Health Care in Doubt

The future of affordable, single payer health care is in serious jeopardy. Senator Max Baucus of Montana wants to become the "pacesetter" for Health Care Reform. This is the same Senator who refused to let ANY voices be heard along the lines of Single Payer health care, threatened to have doctors, nurses and other professionals arrested if they dared intrude on his pre-determined hearings with Big Pharma, Insurance giants and other Big Money interests. READY TO CHANGE OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN AMERICA

On June 27th we will be supporting OFA's National Health Care Day of Service by hosting an educational healthcare community event. Please visit FIND EVENTS for June 27th events or in the zip code of 33004. This event stems from this past Saturday's National Kick-Off of Health Care Reforum events to begin the Grassroots movements and to pull the communities together to take action. It was a great turn-out and I hope to see this group grow.

Health Care Reform -- Rallying at the Ritz

I was excited when President Obama said last week that the "status quo" would not be part of his health care reform plan. This morning I rallied with organizers from Health Care for America and other citizen activists to send a message to America's Health Insurance Plan (AHIP) executives that we do not trust them to come up with a health care reform plan that serves the interests of the American people. The fact that AHIP was meeting at The Ritz Carlton in Washington, DC is an indication of how insurers profit while people struggle with health insurance practices. These high-earning CEOs and lobbyists have turned health care into a game of "Mother, may I." It doesn't matter if you are a user of the system or if you are a health care provider, the insurance industry is a headache at best and a nightmare at worst. Every time I've changed employment and health care plans I've also had to switch from physicians with whom I've built trusted relationships and hunt for a new doctor. In addition, every switch means transferring years of records from one provider to another, including transporting bulky x-rays to a different clinic. I'm beginning to think that I am my own pro bono medical records administrator. So I'm not expecting AHIP to come out with a health care reform plan that works for people like me. What I expect is the same kind of fear campaign they waged in the 1990s. This time, I hope the American people will see through AHIP scare tactics and advocate directly for access to quality, affordable health care for all.

Principles of Health Care Reform: #2

As an organizer for SEIU's Change that Works Campaign, I am working on building a network of community members who will engage Grand Forks in a conversation about Health Care Reform. I'm interested in hearing your take on one of the principles essential to successful Health Care Reform:

#2: Health Care for All Americans

The message is simple: For our medical security, an investment in providing Health Care for All Americans is wise and an essential component of health care reform. We can avoid paying the medical bills for catastrophic visits to the emergency by un-insured if we provide access to immediate preventative or early intervention through regular access to affordable health care. This is the economic and epidemiological argument for Health Care for All Americans. Some prefer the moral imperative.

Why do you think all Americans should be covered by Health Insurance?

Or do you disagree that we will all be better off, if all Americans have access to health care? I look forward to hearing from you.

The Need for Change in Health Care

My fellow North Dakotans,

I've completed my training to be an organizer for the Change that Works Campaign and am starting my new job on Monday. I will be working to promote an agenda for a Uniquely American Solution to the Health Care Crisis. In order that I may understand even more deeply how this system. I personally have been without health insurance for half of the past six years, and know how disconcerting that can be, but I want to hear about what other people are experiencing. If you would like to learn more about how you can get involved in making sure our delegation hears how important Health Care Reform is to you, please contact me.

I've accepted a job as an organizer for the SEIU in Grand Forks, ND.

I am very excited about returning to Grand Forks, ND to work for health care for all and advocating for the employee free choice Act. I hope you will join me in this effort to ensure workers will have the right to collaborate. People working together to improve their own living and working situation -- we must ensure that right is protected.
