Nov 16th 2008 at 12:27 am EST (Updated Nov 16th 2008 at 12:27 am EST)
Today at work I was discussing the SOS position as it relates to Hillary. I suggested another position would suit Hillary much better than SOS and named a few. He said those jobs do not offer the power that SOS does.
Yes, the key word is POWER...and the fact that he bought into the assumption that the position should be offered to give someone of a certain status the necessary POWER they desire was really depressing.
The SOS comes with a large staff and no doubt, if Hillary recieves it, she will staff it will ppl who are loyal to HER.
My disagreement with the possible pick of Hillary has nothing to do with Hillary personally.
We face challenges in countries (in the Middle East) that are 100 years behind us when it comes to the way they treat women. Some leaders will not shake a womans hand. With all that we know about the countries where we face our greatest challenges, why are we placing yet another women in the post of SOS? Yesterday I spoke of this issue and asked exactly what did Madelyn Albright and Condi Rice accomplish as SOS??? Were the leaders secretely offended by having to deal with a women as SOS? Are we being offensive by sending women to countries in an arrogrant attempt to throw the success we as women have in this country in their face and hope they will change their ways? This is not the job of the SOS.
What is the purpose of choosing a women for this post? Hillary wasn't even able to decode the body language of her husband when he was having an affair right under her nose...will she be capable of understanding the body language of men who are cunning and calculating?
This job needs to be returned to a man who is more capable of accessing when another man is giving him BS.
This job is HUGE and we need to make GREAT PROGRESS in our foreign policy. Chuck Hagel or John Kerry are better suited for this position.
As I stated before, I have absolutely no beef with Hillary. I want to see positions filled by people who have the greastest opportunity to garner results. It is not unrealistic to factor the sex of a candidate when accessing if that person will be handicapped by it.

PLEASE, not Hillary for State . . PLEASE! I have known her and Pres. Clinton since 1972, and their loyalty is not to Obama or the principles on which this campaign was based.
Sure, we need to unify the party and there will be many contributions she has yet to make, but I see absolutely no reason at this point to just give away the store to the people who tried so hard to drive us into the ground.

I really think that Hillary Clinton would be a poor choice for any job in this administration. Bill and Hillary seem to be loyal only to themselves, and are motivated only by thier own self interests. The only reason she became a New York senator was to have some kind of credibility when she ran for president. I believe that she is still and will always be very bitter about having her dream of becoming president ruined by Barack Obama. She had planned on running in 08 since early in her husbands presidency. Her nomination was suppose to be a sure thing, but it was derailed by Obama, and I don't think she will ever get over it. I don't think Bill will ever forgive the Obama campaign for the way he was treated either.

let's not forget the conflict of interest posed by bill clinton who has had and continues to have shady dealings with foreign officials and citizens. i am not trying to bash bill but these are things we cannot afford to sweep under the carpet for the sake of the nation. granted bill has some impressive humanitarian works also in places like africa but the fact is his/their shading dealings will hurt us more than his good works will help us. besides, not to be so repetitive, hillary is too hot-headed for the job, imo. so therefore hillary clinton is a seriously risky option for sos. this country is in a bad shape we need a better sos (secretary of state) option to assist barack in sos (saving our souls!). seriously, we can handle domestic drama, but spilling it into foreign territories will doom us. but i will accept barack's option because he has more info than i do to make the right call.

I think it would serve you well to come clean with what Hillary Clinton really said. When asked "what would you do if Iran shot a missile into Israel?", Hillary Clinton's response was that she would obliterate Iran. You must remember that Hillary has always had a lot of support from the Jewish community and this strong remark was to ensure them of her commitment to keep Israel safe - it served her well, and it also served Barack Obama well when she was campaigning for him. Don't you agree?

I can't believe that you think a woman couldn't be SoS!!!! I am of two minds about Hillary taking up the job, but your arguments for having a man in the post are not really well-founded.
The current possible PM for Israel is a woman and believe me, she's one tough cookie and the Muslim heads of State will just have to deal with her and will deal with her just fine. Condoleeza Rice, whatever you thought of her, holds her own with these men.
I find your comments to be very sexist in their tenor. It's this sort of thing many Palin and HRC supporters are responding to and it alienates them further and hardens them against Obama. Sexism is alive and well let's not contribute to it or give people excuses to turn against Obama.

If you want to discuss my views on the issue that is fine. Clearly reading is not your strong suit, as you would see that I've never asserted that women aren't smart enough or strong enough for a position of power like SOS. All I wondered was whether certain misogynistic cultures had a problem with dealing with strong women. That was it.
I'm honestly shocked by your name calling, I don't think I've ever exchanged words with you on here and I'm very offended that you would refer to me in such a way.

There you go again Victoria.
Coming here to call people idiots?!
A woman who is so concerned about other woman to call them idiot's just because they are capable to do something what you might not be or just might not like (to think with their own brain, not with any other organ, and have their own position on the issue). Instead have and promote position of radical extremistic feminsts.
May God help woman whos rights depends on feminists.
Regarding Cippi Livni I really do not see the point to even mention her in the frame of Obama Nation except to keep feminist extremism in play. Maybe she is good maybe she is not, we do not know now because we do not see any international effort that she accomplished by now, nothing serious. We never saw something like that by Hillary either (except that sniper fire). Maybe she will be good, maybe not. We will see.
By the way; don't worry to much about Hillary. Your lobying here for her is pointless because it's only Barack's call and if he decide to put her there we will support that because of him not because of her, because we trust in his judgement not in her. We know her, so does Barack. However your opinion is welcome just as anybodies else (as long you don't call us idiot's and spread division with hate rethoric).
Once again I will quote Voltaire:
"I disagree with you but I will fight to death for your right to express your opinion"
Just do us all and yourself a favor and reconcider your language before you next time open your mouth. Baking cookies is good creative and inspirational way for any kind of reconcidiration. I love cookie's. Especially Aunt Becky cookie's. They are magnificant, trust me. We all love them here.
I don't like to see any Obama supporter being called "idiot" by anybody and keep in mind; we in Obama Nation are very sensitive about that.
Woman equality is right of every woman to have their own position on anything just like every man does. Woman equality is not obligation to line up behind feminist extremists (professional victims of abuse).
I am urging you to read my book
"Family Testament" because it could have healing effect on you and maybe complete revelation.

Exactly my point. Have we forgotten the very reasons why we fought so hard to put in Barack over Hillary. Now Iran will have the same reason to gear up against us as was used by Bush to rationalize attacking Iran- because someone with loose lips made an irresponsible loose cannon commnent.
Hillary insulted our intelligence with the Bosnia matter. Will she also be lying or fabricate how she perceives what a strained versus peaceful relationship is.
As for the fact that she is a woman- give me a break- Maggie Thatcher was a woman. Cruella DeVille also had an xy chromosome. Gender calling is not part of a healthy decision.

