From my New Year's letter to friends and family...
2008, for me, was filled with a chronic Obama obsession. It was the joy of my year.
A renewal of innocence for me... the renewal of idealism and dreams. The hope of “possibility” even in my pathological disillusionment and ongoing depressions, this ray of beauty and light was able to lift me and give purpose to my daily life. I did drink the Kool-Aid, and with delight! Not since my youth had that part of me been touched and I often wept with wonder that it could be renewed in such an unexpected way. Obama gave shape to my generation’s spirit of
chutzpah. It gave cause to the rebel in us. Come what may, I have had that reawakening
and I am grateful...
And to my Obama family...
Thanks for the meories and for the bright new future that we are creating together. Happy New Year! Love....Johnnie

I'm a little cautious on your $10.00 min wage, although their is a discussion to be had on livable wages. But i think we could start with the taxes Government takes first, we need some changes S.S. tax. The R's are always saying let us keep our own money, Well the S.S. tax is the most discriminatory tax ever, Barack has called S.S. a safety net, but it is not set up very fair.
If we cut the tax on the first $24,000 of income for both business and individuals we might encourage employers to pay a little more, we would be saying to the people, WE know you need AT LEAST $24,000 to survive in America ( and we could debate that number also), we would then have to change the percentages and levels that something is taken out, I think is should be a very minimal escalting number and I definitely think it should be tied to all income incentives (esp. when we are talking options and packages being put together in board rooms. If we could find a fair S.S. tax system, we could make it solvent and then tackle the income tax situations also.
I think it is a little crazy to keep on giving millions of people a couple thousand dollar check every spring, if we don't owe the tax, don't collect it!

I made $23,000 and change one year...owed $2,100 in taxes...that is more than a months income. Add to it, 8% sales tax every time you spend money..$1,840...another months income.
23,000 minus 3940 equals 19,060 leaves about $1,589 per month to live on.
Housing, utilities, transportation for one is as much as for a those with a few deductions...as a single person, I did not have deductions and my housing was not cheaper becauase it housed only one person....
800 per month to live in a clean safe area left..$789 for everything else.

All these steps aren't going to do anything......
Mitch McConnell can't continue filibusters as he will just have 41 Republicans in the Senate.....all you need is two to not sign on to the filibuster and he doesn't have enough support......he also doesn't want to completely alienate the dems that can do far worse to block his agenda....
This doesn't make sense...what does General Electric have to do with the War in Iraq?...everybody's donated to this guy...he is the Senate Republican leader....
Wendy's doesn't care about these calls..they can look at their numbers and see your efforts are not affected their sales...same with Jack Daniels...
The Obama campaign didn't encourage protests when teh decision was being made regarding Florida and Michigan...they encouraged the supporters in Florida to instead go out and register voters...that is more affective...
Let's go through for a second...
The Republican Party, when they are very angry about some measure that is far left, they don't go out and protest...they just vote at a high rate...
The National Rifle Organization has been one of the most effective organizations in politics...they don't have "sit ins" or "shoot ins"...they just get their supporters to turn out..
The AARP is a strong organization...these senior citizens don't protest...they just show up to vote at a high number...96% of seniors are registered to vote....
These union people can't expect to get huge raises in salary in this economy.....and as far as the minimum wage, the cost of living is like 10% cheaper now then a year ago....all these people will be unemployed if it goes to $10/hour...
A year ago gas was $4....now it is $1.80....thatlowers the price of everything else in the economy besides the gas you purchase..all the stores are selling everything on sale, discounted...

As I look back on 2008, the one thing I am so thankful for is the election of Barack. And, it was due to you, my neighboring brothers & sisters.
Please continue to stand with PE Obama and ignore the trivial matters, like Warren, etc. Keep in mind PE's first MAJOR achievement which occurred minutes after the announcement on Nov. 4th - an instantaneous return to respect of the USA by other nations.

President-elect Barack Obama will meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Monday to discuss a planned economic stimulus package estimated to cost up to $775 billion, a Democratic source said Thursday.
Obama, Pelosi and Reid will then meet with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and House minority leader Republican John Boehner, who have expressed concern about the cost of the economic stimulus package, the source said.
Obama’s meeting with Pelosi and Reid will take place in Reid’s office. The discussion including House and Senate Republican leaders will be held on the Senate side of the Capitol.

