New York City, NY baby...
and not only can I NOT vote...but I am Sri Lankan!
But I am still getting involved
The whole world needs a change and they need it NOW
Don't be afraid...because fear never led to victory
If you believe in something you got to fight for it.
If you stand on the sidelines...that means you are not playing...and I am telling you America -
you are a good country...a great country and you need a great leader.
Choose him now...before it is too late...and you have to wait another four more years

PJ, thank you for believing and for getting involved!
I know it would be very easy for you to just sit and let the election roll by since you can't vote.
The fact that you are getting involved says everything about the fierce urgency of NOW!

Hey Monte, have you heard? We're opening up the sixth Obama headquarters in California on Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. The Sacramento HQ will be at 20th and Q. Streets one block from The Sacramento Bee. Come on down and enjoy some food and fun during the grand opening. Even better, come on down and volunteer some of your valuable time for phone banking, etc. We'll be open seven days a week from Dec. 20 until our victory on Feb. 5 so we'll need people to staff the office too. Tell your friends and family!

We are tuning in from Massachusetts, and are proud to be supporting Barack Obama! We've been doing what we can to help out in NH as well, and my father happens to be part of a NH group called Lawyers for Obama. I do get an inside scoop on the NH news a bit, and while it is close there, I think that within the next two weeks Barack will have pulled ahead by a significant lead there as well.

Garish, there's a little bit on the "Fighting Poverty" Issues page. I just cut and pasted this for you:
Ensure Freedom to Unionize: Barack Obama believes that workers should have the freedom to choose whether to join a union without harassment or intimidation from their employers. Although an estimated 60 million Americans would join a union if given the opportunity, companies too often deny workers the opportunity to organize and improve their lives. Obama cosponsored and is strong advocate for the Employee Free Choice Act, a bipartisan effort to assure that workers can exercise their right to organize and secure initial agreements with their employers. The act requires employers to recognize a union if the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) finds that a majority of employees have signed cards designating the union as its bargaining representative (a "card check"), mandates arbitration if negotiations over a first contract stall, and imposes penalties on employers that illegally coerce workers not to join unions. As president, Obama will continue to work for EFCA's passage and sign it into law.
I'm thinking there's some GREAT information in there for them.

GM: I don't know where you will find details about this but when Obama was a community organizer he also worked for unions' rights (maybe as a civil rights attorney). He worked with SEIU there.
In addition, this supporter may also be interested to know that he got the endorsement of AFSCME IL, which, in an unprecedented move, broke off from the national office to endorse its own candidate. That is quite impressive.

Also got SEIU endorsements from several states, even though Edwards had worked tirelessly for three years for the national endorsement. Any union that has had exposure to Obama's work over the years - ie, virtually all the Illinois chapters - enthusiastically support Obama without him having to lobby them, because his work speaks for him.

SEIU was the first union to endorse him in Illinois, but he had LOTS of union endorsements when he ran for Senate there. SEIU in fact did NOT come up with a national endorsement because they could not settle on a candidate after three tries; there was a particular candidate who has spent the last few years working very hard JUST to get endorsements from unions and working in Iowa and South Carolina for support, and that candidate did not garner the national endorsement, and in fact did not garner many state endorsements; they are split between the two candidates. AFL-CIO just broke with national AFL-CIO (which if this is a union person, they will KNOW is HUGE) and endorsed HIM instead! They decided to go with the known entity rather than the promises!

New Mason Dixon polls courtesy of MSNBC are out for all 4 early states.
some of results were also seen on MSNBC and all shown on NBC - Russert this AM
Nevada is most surprising: 34 - 26 (Clinton over Obama (single digits);
Iowa is 27-25-21 with Hillary in lead, well within the margin of error.
NH: 30-27-10 (Obama is just 3% down with Edwards a distant third;
SC: Obama down by 3%! (I need to get numbers)
These polls were obtained around Dec 3-6 so no Oprah effect is included.
Net effect is that if we win Iowa, then there should be an avalache of victories in January that should even include Nevada!!
If Barack can turn around Nevada so quickly, then the National polls should ALL be in single digits within a couple of weeks.