1. The idea that Mr. Obama should select or not select a SOS based on gender - is insulting to all candidates.
Secondly, the idea that a man as SOS would be more 'acceptable' to the leaders of certain nations suggests that their biases against women are/should be more important than selecting the best person for the job.
Their biases are their problem and we can not accommodate someone else's reality - at our own expense.
If the best candidate is a woman, so be it. Given enough time, certain individuals will hopefully figure out exactly why she was chosen - and her gender - will be as irrelevant as it was on the day she was hired.
When representatives from other nations visit the United States, we honor and respect their value systems, cultures, and norms.
American representatives who visit other nations - should be afforded - the same level of respect.
2. I have been amazed at the number of women who have been complaining about 'sexism' and the 'treatment of women' throughout the entire campaign process.
What women do - is important. What some people may say/think about women - is not important.
We know not to feed 'trolls'. So why would a woman even bother to respond to a foolish individual with foolish ideas - about women?
"Next question, please" - is the only answer to a 'sexist' comment. Why? Because if a comment is indeed stupid - it doesn't deserve an answer.

As a Clinton supporter who then supported Barack Obama, I am just sick to read the posts that his supporters are making ridiculing her. Her embellishment of Bosnia wasn't near the big story that Barack Obama told about his parents meeting in Selma - 4 years after he was born.
Perhaps it would do everyone a bit of good to take a step back and trust that Barack Obama will put the most qualified person in the Sec of State job - and from where I sit, that is Hillary Clinton.
And, you would do well to remember that without Hillary and Bill Clinton, Barack Obama just might not have been the president-elect because their campaigning in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida brought those states into his column.
I really didn't think Barack Obama supporters could be as nasty as some I have read herre.

Just a comment..
Our slavery import business here is the USA at that time was less than 8% of the real slave trade business going on in the rest of the World.
Great Britain had already outlawed it, most of the "trade" went to South America and Bahamas, Burmuda, etc
The USA was the least of the money earned by slave traders in the world.
But how come "we" seem to be "the bad boys" in History!
Can you say propaganda and the "news media"????

But it's going to be a zoo and I'd probably get a better view from watching it on tv.

But I do think that the cultures we are dealing with view women much differently and I do wonder if having a woman deal with these countries is an avoidable barrier for brokering peace.
Who knows.

I knew my comment would be misconstrued. I have no problem with a woman president of the U.S. either. And I know about past and present female leaders in other countries.
I am just wondering whether or not gender is an issue when we're trying to deal, diplomatically, with countries that aren't as equal and open as ours.
That's all I'm saying.

In Afghanistan, earlier this week, young girls on their way to school were attacked, battery acid thrown on them, blinding and disfiguring these young women. The next day, none of the girls (over 1,000 in the area) would go to school. They are staying home out of fear so the mission is accomplished by the thugs.
And you think the answer for America in dealing with these kinds of people is to remove our women from positions of leadership and power and keep them home too? You think the answer is to make those kinds of people more comfortable in dealing with us diplomatically by making sure they don't have to "deal with" an American woman as SOS?
I just want to make sure I'm hearing you correctly.

It is so frustrating that it is women making these comments, I agree. I have to say I was shocked that there are proponents of this kind of thinking still out there. I would recommend people get more informed about international relations and realize that gender is not an issue at the top echelons of leadership and actually it is a good thing to have women in positions such as SOS.

My comments were to DISCUSS gender issues on the international level. I do not PROMOTE gender discrimination.
I try to avoid discussions like this because inevitably people become emotional. I do not appreciate being called ignorant, an idiot, or sexist because I expressed an idea based on my suspicions of these less than progressive countries we have to deal with.
Once again, I do not believe women are incapable of fulfilling these roles. My question lied with the countries that do not treat women equally, and how they view dealing with women. I believe Obama should appoint whomever he wants, male or female. I only sought to consider the barriers that being a female may create with these misogynistic cultures.
I am very offended that people who do not know me, who I don't converse with on this blog would make generalizations about me like you have, based on this one issue. To label me with the words you 2 used is upsetting. You have no idea what barriers I have overcome, what I've done in my life, and how I got here. If you did, I'm quite sure you'd realize that my motives were anything but sexist, ignorant, or idiotic.

Vero, I just don't agree with you or Linda on this one.
Make any other argument you want against HRC taking the post. But a woman will be just fine in this job and there are numbers of qualified female and male applicants.
The future PM of Israel is likely to be Tipi Livni (blanking on how to spell her name at the moment) and Israel has had a female PM. There have been female leaders in these countries and they will just have to deal with women. Kowtowing to their gender ideology is a total pander.
We need to be a beacon of equality. Obama's election was a beacon to teh world about equality based on race and I would really be disappointed if he pandered to sexism.
Gender is not an issue in these appointments and most world leaders are grown up enough to deal with it even if it's not their first choice.

You and Victoria are trying to make case that simply doesn't exist. Let me just remind you; sexism is two way street. You two believe that Hillary is best choice which is just completely unacceptable for most of others here for very simple reason: She is not. There is a lot of other people who fit far better in that position then she doe's everybody knows that. Could she be an option? Maybe. But she is definatelly not the best choice. This statements have nothing to do with sexism but your reaction on all this people opinions and blind bullying in support of her does.

Come to think of it, I think people from "those cultures" also have a problem with Jews. Better not appoint any of them either.
Actually, I think people from "those cultures" have a problem with white Americans generally. Also Christians. Better add these "avoidable barriers" to the list too.
So what will we really have at the end of day when we find someone for SOS who doesn't make folks from these "other cultures" uncomfortable or angry? What kind of real and lasting peace agreement will we have brokered? Hmmm...

Mornin' all! It's been awhile. I, too, have been catching up on life.
I see a little firestorm has been created this morning by gender-based comments. When I looked at Linda's commentary, I took from it more of an issue about Hillary because of the mistakes that she had made in the past than it was about women in general.
That being said, here's my two cents:
There have been plenty of women who have filled important and even the chief executive positions of government in the past several decades. If you look at humanity in general, you see that people fear the unknown People fear change because it is an unknown.
This is why you are hearing the racially-based comments about Obama. This is why you hear the comments about Emmanuel being a "militant Jew". They fear the unknown. Sure, they know we need the change, but they are deathly afraid that it may work out badly.
A case-in-point:
Yesterday I held a fundraiser where people could get their picture taken with Santa. One small child, when asked if she wanted to get her picture taken with him, excitedly said, "Yes!" But when told to come over to where he was, immediately screamed, "NO!" (She had earlier asked if Santa was going to "eat her".)
She wanted to see him, but was afraid to go over to him because she didn't know him. The ironic thing was that once she finally had tremulously stodd in front of him for a picture, all of her fear had vanished and she talked to him non-stop for a good five minutes straight!
So folks, don't sweat the name-calling and the rumors. After all, if we had paid attention during the campaign, we would never have gotten to this point at all!

This job needs to be returned to a man who is more capable of accessing when another man is giving him BS.