My very best wishes to President-elect Obama and his family.
As those who visit these boards regularly know, I started supporting and writing about Barack Obama well over a year ago.
I haven't been here for a while. I am still not over his appointing Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. My objection to that appointment is her ethics. I believe we should not want but demand the highest of integrity from those in high public office.
Hillary Clinton was once fired for being a dishonest, unethical lawyer and a liar, and she has continued to wrap herself in one sordid scandal after another and lie right up to the end of her failed presidential campaign. In my view that kind of behaviour should not be rewarded, particularly not rewarded with public office and appointed by someone who ran his campaign on promises of change, transparency and integrity.
I am disappointed in Barack Obama's appointment of secretary of state; however, I did not spend over a year of my life supporting him for nothing. I admire him more than words can say.
So this is my message to Hillary Clinton:
You are on notice, Hillary Clinton, to do right by Obama. Turn your egocentric personality off, tell the truth, operate with transparency and respect others who may have ideas equal to or better than yours(unlike your secret and vindictive (Congressman Cooper) healthcare strategy.
I personally believe you will screw up. You always have, but prove me wrong. Hijack Barack Obama's presidency with your usual extreme bad behaviour, and you will find yourself once again answering to the nation. But this time they will not forgive you.

Of course, they are not reading the blogs, but certain of their staff members are, or should be.
Also members of the media read the blogs.
I certainly don't spend time writing to read my own blogs and comments. I spend all this time on the blogs to discuss the issues, maybe persuade now and then, and to inform.
I include the latter, because, unfortunately, one thing I learned during the election is that a vast number of people have no idea about the candidates' platforms or records.
That's pretty scary.

If all you say is true, don't you think Barack Obama knew all these things when he asked her to take the job? If all you say is true, Barack is either alarmingly uninformed or doesn't care.
I mean who is the politician here, you or Obama? Who is the PE with the responsibility? I'm sure he knows Hillary a hell of a lot better than you do and he picked her wholeheartedly. He doesn't appear to have second thoughts, didn't ask anyone's permission or for advice on these boards. You need to get over it. Let the boss man do the job he was elected to do.
And you know, the question for this thread, was what are your plans for the coming year? If your post is any indication of your plans for 2009, it appears your intentions are to criticize Hillary and making excuses for Barack. Too bad. As well written as you are, it seems you could put your efforts and talent to better use.

Sometimes out of intense rivalry as experienced by PE Obama and SOS Clinton comes the greatest respect. Perhaps the Clintons saw that it truly was Obama's time and they were as won over or as resigned him and not her to be president and the nominee for 2012 as they watched his campaign against McCain unfold.
The body langauge between them especially at the press conference when her apt was announced indicated a sincerity that can't be faked.
Clinton has everything to lose if she screws this up!!

According to Barack and Hillary, they were good friends before the campaign. Had a lot of admiration for each other from the get go. Barack has said several times that he sought Hillary's advice on a number of occasions prior to the campaign. Maybe they're both liars and only came to respect each other after as you contend. Whatever.
As to screwing up, I think Hillary has a hell of a difficult job. As does Barack who ultimately will be responsible for the outcome in every regard. If he doesn't feel Hillary is effective in the position, he'll handle it. Likewise, Hillary will have a way out if she needs/wants it. 2012 will arrive. Barack will be the encumbant with everything to lose.
Also, while I really don't see how Barack or Hillary could screw things up any worse than they've been messed up under the Bush administration, I remind you we don't hear people blaming Condi or anyone else. They blame Bush and yet I don't see that Bush has lost everything by a long shot. Lol. He will move happily into private life.
Also, no need for the threats, etc. It's not going to improve anything. Hillary and Barack will both do a good job. They are both smart conscientious people. Some will find reasons to criticize no matter what. Others couldn't give a fair assessment/evaluation if their lives depended on it, so favorably biased are they toward their "leader." Reason and fairness and statemanship are in the middle.

Barack Obama is first and foremost a polician. Politicians in many instances make decisions based on political considerations. Any politician worth his or her salt makes decisions based on political considerations regardless of what others may think. If you elected Kucinich, Mccain or any other person for president they will disappoint you with decisions they make which in many instances are based on politics. We elected a poltician and not a preist. If you wanted to vote for a priest then i would go to church. Enough of this Hillary bashing lets see what she will do. Hillary aint no fool she knows she will be under alot of scrutiny. The clinton legacy is hanging on her performance as secretary of state. She does not want to leave has having been a secreatry of state with her own agenda. Its in her best interest for Hillary to work for Obama and not for her self

Serves no purpose other than to have something to talk about in these final days before the shit really hits the fan for the Obama administration.
Success will be measured by the goals set and how well they are accomplished. The rest is just wolfing.

First of all I don't like to be extreme pro- or extreme against HRC or Barack, that is me.
Question:
Is quoting an historical fact that somebody said during the election (primary or otherwise) considered to be against the person who actually said it? In other words, or for example I know and I have heard that Barack once said..."...there is no a conservative america or a liberal America there is only a US of A..."..."...if you rub a lip-steak to a pig it is still a pig..." Or I also remember when HRC said "...shame on you Barack Obama, shame on you meet me in OH..." etc, does that mean that I hate HRC or Barack or I like HRC or Barack? I don't get it, whenever somebody says things that have been said and done during the primaries, especially what HRC said some one here take it as an insult and that is unfortunate, how about the facts. This is the end of 2008, so we have the right to reflect upon what happened this past year and that is that friends!

