is a group of Obama volunteers and supporters that meet every Tues evening at 7pm at the West Side Democratic Club at 617 S Warren. Here is an update from our latest meeting.
First on the agenda was Beth Baunoch, who is a freelance documentary film maker. She requested to film our group throughout the next 5 months of the campaign. The group decided that they had no problem with that, as long as someone who did not want to be filmed could request that. So if you see Beth and do not wished to be filmed just let her know and that will be respected.
Next, since the office has closed there has been a void left. Neeru Joyti and a few other have volunteered to be Obama representatives at the Democratic Headquarter on the corners of Jefferson and Lafayette. This will provide a central location to get out information about events and ways to get involved. Neeru will be calling all Obama volunteers and inquiring about how you would like to get involved and your availability. She will be lead on the volunteer management team.
The group is also setting up teams to handle different aspects of the campaign. We began to place people on these teams on Tues and will add to them every Tues. I have listed the teams below, if you are interested in a team let me know, or better yet come out next Tues and join in on our meeting.
I was contacted by the Obama campaign and they informed me that there will be staff for the area and they should be in place within the next 4 weeks.
Vote for Change is a nationwide voter registration drive the Obama campaign is putting on. We will be having events, tables, and door to door to register new votes and bring every ones voice to the table in Washington. I want to encourage everyone to walk through your own neighborhood and talk to your co-workers and make sure that they are registered. I have attached voter registration forms that you can print out, you may email me and I can send you copies, or you can show up on Tues night and I will have some to give out.
Finally, it will be of importance to the Obama White House that the democratic party retains control of congress to allow him greater ability to bring about the changes in his vision. Therefore part of our group has chosen to work with the democratic party. We are an Obama group. Our loyalties are with Barack Obama. If you choose not to work with other candidates, that is fine and that will be respected. Please respect those that do wish to work for other candidates, democrat or republican. One of Barack's platform is to bring about the division in politics that has all but gridlocked Washington.
Below is a letter received from the Congressman Donnelly's campaign that I would like to pass along. It was written by Ryan Mann who is a former Obama staffer, who chose to return home and work on Donnelly's re-election.
Fellow Obama Supporters,
Let me thank you all for your hard work during the Primary season. With Senator Obama winning the nomination, thanks in large part to all of your work, the General Election can now begin. With full force and energy, we Democrats are ready to deliver change to the millions of voters across the country that turned out for the first time or found a reason to believe again. Yet this election goes beyond us though. It goes beyond Democrat, Republican, and Independent, and transcends partisan division.
This election will be about solving the big issues we face – Healthcare, the war in Iraq, Education and Energy reform. Senator Obama offers us hope that these problems are not insurmountable and that together we can change the way Washington works. In a recent conversation between Senator Obama and Congressman Donnelly, Sen. Obama told Joe that he needs him, along with Baron Hill and Brad Ellsworth from Indiana to get things done. Senator Obama knows the President alone can not solve our problems, and needs a hard-working Congress who desires change as well.
We will all work together to insure that Senator Obama not only wins the General Election, but does so with Indiana’s 11 Delegates in his corner. But as Senator Obama acknowledged, he needs Joe working alongside him as well. That is why I am asking you all to help Joe in his re-election campaign. From phone calls to canvassing, from writing Letters to the Editor to delivering yard signs, Joe will need your help to continue working hard in Congress. Please call our office at
288-3488
anytime if you wish to help and join us this Wednesday in kicking off an exciting General Election season.