Many people have respectfully made their point (can't say that would include you) regarding how women in leadership roles in those countries are typically accepted in ways that those countries do not accept their own women. I see that point and now that gives me another perspective to consider.

I guess he has decided to pass this and all the other mess that was created during his 8 years on to the next administration.

It is a vastly underreported fact that Presidents truly have little control over the economy. What they DO have the power to do is help to shape public perception and attitude. Obama, his advisors, and the Congress, with oversight from the American judicial system, can, through good legislation signed into law and good policies, allow the American people to feel confident that the problems are being addressed.
This is what FDR did during the Great Depression. And I believe that this was the ultimate reason that Obama was elected with the mandate that he was. He has the ability to set the stage for the economic recovery. His very being projects poise, equanimity, and ability.
Will it take time? Yes. After all, we have numerous laws to pass that will require careful study to make sure we are not adversely affecting ourselves as a nation. We also have an entire nation mired in bad energy and economic habits that we need to retrain. But we need to do it, and we will.
So, let's get started!

I understand she will most likely scare the terrorists into respect and maybe beat the crap out of them; she may play into a good cop bad cop routine with Obama, this could be good- but will it make the world the happy place we want it to be- well I am willing to entertain the keep your enemies closest to you, Johnson was said to have been part of the meeting at the Clint-Murchison meeting. It's almost entertaining watching everyone get spun by this HRC as SoS speculation.

Thank you for the perspective that this is media induced trauma. Hopefully that is all it is. We worked so hard for an anti-war candidate. Everyone is forgetting that this move was historic itself apart from any gender, age or color issues.
Bill Richardson gets my vote, someone who can lull things over and chill people out.
I feign a heartattack worrying if Hillary will tell us stories that she was under sniper attack when she landed and therefore recommends more war in line with all the campain money she rendered from the military complex.

Way to go Karen, Bill Richardson would be definatelly broadly accepted, I can also easily agree with Linda's options (Kerry or Hagel), I personally belieave that Maddy Albright should be deeply concidered too (very deeply by the way), and of course do not forget Richard Holbrooke who already maintained position simillar to that one (or exactly that one if I am not mistaken).
All of them far more stronger then HRC. All of them have far more experience and broad knowledge of international issues, and all of them were very sucessfull.

I appreciate what you are saying Rick. I was born and raised during the Vince Lombardi days when the Green Bay Packers were winning all their championship games. And Mr Lombardi's son now gives talks on how you want a diverse group of people to be working with you. So I am right with you on this point.
Where I have a problem is that irresponsible comment Clinton made about obliterating Iran which I see is so aligned with her character.
Even if you reject this notion that Hillary is prone to a turrets sniper syndrome, this is the perception many Americans have with her and precisely why I devoted so many hours to campaign for Mr Obama.
We voted for Obama over Hillary precisely because of her stance on the war and the military complex. [have you seen the documentary- Why we Fight?]
Hillary's campaign as I understand it was backed by much military money. We gave Barack our money so that he would not have to take the military industrial complex's wish list.
Placing Hillary into the position of Secretary of State would indeed over throw the very reason why we elected Barack over Hillary.
Bill Richardson, is more in line with those that support Obama's agenda of getting out of the business of war.

It was so rewarding to make calls for this campaign. I made around well over 5000(they didn't all register).
I felt bad for some of the supporters here who felt nervous leading up to election day. The feedback I was getting from people I s/w was telling me we were in for a big day Nov 4th. There probably were some machinations at the polling places, but the numbers for Barack were too strong for it to make a difference.

It all began in 1957 when I was 18 and marched for Civil Rights for the first time and joined a small campaign at the University of Illinois to ensure that all students were treated equally by local businesses. I learned quite a bit about justice and organizing. I voted for John Kennedy in 1960 against my family's tradition. Following the Civil Rights movement Martin Luther King and John Lewis became my heroes. Years later I read in a magazine and saw the picture of a handsome young man, Barack Obama, who was now President of the Harvard Law Review. I was deeply touched that the "movement" had made a difference. In 1986 I began organizing local community collaboratives for a large PreKindergarten project I had started in suburban Illinois. Living in a community outside of Chicago I heard a great deal about Project Vote--terrific I thought. Then State Senator Obama became a strong advocate for children's health, childcare, and early childhood education. I learned his name for a new reason--not remembering he was that Harvard Law Review President or the Project Vote organizer. Then State Senator Obama was running for U.S. Senate--did I want to support him? Of course, I'll donate. How about a yard sign--sure. He gave the 2004 Democratic Convention speech and I wept as so many did. He was elected--Yeah! Then off to Tom Harkin's Annual Steak Fry in 2006 where Senator Obama was the Main Speaker. There were 4,000 people and Press everywhere--I could only weep. I bought a button--Barack Obama for President: Coming Soon! I wore it every day for six months until January when he announced his Campaign for the Presidency.I knew he would win--people kept asking was I sure--I was. I, SFT, immediately joined MyBO, donated, and began calling folks to attend rallies, register to vote, and volunteer. On Christmas Day 2007 I helped cook Christmas dinner for Obama campaign staff in Des Moines, IA at my son's house. They were 100 of the smartest and most thoughtful people I had ever met. New Year's Eve the Obama family celebrated at my son's home in Des Moines. The pictures of our son, his partner, and our daughter and the future President-Elect are treasurers on my screensaver. During the IA Caucus my son called and described the scene--he had never seen such a Caucus. Senator Barack Obama WON--I was always sure he would.

We were thrilled to join organizing events, sign making, post card writing, phone banking, voter registration, canvassing, debate watching, and so many other activities. We donated and donated. We put up yard signs, lost yard signs, put big home made signs in trees, and I kept calling. I am so proud of making more than 3500 calls. It was wonderful when our Cook County for Obama group learned that 91% of the registered voters in Cook County, MN voted and 61% voted for our President-Elect Barack Obama. As I look back over 50 years, I am incredibly touched that the strands of CHANGE hoped for so long ago are truly here in this day. Outstanding work, Sandra! I've always loved your shining HOPE on this blog!
I don't know how many calls I made. Way too many to count, but even still I don't know that it would be 3500 or 5000 (then again, over the past year, it could also be twice that or more--who knows!). But like you I was thrilled to learn that my precinct had about a 95% voter turn out, which is amazing, and here too Barack won 63% to 36%. In 2004, Kerry won our precinct by just four votes; in 2008, Barack won by well over 300. In the other precincts I worked, Barack more than doubled the votes Kerry received, and his votes greatly surpassed the total number of votes cast in 2004, for all presidential candidates. Needless to say, he won those precincts by about 75% to 25%. That's change we can believe in.
I wonder if your son is in any of the precincts I worked (67, 69, 74).
It has been a truly amazing thing witnessing this country wake up to the power of our own possibility, and I feel so fortunate to have had a front-row seat to it!

