We received another fantastic volunteer profile from our volunteer blogger Tamara up in Reno. After reading this blog, I'm sure you might take a second look at the Bikers for Obama MyBo group.
When motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country converge in downtown Reno this week, Obama supporters Xiomara and David won’t have far to ride. The Reno volunteers will join thousands of people (organizers say up to 20,000) to cruise, rev their engines, and pay homage to “the Hogs” at the annual motorcycle event, “Street Vibrations.” At first glance, Xio and David -- who are retired Coast Guard veterans, grandparents, and business owners – might not strike you as Harley riders, but look closely at Xio’s “Xena, Warrior Princess” leather jacket and you start to get the picture. Just what the campaign needs – fighters!
Xio is also the President of Women for Obama in Reno and one of our bilingual volunteers in the area. “¡Por favor Ayúdanos! necesitamos voluntarios que hablen Español!”
Xiomara has a long, and somewhat infamous, history with the Obama campaign. When Barack came to Reno in May, she barely batted an eye when asked to get up in front of 4,000 people and encourage them to sign Pledge Cards. As if that weren't enough, she managed to leave an even bigger mark on the event when Barack took the stage at Wingfield Park, pointed to her and said, much to the confusion of everyone there, "Hey, thanks for the donkey." Turns out one of the gifts Barack received when he arrived was a ceramic donkey from Xio's shop, Moonface Jewelry. Volunteers at the Reno Headquarters will have the opportunity to win the exact same "Obama Donkey" at raffles in the upcoming months.
