Mr. Schweitzer, a farmer and rancher, is credited with energizing Democrats in the state and raised his national profile in August with a speech at the Democratic National Convention that drew prolonged cheers.
I like Gov. Brian Schweitzer--only problem, he was just re-elected.
Montana also brought Barack Obama within 2.5% spread during the election.
I want our elected Democrats to stay put(both local and federal)--especially those that were either recently elected or with numerous years left at their post.

Yes he is great, and when it comes to Energy...he knows his stuff. He has done so much for Montana recently, and that is why it would be hard to see him go. He works across party lines, and his Lt. Gov is a Republican. And Montana is a leader in alternative fuels. And for exploring new ideas. We have wind, solar, oil, and coal going for us. Which I am really supportive (even oil and coal) if its done with reguards to the environment and land management. Anything that keeps the middle east out of Washington's back pocket is forward thinking.

I hope Obama names his Treasury Secretary very and has only one criteria for doing it. He needs to select the person most able to get us out of the current financial crisis and get the economy moving again. I hope that if he thinks Larry Summers is that person that he will not be disuaded from picking him because of his unfortuate comment about women when he was president of Harvard. I assume that he regrets that and we should give him the opportunity of geting us out of this hole if Obama thinks that he is the best person to do it. We need the brightest and the best in every postion now.

My suggestions: I know that some are not pleased with the Clinton name being mentioned as part of the cabinet. How about this. Instead of venting against them, why not use this blogsite to send special requests to them. Write a Dear H or B Clinton mini request letter(keep it clean). Tell the Clintons what you want them to do. What kind of 'changes' you want them to embrace.
Part of this blog and democracy(civic duty) is for different viewpoints to be expressed. Since the Clintons will never disappear(wish of a few supporters), why not use this chance to help them adjust to a different type/style of politics. Remember, Bill Clinton was one of the youngest pol elected in Arkansas. Practically WJC's entire career has been in public service. He is use to a certain style of politics. He has been around a certain group for decades. HRC has adopted some of those tactics. Since I am a die-hard Democrat, I want the healing to begin. We have a huge Bush-mess to clean up.
Type a Dear Hill/Bill letter. Give them constructive advice.

Every media station and pundit is weighing in on this decision. They say it is "restorative." It is a "gesture" from the Obama camp "healing" campaign wounds. "Everybody" agrees she should be chosen. I say if Obama wants to mend scars he should send her flowers.
Appointing Senator Clinton is a bad idea. If the President-elect is truly for change he needs someone who supports that and so far Clinton has held true to business as usual.
This is not a discussion about Clinton's experience. She has plenty. It is about the differences between these two individuals, the differences between their stated foreign policy and Obama's promise for change.
Clinton is a member of the establishment. She has transformed herself into one of the best politicians in recent memory. The result was a very formidable bid for the Presidency, but let's face it: she did not win. America elected Obama and change.
The repeated debates between these two candidates clearly showed one area where she and Obama differed tremendously. That area is foreign policy.
She supported the Iraq war, he is against it. Clinton was unapologetic about voting for the war despite pleas from her own constituency to admit it was a mistake. Alternatively, she took a hard stance and further disagreed with Obama's idea of withdrawal.
Under no circumstances does Clinton want to speak with Iran. Obama, on the other hand, stated that he felt speaking to Iran was a requirement for getting them past their nuclear weapons ambitions. Her policy ironically is to use ours on them if they did not submit to US demands.
Further, Clinton has said nothing of changing policy toward Afghanistan and Pakistan, two issues that were central to Obama's foreign policy platform. Nor has she commented on how to move beyond either war toward a more sustainable peace.
She has shown through her own statements that she is definitely more hawkish than he is. I wonder if she can stand down when he says so.
Appointing Clinton Secretary of State is not what the US needs especially when it is trying to repair its relationships in the world, end two wars and get the Middle East peace process back on track.
With Clinton America will be back to implementing the same international policies we see today. A policy that is pentagon heavy and diplomatically light. A policy that is internally fractured and divisive

Agreed, sarin.
No one is saying Hillary is Bill. Sarin's points are about Hillary's stances--not about any of Bill's opinions. After all, she has been the more relevant politician for the last 4 years. We're talking about her significantly different philosophy of foreign policy that she made pretty clear during her presidential run as well as her career in the Senate.
Unless the latest 'news' that supposedly comes straight from an Obama aide are just rumors, it looks like he's appointing her. And while I can imagine his reasons, I wonder why she is not being considered for something else. The SoS needs to share the president's basic stance on foreign policy. He/she needs to be trusted to be able to negotiate and build relationships on behalf of the president--not just for themselves. I'm not dissing Hillary's views; I'm just saying that she has not shown that she can gel with Obama's ideas whatsoever, and even if she acquiesced, you don't want someone in that role who is just doing duty and doesn't have clear drive that is going to work for the president's agenda.
There are so many other people who would be better qualified for this position, too. I have to say that I'm disappointed, but trust that Obama and his team have weighed all the cons.

CHICAGO (AP) — Many women recoil at the thought of baring their arms in sleeveless dresses or blouses, but not Michelle Obama — half of the fabulously fit new first couple.
Both President-elect Barack Obama and the future first lady have exercise routines that would put most people to shame. Michelle Obama used to join a friend for 4:30 a.m. workouts, and Barack Obama usually starts his day in the gym.
Michelle Obama has hosted "The View," been interviewed on "60 Minutes," graced the cover of Newsweek and hit the campaign trail, all with her buff arms bared.
"One of the things I always talk about is got to exercise," the 44-year-old mother of two told an overwhelmingly female crowd at a campaign event last year in Chicago.
That's sure to continue when the Obamas and their girls — 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha — move into the White House, which has plenty of places for them to stay active.

