As a strong supporter of Obama, I am compelled to express my disappointment with his position on the FISA issue. I have done a bit of reading on this (though less than some) and my impression on this issue is that political expediency is driving Obama's position rather than "doing the right thing".
From the analysis of the ACLU and others, and supported by the position taken by Sen. Feingold and others, this so-called compromise does not protect our civil liberties.
This is a complicated issue and one which can not be dealt with sound bites. I was hoping that Obama would use his ability to make complex issues accessible and his strong background in constitutional law, to stake out a strong position against this bill and in favor of our constitutional rights.
I think the Dems in congress erred in bringing this bill up for a vote and I just hope that once Obama is elected president, he will return to this issue and revise it according to the most important document, the US Constitution.
I will not step back from my strong support of Obama on this, but do see this as an unfortunate development.
