In the above article they discuss how Obama has relaxed concerns about how the second half of this TARP will be spent. If you read the article, the one area of concern which is a BIG concern is how they say "Top regulators say the recession will deepen without the rest of the TARP." The vagueness in who exactly these "Top regulators" are and if they were involved with scaring the current administration into allowing the banks to do with the first Half of the TARP what they wanted to do with it. These "regulators" cannot be trusted in my opinion. There's too much greed in Wall Street and too much capitulation amongst the government. The financial institutions are fine. Many, like Bank of America didn't even want the first half. I'm all for his stimulus but the second half of the TARP should be devoted to the stimulus not to these banks.

Boy, it's amazing to me how much unreported information is out there about all the lies and crimes committed by the Bush Administration.... Their attempt to re-write history, justify all the crap and now get Bush and Cheney on as many TV shows as possible to show their "human" side. It's a little too late for that, if you ask me.

What a shame that our government is donating our taxpayer dollars to support the slaughter of even more human beings. As if the past 8 years hasn't spilled enough blood in our name.

How do we pull off being "citizens of the world" who are interested in human rights, peace, freedom, and the alleviation of poverty and suffering under these circumstances?

Obama, Biden, and Hillary sure have a lot to think about. They also have a heavy burden--already they are being blamed for the relative silence of the United States regarding the crisis in Gaza and the crimes being committed there. It won't be long before even supporters will raise their voices against the new administration if Obama-Biden continue the US policy of looking the other way for the sake of US-Israeli relations.

The world is watching. To me it seems that the admin. would be making a huge mistake in this environment (with wars and tensions raging across the Middle East)to back away from prosecuting war crimes here at home. With the global economic meltdown that the entire world knows started on Wall Street, and the situations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan/India, Iran, Somalia, and Israel/Gaza--we need all of the good will we can muster. Closing Gitmo is a must. Prosecutions are, too. There's lawlessness everywhere. SOMEBODY needs to be held accountable. It's going to be Obama's job to make sure that happens. He is the leader of the "free" world. Our security matters more than avoiding justice for the sake of not upsetting people on the right who might think that prosecutions are nothing but political payback. It's about justice and it's about taking a hard stand against war crimes that were committed in our name. There is no better way for Barack to earn back our moral standing in the world than that. Until we have some ground to stand on, even Israel has no reason to listen to us.

I have a question for the new practictioners of "smart power". Go before the people of Afghanistan and Iraq and proclaim your support for the Israeli aggression against Palestine. Show courage in your proclamations. We all know what your answer will be. Yes the whole world is watching. Double standards abounds but fall far short of the cowardice and ignorance displayed by "smart power" politicians. Better yet on our domestic soil come in explain on Dr. Martin Luther Kings holiday your complicity and scheming with the forces of war and violence. Then again we already know what your answer would be.

Hillary really has a lot of charm.....People don't realize that....She just doesn't show it when she gets into attack dog mode (a mode all candidates have to use to some extent), and when there is tension with an issue with accusations thrown every which way at everyone......

I think more important then her competency is her closeness to Obama in being a good secretary of state... You need to be close with the President to be effective, as these world leaders need to know that when they are speaking to you, they are talking to the President, and commitments you make are backed up the president... this testimony really showed this that they are on the same page on foriegn policy and strategy and temperment.....

I never thought of this before but because of her broad base and celbrity status she can bring exposure to issues that Obama can't because he is too busy with other stuff..... While Obama is meeting with congress over education policy she can go to Darfur and get publicity of these issues and the policies and get the intl community to see it..

But while campaigning, Obama met with Teamsters at the Giant Eagle distribution center in Bedford Heights in February before participating in a televised debate at Cleveland State University with Hillary Clinton.

After leaving Northeast Ohio, Obama will head to Philadelphia. On Saturday, he will take a daylong train ride down the East Coast with stops in Delaware and Baltimore en route to Washington, D.C., where he will be sworn in on Tuesday as the nation's 44th president.

Obesity is what I would like to see most changed in my community. It's tragic to see children and adults both young and older so very heavy. They will suffer many health problems.

