The Congress Hotel is one of Chicago's largest union-staffed hotels. Despite a city-wide standard wage of $13.20 for housekeepers, the Congress Hotel continues to pay its workers $8.83 per hour. In addition, the hotel refuses to provide decent health care benefits and a pension, and it also wants to freeze wages until 2010.
As a result, the UNITE HERE! Local 1 members have engaged in the longest-running strike in Chicago. According to UNITE HERE!, "Through four Chicago winters the strikers have each walked over 5,000 miles on the picket line in their fight for a fair contract at the hotel."
At 3pm this afternoon, Barack Obama and other leaders in the community will join the workers on the picket line in front of the Congress Hotel on 520 S. Michigan Ave in downtown Chicago.
Come show your support for working people and demand they get the wages they deserve!
We'll be heading down there to capture the action and talk to some workers-- and we'll be back later in the day with photos and video from the event.
