Over the course of the last couple weeks, we’ve been shown some interesting things about McCain that while some are amusing, most truly indicate a lack of understanding that would be essential to holding the highest office in this country – a few points that I found particularly note-worthy –
“Americans are in a “mental recession”” and that America has become “a bunch of whiners” – Graham, one of McCains top close advisors on the economy – made the comment that those of us who believe that the country is in a bad straight and that our economy is declining are making more of it than it is – that it’s all in our heads….while McCain did attempt to distance himself from that remark – one really has to wonder what is going to happen if he gets into office and these are the people telling him how to approach and handle the economy – particularly when he has stated himself that “he doesn’t know much about the economy”.
McCain is “learning to get online” - and that he “doesn’t expect to be a great communicator” (HUH??) - the internet is a vital part of our lives today and for someone running to hold our highest office, they will be looked to to lead this country forward and into the future – the internet is not a new thing – its been here for years and I’m curious as to why such a “maverick” would not have invested the time to learn such a useful skill as “going online” when our country has been headed toward this future for years now – if not decades. He may have his “people” that “go on for him” – which only begs the question of who was holding his blog Q&A session(s) earlier this year.
McCain could not answer a very simple question posed by a reporter regarding his opinion on insurance companies covering the cost of Viagra but refusing to pay for birth control. I’ve never seen another politician look so uncomfortable in my life and this is a clear demonstration of how out of touch he truly is. There was no gut reaction and answer- you’ve got to wonder just how “scripted” his appearances are.
McCains
error on Czechoslavakia and that he wasn’t making a slip of the tongue and it isn’t the first time –
Steve Clemons
writes
:
“
before Republicans condemn Dems for being picky on this, let's not forget that in the 2000 campaign, when McCain also screwed up Czechoslovakia, it was none other than George W. Bush who said it deserved to be a campaign issue: "A guy gets up and quizzes me [on world leaders] ... but John McCain says something about the 'ambassador to Czechoslovakia.' Well, I know there is no Czechoslovakia [there's a Czech Republic and a Slovakia], but yet it didn't make the nightly national news."Czechoslovakia, of course,
split
into two separate countries in 1993. It isn't the first time McCain has made this mistake, as TPM's Greg Sargent
points out
: Around three months ago, McCain told Don Imus that he would "work closely with Czechoslovakia and Poland and other countries" to install the European Missile Defense System in Poland, according to the Democratic National Committee. (The slip-up was referenced elsewhere, too.) And during a GOP debate in October 2007, McCain said: "The first thing I would do is make sure that we have a missile defense system in place in Czechoslovakia and Poland, and I don't care what his objections are to it."There are more: in 1994, McCain suggested NATO be expanded to include Czechoslovakia. At a dinner in 1999, he "twice thanked the ambassador from 'Czechoslovakia' for his efforts," according to the
Washington Post
. In fact, George Bush himself dinged McCain for this blunder back in the 2000 primary. Steve Clemons
writes
:
Truly, he believes that he can run this country when he isn’t up-to-date on the countries our President will deal with? This should be a huge problem for the man who claims to be the forerunner on foreign policy. Got to wonder if he’d be dealing with the right dang countries!
In addition, when one of McCain’s top supporters Sanford can’t come up with ONE POINT in which the McCain economic policy differs from that of Bush, there is a problem. Most of the media commentators I’ve been listening to state that he was put on the spot and that it was reasonable for him to “blank” because they were asking him to state “how mccains economic policy differed from Bush” – but that wasn’t’ what they asked – they asked for ONE POINT THAT MADE MCCAIN DIFFERENT – and he couldn’t name ONE. So much for McCain the maverick.