"The number of obese American adults outweighs the number of those who are merely overweight, according to the latest statistics from the federal government.
Numbers posted by the National Center for Health Statistics show that more than 34 percent of Americans are obese, compared to 32.7 percent who are overweight.

In the 1988-1994 surveys, 33 percent of Americans were overweight, 22.9 percent were obese and 2.9 percent were morbidly obese. The numbers have edged up steadily since.

32 percent of U.S. children fit the definition of being overweight, 16 percent were obese and 11 percent were extremely obese.

Being overweight or obese raises the risk of heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, arthritis and other conditions."

to raise tax money - tax high fat snacks and sodas

New York's planning on taxing diet sodas as -

they are linked to obesity/over eating

Liquor and cigarettes are already taxed - so there's a precedent here

i've long said that if they want to do something about nutrition in this country, it ought to be just as easy to get a submarine sandwich as it is to get a whopper, and it should be cheaper to get a piece of fruit than a candy bar.

but why tax diet soda? why on earth would they not tax drinks that actually HAVE calories??? i mean, if you are going to tax something....

I read somewhere of the deleterious effects of diet soda - and then read about Paterson and put the two together INCORRECTLY -

"A can of Coke could soon cost New Yorkers more than just calories.

Gov. Paterson, as part of a $121 billion budget ... proposes an "obesity tax" of about 15% on nondiet drinks.

This means a Diet Coke might sell for a $1 - even as the same size bottle of its calorie-rich alter ego would go for $1.15.

I'd further propose, just as liquor and cigarettes can't be purchase with food stamps - neither should obesity promoting foods.

Maine has had a snack tax for years. And, yes, they do tax diet soda.

I do not believe that taxing certain sugary products is the answer.

Americans eat way too much. The portions are too large. Restaurant portions are very huge.

Education at school, at home, on TV, magazines and newspapers is the only way folks will learn how to eat healthy and sensibly.

England is in bad shape also.

This week did not start off too good for me. As most who know me remember, my regular & emergency unemployment ran out.

Last night our middle son, who lives over in the Tampa/St.Pete area called us to tell us he was moving back into this great old house he had lived in about 5 years ago. The owner had gone through a divorce an had to vacate the home so our Michael had to move out. Fast forward. divorce over, the husband (our son's friend) got to keep the house and told Michael he can move back in. The history of the house it's been around since the late 1800's, it's wood and was purchased from the Sears catalog. If one can believe a house can be a collector's item, that's exactly what it is.

Michael is moving back in this weekend and sometime between Feb 1st and 3rd we will be joining him. He's delighted, of all the kids, he's our favorite and has longed for us to be close to him.

The best news, upon arrival, Michael's girlfriend has a job ready and waiting for me.

So to all of you that prayed for Art and I and said something good will happen, I take it, this is it. I have no idea how you all knew that, I was too busy crying and couldn't see a foot in front of me. But you all knew.

You never gave up faith and hope even when I felt there was none. I never really gave up my faith & hope, I was just to stupid to see beyond my tears.

The best part of the move, there are PE Obama grassroot organizers every 5 miles. Where we live now there is nothing. I can finally join service group and roll my sleeves up and do so much more than I have where I am now.

So to everyone here who had the tubes of glue and kept me together this week, "THANK YOU, THANK YOU".

Where the is love there is hope and you have shown your love for Art and I more than you can ever imagine.

I had to share my good news. I forced you all into the slumps & dumps with me and it's only fair I take you all on my next great adventure.

Hillary Clinton never got her coronation as President, but her confirmation hearing to be Barack Obama's secretary of state on Tuesday came mighty close.
With her daughter, Chelsea, sitting behind her right shoulder, the soon-to-be former New York senator took a few jabs for hubby Bill's foreign work, but the rest was all hugs - literally.
"I'm confident that there is no one - no one - who would better serve our country and the world as the next secretary of state," gushed Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) before giving her a hearty squeeze.
"Her presence overseas will send a strong signal immediately that America's back," spouted Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.).
And Republican after Republican praised a woman once called the most polarizing figure in America.
"Thank you for your leadership; for your willingness to step forward and assume this very, very important position," said Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
Clinton couldn't have gotten a better reception had her relatives sat on the dais - and Kerry even made an offer for Chelsea to join them.
"Your mother said ... that she wished you weren't sitting behind her, but she could look at you," Kerry said, indicating the row behind him. "Maybe we can make you an intern for a day, chairman's prerogative," Kerry said, offering the former First Daughter a seat near him.
In spite of lots of complicated, dry questions, Clinton was so tickled by the deluxe treatment she accidentally called Kerry "Mr. President."
"I'll take that," the 2004 White House contender said. "It was a Freudian slip," Clinton apologized.
"We're both subject to those," he joked. She added: "On this subject, especially."

