOPLE, AND THE PROBLEMS THAT WE HAVE. REAL PEOPLE WITH REAL PROBLEMS.
HONESTY IS NOT ALWAYS EASY. BUT IT IS BEST. YOU AND I WILL LIVE THIS LIFE WITH THE FACT THAT ALL OUR ACTIONS WILL HAVE REACTIONS. OUR ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENSES.
SHOULDN'T OUR LEADERS BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE ALSO. OTHERWISE THEY WILL START TO LIE AND CHEAT AND WORK THEIR POWER IN THEIR OWN FAVOR BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER TO ANYONE OR BE PUNISHED FOR THE WRONGS THEY MADE AGAINST US....
OH WAIT...IT'S ALREADY HAPPENING.
COME ON OBAMA. HELP US FIND OUR WAY BACK TO TRUTH.
Populism is not socialism
Energy independent
Charismatic leaders cannot be ignored
What is the driving mission, vision, philosophy, whatever, of the United States of America? We look to our Constitution for the how-to’s; we look to our leaders for the why-for’s. The national media continues to look to our candidates for office for specific logistical solutions to problems. They continue to look at how-to’s. I think we should be looking at the why-for’s.
Barack Obama inspires the why-for mentality. Obama talks about hope. Obama talks about the celebration of life. Obama honors strength and courage. Obama promotes a common purpose. Obama inspires unity and inclusiveness - both at home and abroad.
Obama represents a shift in fundamental paradigms. The Bush administration promotes a win/lose philosophy - “You are either with us or against us.” Obama’s message is inclusive, implying ‘how can all people win.’
I like that.
It is the collective consciousness of our country that has paved an open space for someone like Barack Obama to run for President. From a sociological perspective, it is the consensual knowledge of the community that has agreed upon the need for a new type of leadership. Why did the civil rights emerge? What gave Martin Luther King Jr. the power to invoke change? The people. We the people are ready for a new level of awareness and action in politics.
Society has been molded by our values, beliefs, and morals, and all of those have been influenced by laws, religion, and economics. What we value (make important) we then act upon accordingly. Society is ruled by the invisible glue that holds it together. Our actions and behavoirs are interdependent and our structures and infrastructures are the results of the conditions that are present in the system.
In the laws of physics, we find that energy does not cease; it only changes. We are destined for change. Is it going to be positive or negative? The equilibirium we crave is the physical, bilogical and psychological nature of our species. Positive and negative eletrons balance themselves. When there is an imbalance, the system becomes "ill." Society and politics must have an even exchange of positive and negative elements to be able to create the sufficient static friction that will then create the balanced entity.
There is a man by the name of Alexis de Tocqueville; he was an early 19th century social thinker. Tocqueville spent a majority of his time analyzing equality and mass society. "We must understand what is wanted of society and its government." Tocqueville said. In other words, the point I am trying make is that we the people create change, give rise to revolutions, and then generate the elevations in social consciousness. The leaders are the ones who are willing to stand in front of the people and persuade and encourage the unity, and continuity of the collective's primary purpose. Barack Obama is this leader type.
Obama represents two types of an evolutionary change that American consciousness is ready for. The first is an External Representation. The truth of the matter is 150 years ago, we abolished slavery. 53 years ago, the Civil Rights Act made it possible for Blacks to vote and be a part of the political process. And today we have a black man standing up as a leader for all races, and people; a modern day Martin Luther King type, if you will. This is a prime example of the external evoltionary change of social and political consciousness that American society is ready for.
The second type of evolutionary change is an Internal Representation. This consists of the principals and messages that Barack Obama represents. His clear message of unity and his visions of equality, and his desire to not just implement political strategies for change, but his intent to reshape the entire relationship between politicians and their constiuents. It is we the people who have helped to create Obama, and it is also we the people who have prepared and produced the conditions to allow a new type of politician, like Obama to emerge.
We are all leaders in a sense. Our individual experiences contributes to the shaping, molding and re-defining of our collective expereinces. Society and particularly, society in America has already elected a new paradigm. And with that said, we could even take it further to say, we HAVE ALREADY ELECTED BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT. For every physical manifestation, there is first a spiritual incubation. The word "Spirtual" used in this context means the "invisible," elements that create the mass. Many particles create solidity. The microcosm ultimately becomes the macrocosm. The conditions are just right for Obama to be elected President of the United States. You can bet on that. Hence, The American Makeover has occured.