I have been reserving judgement on this blog about Obama's pick of HRC for SoS. I initially thought it was a good thing and was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. I appreciated the fact that she threw her support behind Obama at the Convention and that she campaigned for him.
However, the NYT article today was the final straw for me. How dare she or Bill or their people try to box Obama in and force him to offer her SoS. Given all the events of the past few days, it's a clear indication to me that Clintons always come with drama.
Keep her in the Senate, she can work on Teddy's subcommittee and he can keep an eye on her.
I really was willing to see her as a good asset and have argued on Huffpo that she was a good choice. But now, I've had it---leopards do not change their spots. She would always be competing for the limelight and would create her own fiefdom at State.
Don't do it Obama. Shut this down while you can. I know you had great intentions and it really could have worked. But there is too much drama and too much division over this. If HRC really wants to do something other than Senate, she can run for Gov. of NY. Cut the Clintons loose and vanquish them.
Ugh---I had resisted taking this position and was trying to see the positive in her choice. But, this is my opinion. I'll be quiet about it after this, but I wanted to finally go on record about it. Sorry to those of you who are fed up with the topic! :-) But I can assure you this is the first and last time I will comment on it (unless of course some of you respond to this post and then of course I will respond as well to your comments.)

But this drama with HRC doesn't bode well. I hope he'll shut it down in the next day or two and just say they weren't able to vet her.
I'd love to see a nonpolitico get SoS who is a genuine thinker and academic in foreign policy now. Or someone respected by academia who is a practionner. Holbrooke is very respected abroad. Maybe he should get it.
But we just don't need HRC drama. Cut her loose!

From the beginning I felt that this did not sound right and was concerned by the Media pushing this subject. I truly believe that it is indeed the Clintons Circle pushing for this position to trap Barack and force him to give it to her but everytime I hear the topic discussed by the media - I immediately say that this not so at all and just mind Games to create confusion just as they were doing during the campaign. It is All pschological Mind Games. It will Not work - Not this Time. It is Barack's Time and His turn to Role the Dice and not the Clintons to hold him to Ransome with their Game. Any other position is okay except this High Position as she will be undermining Barack all the times to push herself in the forefront.

Hi Nanci! How great to see your post. I have not read the blog in the past week and just today got on.
I totally agree with you about HRC. This drama crap and all the leaks are not coming from the Obama team...it has NEVER been their M.O. I remember the same maddening and disruptive drama that the Clinton camp stirred up about the veep choice. This smells like the same bad fish. My personal opinion (influenced by my preference, of course) is that this drama will only push Obama AWAY from choosing HRC. He is on record as not wanting this kind of drama, and as being intolerant of this manipulative leaking. I would be surprised if he actually chose her, and would assume he has a grander plan than we can be aware of...otherwise it would be so unlike his administrative style and strengths.
p.s. I commented on this leak about HRC and SOS at the end (of course, ironically) of the previous thread, and how Andrea Mitchell was being touted every five seconds as getting "the get" from two anonymous Obama aids (there are about 700 aids, btw). It started to sound like it was more about Andrea Mitchell than HRC. I am so glad that Obama has already started the process of connecting to the public directly via the net, without the MSM filter...it must be driving the MSM nuts and making them feel threatened as the 4th branch of the govt. That sense of entitlement and importance needs to be stripped from them.
Hope you are happy and doing well!!! xoxo

Appointing Senator Clinton is a bad idea. If the President-elect is truly for change he needs someone who supports that and so far Clinton has held true to business as usual.
This is about the differences between these two individuals, the differences between their stated foreign policy and Obama's promise for change.
Clinton did not win.
A policy that is internally fractured and divisive instead of comprehensive and cohesive. A policy that has not learned to look beyond dominance and war.
If Obama is serious about turning America around, he should not be considering another Clintonite at all. He should be considering others. Someone like Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel would be my pick and a much wiser choice.
Hagel has spoken out against the war, supported many of Obama's initiatives in the Senate, as well as during his campaign, and, as a Republican, would help bridge between party lines.
Hagel also understands that the US

Honestly, I really was cheerleading for the woman, ready to bury the hatchet and give her the benefit of the doubt. But this last round just smells and I don't like it.
And the NYT is not the gospel and it's not always right, but sometimes it is right and this has gone on a long time and it is very suspicious.
A lot of people at State are not thrilled with it either.
I think what gets me is that I was thinking it could work out and then the typical clinton pattern emerged and now I think it would be very divisive and corrosive to Obama's agenda and to his team.

Yes, when this drama started AGAIN, it felt just like de-jah-voo all over again. I had exactly the same visceral feeling as when the Clintonistas and the MSM seemed to be trying to strong-arm Obama into taking her as is veep. And, AGAIN, there is talk of all the negotiating about paying off her outstanding campaign debt...will this never end??? It's that same sense of narcissistic entitlement that smells so bad. She should be kissing his butt for a plum appointment like that...there are other just as, or more qualified people for the SOS...that don't bring any baggage or freaking DRAMA. In fact, the more I think of it, the more it doesn't seem possible...it just doesn't fit with Obama's consistency and steadiness through this entire process.