Thanks for posting these numbers. It keeps us on our toes, which gives us the advantage to win!!
In fact, in agreement-response to somebody on HuffPo who said that Bill and Hillary were like annoying neighbors you didn't want to have to see every day, I posted this below, and I think that as we get closer to the election, more and more people will realize this:
Bill and Hillary are not only annoying neighbors I wish I didn't have to see every day, but they are worse. They are like the houseguests who won't go home. We all know the kind. They stay too long and have NO IDEA how TIRED of them you are. They just keep on grinnin' like everything they do is the right thing to do, their privilege to do, and "okay with you."
I've just about had it with these dynasties refusing to have a seat. The day after the election, the rest of the world is going to wake up and ask, "What have the voters in America visited upon us THIS TIME?" If they hear the name Clinton, we'll never get back our ability to show them we have good sense in this country. We'll be saying that we are so afraid of change and so unwilling to display the kind of daring our country was built on that we need to extend an already 20-year run of Bush-Clinton-Bush for another four to eight years, just to "play it safe". We'll be telling them that we so lack the ability to move ourselves even one degree's worth of change that out of 300 million Americans, somehow, all we can muster is the courage to keep putting the SAME FAMILIES in the White House.
If they hear the name Obama, which will be a COMPLETE 180 from the previous eight years, they'll say, "Ahh. It was all a bad dream, and it's over now. How nice to wake up to an America that is much smarter than it was during not only my eight-year nightmare, but that of the rest of the planet and every unfortunate American who didn't vote for Bush but who was stuck with him because of two stolen elections. How nice to see a courageous America again."
This is our ONE chance for a Grand Do-Over, and you'll never get me to punch a chad for anybody named Clinton.

It is the Independents that help Barack - by 12%.
Note that Barack viewed nearly identical with President Bill Clinton on how he is viewed and is viewed significantly better than Hillary - This means there is more upside for Barack in NH if he can just prove any of the following: 1. "He IS Experienced ENOUGH", 2."He is MORE Electable in November", 3. Hillary's Health Care plan wouldn't actually cover so many people as advertised and it wouldn't get approved by any Republicans".
Of Course if Barack just won Iowa, that would also push him over the top in NH.

As I replied in an earlier post, I am from Sri Lanka. We had a dynasty in our country called the Bandaranaike's. First, it was the husband Solomon B. (prime minister), wife - Sirimavo B (pm), and then daughter Chandrika Kumaratunge (president). Sirimavo and Chandrika were the FIRST female prime minister and presidents of a country in the WORLD too. They really ruined our country(which I will not get into...) What is more important is to highlight that they repeated each others mistakes on a consistent basis and the presence of this type of "in the family" politics tends to create a sense of "we can do whatever we want persona". Dont get me wrong...I like Bill Clinton. I think a lot of Democrats do. But the point is...a Hillary regime will rekindle a type of leadership that has been outgrown with the passage of time. This is a new era...and I do not want the US to make the same mistakes my poor country did.
It is important to realize...either administration (Hillary or Obama) would have strong intelligent people advising the leaders. However, Obama's regime would have THAT and an air of truth, honesty, hope and belief to change the US, that Hillary's cannot - just because of where she is coming from. I have seen this effect with my own eyes...and it cannot be disregarded.
People across the world looked up to the US as a country that maintains the rights of all people and a place that continually challenges itself and gets better by addressing these challenges.
Hillary by her nature cannot address these NEW challenges because she does not even acknowledge them.
Obama on the other hand...brings them up and tries to tackle them head on.
That is why I hope you guys can do something and make this happen
Good LUCK!
Obama 08!!!

Here are the SC results:
28-25-18 Clinton-Obama-Edwards with 2% for Biden and 24% undecided. (Margin of error is 5% so Edwards is clearly 3rd place)
Also available at Real Clear Politics:
Link
Obama is ahead by 37-21 among AA and behind 34-21 among all women. It is clear that AA men are for Obama or are undecided.
Since this was taken Dec. 3-6, it is before the Oprah effect. If Oprah turns some AA women to Obama, then he will be ahead. Of course with 24% undecided, Barack just needs to win IA and NH to take a comanding lead in SC.

34-26-9-7-4 for Hillary-Barack-Edwards- Richardson-Biden with 18% undecided (6% MOE, Dec. 3-6)
Clearly a two way race.
Link
Barack is just 3% behind Hillary in recognizing favorably. Clearly with 18% undecided, Barack should now win NV on Jan. 19 if he wins IA and NH (on Jan. 8) - I had thought Hillary could slow down Barack in Nevada!
These results are much closer than other polls. Can someone offer an explanation? Can Independents vote?

