From Women for Barack Obama at barackobama.com:
October 15th is the last day of Hispanic Heritage month. California Senator Gloria Romero writes in recognition of the achievements of Latinos – and the hope that an Obama Presidency would pave the way for many more.
CA State Capitol Senator Romero writes: As the highest ranking woman -- and Latina! -- in the California State Legislature, I am proud to join Senator Obama in celebrating October as both Hispanic Heritage Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Latinas have come far in this country; we need a President who will keep us moving forward. It is time to turn the page of history and to bring to fruition the dreams of our mothers.
My Mother had a 6th grade education. I have a PhD. I understand the value of education in transforming lives, and share the great American hunger for equal opportunity and justice throughout our nation.
Senator Obama has never wavered from his commitment to finding opportunity for young people, and I am proud that he strongly supported the Dream Act, removing barriers to immigrant children on the path to college. Senator Obama has never wavered from his opposition to a war that has taken the lives of too many of our young.
I grew up during Vietnam. My generation witnessed the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. I remember the tears shed at their loss. My generation — filled with the hope we had back then for a new America -- was robbed of what should have been our future.
In Senator Obama, we win that back: our generation -- and the generations that follow -- get back the audacity to hope again, and to fight for justice. I remember hope. It's alive, and it's in us.
Senator Obama is a unifying voice for a new America -- one that embraces our faith, gives wings to our dreams, and propels us forward to a new destiny. I proudly join Senator Obama in collectively turning the great American page of history so that the dreams of my mother, along with the dreams of his father, come alive.