Yes, it does remind me of the whole veep thing. For a couple days I was actually very optimistic---Bill was going to do whatever it took to cooperate and I thought that bode very well. But now, I think, okay, I've been had again!
We just don't need the drama. I think Obama is very machiavellian in a good sort of way and that he is one step ahead of it. I'll be fascinated to see what comes of all of this. My theory is he was giving her and Bill just enough rope to hang themselves. And it was all going very well, but of course, they just couldn't resist the drama and here we go again.
I think she should go work for Teddy on a healthcare subcommittee now and be grateful! :-) I'm like you, I hate the sense of entitlement that comes across from the Clinton camp and that was the final straw for me.

Making statements by leaking information ahead of time? Turning everything into a 3 ring circus?
If HRC is to be SOS, her people really need a change in style so that she can do the job substantively.

That's my read of the article as well. I also think they're actually leaking it in order to create the space so Obama can walk the appointment back.
Obama's staff are very leakproof and they haven't been quoted before now that I can ever remember leaking stuff. So the fact they are and that its being reported makes me think that they're doing so with Obama's permission and they're knocking down this appointment. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Interesting NYT article--I wouldn't say that it's 'her paper.' This says that the people who would have to work with her would need "the heft to keep Mrs. Clinton’s outsized personality in check."
Apparently, if HRC gets the position, two of Obama's closest foreign policy advisors will probably not accept certain posts; since they were key in showing during the primaries that her actual foreign policy experience was far less than she was claiming (remember the First Lady schedule and the sniper fire?). Interesting to see how much drama is surrounding her even now...
FTA:"...if Mrs. Clinton doesn’t get the Secretary of State job, Democratic advisers say a whole host of opportunities open back up for all of the Obama foreign policy types who got on her bad side during the primaries."

Governor Richardson blew up his personal relationship with the Clintons to back then Senator Obama. He delievered constantly, everytime he was on television or on a campaign stop.
President-elect Obama owes Governor Richardson this nomination because when Jeremiah Wright ranting like a sinner, Governor Richardson was there for him.
Politically, if President-elect Obama picks Governor Richardson he will lock up, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and probably Arizona in 2012.
If President-elect Obama listens to the Lord, he knows what to do, give Governor Richardson this appointment, if he doesn't this is not the change I believe it.

While I think there are some who might be better picks, I would be thrilled with Bill Richardson being SoS. His temporment, social skills, and vast negotiation experience would be a huge plus.
However, I would disagree that Obama "owes" anyone for an endorsement. I should hope he wouldn't be doling out positions as 'pay-back' like many other presidents have done but rather, picking the best people.
Also, I must admit that I was very disappointed that Richardson took so long to make his endorsement public. It could have made a huge difference at a crucial part of the race--Texas and Nevada (two big losses for Obama)--had he stepped up just a bit earlier. But we all know that he 'paid' dearly anyway (being called Judas and all), so we have to respect him for not bowing under the pressure to endorse HRC simply b/c the Clintons felt that he 'owed' them.

All this drama, God is trying to tell him something and He is saying, son don't do it, don't pick her. :)
President-elect Obama has done well so far. In the Primaries he listened to the Lord which is why he won. In the words of the Color Purple, "God is trying to tell you something."

That's what's so worrying about this whole 'team of rivals' discourse. It works in some instances with some people in some periods of history.
It's not a magic formula for success each and everytime. I pray Obama will be wise as to when it applies and when it doesn't. Lincoln, his role model, is a role model, but that's as far as it goes. The historical periods were different as were the challenges. You can't apply everything from Lincoln today and think it will work. It's becoming a mantra which is always dangerous.
And to Lorraine, I loved the Color Purple. One of my favorite movies and books ever.

You're absolutely right, it doesn't always work. Although Seward was a total Machiavellian who initially didn't respect Lincoln, after working with him he became one of Lincoln's most loyal and trusted allies.
I would not put HRC in this category--I have said it before: since Obama is supposedly "obsessed" with the story of Lincoln's cabinet, he also knows about Salmon Chase, whom he made the Sec of Treasury. Chase did a good job but NEVER quit trying to undermine Lincoln. He never quit running for president. Lincoln for the most part kept the upper hand, but Chase was a major thorn in his side from start to finish (even after Lincoln acquiesced and made him Supreme Court Justice. Not saying that HRC would be as bad as Chase was, but his story is a good example of why it's not always wise to keep ALL your rivals close at hand.

Hi Nanci:
I've had mixed feelings too. We've all learned throughout this process that you can't always trust what you see or hear in the press. Today, I decided that I will trust Barack Obama to make this decision. No one will put him in a box or strong arm him into making this decision. If the drama is being generated by the Hill/Bill camp, he will not tolerate it and he will not pick her. If it's not being generated by her camp, and if he believes she will work as part of his team to carry the message that he wants carried, he will pick her.
I do agree that we need an answer soon so that we can move on. I also hope that there is a good place for Bill Richardson if it is not as SoS.
Barack Obama will make the right decision, and it won't be because he was manipulated in any way.
Just my humble opinion.

And where would each one of us be if we didn't think we could change for the better. Practically it doesn't happen often in politics, but one can hope and pray! And when it does happen, what a sight to behold.
I love that Obama offered that hope to Leibermann and to Clinton.

