Change is already here

From a response to an undecided voter on the "Texas Two-Step" HQ blog:

There is increasingly a deep divide, in my opinion, between what goes on in Washington and what goes on in the lives of us Americans across the country. Congress debates steroids while people can't afford to buy gas for their cars anymore. The president is busy inventing new nicknames for other heads of state while another family is gunned down in senseless violence. We have debates over what types of torture we should use, while someone's brother, sister, son, daughter, father, or mother receives a debilitating brain injury from an IED in Iraq.

So while I agree with the other bloggers that Obama seems to possess (and has demonstrated) a reassuring ability to reach across the aisle and build consensus in order to pass legislation, I support him for a different reason.

Sen. Obama is the only candidate who is restoring meaning to the phrase, Government of the people, by the people, and for the people. And I am not talking about a speech or a rally he gives. I am talking about the change he already is accomplishing, as evidenced by the vast movement this campaign has organized.

All across the country, people of every "sliced and diced" demographic group you can imagine are joining together like family members to register voters, inform voters, get voters to the polls...and in the process, we are finding out that we are more alike than different, that "we are not as divided as our politics might suggest", that we share the same concerns and the same hopes no matter who we are or where we came from, and most importantly, that "we are the change we have been waiting for".

Already, even before he is sworn in as president, already we are enacting Sen. Obama's message of change. Sen. Obama has awoken within us our awareness of the power of community organizing.

This is something that is not "just words" and typically, perhaps, is not associated with the presidency. Indeed, it end-runs any cooperation (or lack thereof) between the executive & legislative branches - by putting power back in the hands of everyday Americans, where it belongs. It is an incredibly powerful sleeping giant that is awakening, and it is why I am voting for Sen. Obama.
