NOTE FROM STEPHEN FOX: I wanted to snag direct responses off my email as they came in without editing them or even inserting or correcting pronounciation etc., in a kind of real time Cinema Verite transcription of the responses just before the debate, during, and after: I hope you enjoy them and maybe there will be much more. Tomorrow's newspapers article and tonight's TV news are being written right now, but this is what the people supporting Obama had to say,
starting with this comment just before the debate started:LMANIV from African Americans for Obama: I will be happy when this is done. As good as she is doing im not sure if its changing people. Biden is the best person to counter her mona writes: Does she have cheat sheets?
from UCLA BRUINS FOR OBAMA: Shouldn't the next VP be able to pronounce the word "nuclear" rather than "nukular' in ones aspiring to the second highest office of the land. Sarah Palin is a joke and as a woman she is a poppet of the highest order. I have never heard a VP or Presidential nominee use the words "darn" or "heck" in a debate. She is an embarrassment to the nation. Please vote Obama/Biden. Peace, Sandra Booker
from African Americans for Barack Obama: Why does she sound like a damn cartoon character? -April
from Secular Humanist:
It appears that Moose Creek Barbie has been well coached. She is giving some very well rehearsed lectures to the American people not her opponent.
She sounds like she's answering questions in a beauty pageant..all smiling and breathy and being so high schoolish! She still can't give a good answer, though!sherry another from
April:ARE YOU KIDDING! He is killing her!!! If you're watching CNN then you see the women stats for Palin are LOW!! I mean, Biden is on fire! Just schoolin' her!
Marion, private email: Sarah Palin is standing her ground -- GOOD FOR HER! Still showing her "greenness" but GOOD FOR HER so many people were talking about her falling on her face and she's not doing it!!! GOOD FOR HER!!!!!!! And Joe Biden is bringing out points about this election FINALLY in terms that the radical religious fundamental christian right in this nation NEED TO HEAR! And then Palin (Bless her!) is confirming exactly the same arguments that many "small" people (such as myself) have been carrying on about for years and years and years: 1) Civil Rights for same sex couples not the same as defining (or re-defining) marriage (Really liked Joe Biden's distinction between civil law and personal faith)
2) The TWO STATE SOLUTION!!!!!!! (And awesome synopsis from Biden about how Bush policies have worsened the middle east situation and Israel's own) and then Palin affirmed that!!!!!! Two of the very biggest flash points between that lunatic right fringe and everyone else! And some of the "sound bites" that Joe Biden is using tonight is bringing me back to last year October/November/December when I was trying to pull together the news to match the candidates for this campaign -- and you know what? I'm thinking now that back then last year, I was getting Biden confused with McCain LOL!!!! And Joe Biden nails the issue about Dick Cheney and the office of the Vice President.... And Sarah, darling, I'm proud of you, even though I still disagree with you on very fundamental things. I hope you keep up on the same track as I'm seeing tonight. This is not your election, but you can take this "lemon" of an opportunity that McCain has disengenuously offered you, and turn it into nice lemonade for all of the USA. I really do hope that is where this point in your career takes you if that is where you want to go.Watching the rest...This one was even better than the debate between Obama and McCain! GOBAMA!!! -Marion

from John of Secular Humanist:
Wow, what debate were you watching? The one I saw had Palin everywhere but on point! She showed us exactly what we thought, that she is NOT qualified to be the VP candidate and she was just selected because she was a woman!
from RescueAmerica: OMG!!!She rocked!!!!Actually, I think it was an even debate and both were balanced and on point for their conceptions of what our country is.
from Citation again: U.S. relations with Israel than do I (and I know almost nothing other than headlines): Is the view of American Jews generally that the Bush Administration has been a disaster for Israel (the assertion that Biden was making tonight). As I say, I don't have a view, so will be interested in the better informed views of others.Palin seemed to be saying that Bush has been just hunky dory re: Israel; Biden was saying Bush has been a disaster toward Israel's interests.
Herb Snyder again: I would still enjoy spending an evening talking with her. She is delightfully daffy, and it would be fun. I would also counsel her to stay out of public office........
Sherry of Secular Humanist: I can't stand to watch her. Palin is such an ass. Do people really fall for her fake smiles, her winks, her strange voice..!!Biden is doing great!Palin still can't answer a question directly. I'll give it a few more minutes.sherry
Marion, Privately: Sarah Palin presented a wonderful model of how a lady conducts herself in this world beyond the glass ceiling, and Joe Biden presented a wonderful model of how a ~~TRUE~~ gentleman treats a lady with whom he's having a debate, in the land beyond the glass ceiling. ------------------------------------------
Ron again from Election____2008: Let's get this real, real straight - right here and now: Anyone supporting Sarah Palin is a damn fool and downright unAmerican! Well why would that be so? BECAUSE, for one thing, Palin chided Biden and anti-Bush groups by saying that anyone knocking Bush was just lving in the past and not looking forward. This bitch snapped this fluff non-chalantly, as if tossing a Handi-wipe in the trashcan. Has this unit ever heard of accountability? Has she no sense whatsoever of accountability? Apparently not....she just wants to "move-on."What in the WORLD would the late George Carlin say about Sarah Palin? Just the thought is hilarious..r o n

from Greg Moderator, Secular Humanist: Hi Lauren and All! She certainly played through as Sarah the cartoon. But I don't think she did McCain or the ticket any favors.Just my opinion. What's everybody's?Greg

from Nancy Cunningham of Dallas Air America on why Didn't Biden Accept Her Challenge to have several more debates:
You are right – Ifill should have called her on it too...What the hell good was asking questions if they weren’t suppose to answer them and when they wouldn’t answer them repeatedly for the moderator to not at least point it out? She could have said to Joe, I’m going to ask you my next question but you are welcome to do like the Governor is doing and say as a response what ever you want to say ------------------------------------------
from Greg : Doesn't look like they're buying it from the after-debate polls so far
Tamara of Secular Humanist: -the numbers will fluctuate quickly and go back to obama. i missed the last 1/3 as my kids did not allow me to view it, however, did she ever directly answer a question? "can i talk about..... " no matter what was asked? it is insulting. tamara

from JJ at Secular Humanist: Here are a couple of Polls... the more we say the more they will hear. Go Vote, Folks. If people find other polls post them so we can put in our two cents... after the bailout that is all we can afford now.JJSine dolore est vulnus, quod ferendum est cum victoria. - It's a painless wound that the victor must bear.

Stephen Fox: Yes, it is true. i read the book. it is taken entirely out of context but the people who are brandishing this quote are the kind of people who don't know what "context" even means. I suggest you get the book and read that section and the entire book before you argue with them. In the context of that comment, it made perfect and smooth and appropriate sense. Leave it to the Karl Rovians to pull something out of context and twist it around to stab you. It is what lawyers do all of the time, like it or not. Read the book, ponyhoney! I may quote you in my next article! You should be so lucky!
from Julie of Houston for Obama:Long story...but I don't have a television at this house....What are the pundits and politicos saying?? Julie-