No Clinton for State. Susan Rice for secretary of state. We need someone who is not a warmonger. Hillary doesn't understand war and peace. SUSAN RICE!!!
Who are these people that "believe in" Hillary? What do they believe in? What exactly does she have in her political philosophy that attracts them? All I see is an adoration, probably motivated essentially by envy, of an alpha-female.
Let's remember why Obama won. It was because he was ONE OF US. He was the smartest, most charismatic, most powerful anti-war activist in American politics. Clinton and McCain lost because they were not that. Do not give the warmongers power over our foreign policy!
Not only does Hillary carry the Iraq baggage and lack (to my knowledge) any special insight on foreign policy (please prove me wrong), Bill Clinton is a big problem. He said he would step away from his foundation and alert the administration to his speaking schedule in order to pave the way for his wife. Great Bill, but two problems. First he's basically admitting that his foreign entanglements present a conflict of interest. Second, let's be clear, his foundation actually does some good work fighting AIDS and poverty. He should keep doing it; it would be a loss to the world for him to step down. But he can't allow it to become a backdoor to the state department for influence peddling. Plus it would add inefficiency to the State Department if part of their official duty is to keep a close eye on Bill Clinton. Just keep him out and let him do his own thing.
I would be extremely happy with Chuck Hagel at State. This man deserves something in the cabinet. He has been the greatest voice of reason on foreign policy in the Republican Party for the past decade. He has a good relationship with Obama and has incredible knowledge, wisdom, and judgment, and would add to the pledge of bipartisanship. So Susan Rice and Hagel are both good suggestions, and perhaps he would be even better.

Governor Richardson deserves this appointment. But if he doesn't give it to him (it would be one of the BIGGEST mistakes in his President-elect Presidency), Chuck Hagel would be great! I love him and his is honest and trustworthy something I can't say about Hillary Clinton at the moment.

I like Bill Richardson, also. He would be able to communicate better with Chavez, the rest of Latin America, and South America. I suspect that he will be able to communicate with the Arab world, too. Honestly, the Arab world is still male oriented. They may disrespect Hillary not because of her policies but because of her gender. Whomever is selected, I am certain will be able to handle the myriad of situations.

I hate for you to leave, Cilla, but I certainly understand. I almost left two days ago but decided not to. Now I'm not so sure myself. I heard pundits very obviously referring to our blog on the news. I was actually embarrassed for us and I felt really bad for Barack. He's working his heart out for us and everyone else in this country, including the ingrates. He has the biggest job of any President in years and years. And many of the folks on this blog sound like a bunch of self-absorbed babies. Me, me, me . . . what I want, what I want, . . . It's one thing to have opinions, it's another to sound like you actually believe the world revolves around your and your desires and wishes. I suggest few complaining anywhere near capable of being President. Maybe everyone who still supports Barack should leave and let the whiners have it to themselves. I don't know anymore. It's disgusting. Barack believes in us and this is what he gets?

Most definitely appear to be attention-seekers. I wish all of us who want to work with Barack could agree, really agree, to completely ignore the whiners and complainers. Typically I wouldn't say to ignore in mass, but we need to get ourselves in gear. There are too many problems to be faced to continue to spend time appeasing (there's that word) a bunch of immature whiners. We need to support Barack and each other, determine what we can do to help, and make it clear that he has MANY behind him.

Seriously! I hope it isn't either as I thought that was one of the better agree to disagree, civil discussions other than a few wayward comments, that we've had on the blog in a long time.
Dissent is okay people. It's okay to debate issues on here without being negative.
I am thrilled Obama has been elected. I've been on the blog for the past couple days saying Yay excitedly after every appointment has been announced.
But, if no dissent or discussion is allowed on here, I'm thinking the appellation Obamabot is true. And we aren't obamabots here are we? I didn't think so!
I think this transition process is very exciting and we all have a voice and a piece of it because we all played our various roles in getting Obama elected. That is why some people are so vested in commenting on various appointments, it's out of a sense of ownership and participation. Surely that's a good thing?
Just ignore the whiners and don't let them get you down y'all. I see the glass half full and although there has been whining, trolls and some naysayers, I find this blog on the whole very positive and constructive. I'm not sure where you all are seeing all the doom and gloom negativity. Honestly. Help me with that.

Excellent points about Bill's work, Monroe. You are so right--that with the negative that is not guaranteed to go away, he is also doing a lot of positive work that would be a loss if he 'stepped down.'
I also agree that Hagel would be an excellent choice. That would be a true appointment toward change. When was the last time that a president appointed a cabinet member from the other party? Actually, you guys' rational points actually make me quit worrying about this. We've seen what Obama values and how he works, and I must say that with that in mind, it just makes a lot more sense that he would appoint someone he implicitly trusts and has worked with for a good while--such as one of his advisors like Susan Rice, or a fellow Senator like Hagel.
All this brings me to a new thought: I'm sure he has had these discussions with all of them--Hagel went on his 'foreign policy tour,' Rice worked on the campaign, and Richardson campaigned for him enthusiastically. Thus, that is probably why we haven't heard much about discussions with them--he's probably already had them. We're hearing most about discussions w/ HRC because he is not close to her relationally and thus, needs more personal vetting. (Assuming, that is, that the leaks have not being coming from her camp.)

Of course it is not a coincidence. Why would it be? Congress is stalling on the $25 billion auto manufacturer bail out and investors are getting all wackey.
I believe that this economic pain is absolutely essential so that we can shake out the fat and get down to our fighting weight. We can only rebuild an economy once the fat is gone, and boy is it going fast. The auto industry sued (and won) against every single that would require a higher MPG rating. Now, they want $25 billion to continue with their failed business model! I say bullshit and so should all of us!
The market is adjusting the way it always does. It is completely irrational the way investors are acting lately. There is no rationale to a 900 point drop in two days. Fear is everywhere, and it will stabilize sooner or later.
IMHO

Then click on the title of the the message (not on the name of the sender), and go below, it will be open there.

the White House and the republicans are saying the Big 3 is all about the UAW. Guess they need to scapegoat someone, but when Reagan got all the blue collar, the infamous Reagan dems, they were from the unions mostly. Now Obama has gained back those voters and the republicans cry foul about unions again, of course! I have been critical of the Big 3 long before now, but just letting the American Auto industry fail and disappear is not even optional in my mind. I've seen how hard my state of Michigan, and other Midwest states have been hit.
If we can bail out wall street, we can help out main street imho, and I know President elect Obama will also stay committed to energy independence, while finally showing support for FAIR trade, which we have not had under President Bush.

