Advocates in the White House

Re: "Obama aides vow to speed up recovery: Millions of dollars in grants headed to state," Page 1, March 6.
As someone who has been privileged to see first-hand the work of the many wonderful people who are leading the charge in rebuilding New Orleans, I am heartened and relieved to learn that President Obama is keeping his campaign pledge to our region.
While we have a population of self-reliant individuals, an influx of young people devoted to community service and an emergence of small non-profits and social entrepreneurs dedicated to creating a better city, we still need back-up from the federal government to reach a full recovery.
The steps our president has already taken to extend assistance to those effected by the hurricanes, along with his show of good faith by sending his Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan here this week to review our needs, give me great hope that we finally have a true advocate in the White House.
