Sen. John McCain spent more than 10 minutes of his acceptance speech glorifying his imprisonment during the Vietnam war and his claimed spiritual renewal from a hot shot to a servant of our country. His display was in my judgement an affront and insult to those of us who served without ballyhooing the fact. Millions of veterans should have been particularly baffled by McCain's self adulation while at the same time he voted against improved veterans health care and benefits. He claims the glory of service to his country while dismissing the needs of our veterans. Yesterday while at the Appleton VA clinic I saw severely disabled veterans who served our country and quietly try to regain their lives. Service to your country is not something you wear on your sleeve and promote for your political purpose. It should be something you wear in your soul and use to guide your life. John McCain's display of his war service as a qualifier for president is an insult to all who have served our country and who are as patriotic as any veteran. The hollow shouting of USA, USA to Sen. McCain's display of arrogance and self adulation is an insult to all Americans and veterans who have served our country and continue to do so. True service is based upon humility and not self promotion.