I'm very upset about the SOS appointment, but I'm not disconnecting or leaving the blog, or not supporting our president.
President Obama has made a huge mistake tapping Clinton. Look at how messy this whole thing has gotten. Didn't Obama understand that Clinton would take him down this high drama road?
There were no leaks until he tapped Clinton and now things are almost out of control.
If Clinton is carrying on like this and she hasn't been formally offered the job, what's going to happen when she's SOS? Does Obama actually believe she's going to listen to anything he has to say? Please!
Things were going along fine until Obama re-opened this can of worms. The Clintons now believe they have Obama over a barrel. That's never a good position to be in when you're dealing with the Clintons.
I'm disgusted so I understand where Cilla's coming from. We've been at this since DAY ONE. It's disheartening because we thought we were rid of the Clinton drama. What was the purpose in voting for Obama if we were going to get stuck with Clinton? He can't control her. She's sneaky, and underhanded and conniving. Obama will not be able to control Hillary Clinton.
Picking her is a BIG mistake.

2.5 million job losses next year........
...With all sides sensing doom for a Big Three automaker rescue, the finger-pointing proceeded.
White House press secretary Dana Perino on Thursday blamed Reid for not allowing the Republicans' separate auto-aid plan to come up for a vote.
"Unfortunately it looks like Sen. Reid just wants to pick up his ball and go home for the next two weeks — two months — for vacation," she said.
..."I can't imagine a scenario where they wouldn't come back, unless the answer is that they just don't care. And if that's the case, then the American people ought to know that."
Congressional Democrats countered that the Treasury Department already had the power to grant emergency funds to the automakers, but the Bush administration opposed the approach.
The leaders of the Big Three automakers painted grim picture of their financial position during two days of congressional hearings, warning that the collapse of the auto industry could lead to the loss of 3 million jobs. Detroit's automakers, hurt by a sharp drop in sales and a nearly frozen credit market, burned through nearly $18 billion in cash reserves during the last quarter — about $7 billion at GM, almost $8 billion at Ford and $3 billion at Chrysler. GM and Chrysler said they could collapse in weeks.
"I don't believe we have the luxury of a lot of time," GM CEO Rick Wagoner told a House hearing.
..."If there's a Chapter 11 (for) one of the companies, it will drag at least one other with them, if not all of them.
And I do not believe Chapter 11 is where it will end.
It will go to liquidation," Gettelfinger said.
Automakers ran into more resistance from House lawmakers, who chastised the executives for fighting tougher fuel-efficiency standards in the past and questioned their use of private jets while at the same time seeking government handouts.
"My fear is that you're going to take this money and continue the same stupid decisions you've made for 25 years," said Rep. Michael Capuano, D-Mass.
The stakes are high. The Detroit automakers employ nearly a quarter-million workers, and more than 730,000 other workers produce materials and parts that go into cars.
About 1 million more people work in dealerships nationwide. If just one of the automakers declared bankruptcy,
some estimates put U.S. job losses next year as high as 2.5 million.

RJ,
How much suffering you ask?
Recall that half of the worlds population lives off of just two cups of rice a day and very little more...
America has been simply too fat for too long. We used our wealth to create war, to buy SUVs, to burn holes in the ozone layer, and to burn fossil fuels at a truly staggering rate. We used it to buy starbucks, plasma TVs, disposible cell phones, new cars we don't need, and other useless and absolutely abnoxious stuff. We took what little equity we had in our homes and bought big cars, we charged money on our credit cards.
What pisses me off is that I never did any of this stuff. I do not have a credit card, no second mortgage on my home, I drive a used 1995 Honda Accord with 240,000 miles on it (still gets 33 mpg highway), and buy new clothes very rarely. I have never once in the past 15 years paid anything late.

NEW YORK – Stocks have plunged again to levels not seen in more than five years as hopes fade that lawmakers will soon put together an aid package for U.S. automakers.
Huge declines in the financial and energy sectors led stocks lower Thursday. The pullback for the second straight day amid heavy volume sent the Standard & Poor's 500 index down 6.7 percent to the 752 level, below the closing low of 776.76 logged on Oct. 9, 2002.
The Dow Jones industrial average, meanwhile, has fallen about 445 points, or 5.6 percent.

Tracy,
What do you suggest we do on a day to day basis? If we conserve our dollars the economy falls more.
Obama is 100% behind renewable energy policy for America and will require the auto industry to re-tool to build more effecient automobiles in order to get a bailout. Obama is on board with this and that is a very good thing.
Our economy is a consumer-driven economy. It works like this: Americans get in their big cars and drive to the big malls to buy big bags of big stuff to put in their big houses, and it all goes on their big fat visa credit card bill.
The house of cards effect. We all saw this coming but kept on spending and spending and spending. Humans are weird.
I hope all of you out there have 12 months of savings to pay for things like rent, mortgage, groceries for a while. I hope we all know how to adjust because we will have to.
I hate to be all doom and gloom. But the bright side is this: A new American economy based on renewable and green-energy will bring us out of this slump. And that is all this is.
Barack Obama can't fix this...nobody can alone. It will require staying positive and not giving in to fear. It will require a re-tooling of each and every one of us.
In Obama We Trust!

