Ashland and Richland counties certainly aren't the first places you think of when you consider where a progressive candidate, who strongly advocates for women's rights, would have support, as both have voted heavily red in the past. But on a beautiful Sunday in north central Ohio, some truly empowered women gathered in two meetings in adjacent counties to talk about women's issues, commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention, and collectively devote their time and energy towards the candidacy of Barack.
Both forums were marked by their intimacy--by the opportunity for women to speak honestly about how they feel about the issues at hand, the election, and what they think they must do to move forward in the name of women.
In the picture from Ashland above, Louise, second from left, listens to Nikki talk, along with her daughter (next to her), Sandy (on the left), and Mary (second from right). Louise shared the story about how she wasn't very involved in the primary, but her son's enthusiasm for Barack drew her in for the general election.
Here, Kelly talks while Jean listens. Like a few of the women in attendance at these meetings, Jean was a Hillary-turned-Barack supporter. She spoke about how, being a butcher, in what is thought of as a "man's profession," she had to work hard to get equal pay as her male counterparts.
One town over, in Mansfield, in a spacious office, Field Director Jackie kicked off the meeting by telling her personal story and what this election means to her as a woman. Like in Ashland, those present watched a video, shared their own stories, and asked questions about what they could do to help the campaign.
Among those in attendance were Barbara and Emily, whose families' joint political involvement goes back generations. Barbara also was for Hillary in the primary, but has already started to canvas for Barack. Similarly, Carol, second from the far end, was initially resistant to doing voter contact, but has now become one of the staples of the volunteer effort in the area. Local Field Organizer Katie told about how Carol held a house party a couple weeks ago, and since then every single person who attended her meeting has come in to canvas for Barack. Talk about a success ratio!

Want to attend an Obama house party in Oregon? More than 70 house parties are scheduled for this Saturday, May 10, across Oregon. Find one at http://or.barackobama.com/ORhouseparty
The excitement for Senator Obama is building in Oregon. April saw 82 Obama house parties across the state, from Ashland to Astoria, La Grande to Lake Oswego. These parties welcomed 1500 guests, raised more than $16,000, and recruited 265 volunteers. The parade of parties continues in May.
As of today, almost 80 people have signed up to host “Vote for Change” house party on Saturday, April 10. There’s still time to host your own party. Just sign up at http://or.barackobama.com/ORhousepartyhost.
Once you’ve registered your party, we’ll send you a kit with instructions, lapel stickers, a DVD and contribution forms.
And what should you do after that? Below is a list of six tips for “Vote for Change” hosts prepared by David Sweet of the Oregon for Obama house party team.
Six Tips for “Vote for Change” May 10 House Party Hosts
1) Invitations: This week is a great time to follow up your email and online invitations with phone calls. Let your friends and neighbors know that you really would like them to come.
2) Speakers: Our speakers bureau is working hard to find speakers for as many of your house parties as we can cover. We won’t know until May 8th or 9th who is assigned where. We’ll pass that information on to you as soon as we can. If you would like a speaker, and have not requested one, please contact Kim Upham, who runs the speakers bureau, at OskiFan@mac.com
3) Conference call for party hosts: We will have a conference call for house party hosts on Wednesday, May 7, at 7:00 pm. This will be an opportunity to hear from Oregon and national campaign officials, and to get any remaining questions answered about your house party. If you haven’t received the phone number to participate in this conference, contact David Sweet at oregonhouseparty@gmail.com.
4) Online donations: If your house party guests donate online, you do not have to bother with checks and donation forms. You can set up your personal fundraising page at http://my.barackobama.com. Your guests can contribute there before or during your party, and people who are unable to attend can also help you meet your party’s fundraising goal.
5) Ballot collection: Ballots will be mailed out on May 2nd, and must be received by May 20th. Early voting is very helpful to the campaign, and the May 10 “Vote for Change” house party offers the opportunity to collect many early ballots. Campaign “runners” will stop at each party to pick up ballots. They will be wearing campaign “Field Organizer” ID cards, and will secure ballots in a Ballot Collection Envelope.
6) Sample house party agenda: Many hosts have asked what happens at a house party. There are many ways they can be organized. The following is one example of a possible agenda. Your party may start and end at different times, and be organized differently.
6:30 People sign in, meet each other, find refreshments and a seat.
7:00 Dial in on a speaker phone to listen to the conference call that will be going out to all Oregon house parties. The conference call speaker will be announced around May 8.)
7:20 The assigned speaker, or someone else discusses this historic campaign, and offers the opportunity to volunteer for and donate to the campaign.
7:30 Invite each person to tell what has drawn them to Senator Obama’s campaign.
8:00 Adjourn (or keep partying.)

The Oregon for Obama House Party Team is seeking volunteers for its speaker bureau. Volunteers must participate in a short training course via conference call on Monday, May 6, with campaign staff and agree to speak at one of scores of “Vote for Change” house parties taking place across Oregon between 6:30 and 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 10. (See http://or.barackobama.com/ORhousepartyhost).
Using background materials supplied by the campaign, volunteer speakers will give a short minute talk at a May 10 “Vote for Change” house party about how Oregonians can support and get involved in Senator Obama’s campaign in Oregon.
To sign up for Monday's conference call and to be a “Vote for Change” speaker, contact Kim Upham, who runs the speaker bureau for the Oregon for Obama house party team. Her e-mail is OskiFan@mac.com. Please send Kim a short paragraph about your professional and public speaking background along with your complete contact information (address, e-mail and cell phone number).
Thanks,

Last month’s “More Voices” house parties were a huge success. More than 80 parties across Oregon attracted 1,478 guests, raised $16,500, and recruited 265 volunteers, all well above our goals.
In fact, the April parties were so successful that we're organizing another round on Saturday, May 10. With ballots arriving this weekend across the state, you can help ensure Barack Obama wins the Oregon primary by hosting your own “Vote for Change” house party.
Sign up to host a “Vote for Change” house party on May 10:
http://or.barackobama.com/ORhousepartyhost
Most parties will begin at 6:30 p.m. and this special Oregon-only event includes a 7:00 p.m. conference call with a national speaker introduced by Congressman Earl Blumenauer.
House Parties are a fun and effective way to come together with friends, neighbors, and fellow Obama supporters. We'll be collecting primary ballots and discuss what we can do to encourage people in our communities to mail in their ballots for Barack.
You don't need to have hosted a House Party in the past -- all you need is a willingness to open your home to Obama supporters in your community. Our staff will provide the information and support you'll need to make your party a success.

Today several Southern Oregon (Jackson County) Obama volunteers gathered at the Triangle Park, southern end of OSU campus, to begin a "Walk for Barack" down the main street (Siskiyou Blvd.) all the way to the Plaza, where we mingled with clipboards & voter registration forms. Here are photos.
Today is the last day for Oregonians to register to vote in the May 20th primary. You must be registered Democrat to vote in this closed election.