I'll take a wait & see attitude as far as Hillary Clinton is concerned as well.
Have been logging in to her web site ever since June 2008 & I've noticed something very interesting. Never, has she had a photo of her and Barack on her web site. It's the usual, it's all about Hillary! Even to this day, it's all about Hillary and her appointment as Secretary of State. So, I'll wait and see.
Noticed also that she hardly has a comment on her blogs, it's as if no one is listening or paying attention & you can go back to June 2008.
Not so sure Hillary Clinton truly has following many would have had us believe.

I went to British public schools (that would be private schools in the US), but sorry to disappoint you, I am not British.
Growing up, though, I did learn the importance of integrity. So far, Hillary Clinton has not shown us that she has integrity.
That, by the way, is a fact, not an opinion. Her lies and her scandals are well documented.
When a person is fired for being a dishonest, unethical lawyer and a liar (again, fact; not opinion -- the words of the Democrat who fired her), I don't believe they should be in public office, particularly when, as in this case, that person was practicing law when she was fired.
If her friends and associates see their way to forgiving her and appointing her to high private office, then that's a different matter and none of our business.
For the last month the blogs have once again been filled with shock and disapproval about the shadowy ethics of politicians, namely, Governor Blagojevich of Illinois, yet the responsibility lies squarely with the voters. They voted him into office, despite well publicized questions about his moral and ethical suitability for office. The same applies to the Clintons.
Hillary Clinton may do well as secretary of state; then again, she may not. I simply don't believe people who have behaved the way she has deserve to be in high public office. A country's greatness lies in its leaders. What hope is there for a country when the leaders are second rate and dishonest. How sad that we knowingly disregard dishonesty, when there are thousands of other honest candidates with as much or more experience.
Could it be that Obama is an incredible strategist as well as an incredible leader? If Hillary Clinton screws up, she will be out of the running in 2012. If she does well it will be too audacious for her to run against Obama in 2012.
Either way, she's out. Now that is pretty damn smart of Obama.
But let us never underestimate the audacity of the Clintons.

This is a post from Huffington Post. The Hillary Bashing continues
Hillary is "all hat and no cattle" as they say in Texas. She is Mrs. Bill Clinton, nothing more. It is scary to think of this self-promoting, dishonest opportunist as Secretary of State in these very challenging times. She failed badly "leading" healthcare reform in the 1990s, voted for war in Iraq, claimed to have "dodged bullets in Bosnia" and "brought peace to Northern Ireland", and led her well-financed, dream-team staffed, "inevitable winner" presidential campaign into a ditch. Mean-spirtied and vindictive, she got the SoS nomination as a consolation prize. Let's hope she lets the VP, UN Ambassador, Sec. of Defense, handle foreign policy, while she works to keep Bill out of trouble.

I am not sure whether those are your thoughts as well, but my comment is, "Exactly."
Those who are old enough to have followed the Clinton presidency closely know that it was hijacked by the Clinton scandals. Old or new, the scandals were ripe for the picking, for the Republicans and press to wrap around every Clinton move, leaving the Clintons scrambling and defensive, with no hope of an honourable legacy.
I fear that the Obama presidency will also be hijacked by the same Clinton scandals, dusted off by the Republicans and the press; wrapped around Hillary Clinton's every move as Secretary of State, leaving Obama defending his choice and jeopardizing his chances of being a great international leader.
Remember this post!! Past behaviour is the best predictor of future results. (Behaviour with "our"!!)

The reality is the Secretary of State is the one cabinet member that needs to be seen as being closest and most trusted by the President...otherwise the SOS is worthless...the SOS main asset is that when you meet with him/her, you are meeting with the President, this person is a representative of the President..you are talking to the President when you talk to them....
If the SOS and President aren't close they can't be effective getting anything done meeting with world leaders...they just can't...
Bush's father..George H.W. Bush had a secretary of state he was friends with before he trusted and as a result the guy was very effective...
Obama obviously feels he can have a close, trusting relationship with her otherwise he wouldn't pick her for that spot...

Here's what I am hoping for politically in the near future:
*proper and thorough 9/11 investigation.
*end to the "war on terror" (whatever that is)
*impeachment hearings
*war crimes trials/ crimes against humanity against members of BushCo./CheneyCo.
*investigation into oil price manipulation in past two years
*proper investigation into 2001 anthrax attacks
*proper investigation into false statements/forged documents that led us into Iraq war
*investigation into Henry Paulson and the "bailout" plan
That's just the tip of the iceberg my friends. I know it is somewhat unrealistic, and I know that Bush and Cheney have intentionally left us with more problems than we think we can handle, but I won't give up until justice is served.
I'll do it myself if I have to.
Too many laws have been broken, too many people killed and tortured, too much too much!
We can do it all AND save the economy.
Who's with me?
happy new year.....

