This is an article I bumped into. It's very well written. I wish I could write this well. He puts to words what many are feeling about all these constant and unnecessary wars. I can't wait for the day when peace is the norm. We have to stand up to these gangsters, as the writer so eloquently describes the current situation.

that is the most biased or one-sided piece that I have read so far. It sounds more like a Palestinian cause "recruitment advertisement" or a take the Palestinian's side guide to me.

To use another more commonly used word, "PROPAGANDA."

This situation is much more complexed than the writer is willing to admit.

It's pretty much one sided. I still like how it was written though. The issue is very complex but I feel his larger point was; the extremes of every group on the planet is holding us hostage. For instance, some neighborhoods in Brooklyn, during the late 80's and 90's, there was rampant crime and violence. I mean hardcore. From the outside looking in you might have not believe how many extremely educated and law abiding citizens were living there. You would be surprised how many intellectuals, athletes, and artists came from those neighborhoods. Nevertheless, those groups moved in silence, mostly. The gangsters were the ones people respected and in some cases emulated. Now, I grew up with many guys like that. They are not all bad. But, the larger point is their actions prematurely overshadowed the voice of reason. Many people literally died because they were never influenced by the other groups due to the deafening silence. I'm exaggerating the amount of inaction but think about how many more lives would have been saved if those groups moved as aggressively as the gangsters. This is the problem with Israel/Palestine/World. The moderate groups have not been empowered yet. The gangsters are killing each other and taking everyone with them. The gangsters are on both sides. In fact, we have been following that logic for the past eight years, until now. I hope we can spread this feeling to Israel, Gaza, Iran, Iraq, Russia, Georgia, etc. There are groups just like us sitting in silence. Hell, I think we need to find ways, individually, to reach out. Even inaction on this end, knowing what we know, is just as bad as putting a gun to someone's head.

The Dems would be fools 2 continue to play into the Rep or whom ever interests wants to see this useless squabble go on to fracture the Dems before and shortly after Obama takes offices. (hint, HE IS NOT WORTH IT!!) Let Gov Blagojevich GO. Let that issue GO!!. The Gov has EVERY right to appoint Burris, who is ABSULUTLY qualified to take the Senate seat.

IT IS A MISTAKE for Dems to attempt to block it. It will only serve as a wedge issue for the Rep.
The Racial bounders and historical facts on the matter of The US Senate denying African American ELECTED OFFICIALS to be Senators WILL trump ANY so called righteous, justly cause by the Dems.
Some of Americas DEEP Dark secret about how African American (Used to be VERY involved in the political process) until AFTER The US Senate continued to VOTE to not seat those ELECTED African American Officials. Because then so many NONE African Americans will see that there should have and could have been an African American President A LONG , LONG time ago!!. (DIRTY LUANDRY IT’S CALLED)

JUST LET IT GO!. Just say OK Burris is the Gov pick, well OK, and then let the Chicago AG mudle through his case. But I also have issues with that. Now,, is the Gov not the sharpest knife in the draw? Of course not. But can they really convict the Gov on what we used to call SHI%$T Talking. I have yet to hear that he was actually speaking to someone whom he supposedly was willing to make a deal with . All I have hear so far is that he was SHI$%t Talking about what he fantasized could be. Well DAH!! Who amongst us could not be grabbed for SHI$%T talking to one of our friends about who we could be, what we could do. Who we like, who we don’t like. Etc.

DEMS YOU WILL NOT GET HIM!! LET IT GO!!. START OUT OBAMA ADMINISTARTION wit this matter in the hand of the AG. Which will end with NOTING!!.