I understand that conserving dollars causes the economy to fall more but with all that has been happening my family certainly has been tightening their belts. We have been keeping more in savings in preparation for an uncertain future. We are doing a grab bag for Christmas (for the adults) instead of buying for everyone and we won't be taking our family vacation this winter.
I suspect the economy will fall further as I am sure mine is not the only family changing their spending habits.
I don't know all the answers. I am trying to educate myself some more. I know I will do what I can and what is asked of me by this administration. I will continue to help in my community and offer a helping hand to those who are suffering from this mess of an economy.

Tracy,
I was just wondering your thoughts that's all. Thank you. Nobody has all the answers of course.
My wife and I plus our baby boy (and maybe another?) will be fine. We are resourceful people and actually hate to spend money. We go to Old Navy to buy clothes, and 9x out of 10 walk out empty-handed and frustrated. Then, I drive to the thrift store and buy some nice used cotton dockers for $4 and a few nice shirts for $3 a piece. There is so much fat on the land living cheaply in America is easy.
We have enough savings to live for about 24 months before being on the streets. Of course, we will make money in the next while still but it will slow down.
I am self-employed, which should be an event on "Fear Factor" during this economic climate.
I feel like the guy at a poker table and keep telling myself to just sit tight and not show any emotion. The rest of the players will eventually get nervous, lose their cool and bow out. As long as I stay calm (while self-employed) I will be fine...
I like to tell myself this anyway.

A little over a year ago when I started getting involved in the campaign and then donating I found myself becoming more and more thrifty so that I could donate more to the campaign.
So I guess in the end this campaign opened my eyes to some of my own personal waste and made a more conscience consumer out of me.

Blame everything on Bush. Who writes the bills that are presented to the President? I know but do you guys know. I t is the Congress and Senate. So you might want to take a look at who has been screwing things up and think about what we face the next 4 years. You guys are all complaining now but just wait. You will have much more to complain about in the next year or so. Call me a troll all day long but mark my words. Because I am not all thrilled with the ONE, you guys can't stand it. Well I will never be thrilled with Obama and his views or his policies. This economy was doing great until 2 years ago and that is when the Democrats took control. That is the way I see it and if you care to learn the truth, google it and see for yourself. Have a good day fighting with each other.

It started with the bad decisions made by the banks and the housing committees that lent money to people that could not afford mortgages and defaulted on their loans once the interest rates were raised. Until then, they had interest rates that were low and could get by.

He is now about to appoint her to be in charge of foriegn relations. What a contradiction. Progressives pushed him to the finish line, but he chose to appoint Hawkish (right leaning) cabinets. The change will be the policies that Hillary follows...Baracks. Did you really think that there would not be experienced politicians named to the cabinet? And as the Clinton administration was the only democratic one since Jimmy Carter's, that's where the majority of them are going to come from. It will be in the way our government performs and the policies set forth by the POTUS that will be the change that we can believe in.

Actually I disagree, foreign policy wasn't the reason BO won over HRC, and don't forget they both received around 18 million votes.
BO stayed true to his message of change, HRC was all over the place but she happily morphed to pick up votes she thought he was struggling with, blue collar, women, hard working - read whites etc etc.
Ring a bell re McCain?
Stewart was off base I reckon.
Fact is HRC will be delivering BO's message. If she does turn out to be SOS and I'm not convinced the BO camp has decided on that yet. I also bet that if they decide against her being in that role, the only people who will be bothered are a few remaining stalwart supporters.
I don't think anyone else really gives a four X.
Having said that, if she does become SOS I think she has the gravitas to carry BO's message. All the rest of the chatter is just the drama that follows the Clinton's around. The MSM love it and the Clintons are connected to enough people that there's always someone with something to say about it.
That's why I don't get wound up about this stuff, it will all come out in the wash and there's no way BO will allow himself to be shifted sideways from his agenda.
My penny's worth.

Not to cause even more confusion here but there is a book that's called "The Shock Doctrine."
Conspiracies are a daily fact. It's seems more plausible that they might have known that an attack was coming, but simply chose to ignore it so they could use it as a catalyst for regime change in the Middle East.
History has shown us that reality is often stranger than fiction.
But there are all kinds of things to consider before a person goes down the path of proving our own country is as corrupt as it probably is.

Lieberman decision pits Dean against liberal blogosphere
It's no secret that most of the liberal blogosphere loves Howard Dean and loathes Joe Lieberman. So it's interesting to see how progressive bloggers have responded to the news that Dean supports Senate Democrats' decision to give Lieberman a slap on the wrist for his efforts on behalf of John McCain and other Republicans over the past year.
Responding to the news that Senate Democrats voted 42-13 to allow Lieberman to keep his position as Homeland Security chairman, Dean told Greg Sargent of TPMElection Central that he's "fine" with the outcome, saying that the senators only did what President-elect Barack Obama wanted them to.
Obama "called the shots, and that's fine," Dean said, adding that the vote to support Lieberman came from "the spirit of unification, which is what the President-elect wanted... It's pretty hard to run the country based on, 'We're all working together,' if your first act is to strip someone who was your political enemy...of power."
...
During that conference call, FireDogLake's Jane Hamsher laid into Dean, saying:
With all due respect, Governor Dean, we were all just told to go screw ourselves. That our concern for Barack Obama and that our concern about the war and everything else that we fought so hard for within the Democratic Party is meaningless.
...
a little disappointed with the former governor of Vermont, writing, "Howard Dean recite[d] Obama's talking points about Lieberman."

