I have just finished reading The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren to try to understand the controversy surrounding his selection by Barack to participate in the inauguration. I did not find the answer in the book which is similar to many other religious books that I have read. I decided to look at the controversy from another angle and I think that I have found the answer.
In the Bush administration, dissent was discouraged. Barack intends to encourage varying viewpoints in his administration. Barack disagrees with some of Rick Warren's views but he will listen to him. Barack is drawing the attention of America and the world to the fact that this is a different administration in Washington, DC and he is highlighting that difference. If I am in the audience at the inauguration, I will not turn my back on Barack's choice nor will I put my hands over my ears in protest.