Republicans - and Kerry - pressed her to disclose more of hubby Bubba's Clinton Foundation dealings, saying he should immediately reveal contributions of more than $50,000, rather than wait for the end of the year.
Clinton rebuffed the idea.
"No President has ever disclosed the contributions to his foundation," she said. "When my husband agreed to disclose the contributions to his foundation, that was a very unprecedented event."
The ex-President kept himself out of the spotlight, staying at home to watch the hearing on TV with his mother-in-law, Dorothy Rodham.
And despite objections on the foundation question, top Republican committee member Richard Lugar of Indiana said he'd vote for Clinton.

I was glad to have had the opportunity to see the hearing for myself without the MSM spins and filters. I was very proud of HRC and yes, the majority of the senators did behave like adults. I believe she is going to be very effective as the SoS.

The activist group Gulf Restoration Network is staging a news conference Wednesday morning in Tampa to demand action from a multistate organization that is charged with protecting the gulf.

The news conference precedes a meeting of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance to hear citizen input on plans to protect the gulf.

The alliance released the first Governors' Action Plan in 2006, and a second five-year plan is currently under review.

I believe all these action groups are great and do wonderful things however I believe the best approach for the entire country is leadership that recognizes there is an issue and a country that works communally to resolve it. America now has that leader..demanding is not necessary. Change.gov.

Conveniently, Bush mentions him on Larry King Live last night & voila 12 hours later the "supposed" Bin Laden rears his ugly head.

What else will "Dubaya" use to try and salvage his reputation?

"Let's use some good old FEAR to scare everyone away & so they'll look on me fondly".

The MSM goes into to overdrive spreading the nonsense even before it's been considered authentic. That is if there is really anyone on the planet that can truly determine authenticity?

I heard a short clip this morning on MSNBC and it sure didn't sound like Bin Laden's previous taped voice.

CTV (Canada) is reporting the story, however it appears the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) and the BBC (British Broadcasting Corp.) are not reporting the story, most likely waiting for the tape to be validated as authentic.

I know it's really scary to believe, but radicals are real and their fight against us is too. I am a Democrat and generally liberal, but some liberals' skepticism of extremism and the very real desire they have to kill us, is hard for me to get behind.

I think all you need to do is look at Obama's national security choices, his change in demeanor and tone when discussing our foreign threats, to know that folks like bin Laden are real and they mean us harm.

I can only imagine how serious those intelligence briefings he gets are.

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she's confident that the remaining $350 billion in federal bailout funds will be better spent under Barack Obama.
The California Democrat said "things will be different because we will have a president who will enforce the law." She spoke Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America."
Obama is pressing Congress to allow his administration access to the second half of the bailout program, known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program. The Bush administration has been criticized for a lack of oversight in how the first $350 billion of the money was spent.
Pelosi says the bailout spending under Obama will be more transparent.

Morning Arlene...You are so right...Here is South Florida it can feel very, very cold when in the 50's...Not just because we are not use to cold, but because our proximity to the water makes it "feel" colder....I will have my fireplace going tongight!!!

I'd actually be happy for anything above 32F. It is all relative. It's miserable here in PA right now as I prepare to get the bus for DC. It was 4 degrees this a.m. It will be miserable if it is that cold. I just hope it's not cold and windy. I'm a wuss if the temp is below 20 degrees F. Winters in the UK are fairly mild so I'm not used to anything much below freezing anymore.

I heard this morning some "pundits" saying that Barack Obama was going to be the first "Independent" president.. That many on the left will be unhappy with him because he is NOT about ideoloy but about SOLUTIONS!! And that he has always been that way, even when he was President of the Harvard Law Review....

