Now, that side of the family, has never been the most politically correct set of individuals under the sun. That being said, I've never heard anything that comes close to the rhetoric they came up with that night said by any one of them before, let alone as casually as it was thrown around. When politics first came up, I was almost thankful, because I do enjoy a good discussion about the issues, especially during this campaign. Not to mention, my grandmother and grandfather weren't there, as among there first questions to me every time they see me is along the lines of "Did you change your mind yet and decide to give up on Obama?" However, before I even opened my mouth, I was greeted by lines that were not based on the economy, but instead based on the hate the McCain campaign has decided to deliberately inject into this race, hate that infected nearly every line my family spoke. In between baseless statements of just how great McCain is, lines such as "Obama won't fix the economy, you know how lazy black men are!" to lines of "The man works with terrorists!" and "He's a socialist and a Muslim!" began to pop up. At which point I was hoping to God that my grandparents would show up just because that, while they might just think the same things, they'd have the moral code to not go shouting it on the rooftops. Now I know what your thinking, I should have stood up for my point of view, etc. But this was my family we're talking about, more then ten people I've known my whole life against just me and my father, neither one of us much on conversation in the first place. More then anything else though, I was silent out of dumbfounded shock. You have to understand, these are things I have never heard out of them before, not even a hint of it. Matter of fact, until that night, I had always thought of them as the more tolerant side of my family. In the end, I've been spending the days since building my case, loading up on facts, and planing to reach out to them one at a time. Until that night, I thought McCain's hate speech nothing more then the blind ramblings of a failing campaign, after that night, its safe to say I'll be doing all I can to stop such hate mongering among the populace. I just hope my efforts aren't too late, and serve some needed impact against this spread of ignorance in my little corner of the country.
Now, is indeed the time for Change.