Here are the Iowa Results:
27-25-18-9-5 Hillary-Barack-Edwards-Richard son-Biden
with 11% undecided (Dec 3-6, 5% MOE)
Edwards is once again statistically in 3rd place - not a 3 way toss-up as I keep hearing.
Link
For 2nd place backing, among the bottom tear candidates, Barack leads Hillary and Edwards by 30-29-27% (refers to when they don't reach 15%)
Barack leads Hillary in recognizing favorbably, but trails Edwards and President Clinton.
Barack trails among women by 31-22% and trails among age 50 and over by 34-19.
Clearly Barack needs to do better among women and in the over age 50 group (he needs to appeal to Unite America theme and Healthcare issue).
59% of the 400 surveyed are women!
and 66% are age 50 and over.
Does anyone disagree with this weighting of women and age? If Barack turns out young people and more men than anticipated - he wins.

The 24th Amendment Ended the Poll Tax
January 23, 1964
Many Southern states adopted a poll tax in the late 1800s.
That was a way to keep blacks from voting. Many were very poor and had been slaves. On January 23, 1964, the United States ratified the 24th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting any poll tax in elections for federal officials.
Can you imagine it wasn't until 1964 that the poor were allowed to vote?

19 Amendment Generations of women worked so we can vote |
Report to Admin

Dec 9th 2007 at 10:59 am EST
Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote.
The 19th amendment guarantees all American women the right to vote. Achieving this milestone required a lengthy and difficult struggle; victory took decades of agitation and protest.
Beginning in the mid-19th century, SEVERAL GENERATIONS of woman suffrage supporters lectured, wrote, marched, lobbied, and practiced civil disobedience to achieve what many Americans considered a radical change of the Constitution. Few early supporters lived to see final victory in 1920.
Beginning in the 1800s, women organized, petitioned, and picketed to win the right to vote, but it took them DECADES to accomplish their purpose. Between 1878, when the amendment was first introduced in Congress, and August 18, 1920, when it was ratified, champions of voting rights for women worked tirelessly, but strategies for achieving their goal varied. Some pursued a strategy of passing suffrage acts in each state—nine western states adopted woman suffrage legislation by 1912. Others challenged male-only voting laws in the courts. Militant suffragists used tactics such as parades, silent vigils, and hunger strikes. Often supporters met fierce resistance. Opponents HECKLED, JAILED and sometimes PHYSICALLY ABUSED them.
By 1916, almost all of the major suffrage organizations were united behind the goal of a constitutional amendment. When New York adopted woman suffrage in 1917 and President Wilson changed his position to support an amendment in 1918, the political balance began to shift.
On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the amendment, and 2 weeks later, the Senate followed. When Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on August 18, 1920, the amendment passed its final hurdle of obtaining the agreement of three-fourths of the states. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the ratification on August 26, 1920, changing the face of the American electorate forever.

You're most welcome.
But how many know?
How many care?
How many will show up in Iowa to caucus?
My fear is that so few Americans caucus and/or vote in their state primaries and only half of Americans bother to vote in the general election.
Do you think that because children, woman and men are being injured and killed in Iraq, more will show up?
Voting was taught to me as being one of my greatest duties, perhaps because of my grandmother. I am shocked that so few even bother today.
VOTE VOTE VOTE & CAUCUS CAUCUS CAUCUS.
------------------------------
All polls mean zippo zero ziltch. Anyone can answer questions in the comfort of their own homes on their telephones. But will they get the heck out of their comfort zone and caucus or vote?
Remember how the "exit polls" didn't match what we were told 4 years ago?

I am a first-time caucuser as I am a new Democrat and really an Independent, but really didn't realize how easy (going on reports only) and critical this part of the process is. When I am calling voters, I am first hearing whether they plan to caucus, and we discuss that important decision first; before I discuss their support of one candidate or another. It's also important to remember that this is held on one night in January and you have to be there ON TIME and STAY until the end, no matter who needs dinner or laundry done or whether there is anyone to watch the kids or whatever else you need to do; I think for some it becomes a two-fold issue, between I don't have time and why bother, nothing will change.
I tell them how much more influence they can have at this level than in the general election, since participation is so low, for all the reasons they already have for themselves. I use this for Independents too, since I thought my vote in the general was enough, and that I really had a choice. When I'm done telling them about those in this country whose votes in primaries won't count and explaining why, and how important theirs is, we start to discuss issues. This is really the easy part, since what they are identifying are issues that Senator Obama makes the most sense on of any candidate.
I hate bugging people, but the only way to get THEIR feedback about what keeps them away is to ask, and respond with information tailored to what they need to hear.