Great story.
So much of what we do cannot be quantified by the points system. How do you get points for talking to the lady at Sam's Club who is worried her Social Security won't be enough for her retirement? Or paying out of your own pocket to print out the tax comparison tables so the NEXT time you encounter someone with tax questions, you can pull the info out of the back of your DH's wheelchair? What about talking to the pharmacist who was for McCain until Palin was chosen to be on the ticket because he knew he was more qualified than she was for the post (and bringing him a button the next day)? How many of us have dropped off dinners at local HQs or made loaf after loaf of banana bread because our field organizers said it tasted like what his grandmother made (yes, Cameron, I mean you!). When your canvassers are dead on their feet but come back to a hot lunch; when no one else will sit in 105 degree heat to register voters; when the campaign needs lunch for 100 in an hour - who did these things?
WE DID!
And we'll keep on doing them.

While I would rather not see an administration with HRC and many of her associates, It's inevitable.
Please remember that while Barack will offer change, he is still a politician (and certainly one of the best).
For months, many of the Hillary supporters refused to come on board. Yes the convention did bring us "regular folks" together regardles of who we supported but behind the scenes her staunch supporters and well connected democrats still weren't on board. There's more to the outcome that most might think.
I'd bet my last name that Barack made a "deal" (for lack of a better term) not long after he won the nomination that Hillary would get what she wanted within reason. Hell most of the pundits said this would happen. Remember David Gergen saying so many times that Barack needed to reach out to Hillary/Bill and thier supporters. This is in part what he meant.
While I may not agree with it, this is how politics actually works. And this is also one of the reason there was "unity" at the convention. Arrangements were made in advance.
This is not as far-fetched as some might think; heck I've seen this myself many times over.
Like I said last night, I am not a HRC fan but I supported Bill Clinton in good times and bad. I don't hate the Clintons. I just personally believe that 20 years of the same two families (Bush's and Clintons')is more than enough.
Last but what's most important is if Barack feels that he wants/needs her, then we have to respect his decision.
For my family members like Debbie,Tammy,Sans, and others, IT WILL BE ALRIGHT.

I agree. Barack is a politician, as well as a public servant. I believe that meeting in Harlem with Bill also had some wheeling and dealing.
In the end, Barack beat Hillary, but she decided, cleverly, not to go quietly into the night. They are "fighters," remember? I believe she felt that if she couldn't win, she wasn't going to just recede into the Senate. There's nothing for her there - she too is just a junior Senator. So to survive, she had to find a way to latch herself onto the O-train. Her precious 18 million cracks was her leverage - and she knew it. That's why we heard about it over and over.
What to do with Hillary is a very complex decision for Obama, but one that he must address. I noticed that she had been eerily silent since election day.
This is politics right now, and it ain't pretty.

I hope it doesn't backfire either. I believe many who are so upset over this possibility are upset because they understand that if she is chosen, and if she accepts - this was not Obama's first choice. But I'm starting to believe that this is the best way for him to appease her and her supporters, and maintain some control over her, so that she cannot undermine him in a way that she just might do if she's not working in his administration.
On a side note - I remember thinking that if Obama were to lose, I didn't want him to be VP, I didn't want him to do anything accept go back to the Senate and do his thing. For me, Obama had to be President, or nothing at all. I had no desire to see him have a high position, just because.
Unfortunately, I believe many want Hillary in a high position just because. Her running for the Presidency was a plan that Hillary and her crew came up with early...probably when Bill was still President, and it seems to be very difficult for them to let go of the dream. I have no idea what is behind the compulsion.
Anyway, let's just see how it plays out. This is one of many "bad or worse" choices Obama must make. We need to get used to it.

I was telling my husband the same thing about politics, and sometimes you have have to play the game to make the change. That being said, we are lucky that we're given the chance to speak freely here, and I do think that some of what we say is passed on...may be wishful thinking, but now and then words have surfaced that reflected a responce to our joint concerns. and yes, I trust that Obama will do what he must do and he has all the facts and he'll make the smartest choice. I just really don't want to see Clinton in that role, even if it she did bring along some of Bills connections. My reasons are stated below.
I also can't see her as an attorney general, she's not ethical enough....honestly health care has been the one thing that I think she has been sincere about and not self serving, maybe that.
But why on earth do we owe her anything? That's the part of politics that I hate and the part that I think had kept many of us out of it for so long.

No, No, No. She does not need to be a health czar of any type. I don't know how old you are but apparently, you do not understand what Hillary did in 1993 with her health reform dictatorship. She refused to compromise with any differing factions and caused the Democrats to lose the control of congress after having it for 40 years--which is why we are suffering now. Her definition of Universal Health is that we are all required to buy health insurance from the companies that have made her the highest recipient of lobbying money of any politicians or have our wages garnished. This is not universal health care; this is more money for the insurance companies that she is indebted to.
She is not qualified for any position in the administration. If she really cared for people, she would have sometime over the last 8 year written a bill to address our awful health care system. She has not and has not even addressed why she hasn't done anything in the senate to help anyone but the Clintons. Research her record and you will see nothing but failure or positions given to her because of who she knows.

Let's review what the Clintons accomplished with healthcare in the '90's -
* SCHIP - Children's health insurance plan for families that do not qualify for Medicaid. Bill funded with 70B before leaving office. Came up for a vote under Bush & was supported on both sides of the aisle. Bush initially vetoed, but eventually funded with 5B. This is the prototype for Obama's universal coverage for children. Even with SCHIP, 10 million children remain uninsured.
* Small Business Health Insurance Reform - guaranteed issued health insurance for companies with less than 50 employees. Previously they were denied coverage. Even though it was a great victory, SB is still medically underwritten in most states. Premiums can raise as much as 600% in PA for example.
* HIPAA - protecting both privacy & portability. Allowing people who lost their group benefits to get individual health insurance regardless of pre-existing conditions. Began the movement towards unified administration across insurance companies and states. Biggest reform in health care since Medicare.
* Medicare + Choice - continued funding for Medicare and allowed Managed Care companies to compete. Introduced Risk Adjusters to adjust Federal reimbursement based on higher utilization of sicker people vs. Federal rates being paid simply on zip codes and counties. Came to fruition under Bush. Could be a model for universal health care.
* PACE - Program for All-inclusive Care for the Elderly. Modelled on Ted Kennedy's CLASS model. Allows elderly who are disabled to remain living in their homes and brings the healthcare to them.
Here's why it needs to be UNIVERSAL:
* 25% of the uninsured die younger & sooner than the insured.
* 50% bankruptcies due to healthcare costs.
* 47M uninsured swell to 74 MILLION when in-between jobs - hello! It's the economy, stupid!
* Top 5 reasons for hospital admissions - diabetes, congestive heart failure, asthma, low birth rate, pneumonia. All preventable & treatable with routing doctor visits.
* We are paying for the uninsured with rising group premiums. Health insurance companies pay into a risk pool.
* Healthcare costs will continue to rise - aging of the population, cost for technology, increased Rx costs.
Hillary is the person for Health & Human Services. Nobody understands it as well as she does. UNIVERSAL or bust! After LBJ (Medicare & Medicaid) the Clintons shoved through the most aggressive healthcare reform.

hillary urging her supporters is nothing new so why are we all acting like she did something extraordinaire. granted it's great she did but it's a given or she would have risked being branded in the party. besides hillary or her supporters probably could not live with herself or themselves with an option like mccain-palin. uurrgghh! she did what any decent human being would have done. howard dean had to put a lot of work into urging his supporters too 4 years ago though not as publicized and dramatized as this time around.