The more I learn about Roland Burris, regrettably, I have come to an understanding that his acceptance of the senatorial appointment is self serving. It is not for the good of the people of the state of Illinois. He saw it as his one opportunity to become senator. He has allowed himself to be used to further the political edge of the governor. He was not the best person for the job. He was selected for his race. He allowed the race card to be played. He is leaving the seat wide open for the next general election. He is playing party politics that will cause the party to lose in the end. In a historical context, he represents the “old Negro” in the era of the “new Negro” movement. Burris will be remember in the annals of history for his Uncle Tomish behavior in the waning years of his political career on the eve of Obama’s Inauguration. Black people in Illinois need to call Burris out! They should not allow their race to be used for Blagojevich’s political ends!

agree with your comments. My daughter (31yr) and myself (55yr) looked at each other and said .... this is very painful to listen to Burris and Rush.
Burris is "NOT" the best choice to replace Sen/P.E. Obama.

I've just finished work and the Sydney Harbor Bridge is lit up with the fireworks display, it's a beautiful night with the ferries and boats tooting in the New Year..but somethings amiss.. According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.

The President-elect's stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

"Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said.

Israel Rejects Proposed Cease-Fire

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

JERUSALEM, Dec. 31 -- Israeli leaders rejected on Wednesday a cease-fire plan to immediately pause attacks on the Gaza Strip for 48 hours, declaring that as proposed there were no guarantees Hamas fighters would honor the agreement.

Discussions were continuing in hopes of developing a more durable cease-fire that would include firmer guarantees that Hamas rocket fire into Israel would stop.

"It does not contain any guarantees," he added. "There is nothing in the proposal that if we declare a unilateral ceasefire it will mean anything to Hamas and that it will ensure a durable ceasefire afterwards."

Israel continued to pound the Gaza Strip for the fifth day from the air and from the sea, targeting Hamas outposts and the network of tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border used by the militant group to smuggle weapons.

Hamas continued firing as well. By Wednesday afternoon local time a barrage of more than 20 rockets and mortar shells had struck southern Israel, including five that crashed in and around the city of Beersheba, 22 miles from Gaza. There were no serious casualties reported.

The cease-fire was proposed by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, Israeli officials said, and is intended to last 48 hours. Humanitarian organizations say a period of calm is needed to get essential supplies into the territory, where 1.5 million Palestinians are running short of food, fuel and medicine.

An Israeli military spokesman said a cease-fire is unnecessary because Israel is already allowing enough aid into the strip. On Tuesday, Lerner said, Israel allowed 93 trucks into Gaza -- 50 with humanitarian supplies and the rest with commercial goods. The humanitarian shipments included flour, rice, sugar, lentils and medication -- all donated by aid groups.

Israel has not allowed foreign reporters into Gaza since its operation began Saturday.

A controversial parody raises broader questions about the Republican Party’s outreach.

GOP leaders will begin charting a new strategy for their party.

Republicans are identified as the party of Southern white conservatives

That was highlighted when a leading contender to take over the RNC sent out a racially charged parody as a holiday greeting.

Reaction within the party was mixed (!!!)calling it either tone-deaf OR hypersensitive.

“Clearly we don’t consider ourselves an all-white, all-male party...”

Congress does not have a single African-American Republican: a handful of GOP’s 168 national committee members are black.

Fewer than 4 percent of blacks voted Republican in the 2008 presidential election.

“Republicans have culturally and politically become a party of Southern, conservative whites,

many of whom are rural, who still have issues with race,

no matter how much they will complain if you suggest that they do,” says a senior researcher at a leading African-African research group in Washington.

The Republican Party was founded in the 1850s to FIGHT slavery.

But starting in the late 1960s, Republicans pursued a so-called Southern strategy

where they openly appealed to white voters and sometimes exploited racial tensions to secure victories.

Pollster Zogby notes an increasing number of younger African-Americans are looking for an "alternative to the Democrats. Some felt Democrats took [their vote] for granted. Others had issue disagreements, from school vouchers to gay marriage to abortion.”

“What we saw at the McCain/Palin rallies – people carrying stuffed monkeys, saying this was Barack Obama, and chanting ‘kill ’em, kill ’em’ – that just ratcheted up racial hatred,” says a political analyst at the University of Texas.

