The 2500 year old Jewish community, which numbered over 80,000 thirty years ago at the time of the Khoemeni Revolution which overthrew the Shah, has dwindled to about 20,000. Those remaining Jews live restricted personal and religious lives, always under suspicion of being traitors for pro “Zionist” activities.Despite the official distinction between “Jews,” “Zionists,” and “Israel,” the most common accusation the Jews encounter is that of maintaining contacts with Zionists. The Jewish community does enjoy a measure of religious freedom but is faced with constant suspicion of cooperating with the Zionist state and with “imperialistic America” — both such activities are punishable by death. Jews who apply for a passport to travel abroad must do so in a special bureau and are immediately put under surveillance. The government does not generally allow all members of a family to travel abroad at the same time to prevent Jewish emigration. Again, the Jews live under the status of dhimmi, with the restrictions im posed on religious minorities. Jewish leaders fear government reprisals if they draw attention to official mistreatment of their community.
Iran’s official government-controlled media often issues anti-Semitic propaganda. Special Hebrew lessons are conducted on Fridays by the Orthodox Otzar ha-Torah organization, which is responsible for Jewish religious education. Saturday is no longer officially recognized as the Jewish sabbath, and Jewish pupils are compelled to attend school on that day. There are three synagogues in Teheran, but since 1994, there has been no rabbi in Iran, and the bet din does not function.At least 13 Jews have been executed in Iran since the Islamic revolution 30 years ago, most of them for either religious reasons or their connection to Israel. For example, in May 1998, Jewish businessman Ruhollah Kakhodah-Zadeh was hanged in prison without a public charge or legal proceeding, apparently for assisting Jews to emigrate.Other religious groups are persecuted too. This week Iran admitted that seven Bahai leaders arrested and detained more than eight months ago would be charged with spying for Israel. The Bahai faith, which began in the 19th century in what is now Iran, claims their founder, Baha’a'llah, is the last Moslem prophet, not Mohammed. Bahai’s international headquarters are located in Haifa, Israel where Bahais, along with Moslems and Christians of various backgrounds, plus other religions in addition to Jews can practice freely.This is not true in Iran.Bahais claim 300,000 followers in Iran, but there are no independent statistics on the denomination’s size in the country. The Islamic republic allows Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians, who are regarded as members of monotheistic religions, to hold religious gatherings. Judging by the uninspiring and dispassionate campaign launched by the McCain camp, one can conclude that the current regime along with the entire Republican ‘leadership,’ are completely unconcerned with the outcome of the November election, and with good reason. Last week, the White House announced that the next administration will inherit roughly, a 500 billion dollar debt. The question the American people continue to avoid is, to whom do we owe this astronomical sum? The answer, while ugly, is quite simple. We owe it to them. When Georgie W. took over the family business in 2001, he had one and only one goal: to establish a perpetual source of wealth for his father’s friends and the private interests who installed him in office. Through a campaign of lies, deceit, and propaganda he has achieved his goal.It is astounding that, in the realm of global politics, the majority of Americans and, for that matter, most citizens of the world, find it easy to dismiss the obvious while embracing the absurd. The simple truth is that Georges Bush, Senior and Junior; Dick Cheney; David Addington; along with the entire Carlyle Group; are on the same payroll as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Nouri Maliki, and Muqtada al-Sadr. Muqtada al-Sadr, now the highest paid extortionist in world history, has restrained his guns and has assumed the responsibility of turf assignment to his capos. The “surge” has merely kept the parties apart until the final deals could be finalized.Furthermore, McCain somehow holds Obama responsible for rising oil prices by attributing the phenomenon to Obama’s past refusal to support offshore drilling (did I mention absurdity). It is a foregone conclusion that even if oil was extracted from these sights, it would not impact gasoline supplies for seven to ten years and the target market for this supply would be in China. More importantly, no American voting in the next election should be complacent with the prospect of driving a gasoline-powered vehicle ten years from today. The American people have a single issue on the ballot: are we willing to allow big oil and special interests to dictate global policies of war and peace, environmental preservation, and economic stability? Are we willing to allow our children and grandchildren to kill and die for Exxon Mobil and Halliburton? It’s time for America to embrace the obvious and reject the absurd. Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and their entire multi-billion dollar propaganda machine must laugh themselves to sleep at night when they consider the following: for eight years they were successfully able to convince the American people that the American heartland, with the most powerful military in the world; with the most technologically sophisticated intelligence apparatus known to science; one which boasts of the ability to read a license plate from outer space; is under constant threat of attack by an international terrorist network with a capacity to strike at a moment’s notice that is commanded by three individuals operating from a cave in Afghanistan. Economic sanctions against Iran, regardless of how stringent or how many nations participate, will never sway Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As a despot along the lines of Saddam Hussein, he and his cronies will never "want" for anything. The citizens of Iran, on the other hand, will starve to death and Ahmadinejad would prefer that over giving in to George Bush.