I don't know about others on this blog, but that is exactly the reason I have supported him....I am sick to death of "grid lock" because of ideology....I want SOLUTIOMS!

Florida Legislature set to chop budget by $1.2 billion

The Florida Legislature is expected to vote along party lines on the budget cuts. PHIL COALE

TALLAHASSEE -- Nearly every state program will get officially cut Wednesday when the Florida Legislature votes along party lines to approve about $1.2 billion in budget reductions.

On average, the cuts will reduce state spending by about 2 percent, leaving the budget at $65 billion -- about what it was in 2006.

Legislators also plan to raid about $1.6 billion from special accounts.

Environmental programs will take one of the most severe cuts -- about 12 percent -- as part of a $240 million cut to the Department of Environmental Protection. The Florida Forever bond program, which buys land for conservation purposes, was whacked by $105 million.

Hospitals and nursing homes are somewhat spared, road programs are barely touched and providers of services to developmentally disabled people get a 5 percent rate cut.

State lawmakers also decided to raid special accounts called trust funds, taking $190 million from a housing fund. Still, they redirected about $43 million to another housing initiative to help people pay rent and make first-home down payments.

With few exceptions, Democrats plan to vote against the budget because Republican leaders refused to consider raising cigarette taxes, closing tax ''loopholes'' or approving Gov. Charlie Crist's gambling agreement with the Seminole Tribe that would have brought the state $137 million.

The budget proposal does raise new revenue, however: Traffic fines are going up and nursing homes will pay a tax on profits. Also, legislators plan to allow local governments to pick up more of the tab to help fund Medicaid hospitals.

Orlando Democratic Rep. Scott Randolph said his Republican colleagues were guilty of hypocrisy.

'Why is it that when Republicans raise revenues, they call it an `enhancement' or a 'fee?' '' he asked. ``But when Democrats want tax fairness, it's called a tax increase?'

I don't get on much but help is needed in Florida. This story touches my heart as this child reminds me of my son.

Adji Desir is missing from Immokalee, Florida. He is six years old and has a developmental disability as well as speaking only a few words. Here's a link to the story: Link

Authorities are going to scale down the search and as a parent of a child who has this same disability, I am horrified. If you are in the area or have relatives that do, please ask them to volunteer. This child, I am sure is scared. And he's alone in this big, busy world.

I know the blogs wasn't meant for this but if all these news orgs can give attention to Caylee, they can do it for a child who can't speak. Please help!!

My grandson got his student loan yesterday so he can continue college. I had told him 2 weeks ago to stay on them so he gets his money before the new budget comes about. There are two Horrible sides to the killing of children in Gaza

The first is that, although Israel has 'warned' they were going deeper into Gaza - and therefore there would be more civilian fatalities -

there's NOWHERE for the most people to go!

The second is that, Hammas is notorious for putting children in harms way - in other words - hiding arms and terrorists in elementary schools -

Guaranteeing the loss of children's lives -

and innocent civilian lives -

The photographer (now the official photographer) who took that photo said this morning on Today that when he first met Obama, when Obama came to Washington, that there was something "special" about him even them...He went on to say that people just gravitated to him, even though he was the "new kid in Washington"...Awesome!

Obama Souvenir Sales Turn President-Elect Into One-Man Stimulus

Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Aissa Tou, manager of the Making History store at Washington’s Union Station, may be in the troubled U.S. economy’s only recession-proof business: selling Barack Obama souvenirs.

“He’s helping the economy in his own way,” says Tou, whose shop is selling as much as $5,000 a day worth of Obama t- shirts, buttons and other merchandise during the days before the Jan. 20 inauguration of America’s first black president.

As city officials prepare for as many as 4 million visitors, vendors are looking to sales of Obama mementos to carry them through the winter. With hundreds of available items, they say, the more bizarre the better.

“Hot 4 Barack” hot sauce and life-sized cutouts of the president-elect are flying off the shelves, Tou says. Top sellers include a t-shirt with likenesses of Obama and Martin Luther King Jr., and another depicting future first lady Michelle Obama in the iconic pose of Rosie the Riveter.