Many people within the Republican Party would like it to move beyond its racial legacy.

In fact, two of the five leading candidates to lead the RNC are African-American: former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell and former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele.

Kennedy camp reigns in Bloomberg

Caroline Kennedy's advisers have told Mayor Bloomberg's political pit bull to tone down his lobbying efforts for her for fear it will kill her chances to be named to the Senate.

"It's just a dialing down of anything that would be harmful to her," the source said.
"Anything like very public meetings with people in City Hall or inappropriate calls to labor leaders will no longer take place. He'll still be involved, just not in the same way."
Another source said Sheekey was being pushed aside so neither Gov. Paterson nor Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver would think Bloomberg was trying to muscle her into the Senate.
"The Bloomberg support has not been helping, clearly, with Shelly or the governor, whose people have talked about him not wanting to feel boxed in," the source said.
Paterson's office would not comment, though a source close to him said he still hasn't decided - and "doesn't like being pushed into anything."

"It doesn't resolve anything as far as I'm concerned," Silver said.
Sheekey downplayed his work on Kennedy's behalf - even as he insisted he was continuing it.
"Caroline Kennedy is a friend of mine," Sheekey told the Daily News. "I'm not doing anything more or anything less than when her name first surfaced. I do hope she'll become a senator. I think she'd be a great senator."
He insisted Kennedy's early support for Obama should help her get the nod.
"New York is on the precipice of appointing someone who supported the new President or appointing someone who didn't," he said.
Kennedy's team of consultants has pushed hard to get her into the seat expected to be vacated by Sen. Hillary Clinton.
A source close to Paterson recently acknowledged that appointing her would help foster a relationship with the new President.
Despite her powerful allies, though, President John F. Kennedy's daughter has stumbled badly in her public debut - first shying away from tough questions, then fumbling a series of interviews by giving vague answers.
Kennedy spokesman Stefan Friedman wouldn't comment directly on Sheekey, but said his diminished role is "absolutely not" a sign she is no longer interested in the seat.
Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf said it was smart to have Sheekey back out.
"The lines have been drawn and now it's up to the governor.

A gay blogger named Chuck from Thousand Oaks, CA was online last evening protesting January 20th Presidential Inauguration.
I posted the following comment, then went to bed.
But looks like a new thread came up right about that time.
So I'm posting it again...

Question:
Can we come to a COMPROMISE in this country?

Must we NEED the LABEL of MARRIAGE for a UNION OF ANY TWO PEOPLE ????

The government doesn't need to decide what YOU call YOUR union!
Governments need be involved ONLY with matters of CIVIL LAW, due to issues of inheritance, taxes, etc.

Wouldn't it be possible to have identical, matching, impossible-to-tell-apart,
Civil Union Documents issued by government for the coupling of EVERY HUMAN COUPLE ???

From that point forward, it would be entirely up to the PARTICIPATING COUPLE, their faith, or lack thereof, as to what OTHER CEREMONY they wanted.

* Catholics could proceed to their church for the Sacrament of Marriage Mass.
* Protestants could go to where ever they usually go for the blessing of their union.
* Agnostics/atheists could leave courthouse as a CERTIFIED COUPLE, and have a party!

Religious CEREMONIES would be then entirely a MATTER OF CHOICE, with any willing, participating, religion!

What EVER the CERTIFIED COUPLE DECIDE to CALL their union would ENTIRELY be up to the couple, but to no one else!

Would this suggestion be an acceptable solution?

I agree. The arguments against gay marriage all come down to religious objections. Phrases like "sanctity of marriage", etc. certainly bring religious overtones into play. Government should recognize "domestic partnerships". Religions can deal with the "sanctity" issues.