It's no coincidence that Obama and Dean (entirely different personalities) are alike in so many ways.
Neither of them are so ideoligical driven that the are blinded to the possibilities of "what dreams may come".
This past Mon, Nov 17, was Howard Dean's 60th birthday and today Nov 20 is Joe Biden's.
I'm a proud that they and Barack Obama are working to get a working-coalition together to solve intrasient/ingrained problems solved in America -- problems that have been around for decades.
I'm so excited about the first 100 days of the Obama/Biden administration.

TNR pointed out that letting Lieberman get off easy also scores points with moderate Republicans like McCain and Lindsey Graham. Health care and energy are going to be really really tough to pass: Obama will need every vote he can get from either side of the aisle. (Along these lines, see also the Waxman vs. Dingell battle in the House.)
Reagan once said that it's amazing what you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit. I see a similar pragmatic streak in Obama. He doesn't care how "tough" he looks, he cares whether he can get his agenda passed. If the velvet glove works, great, but the iron fist is there if needed.
He beat the Chicago machine, he beat the Clinton machine, and he beat the Republican machine. Maybe it's time to give him a little credit for political savvy?
The liberal blogosphere has the right to exist, but I think they need to cool it. We won a sweeping victory on Nov 4th and some are fixated on settling old scores......

I agree that no president should be 'held hostage' by any group of supporters, but calling them whiners, trolls, holier-than-thou is not helpful. As a self-described pragmatic centrist, Barack Obama did get a lot of grassroots help from a variety of groups. Many of them did do the foot-work/fundraising/phonecal ls.
MOVEON alone has about 3 million members.
Kos(Moulitas) was on MSNBC today. His main complaint was that Chairman Lieberman did not provide the necessary oversight on the Bush admn(especially Katrina).
His treatment of Democrats and Obama during the general election still does not sit well with them.
Others on his site were upset because in 2006, the Democrats voted Lieberman out(lost) in the Connecticut Democratic primary. Running again as an Ind, Lieberman ended up winning the senate seat after the Republican party(which had their weak candidate) urged their party faithful to vote for Lieberman.

Wade there are thousands of issues to deal with in our country. A person isn't a mor..n because they haven't researched an issue as you have.
Do you pretend to think you are going to get people to listen you by calling them names?
If people find what you say is interesting, but still have hard accepting it; will they then change their minds because you shout louder or use foul language?
Even if I were interested in what you say; I would try to find another person who could discuss it more reasonably.
It reminds me a bit of how Ron Paul supporters would act.

Frankly, a couple of weeks ago, I was not keen on hearing that Hill was among the short list for Sec of State. However, I suspect with all the ramifications of her continuing in the Senate where she could cause damage, it is best to keep her close to the chest. Then again, I suspect the offer and Hill's "leak" are also part of "face" to float her out there--here--to hear the rumbles from the public at large. I have a funny feeling Hill just wants to be asked for everything and then will say thanks but no thanks.
There is no conceivable way that Bill will ever be non-controversial with his world-wide business dealings. I told this group time and again about Bill's dealings with Frank Guistra and it is his largest albatross. As well vetting his foundation and dealings with miners for sustainability would be a good hat trick. One would need to truly understand just what gold and diamond miners do to poor countries such as Peru,
Equador, India...etc. Bill's foundation I dare say is a rouse when it comes to "helping" out many of these villages--After the Damage done by the Gold and Diamond miners. I know a bit about this and I tell you it would not be easy vetting Bill with his relationship with these companies. Equador has thrown out most of these companies. Piura, Peru has also thrown them out--for now. Some villages in India haven't been so lucky as the government is bribed by these groups. Bill's foundation should be in front of the damage of these companies not behind them sweeping up...---anyway the Clintons have a lot to answer to in regards to their business dealings and that includes Hill! Whatever Obama figures out I am sure he is well aware of what it all means and nonetheless will remain IN charge.
Vamos a ver!

A couple thoughts...
1) Many in the liberal blogosphere are upset about President-Elect Obama’s support of Senator Joe Lieberman’s effort to maintain his Homeland Security Committee Chair. I think Obama’s gesture is the kind of change we worked for in his campaign. There does not need to be political revenge. Frankly, if Lieberman had any class, he would have resigned the position and accepted a “back-bench” role in the upcoming session.
2) What’s with all this blogosphere anger over President-Elect Obama’s cabinet and other picks? The fact that some of these people have previous experience in government does not preclude them from helping to bring the change we worked for. Folks, let Obama be Obama. It’s worked fairly well so far.

Bill Clinton had a lot of problems with the left in the Democratic party during his tenure. Many referred to him as Republican-lite(DLC). In 1994, the Democrats also lost control of the congress for the first time in 40 years on his watch. They also felt that he compromised/capitulated many Democratic principles to the Republicans. This was part of the reason other 3rd parties(Nader/Green) numbers grew. He also lost a lot of support in congress. Of course it did not help that he scored only 40+ percent in his election. When compared to Bush, they of course remember Clinton's relative peace and prosperity.
As a centrist, even through my disappointments by them, my Clinton-like never left me. I followed the details of his admn back in the 1990's. My concerns about the 1990's/this 2007-8 primary/post-primary/general/p ost-general all-things-Clinton is their way of causing/attracting distractions/drama/scandals. Al Gore expressed this concern about the missed opportunities post-Monica scandal.
If Hillary and Bill Clinton can tamp down on these concerns of mine and many others and embrace 'change', they could come out better than they ever were. It is in her personal interest not to cause Barack Obama any grief. Believe me, the media and the GOP have latched on to the potential for controversy. The media will latch on to anything(real or imaginary). The Clintons are media magnets for that purpose.
I suggested earlier that those who want to vent should post DEAR HILL/BILL constructive requests here. Tell them exactly what you want them to change(for the better). If enough people do that, the media and other blogs would spread the word.