I ask you this; Do you think George Bush is naive to this fact? I say no. Presuming this, why would he be making such strong statements now about placing sanctions against Iran???
I believe this is a classic case of "beginning with the end in mind." In other words, Bush knows that Ahmadinejad will not give in to sanctions. Bush will be able to say "I tried the diplomatic route. I tried sanctions."
In the end, he has one goal in my opinion. President Bush wants to initiate another war in the Middle-East before he leaves office. In fact, I'll go even furthere. Bush wants to go to war with Iran before the Presidential election. Why would he do that?
What better way to help John McCain, the war hero, get elected and keep the White House in the hands of the GOP. He knows comgress is going to the Dems no matter what he does. He also knows there are a lot of VERY OLD Supreme Court Justices.

Barack Obama's proposed diplomatic approach to Iran was headline news in the NY Times and MSNBC news programming today. It is marked particularly by a proposed pledge to abandon a policy of regime change in exchange for Iranian cooperation in Iraq and on nuclear proliferation.
The ideology-driven Bush Administration squandered its early opportunities and openings for diplomacy with Teheran. Its subsequent strategic blunders in Iraq and the broader Middle East have greatly reduced Iran's incentives for accommodation with the U.S.
It is impossible to gauge the eventual reaction from the Iranian political leadership to Obama's openings. But confrontation is not inevitable and there is far less to lose through diplomacy than can be gained through belligerence by either the US or Iran.
It may not be a question of "is it too late?" for diplomacy, but rather whether it is too early.
Nixon faced Mao, and the world changed. Reagan softened the rhetoric and built a bridge to Gorbachev. LBJ got caught up in proving to the world and Ho Chi Minh who was more powerful, and the quagmire of the conflict in Viet Nam dragged on as our military involvement escalated.
As the graduate of Columbia most in the spotlight presently, Senator Obama has issued the statement below on the heels of Ahmadinejad's visit to his alma mater.
"I would not have extended an invitation to give President Ahmadinejad another platform for his hateful rhetoric. Adolph Hitler was the worst mass murderer in the history of the world, and Ahmadinejad's denial of his crimes is offensive to Jews, to Americans, and to all people of goodwill. We have nothing to fear from letting Ahmadinejad speak in the USA. His philosophies and views are not made somehow stronger by having a platform at one of our institutions, even without the confrontational introduction he was treated to, nor will it draw new supporters to him. No, quite the opposite, his visit to Columbia focuses attention on the need for alternatives, the need to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East.
Barack Obama is willing to meet, and hold meaningful discussions, with those who do not see issues in the same light. The need for strong defense is a given, but the fundamental reason remains that we are all served best by peace - peace, which history suggests is built via diplomacy, which starts by talking.
One candidate is clearly brave enough and committed to leading us toward increased understanding, toward unity rather than increasing isolation and conflict. Bring one new supporter to this campaign (and website) by the end of this week.
The cycle of escalation must be reversed. We need Barack Obama in the White House.
The UN General assembly is meeting in New York this week and so many world leaders are in New York. The leader that has elicited the most controversy in his visit is Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who asked to visit the site of the World Trade Center to lay a wreath down. As can be expected, this was refused.
But he was invited by Columbia University to speak before students, which has led to many students and organizations protesting the decision. There have been quite a few news stories about this, some critical of Columbia's decision (i.e. International Herald Tribune, Ynetnews) others attempting to maintain journalistic neutrality (i.e. AFP, USA Today).
Personally, despite some of the rather unsavory views of the Iranian President, I think this is an excellent opportunity for students at Columbia University. It is not often that one gets to hear a speech from a foreign leader, especially one who comes from a nation considered an enemy of our own. Because of the UN's position in New York, Columbia has a unique opportunity to host speeches from world leaders.