I think it would be a great solution if all legal unions were civil unions and marriage was left to religious institutions. In other words, the government would not marry people, only provide civil unions for any couple (straight, gay, lesbian). This would allow all people to get exactly the same civil union rights. Couples would follow the marriage rules of the church that they belonged to. If they didn’t agree with the marriage rules of their church, they would have the option to join another church. Unfortunately, I don’t know how this ever could actually happen.

I feel, however, people like Warren aren’t really interested in protecting marriage. They are really interested in oppressing gays and lesbians, because they feel that it is a sin. In his own words (see link) divorce is a greater threat to marriage than gays and lesbians. Yet, he’s not pushing to outlaw divorce; he’s pushing to outlaw gay marriage.

Beginning in 2009 perhaps, but nothing prior. It's called a compromise(mostly due to cost). However, I don't like the idea of Marriage Certificates being a "collector's item" either.

*I've got to sleep but I checked in and am more upset right now that on our very front top page newspaper is a kid from my daughter's school who is going to Obama's Inauguration through the school activities yet made my 14 yr old daughter who absolutely adores the entire Obama Family from the beginning(...and was the one who got me interested in Obama & politics) come home crying right before Christmas break because this VERY kid who is in her Spanish class called Obama the "T-word" and then they all had a discussion in her next class about "when" not "if" Obama would be... the a(as in killed)-word! My daughter who never shows such aggression, threw today's paper across the room just seeing that this kid is getting the honor of going to Obama's inauguration and yet has been filled with such venom even after Obama was elected as our President.

These kids whose parents can afford the extacurricular activities like football & band have been complaining about not even wanting to go(and they even put in the paper that this kid wanted McCain)... yet, here is my girl who would not only sacrifice so much for/of herself so that I could donate, put in her own time and efforts in getting Obama elected but also convinced me to take a closer look at Obama over 1 1/2 yrs ago(we have stomped some ground and continue to be upmost proud in doing it)!

Due to my daughters Obama spunk, you know what I did? I entered the Convention Contest with the rule "enter as often as you wish" and entered over 5,000 times to show my daughter that with determination & hope... it can happen. I got a reply back that said, "Sherrie, How many times are you going enter? Is your fingers sore?" That was it and the last info or response that I could ever get on it.

I am disabled and learned long ago that society could be very cruel to me... but to my smart, healthy, normal, alway do the right thing, compassionate daughter, too?!

I'm very hurt and probably even more so than my daughter. Thanks for listening & giving me a place to air.

Oh Sherrie this world can be such a cruel place at times. I scratch my head sometimes just wondering how on earth some folks that are so very devious can seem to have what we percieve as success in thier lives.

When Bush won his second term I actually questioned God and asked him how on earth can you allow this man to mess this great country up again and I was furious. I am ashamed to admit this because as a Christian we are taught to not question God. My husband sat me down and told me that God has a plan. Well just think about it if Kerry had won we we have no Barack Obama in the Presidency today. God knew what he was doing!

Your daughter knows what's right because she has you as a great mentor in her life. This other girl does not and just maybe this experience will change her and her parents hearts. It is a hard pill to swallow right now but in time you will see the plan.

Thank you Donna... for so, SO MUCH here! I know and hear what you are saying but just wished it were the kids that could see with such young wisdom of righteousness that received a bit more of the encouraging path, support and recognition. We did have the talk of those who need to "help" all of us by beginning to drop some of their own trash... and we do hope it helps. But still... society needs to keep the "good one's" strong, too ya' know?!

We'll be good with it because I got her an awesome Obama poster for her BD next weekend... and I won't even unravel it to peek so I can be just as happy all over again! :)

If you drink alcohol, you've probably had a hangover at least once in your life -- the pounding headache, nausea, cotton mouth, exhaustion. For many, that hangover comes on Jan. 1. 2009.
Don't let a New Year's hangover ruin your day. Check out some tips on preventing one.