I keep remembering during the Primary debates in particular one of the debates where Hillary would not let go of the Health Care Issue. She kept coming back again and again on it. Barack did not believe that the Universal Health Care she was pushing was the best plan since he did not think it would pass through to get legislated and involved an insurance mandate. He thought we need to go from where we are now and add to what we have available to get it through. She also didn't let go of her way when her husband was in the WH and it has been said she isn't inclusive and is dictatorial so she puts off people and doesn't get things passed. So I am not sure being in charge of health care is the best place for her either.

On foreign policy, those who voted for barack, did that because of him offering dialogue and diplomacy instead of arrogance and cowboy attitude. Certainly there are great choices in line with barack on that approach, Samantha Power and Susan Rice are both in total harmony with such approach and even if we want a more experienced hand with negotiation skills, Bill Richardson seems appropriate, he even negotiated with Saddam. We should be looking at qualifications not politic, election is over! Just my opinion!

No worries here! PE Obama will be alright. Some folks have their faves and want to be vocal in their support.
This is just like the VP sweepstakes. Everyone has an opinion. There is a chorus of no HRC or any one of her "surrogates". Whatever. My personal fave for VP was Gov. Kaine or Gov. Schweitzer (sp?), so I was a little disappointed when it was Joltin' Joe that was selected. But I got over that (really quick recovery), and then realized that Joltin' Joe was a huge asset to this campaign. He layed some good ground work with his stump speeches in many small towns in battleground states.
My point is, folks are gonna be pissed one way or another. PE Obama cannot please all the 64M folks that voted for him every single time (nor should he try). He has to make decisions based on what is best for our country.

hello old friends,
regarding the discussions about Clinton as SOS, I hope that doesn't happen. One of the big reasons that I was on board with Obama from the start was his foriegn policy and respect for all people and all nations. I just don't see H. Clinton as having that, and that is not something that you can teach, or mandate in a preseidential possition, it's a natural position form the heart and the mind that comes accorss in the samllest of gestures even more then in the spoken message. Clinton would not put the face of Obama on our international relations.
Linda, regarding women, I grew up in saudi arabia and I served in the military here, I know about women and national as well as international challenges, that beinmg said, as a representative of the U.S. I think that they would respect a female just as much. The middle eastern countries don't mind power, and even liberal sexualism for other women, it's just their own that they don't wnat falunting it, kinda like a protective, controlling do as I say not as I do thing.
I do agree stringly that Kerry would be MUCH better and more inline with Obamas message.
Remember ablitherate Iraq comment by Clinton, that wasn't that long ago, and her tone is just who she is.

Election spurs 'hundreds' of race threats, crimes
By JESSE WASHINGTON, AP National – 1 hr 7 mins ago
Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.
Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.
From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.
There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.
One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.
She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

I have no doubt that what Barack is obsessing about, even as he fills staff positions, is the U.S. and world economy, and the jobs, homes and general well-being of Americans.
He wants to get moving on that right off the hop, and in a big way, because recession-cum-Depression is now a much bigger threat than terrorists or the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Barack has said that "fixing the plumbing", i.e., the U.S. economy, is Job 1. If the "plumbing" doesn't work, nothing works. Americans, first of all, have to eat and have a place to sleep. Guns and all the rest come second.
I know Barack has to assemble his people around him first, but the economy is in such a mess and going down so fast, it's almost tragic that Barack can't get going on it right now.
World leaders are looking to Obama now more than ever to lead them in a global economic recovery; they are not looking to Bush Jr. Bush Jr. is not only a "lame duck" until Jan. 20/09, he's been a lame duck since his inauguration and is handing Barack an economic disaster that even his two terms might not be able to clean up completely.
Assist the Big 3 U.S. auto companies? Yes, but with conditions and oversight, unlike the Wall Street bailout, in which tens of billions have been wasted on acquisitions and CEO bonuses, with nil improvement in the credit market. At least the auto companies produce a tangible and vital commodity; that they produced gas-guzzlers was only their logical response to the U.S. market that existed until gas went to $4 a gallon.
Bush Jr.'s $10-trillion national debt will have to go up until Obama's pump-priming, such as extending unemployment benefits, assisting homeowners pay down the mortgage and creating WPA-type jobs is complete. When the economy starts to move up again is the time to think about debt reduction (for the sake of future generations).

There was present...

Barack Obama's election as the 44th President has inspired me like no leader that has come before him.
In 1961 - when I was 6 years old - my family took me on a tour of the White House. I ran down a hallway (away from the tour) and peered through a crack in a folding screen that was set up to block a doorway. President John F. Kennedy was seated on a couch in a majestic, sun-filled room reading a newspaper.
That vision and feeling of awe has been with me since that day. I can still close my eyes 47 years later and see that scene. I have that same feeling when I see President-elect Obama.
Here's a "Yes We Can" inspirational poster that I was inspired to put together. I think it turned out quite well. I hope you like it.

This being the case, I went to work for the second largest employer in the U.S. and, found that the health care premiums/deductibles were too expensive. LOL For giggles, I looked up the costs of individual health care plans from other sources.
What a joke!
I found I'd be better off socking away a few hundred dollars (at below proverty level wages) a month. The rest is highway robbery. $500/mo premiums to pay from $3000-$10000 a year deductibles?

I was rushed to the Veterans Hospital on Veterans Day (what did I do wrong). I was first cared for by African Americans Then Asian Americans had an emergency operation with the help of Middle East Americans and Native Americans with the help of White Americans. I am now home with the help of Americans for Americans. Now that we have melted that melting pot lets put another pot on the fire and make Health Care for every American. And yes maybe their was some bells and whistles missing in my care but it was more than made up for in Halos and Hearts...

First of all, S.H. (may I call you Strong?), I'm really glad you're OK. The blog would not have been the same without you.
I think most veterans enjoy at least adequate care. You were fortunate enough to have great care.
Let's work for all our veterans ensuring that they too have the same positive experience.

The Iraqi cabinet has approved a security pact with the US governing the future presence of 150,000 US troops in the country, officials have said.
Under the deal US troops will withdraw from the streets of Iraqi towns next year, leaving Iraq by the end of 2011.

well....actually obama said combat forces...he never said we'd ever get out completely, tho i think from what i'm seeing and hearing that as soon as we begin the drawdown violence will increase and we will either have to withdraw completely (which i'm all for) or keep 'peace-keeping forces' in place.
and they haven't YET approved it, it's just passed by the cabinet, and still has to pass parliament (the council of representatives). so it COULD still fail....but it's doubtful.