ENOUGH ON CLINTON SOS (CAN IT & FORGET IT)
This is why Clinton would NOT have made a good VP pick. The Clintons cannot help themselves no backwards pun intended. They cannot help BUT help themselves. They want it their way and they want it ALL. They are deliberately playing games and making sure they are being played out in the media. THAT’S WHAT THEY DO BEST. They know how to play the Media.
1. FORGET Hillary as SOS
2. Give Hillary some lesser post WHETHER she like it or not.
3. Help pay her Campaign debts
4. Pick someone else for SOS and be done with it. DO IT NOW BEFORE HILARY turns down SOS as part of the Clinton Game plan. She knows if she is SOS, she can hang up a Presidential 2012/2016 run. When the Clintons get stuck on a goal they do not give up. They find a way around obstacles to get to their goal.
5. Obama is an obstacle to the Clintons goal of getting back into the White house. That’s what they live for now.
6. PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA (if you had shown as much drama over a Pres-elect Hilary offer to Obama as SOS. Would she not just canned the idea and gave you a lesser post. By now no one, even the media would blame you. Bill & Hillary drama, for 4-8 YEARS!! Come on now the writing is on the wall.

"Peace, Hope Prosperity"
Come together sons and daughters
Now’s the time to stand up for this country you love
If you’re a father, like I’m a mother
I will not leave my child the weight of war and despair
Come together all my brothers
Now’s the time to pledge your voices deep from your soul
If you’ve been workin, still it’s not workin
There’s got to be a way to break outta the mold
Peace, Hope Prosperity
No more inequalities
It’s all just too discouraging
To think we’d leave behind such broken dreams
We should respect our elders’ dreams
That all people in this nation
Should be free from all damnation
Live as one, we’re not as different as we seem
We all need love, friends- family
Come together all my sisters
Now’s the time to stand up for those babies you love
If you’re a mother, like I’m a mother
I will not leave the ones I love there out on the street
But what’s a son to do when he ain’t got no money?
His job’s been stolen by a thief in the night ‘n then shipped overseas
His wife and kids go hungry, tensions are risin
Tell me, is this supposed to be the American Dream?
Peace, Hope Prosperity
Will bring us closer to our dreams
There’s got to be a better way to see some
Common ground when minds are free
We should protect our childrens' dreams
Let all people in this nation
Seek their goals and aspirations
Let the legacy for generations be
There’s no surrender-just BELIEVE
We should respect our own beliefs
Bridge- Gospel Choir
Maybe reason or compassion will arise
and cause us to love our own neighbor as thy self and take pride
We must honor those before us, hear their cries
Leave the world better than we found it on the day that we die
Each new generation has been cherished onto
The least we

I would just like to personally thank future President elect Obama for offering the Secretary of State position to Senator Hillary Clinton. As a former Clinton supporter I am elated that he was able to put aside any personal animosity behind and recognize her amazing potential to help his cabinet.
Barack Obama is a truly amazing man and I can't wait for him to get this country back on track again! It is fitting that Obama has been reading a lot of Abraham Lincoln books lately because I believe he will go down in history as an equally significant figure.
Auto Industry Bail Out |

I think that this would be a tragic mistake to offer the auto industry a bailout package. There is a fundamental flaw with the American auto industry business model. Until that is corrected, you could throw a billion dollars at the problem, and the issue will still be there. It may be put off, but it is inevitable. As long as the unions are in play and the average cost per car for employee benefits is nearly $1,600 per car produced versus $300 for every Toyota produced, the American car companies can't compete and will continue to struggle. They need to tell the unions that they will go out of business unless they change. I think that the lifetime health benefits should be cut for all employees that are more than 5 years away from retirement. The government should include in the healthcare reform benefits for retirees that are impacted by this move. Finally, the American car companies need to have more vision and start to produce cars that are more efficient. My dad use to work for GM and the company is very slow in reacting to change. I have worked for Toyota and they were always trying to anticipate changes and to be on the forefront of those changes. We operate in a free market economy (or so I thought) so we need to let the market run its course and companies that are most efficient prosper and the others fade away. If we bail out the auto industry, then who is next? I didn't agree with the bail out of the financial institutions and I really don't agree with this proposal even more. Let's take all of this money that magically is available and give it back to the taxpayers. You want to spur the economy? Give $700 billion to taxpayers in refunds and you will see house payments being made, debts being paid down, and purchases of goods. Why select a few to benefit when so many need help?

Although I was a Barrack supporter from the beginning,
once the primary process was over some folks
remained critical of Hillary. That was a real shame.
However, the selection of Hillary for S. of S. is a great idea. I would prefer Gov. Bill Richardson, but believe
Hillary will do a great job and will be a strong team player. Also, hoping there is a spot for Gov. Richardson.
Also, during the Presidential race, Gov. Sarah Palin
was fair game for much criticiism especially on her negative attacks at her campaign stops. However,
the race is over and the best team won, so it is time
to end the rhetoric against Palin. If she continues
to stay in the public eye, then the main stream media
can do the job of commenting. And if the past is any
indication, the TV comics and late night hosts
will have a field day with the potential material.

the big day in January.
I think it would be great to have Gov. Bill Richardson in
one of a number of positions that he could fill
with experience and dedication to the team.