Obama’s inauguration is a “high-profile gathering bringing people with lots of money” into the capital, says Rebecca Pawlowski, a spokeswoman for the Destination DC tourism and convention office. Washington’s hospitality industry takes in $5.5 billion a year, she says, with the average overnight visitor spending $34 a day on souvenirs.

In the coming days, visitors will be buying $16.95 pint glasses, $12.95 mouse pads and -- among the most popular items -- $29.95 Obama bobble-head dolls, says Jim Warlick, president of Political Americana, which operates a store a block from the U.S. Treasury, along the route of Obama’s inaugural parade.

Tacky to Chic

“We’ve sold 2,000, and have 2,000 more coming,” says Warlick, who has marketed memorabilia at every inauguration since Republican Ronald Reagan moved into the White House in 1981.

Souvenirs, from tacky to chic, are a customary feature of presidential swearing-in ceremonies. Fans of departing Republican President George W. Bush had two chances, in 2001 and 2005, to stock up on commemorative inaugural coffee mugs, drink coasters, cuff links and paperweights.

The rush to buy Obama mementos will likely triple the demand during Democrat Bill Clinton’s first inauguration in 1993, which had been a high point for sales, says Warlick.

MoveOn.org To Rally For Obama's Economic Plan

Some South Florida residents along members of the grassroots political organization MoveOn.org plan to deliver petitions on Wednesday to several key politicians asking for the swift approval of President elect Barack Obama's economic recovery plan.

Wednesday supporters of the plan will rally in front of and then deliver signed petitions to the offices of U.S. Representatives Ron Klein, Robert Wexler and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

According to MoveOn.org, their members applaud Mr. Obama's emphasis on investments in green jobs, health care, and clean energy and urge that his plan is passed quickly without weakening its policies.

"After eight years of mismanagement of our economy, we need real solutions. President Obama's first act will create 3 million new jobs and jumpstart investment in sectors that really benefit the American people," said MoveOn.org member Dave Patlak from Miami Beach.

The South Florida rallies and delivery of petitions will be just a few of the hundreds of MoveOn.org rallies around the nation that will emphasize the need for bi-partisan support for Mr. Obama's plan.

As a person who voted for you, I am terribly saddened by what I just read. Mrs. Obama has hired an INTERIOR DECORATOR! Is the White House not good enough as is? Is it shabby and rundown by the Bush family?
In this horrible economic environmenr, how can you justify spending thousands to redecorate a home most of us would die to have "as is"?
If you are going to set the right example for Americans who are suffering terribly right now, you will forego such frivilous things as interior decorators and designer clothes!!
Show us we voted for a person who is not an "elitist." We would expect this sort of behavior of a Bush or Kennedy, but not someone of your upbringing and concern for the "average American." Were your words just rhetoric and are we to already be disappointed by your failure to live up to what we thought you were? Very sad!!

Had no idea Laura Bush purchased china & unveiled the china January 7th, 2009. Guess I missed that tidbit.

According to this article the china cost $492,000. for a 14-piece place setting. That's half a BILLION dollars. My goodness! In these times when people are losing their jobs, children/women/men have no health care, when the country is in DEBT and the Economy hits depression-like conditions, job losses are at a figure not seen since 1945.

And, she see fit to spend HALF a BILLION DOLLARS on china for 14 people to eat dinner?

As First Lady, Michelle will have a busy schedule...not a lot of time to pick out towels, curtains, lamps, etc.

The decorator will work on their personal rooms; all past presidential families have decorated their personal rooms.

I understand this decorator likes to pick things up at Target.

The Obamas should be able to live at the standard of all the previous 43 presidential families.

I call it a double-standard or being held to a higher or different standard. I hope they decorate, party on the 20th and enjoy every opportunity when they vacation, etc. One thing is for certain; them living like paupers is not going to increase anybody's standard of living. PEO is about to inherit a mess and he and his family are going to have to give up things that we will never know about. It appears to me that since the election, he's been working at presidential level and not bearing the fruit of collecting the presidential salary.

When others are doing well, the best thing that you can do is be happy for them. Otherwise, you can fall prey to the "Envy" and "Jealousy" twins and be really miserable.