I read Strong Heart's post about health care and the United Nations flavor of the care your received.
I was raised in an area I returned to with my own children, a "teaching hospital" and a university surrounding it.
Our residents come from all over the world. My parents had friends from China, Korea, India, Russia, Africa.
My mother, as a college librarian, had to learn the articles "The" and "A" in about thirty languages so she could search for a book by its title.
While we lived a VERY modest life (i.e. powdered milk, waiting for a winter coat until Christmas, you know the drill), we were wealthy with friendships and experiences. I NEVER felt deprived, I always felt fortunate, and I returned to raise my children in this multi-cultural society.
When my husband and I retire we'll look at a college town again. New York City is too crowded for us but there's nothing like a college town to bring in a pool of interesting people!

"...The Obama-Biden foreign policy will end the war in Iraq responsibly, finish the fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, secure nuclear weapons and loose nuclear materials from terrorists, and renew American diplomacy to support strong alliances and to seek a lasting peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
SPECIFIC PLAN DETAILS ARE THERE AS WELL:

The transparency Obama promised? He's delivering.
We currently have two "branding" issues between the incoming Obama administration and the outgoing Campaign.
I believe they'll develop an incorporation of the two sites, at least on the surface - what we see.
There are also two sides to the Obama news: the first, sort of a "People Magazine" version of news, with information on how many babies are being named Obaam and the other the "New York Times" level of news, which transcends the chatters and gets to the nuts and bolts of running the country and delivering on campaign promises.
Both have their value. Support the Change site with viewership so you're up on the talking points for Thanksgiving! (smile)

Hillary always will have Secret Service as a former first lady, not to mention her husband, assuming they are sometimes in the say place.
I think Hillary has the job if she wants it. Barack can't say no at this point. I wonder if the "leak" of SOS was deliberate to get reaction or to show that Barack is trying to reach out to Hillary's supporters.
However, these blogs never seem to discuss the possibility that Hillary may turn down the offer for SOS after she thinks it through. Certainly she loves the attention of being considered.
Why should Hillary want to be SOS for a few years and give up being Senator from NY for the rest of her life (say two terms + 4 years = 16 years)?
At best she would be SOS for 8 years, but that is very unlikely and I don't think there is much precedence. Would she then run for President at age 68? That would be a drag if she would be using SOS as a stepping stone to run for President again. And it would be hard for Obama to "let her go" as SOS.
There is always the possibility for Hillary to accept the offer and then have Barack name her to the Supreme Court, when an opening would occur. Then Hillary could say she has done everything except POTUS.

Ugh...I can't stand when people say Hillary should be a SCOTUS Justice.
She is not a legal scholar. She's never been a judge. She's never been a constitutional lawyer. She hasn't practiced law in many, many years. She's never written any legal opinions.
Hillary is great and all, but she's not perfect and she can't do everything. SCOTUS is out of the question.

The "media" says she wouldn't want to be SC Judge because she likes to be her own person, not the bottom of a 9 person club.
However, now that it is likely that she will be SOS if she says Yes (a position she will likely be successful at - with the help of her husband), it should also be discussed - What Next?
I can't see Hillary being SOS for 8 years, nor can I see Obama "firing" her. Also, it is normal to choose a SC Judge who is younger.
So the problem is that while it may be a good decision to choose her for SOS, I don't see any other good exit strategy. Obama is someone who thinks things out carefully.
At least Obama and Hillary see things eye-to-eye on Judicial decisions. There are likely to be 2-3 SC appointments in the next 8 years.

Obama and I see eye-to-eye on SC decisions too, that doesn't mean I'm qualified.
I'm an attorney. I went to law school. I had to take con law. Justices are scholars. They are deep thinkers of the law and have a breadth of knowledge about constitutional law that they cultivate throughout a career.
I don't believe she graduated with any distinction from law school. I don't believe she practiced law on a federal level. I'm sure she hasn't been a judge, or required to decide, interpret, and write her reasoning regarding constitutional issues. Not to mention she's way too political and having her on there would create the appearance of the SCOTUS being a hyper political part of the government, which is completely against what the Founders intended.
To be honest, Obama is more qualified than she is to be a SCOTUS Justice, and I still think he wouldn't get confirmed.

I had an epiphany this morning. Or, perhaps a caffeine enduced idea?
I don't pretend to have long-term spectacular solutions. It did occur to me, today, that the auto industry could be the beginning of a change movement with healthcare. Since a tremendous cost burden carried by employers is health benefits, could a 'bailout' option for the auto industry be moving employee healthcare to a government plan (perhaps modeled after what congress receives)? Rather than just throwing money at the industry, our government would assist by removing that burden and, in the short perhaps long term, show the rest of the country that National Healthcare Reform could be one of the first steps to ease us out of the current financial crisis.
Crazy idea, right?

Re: Health Care
The first problem is to identify why America has the most expensive health care in the world. Other countries have far superior universal health care at much lower cost. I suspect it is because the health care industry has been allowed to run riot thanks to its powerful lobbying forces.
I also think there is a real need to take it out of the hands of profit seekers (who like the banks are seeking too much profit) & simplify it by making it universal health guaranteed for all. I am very much on Hilary's side there. At this stage there are too many forces on care givers to maximise care because that way profit lies rather than giving the best care.

I have said this before. Helath care is part of the financial crisis and should be seen and acted upon as such. The reason why we are unable to compete with other countries or companies moving shop overseas i.e. canada is the high cost of labor which Health care is a big chunk.
I think we need to retool GM, CHRysler, and Ford to make mass transit transportation i.e. high speed rails and locomotives, Buses, ferries etc.

We have had varied opinions on what has been reported in the press about many things concerning President-elect Obama's picks thus far. I say chill out. Take what they (the MSM) tell us and temper it with what we know (Team Obama's approach). Although Senator Clinton may very well be the Secretary of State; we must put it in perspective. First, it is the media reporting it so take it with a grain of salt. But, let's look at President-elect Obama's leadership skills (what we know). Recall, in the primaries, he knew almost exactly which states he would win and in the general election, again, they knew which states they would win and those they could win. The “would” wins put them over 270 electoral votes and the “could” wins would turn it into a rout.
I am saying this to say, most of what is reported is speculation. But, if it is true give the team some credit for always having projected insight into each decision they have made. They have made decisions which have attested to their thought process being the envy of any right think group or person. Many times we (the bloggers) wanted the campaign to assault both Senators Hillary and McCain in response to the dirty attacks. His approach turned out to be what the people wanted. Now, we have still some disagreement with issues such as FISA but, even there we can see some merit. But, I still say let’s wait and see how that (FISA) plays out.
President-elect Obama has been right so far I, for one, will just chill out and trust in his process.

If Hillary were to publicly reject the SOS offer, that would be ideal. As Chris Matthews and others have said, there could be discussions about naming Staff and Ambassadorships. Hillary might demand all her "own" people, which would not be good.

Although it is the only thing that worries me, that's why I like the fact that President-Elect Barack Obama has the wisdom to analyze all of that. (That's why I haven't run for president!)

