Actress
Jasmine Guy
, best known for her portrayal of Southern belle Whitley Gilbert in the NBC sitcom
A Different World
, joined us yesterday to kick-off
Women for Obama
in South Carolina's Lowcountry region.
The day began in golfer's paradise
Hilton Head Island
, where a crowd of several hundred ladies sporting their finest pastel linen dresses greeted Ms. Guy at the "Tea with Jasmine" luncheon. (Also in attendance were several lucky gentlemen…sans linen dresses.)
The program began with a welcome from Lowcountry Volunteer Extraordinaire
Donna Williams
, the luncheon hostess, who introduced three outstanding young women from Beaufort County.
Christina Ryan
, the reigning Miss Beaufort High School, shared her volunteer experiences and encouraged other young ladies in the room to show initiative and help people in their communities.
Maggie McEachern
, a Camp Obama alum and current volunteer in the Obama Lowcountry regional office, shared her reasons for joining the Obama campaign and her desire to see meaningful change in our country. "Half my life has been under the Bush administration," Maggie quipped, evoking a chuckle from the audience. "It's time for change."
Chelsea Allen
shared that her belief that Barack Obama would lead the country out of the war in Iraq as one of her primary reasons for volunteering with the campaign. "I don't know about you all, but I'm sick of this war. Barack Obama will get us out of this war.
Following the remarks by the three Lowcountry young ladies, Ms. Guy took the stage and delighted the crowd with the same exuberance she showed on our television screens in
A Different World
. (Her voice was noticeably absent the thick drawl from her sitcom days, but having grown up in Atlanta, she still had plenty of Southern cred!)
Guy noted that this was the first time she’d spoken in public on behalf of Barack Obama. While she’s contributed monetarily to Obama's US Senate campaign as well as his presidential campaign, Guy said, "I wanted to do more than write checks."
Guy first met Barack when he was speaking at a breakfast in a Chicago boys' school. Guy was at the school promoting her book, Evolution of a Revolutionary. Hearing Barack speak, Guy said, "I couldn't believe that there was somebody in politics that I could relate to."
In closing, Guy encouraged all of the ladies to join
Women for Obama.