While there's no "cure" for a hangover, "Good Morning America" contributor Dr. Marie Savard busts some myths and offers tips on how to prevent that New Year's Day hangover.
Drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages will sober you up and keep a hangover headache away.  False. Caffeine only acts as a stimulant and interferes with your sleep. It may also make you urinate more and add to dehydration. Only time and a healthy liver to metabolize the alcohol will sober you up.
Taking pain relievers like aspirin after drinking will prevent a hangover.  False. Not only doesn't this work, it can be dangerous. Even a dose or two of aspirin can erode the stomach, causing gastritis, which would only be compounded by the stomach irritant effects of alcohol. Mixing acetominophen and alcohol can lead to acute liver inflammation.

Taking pain relievers the next morning can help.  True. Although taking pain relievers won't prevent your hangover, taking them in the morning with a full breakfast to avoid stomach irritation will treat your hangover headache. Since pain relievers only last four to six hours, it's silly to take them before going to bed because they will be out of your system by morning when your headache occurs.

Drinking fluids, like juice, will help you feel better.  True. Drink lots of juices with potassium and vitamins. It's been shown antioxidants and sugar help minimize symptoms of a hangover. You're dehydrated and your blood sugar is down, so you need sugar and fluids.

And Most Importantly...
Don't overindulge in the first place. One alcoholic drink -- a 12-ounce beer, glass of wine or mixed drink -- takes about an hour to metabolize.
Don't drink and drive. Have a designated driver and a "sober buddy" to see you home safely.

Yes! Just 19 days to go!

Just took our good friends, our beloved animal vet (a very Australian Australian) & his Chinese wife of 26 years out to a most enjoyable dinner. Had a lovely night together as we always do. It is so good to be able to be part of this mixed ethnic society that Australia has become.

Now it is time to celebrate the good things of 2008 - maybe not too many, but there were miracles happening!

Lord, I know you watch closely over your people in the Middle East. Lord, I pray that your will be done on this earth as it is in heaven. I pray for your people of Israel that you lead the wise to do the right thing and that peace prevails among your people. I pray that you bring your Spirit and truth to the hearts of those who have been seeking You in Israel. I also pray for those in the midst of Hamas controlled nations. Innocent people are dying for the selfish actions of a few. Heal broken families and those who have lost loved ones Lord. There is no where in this world that you are not Lord and pray for your presence to infiltrate to these Muslim countries through your missionaries there in Jesus name.

Howard Dean certainly will be remembered for his five terms as governor of Vermont. He will be remembered for creating Dr. Dynasaur, the program that affords access to health care for the state’s children. He will be remembered for his meteoric and unique Web-driven campaign for president in 2004.

But this year, more than his term as governor, his health initiatives or his own run for the White House, he will be remembered for his hand in shaping history in what will surely go down among the most momentous presidential elections. Dean laid the foundation for the strategy that helped elect the nation’s first African-American president.

For his role in the historic election, The Burlington Free Press names Howard Dean of Burlington, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, this year’s Vermonter of the Year.

Dean was chosen from among 100 nominations submitted by people in Vermont and beyond

he took criticism, quite often from party veterans who favored the conventional approach of pouring resources into the swing states. There were calls for his resignation.

From Sam Stein of The Huffington Post, who quoted Paul Begala, the longtime Clinton aide and Democratic strategist: “Begala ‘says it’s a long-term strategy. What he has spent it on, apparently, is just hiring a bunch of staff people to wander around Utah and Mississippi and pick their nose.’”

There were many more comments just as critical. But Dean stuck to his idea — a strategy that could take up to six years to re-establish a Democratic base that could compete — with hard-headedness, New England practicality and a Yankee belief in democracy.

Nov. 4, Vermont became the first of 28 states to be called for Barack Obama. Only Obama’s home state of Hawaii would deliver a higher percentage of voters for the president-elect. David Cain, who nominated Dean for Vermonter of the Year, wrote, “Gov. Dean should know how proud Vermonters are to call him one of our own.”