One thing about Hillary being SOS can be agreed upon, is that she would be great at "nation building" (with Bill Clinton being an asset).
"Nation building" should have been the #1 foreign policy reason to elect Obama over McCain, but noone was listening. Instead they said Obama didn't have FP experience and should just stick to The Economy.
Obama understands the best way to solve FP problems is to get the support of most of the world, just as Bush #1 understood. Hillary would certainly succeed, but it may only be a job that would last 2-3 years, not 8 years.
I think it is fair to criticize the media for not discussing all aspects of what Hillary would do after a few years. It is responsible journalism to point out that SOS's don't usually stay more than a few years.
It is also worth mentioning that by going this route, Obama is demonstrating how confident he is in himself, to allow the Clinton's to dominate news by being SOS. In most ways I think it is a great move for Barack. If our FP is successful, Obama doesn't care if the Clinton's get credit.

Barack can say no and I sincerely hope that he does. Hillary is not qualified to be SOS. Having lunch and teas with first wives does not make you able to be chief diplomat. There are plenty of confirmed stories of her meanness, vindictiveness, and unwillingness to compromise (review health reform fiasco). She even stiffed hard working Americans all along her campaign route--some who had to sue her to receive their monies. This is not a qualified candidate.
Obama did not make her a hard offer. The offer has been debunked by Obama's transition team. Hopefully, Obama will not be convinced to pick her as an obligation. She did not come out to campaign for him until she saw that he was winning in the polls. She was giving McCain advice for the debates.
Now, she trots out Kissinger who is wanted for war crimes in other countries to say that she would be a good SOS. That reference alone should eliminate her from consideration.

The reason Republicans can't start talking about building roads, creating jobs, etc. is that Democrats are doing that. If Republicans adopt those positions, then they're Democrats.
Democrats have to just fix this mess. Then things will get better and the Republican ideology with be palatable again, and they will try again.
They're going to be in the wilderness for a while though while we clean this economy and our foreign affairs up.

It seems interesting that many Republicans and hawks are liking this rumor. That is disappointing to me. One of the main things I liked about Obama is his nuanced way of looking at foreign policy, and Hillary seems to be out of touch with that. But, I must remind myself that she'll be HIS employee and she'll have to conform to HIS vision, which I suppose she is capable of.
As you can tell, I'm preparing myself for her to be named. This is a very tough pill to swallow, so I'm chopping it up and swallowing it little by little, and trusting that this pill will be good for me.

If you are against the current Bail Out plan, you can easily contact all your representatives in one fell swoop.
I just wrote the following to mine - see the link below and you can do the same:
"We just learned that in a conference call a Bank CEO plans to use the Bail Out money given to them for loans to buy up more banks instead of providing loans as promised.
The banks' reporting was due, and now, past due.
Why put out the Welcome Mat for foxes at the Chicken Coop Door? Why is not only the door unlocked but left wide open?
I suggest the following:
1. Banks draft a contract proposal, in writing, with a step by step plan, with milestones for money
2. Representatives must accept their proposal
3. NO money is given to them unless they reach and report and are confirmed for the expenditure in the contracted milestone.
When banks loan money to others this is what they expect. We should expect the same of them.
It is criminal negligence to use the American Taxpayer as a victim, the majority of whom strongly disagree with this blase handover of all our money.

i'm agnostic on the bailout at the moment. i want to know what gm's profits are like in latin america and china first. but let's remember who GM is. they put out the humvee. that was a rolling FU sign on wheels to any concern about the environment or conservation. it's beyond ironic that a company that put forth a message of "me first" and "i don't care what you think" is now rattling their tin cup and begging for charity.

I believe it could be Chris Dodd or Kerry.
Here are the members:

Many of us would like to see Kerry as SOS and certainly he is the most qualified on paper.
However, Hillary seems to have the job if she wants it, and she would be pretty effective too (though for other reasons).
However, I don't hear anyone in the media mentioning Kerry becoming Chair of the SFRC (the media has its own agenda). That position is the most powerful FP position in Congress as Joe Biden has proven.
I would love to see Kerry have that Chair. I wonder if Dodd is in line for that spot? I would much rather see Kerry get that spot. That is the sort of politics that is probably going on behind the scenes. Dodd was also great for Obama, but he is better for Economy.

That would be nice. I feel bad for Kerry, but this is politics and I'm sure Obama has mentioned the possibility of naming Hillary as SOS a while ago.
I'm realizing that leaking this Hillary as SOS was to get people thinking about it and getting used to the idea. If he kept it secret and then just announced it, it would have been really crazy. But now, every day people can mull it over, dissect it, discuss it, and so when she's named officially - it's just confirming what we all knew.

i like this signal:
One of the themes I've been trying to push lately is that the success of Obama's presidency is dependent on his ability to navigate an increasingly dysfunctional Congress, and that the ability to pass bills through the institution requires pretty fair knowledge of how it works and pretty good relationships with the key players. Clinton didn't have that. He entered office and showed very little respect for congressional expertise, surrounding himself with trusted associates from Arkansas and young hotshots from his campaign.
Obama is not making the same mistake. He's surrounded himself with Gephardt and Daschle advisers, elevated Rahm Emanuel to chief of staff, and just named
Phil Schiliro
to be the administration's point person on legislative affairs. Schirilo was previously Henry
Waxman
's chief of staff, and as Marc Ambinder says, was "known as one of the savviest, smartest chiefs of staffs in DC." He also served as policy director to Tom Daschle

If Barack Obama does win the election tomorrow, it will be in considerable measure because he managed to teach Sarah Palin what a Community Organizer is capable of.
Namely, in this case, it would be organizing enough people to send her back to her community.

Nov 16th 2008 at 1:14 pm EST (Updated Nov 16th 2008 at 1:14 pm EST)
News Three was the first to tell you Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss had been subpoenaed by Savannah Attorney Mark Tate in the case against Imperial Sugar.
Tate, who represents families of the deceased, subpoenaed Chambliss because he believes Chambliss has pertinent information for the case.
In a News Three follow-up, we've gotten word that Chambliss' lawyer is moving to quash the subpoena.
Tate says attorneys for Chambliss claim he has immunity because he's a U.S. Senator.
"Our clients have said to reporters that they have felt like he was trying to influence them and dissuade them from filing lawsuits. That's the kind of activity a U.S. Senator does not enjoy privilege to conduct," explains Tate.
We were unable to reach Senator Chambliss' Office for comment.
***Sounds like Chambliss thinks he's above the law.