Mary: Good for you, hon. It's tough as heck to call people to tell them how important it is for them to caucus in Iowa.
Their votes are so very important.
Iowans are extremely fortunate. They perhaps are so used to presidential contenders coming to their state, that perhaps they don't realize how important each and everyone of them are.
As far as I'm concerned Iowans have the
MOST VOICE in all presidential elections.
I'm lucky here in Maine if we get a blip on the news after we causus.
I'm very envious of their FIRST position, but at the same time, I strongly feel that they have a real duty to represent those of us whose caucus or primary vote will not amount to anything if the candidate has already been selected.
Super Tuesday will more then cement Hillary or Obama.

I don't see much good it did Hillary given she didn't allow her mother or her daughter to speak. What good was that supposed to do? It might have made more of a splash if Chelsea and Miss Dorothy gave a speech. They both sat silent.
I don't get it. In any case, everybody sees Hillary for who she is. She's constantly reacting to what Obama does and says rather than leading. It's been that way since Obama announced his exploratory committee.

Patty: Not so quickly, hon. Hillary is not a sinking ship.
Remember that the media needs to print something. Some idiot came up with making a comparison to have something to say.
The MSM think they have the power over many. The sad thing is that they do. I think people are so used to reacting rather then acting, to belive what they read, rather then check out facts for themselves, that we the people have given the MSM WAY too much power.

Disrespectful? I'm not sure what you mean as I'm of the conviction that one person has as much worth and value as another.
I haven't seen the NY Times. But if they are comparing the efforts of a young woman who had to endure what must have been horrible embarassment cause by her dad, I'd have to say that Chelsey's efforts need to be applauded. I cannot even look at that young girl without thinking of what she must have been through when her father's incessant affairs were held out for all to see, all to mock down to the last invasive detail.
One can't make a comparison and if the NY Times is doing that, they are way out of bounds.

Here's the WaPo talking about the Barack and Clinton campaign events in Iowa on Saturday:
"Clinton's counter-programming included three small-scale events scattered outside Des Moines.
At a stop Saturday morning in Winterset, about 100 people gathered in a chilly warehouse at the local airport, where Clinton addressed health care, veterans' benefits and organic farming. Her daughter and mother sat off to the side of the stage, smiling and clapping with the crowd. Neither spoke, although Chelsea Clinton worked the crowd energetically afterwards with a gracious "Hi, thank you for coming," while urging people to support Clinton on Jan. 3.
Clinton ignored questions about the Winfrey event, turning away from the microphones to shake hands along the rope line.
(snip)
"I didn't decide until today, but I enjoyed what I saw and what I heard," said Amy Randolph of Des Moines. Randolph signed up as an official Obama supporter at the event, and Winfrey, she said, helped to validate her sense that he was the Democratic candidate most likely to shake up Washington, D.C. "My feelings about Oprah and Obama are the same," Randolph said."

It's a good thing.
Candidates are allowed to have anyone they wish campaigning for them. Good for Chelsea, supporting her mother in spite of her own career pressures.
Keep in mind that most people don't read the NYTimes - they watch their local news station.

It's beyond ridiculous. Normally I would have been incensed, but I realized that the pundits just cannot spin this one away.
Very few people outside the beltway will care that Chelsea was or was not here or there - they will only remember Oprah and Obama.

There is no comparison and they know it. Of course the people know the deal. Yesterday our rival's events with her daughter drew very few poeple in Iowa. But some of the main news sources are not stessing that Chelsea is not a draw. It looks like our rival's support is fading, based on her crowd sizes.
Obama is having an absolutely amazing, unprecedented weekend!
Obama is writing history right now -- his is indeed a history making campaign and one Americans can be proud of too!

We should not settle for 50% plus one, that's old school/Rovian politics.

Everyone's bags were searched last night in Cedar Rapids, Secret Service was everywhere, and there were off-duty police and on-duty police in for the event. One guy was spinning a rainbow-colored umbrella near us, and it took about 10 seconds for them to get on it. It was a cheer stick, rainbow colored, but they were ON it. I was impressed!

