Why Michiganians should support Caroline Kennedy for U.S. Senator

Caroline Kennedy would be the best possible choice to fill the soon-to-be vacant Senate seat of Hillary Clinton for very practical political reasons.
Whoever is appointed to fill the vacancy will rank no higher than 98th out of 100 senators in seniority, which is the basis for power and influence in the Senate. As an appointee, the person filling the vacancy would have even less influence than an elected first-time senator, unless that appointee already has national name recognition and important political connections, including the president of the United States. In other words, Caroline Kennedy.
Why should Michiganians care who is appointed to a U.S. Senate seat from New York?
In Michigan, we find ourselves in the unenviable position of leading the nation in the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. We have already petitioned Congress for special relief and will be going back for even more from the next Congress.
The first, best hope for Michigan is that our next president, Barack Obama, will achieve extraordinary success in righting the nation's economy. To do that, he will need a Congress that's willing to work with his administration in passing needed legislation quickly. He will need all the allies he can find in both the House and Senate, allies such as Caroline Kennedy, whose early endorsement of Obama was a major boost in his bid for the Democratic nomination. Kennedy served on Obama's vice-presidential selection team and campaigned for him across the country.
We want Barack Obama to succeed, and that, among other good reasons, is why we should support the appointment of Caroline Kennedy to fill the U.S. Senate seat from New York.

The senate is an old institution. No matter how good job you do as a senator, the veterans have all the important tasks. Hillary who almost became president, had to sit quietly in senate waiting a decade for her turn. Than is one reason why she left the Senate.
I think the change has to come from the new president. And hope that Congress will cooperate with him.

Caroline Kennedy would not have any more real power in the Senate than any other first-term Senator or possible appointee to the vacancy, but she would have more influence than many possible appointees in terms of media attention and fostering public support for Obama's initiatives. She would have a media forum that many longer-tenured Senators would not have, and would be a significant asset.