I'm not sure yet-but it could have something to do with this:
The day of reckoning appears to be nearing for Imperial Sugar. The company's Savannah sugar refinery exploded in February, killing 13 people and injuring scores more. Three-workers remain hospitalized. Today, after a nearly six-month investigation, officials from the Occuaptional Safety and Health Administration issued their findings and proposed fines.
If they stick, the fines would be the third-largest in OSHA history: $5 million for alleged violations at the Imperial Sugar refinery in Savannah and another $3 million for violations at the company's refinery in Gramercy, Louisiana. Many of these violations relate to a build-up of combustible sugar dust. OSHA Assistant Secretary Edwin Foulke expressed outrage over what he called Imperial Sugar's "complete disregard" for its workers' safety.
"Imperial Sugar managers had been repeatedly informed of serious combustible dust hazard at the facility as early as 2002," Faulke says. "While the company took steps to determine what hazards were there, they took no reasonable action to fix the problems."
In all, OSHA found 120 violations at the Savannah refinery, including 61 "egregious" violations. The agency says, the refinery had electrical hazards, fall hazards, machine guarding hazards and poor housekeeping related to combustible dust. OSHA's regional director Cindy Coe says excess dust fueled the deadly blast.

U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss has been ordered to provide evidence in lawsuits stemming from the Feb. 7 Imperial Sugar Co. explosion and fire. The Republican lawmaker was subpeonaed Wednesday on behalf of four victims - two dead and two injured - of the Port Wentworth inferno that killed 14 and hurt scores of others.
Savannah attorney Mark Tate says Chambliss might be part of an Imperial "effort to shift responsibility" away from the company.Imperial Sugar Plant Explosion Click here to read about the Sugar Plant explosion as well as view photos and video.
The lawsuits, which Tate filed on behalf of the four victims and others, claim Imperial "wrongfully" failed to remove hazards that caused the disaster.
The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration reached nearly the same conclusion. It is seeking to fine Imperial $8.8 million for safety violations at Port Wentworth and at its plant in Gramercy, La. The company is appealing.
Tate says he thinks Imperial enlisted Chambliss to help "denigrate the reputation" and "bias the Chatham County jury pool" against Graham H. Graham, Imperial Sugar's vice president for operations.
Graham said at a July Senate hearing that the company stymied his efforts to make the plants safer. At the hearing, Chambliss, who in 2007 received $1,000 from Imperial's political committee, badgered Graham and questioned the Imperial executive's sincerity.
The subpoena orders Chambliss to testify under oath Thursday at Tate's office. It also tells him to produce papers and e-mails provided to him by Imperial, related companies and Imperial's law firm.
Tate also said Chambliss attended meetings with two of his clients and top Imperial officials, including President and CEO John Sheptor. The clients' "impression" was that they were told "it would be better to let the government handle the matter than to litigate," Tate said.
Sheptor denies discouraging Graham from trying to make the plants safer and says Graham "exaggerated" at the hearing to divert blame from himself.

Maybe it is the detailed-oriented types that go there are read Nate Silver.
Of importance is the talk (Chris Bowers Blog) about Hillary not getting her way in the Senate on Health Care as a possible influence to accept SOS.
Also, they discuss in detail "what next" for Hillary, if she accepted SOS, because it is agreed she probably wouldn't stay more that 6 years as SOS (George Schultz lasted 7 years under Reagan).
Anyway, its time to get back to work. Enough fun for today speculating.

Now that the elections are over and the right man for the job won, I am sincerely hoping, requesting on behalf of two fine Border Patrol Agents, their children and comrades, that President Elect Obama please pardon
Agent Ramos
and
Agent Compean
These brave men were wrongly convicted in federal court by one of Bushs henchman Federal Prosecutor johnny sutton of San Antonio. They were protecting our country, our border, they encountered an illegal who was bringing many pounds of dope into the country. In the struggle the agents fired in self defense.
The Bush administration worked nonstop to go to Mexico, locate the drug dealer shot in the buttocks, give him immunity, bring him back to the US and testify against these good men. Bush made sure johnny sutton prosecuted and put these men away for many years, while letting the drug dealer go, and paying him alot of money.
Bush was sent millions of petitions requesting he pardon these men, and he snubbed them. He was more concerned about appeasing Mexico, rather than doing the right thing. The prosecutor used a law made for use against mob crimes and gang crimes on these agents, therefore the jury had no leway in sentencing.
Bush, did these heroes dirty, we are asking President Elect Obama to consider the millions of petition signatures, and free these men.
This is another example of Bush being hateful, and arrogant against a majority of Americans who demanded he release these wrongly convicted agents.
Please Pardon
Agents Ramos and Compean, send them back to their wives and kids where they belong. They have been faithful servants to their country, and served with valor and dedication.

Hillary for Secretary of State |

As a Clinton supporter who then supported Barack Obama, I am just sick to read the posts that his supporters are making ridiculing her. Her embellishment of Bosnia wasn't near the big story that Barack Obama told about his parents meeting in Selma - 4 years after he was born.
Perhaps it would do everyone a bit of good to take a step back and trust that Barack Obama will put the most qualified person in the Sec of State job - and from where I sit, that is Hillary Clinton.
There are a couple things everyone should remember.
1) Barack Obama won the nomination - not from the voters but from the Superdelegates, many after he had contributed to their campaigns.
2) You would do well to remember that without Hillary and Bill Clinton, Barack Obama just might not have been the president-elect because their campaigning in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida brought those states into his column.
I really didn't think Barack Obama supporters could be as nasty as some I have read here. I have fully supported him and now I am just disgusted reading these remarks. What happened to the unity that he and Hillary wanted? I don't think you are truly supporters to say the mean spirited things you are saying.
By the way, when Hillary was asked a question as to "what would you do if Iran attacked Israel?", Hillary did say she would obliterate them. Hillary always supported the Jewish community and that support was why Barack Obama won Florida - so put your claws back in your pocket and give Barack Obama some credit for making the best choice for his administration.

I feel compelled to reply to your last paragraph which I find troubling. For clarity let me paste it to follow:
By the way, when Hillary was asked a question as to "what would you do if Iran attacked Israel?", Hillary did say she would obliterate them. Hillary always supported the Jewish community and that support was why Barack Obama won Florida - so put your claws back in your pocket and give Barack Obama some credit for making the best choice for his administration.
Too often we hear this type of loose talk about a war with Iran. I'm going to call it like it is and anxiously await your reply. The entire world is faced with an economic catastrophe which mandates that all nations must take the diplomatic path to resolution of crises. So you can take your claws and put them back into your pocket.
Give thanks! |

My fellow DEMS and Obama-Biden admirers,
The controversy surrounding H. Clinton as Sec. of State is a moot point; simply consider the travesty to our Republic had the GOP won the national election! Perhaps Eliz. Dole for this post (ugh)?
The point is to pick the most competent person for the position, not the most controversial...
Cheers, carpe diem, and blessings to our new Administration.

The Auto industry has sat on its patents with no action since "Tucker" and have lost all credibility. We should pass a law that all patents that have not become products after 5 years should be open to public use in the United States, with no penalty. I believe that this would give us a whole new healthy automobile manufacturing industry!

The so called birth certificate that we have seen, is not a birth cerificate it is a Cerification of live birth.
Also, Obama's father would of been Nergo or Black, not African.
So where is the real birth certificate?
How come he won't produce it?