I was at the Cedar Rapids event last night with 9,575 people. I got there early and volunteered. What an event.
The most striking thing to me was as I stood there watching Oprah "stump" for Obamam was that is was really not like stumping at all. Oprah and Obama are really so much alike (besides the funny names) They bring thier message and you dont feel like they made it up or have some sort of alterior motive. They are real down to the core. As Oprah sat there in her chair along side Michelle, it was as if she were litterally star struck by Barack. At one time she was almost out of her chair she was leaning so much. I know that feeling as tears streamed down my face for the 100th time this year as I listened to the greatest man I have ever witnessed speak in my lifetime. There have been other great men, but I have not been afforded the opportunity to see them live.
I stood there with my Obama 08 sign over my head, I could not put it down. This speech was like his JJ speech. There were so many people there and the air was full of hope and inspriation. What a wonderful opportunity we have as a nation to make a REAL impact on the world.
As I left the area, I still had my "volunteer" tag on and some people were leaving and asking for signs and whatever else they could get thier hands on! I gave them my signs and dug thru my purse for whatever buttons I still had buried down there. They could not get enough. People were singing and dancing there way out of the sadium and I wanted to cry again! (I am a big baby)
THE HOPE, THE HOPE, THE HOPE! is all I could think. I sit here still with goosebumps and tears streaming down my face.
Thank you Ms. Winfrey. Thank you from my very core, from my very being. (even though the wait in the car garage was over an hour to get out! LOL)
I love my country and I love the idea that I was able to meet MARYTNURSE and give her a hug, and I saw my man Hugh from NC and several of the people who live in my town there.
BARACK 08=REALITY!!

I know the feeling well - I volunteered at his South Beach event right before Florida got in trouble for changing their primary date. I also stood there with tears running down my face as I listened to him speak. I am going to be 62 next year which means I was a teenager when JFK was President and I was supporting Bobby and then he was killed too. Then MLK - it was a really sad time for those of us who had such high hope for our country. But I will tell you this - the difference between all of those people and Barack Obama is this - Obama just seems somehow like one of us - reachable and touchable - when I shook his hand I said to him "Senator, please take back our country for us" - and with THOUSANDS of people screaming his name around us he looked me right in the eye and said "I'm going to try and do just that". The man connects in the warmest most honest way. Michele is exactly the same. I went to a luncheon for her and she came around and hugged all of us afterward - she is the warmest person. This is the best time for all of us Obama supporters. Hope to meet all of you in DC on January 20th when he is sworn in and we all get to party!!!

Don't worry or stress too much about responding specirfically to negative comments on online sites. Instead, ignore the negatives, and post lots of positive comments, especially on TV show blogs with relatively high ratings. It's the number of positives that matters, not the content.
Virtually all of the online commenting on the internet comes from a small number of IP addresses. And most of those only comment, and don't actually read the other comments - in other words, they just want to spew out their own stuff, not listen to others. So it's the number of positives, not the content of the comment, that really matters.
dailyKos is the biggest waste of time of all for commenting - no minds are changed in the comments there - but it's a good idea to recommend positive Obama diaries so they stay on the front page. And of course, "Obama is the one!" increases the count of positive comments for our guy.
For comments with substance and/or good oneliners, focus on c-span call-in shows, and LTEs to local papers, and local news station call-ins.
Of online leftist sites, only the Huffington Post has a significant independent readership. And even there, comments are mostly not read through. At least they put the most recent comment first, so that people can skim a variety of comments. That does help. But even just "Go Obama!" helps more than you know.

I know all of us Obama supporters who have been in this from the beginning - first when it seemed so possible - then the slump when we wondered - then the pickup when we again felt the hope - and now - the real possibility again that it is going to happen - I love this!! I confess I am an idealist and have never given up hope - I always knew that if the American people would just hear him once they would be goners just like I have been from the time I first heard his 2004 convention speech - I knew - he is the one!
Enjoy this day Obama supporters - it is going to be huge!!!

I'm very sorry, but this band is completely inappropriate for this event. Whoever booked this band is a moron. There are senior citizen, black women still in their church clothes fanning themselves, and they have to listen to this.
THIS is the event John Legend should have done.

i think they're also trying to do something for young people right now, doing the youth thing... from what it looks like there'll be a variety...