Happy New Year everyone. I'm posting this article. It doesn't necessarily reflect my views, I just wanted to share.
NEITHER CHRIST NOR ANTI-CHRIST: A REFLECTION ON THE ELECTION OF BARACK OBAMA
Millions of Americans believe they have found a savior. President-Elect Obama and Democrats in Congress will rally the economy; they will end wars; they will set the captives free. But what happens when messiahs fail? What happens when promises of hope are met by realities of despair? What happens if prosperity eludes us? What happens if violence and terrorism abound? What happens if change results in more of the same in Washington and the world? Americans must be ready for this. Otherwise, we may be preparing ourselves for a fall of edenic proportions.
After the election was called for Senator Obama (thank goodness it didn’t go into the next day or weeks), it felt like the biblical “day of Jubilee” was upon us. Pro-Obama crowds were euphoric as the revolution was seemingly televised. There was dancing and singing. Tears flowed. Everyone commented on the “historic” moment. Senator McCain sought to wash the historic story as one for African Americans, but he was only partly right. The entire campaign—for both Democrats and Republicans—was an historic event. It was an emblem of how far the United States has changed, and we should all be proud of that. One hundred years ago, an African American man was lynched in the United States every five days. National votes for women were still a dozen years away. One hundred years ago W. E. B. Du Bois had to defend the “souls” of black folks against claims that African Americans were soulless beasts. One hundred years ago, divorce laws made it next-to-impossible for women to divorce their husbands. Read the rest here:

OBAMA WRAPS UP HIS HAWAIIAN VACATION
KAILUA, Hawaii, Jan. 1 -- President-elect Barack Obama bid adieu to his native Hawaii on Thursday, wrapping up his 13-day pre-inaugural vacation with a morning workout before returning home to Chicago.
Obama is scheduled to arrive in Chicago early Friday morning and will spend just over 48 hours at home before moving his family to Washington on Sunday, in time for his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, to begin classes at Sidwell Friends School. The future first family will stay at the historic Hay-Adams Hotel, just steps from the White House, before moving to Blair House on Jan. 15.
Obama concluded a relaxing respite in Hawaii during which he remained largely secluded at a seaside vacation compound with his wife, Michelle, their daughters, and several friends from Chicago and their families. The president-elect maintained a relatively low profile in Hawaii, some days venturing out in public only for his morning workout at a Marine Corps base.
Making his last stop at the gym Thursday morning, Obama was greeted by about 20 onlookers. "We love having you with us," one woman told the president-elect. Obama shook hands, posed for pictures and signed autographs with a red Sharpie.
"I wish I could hang out with you, but I've got to go home," Obama told the crowd.
Twice, Obama took his daughters on outings, including visiting the Honolulu Zoo, taking in a dolphin show at a marine park and stopping for shave ice, one of his favorite local treats. Early in the trip, Obama and his family attended a private memorial service for his maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who died of cancer at 86 on the eve of the presidential election.
Obama's aides have not said how the family celebrated the new year, and offered few details about how they spent Christmas. The family had a natural cut tree in their vacation home, opened presents Christmas morning, and enjoyed a traditional dinner of turkey and ham. On Dec. 25, the president-elect visited military families eating Christmas dinner at the Marine base.
President Bush, ending his own holiday respite, is scheduled to return to Washington today from his ranch in Crawford, Tex. Bush and the first lady have been away from the White House since Dec. 23, when they went to Camp David before leaving for Texas three days later.

President-elect Barack Obama will probably tear down long-standing barriers between the U.S.’s civilian and military space programs to speed up a mission to the moon amid the prospect of a new space race with China.
Obama’s transition team is considering a collaboration between the Defense Department and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration because military rockets may be cheaper and ready sooner than the space agency’s planned launch vehicle, which isn’t slated to fly until 2015, according to people who’ve discussed the idea with the Obama team.

RE: your son's education
You can save a great deal of money by buying his college books on Half.com (by the way, this isn't an ad - it's just a fact) The college bookstores do NOT give you a good deal - sure they're easier, however, you can save hundreds of dollars, each semester, by using Half.com - or maybe they can put their ads up on the college bulletin boards.
Our son's now into his master's and our daughter is still in college - I've got to say this is significant savings.
We 'encouraged' our son with having him be responsible for at least part of his college education with Student Loans. However - the better grades he made, the less student loans he'd have at the end of his degree.
So - I guess he did the Math - he didn't end up the top of his class, but he really did make the most of his education and also helped him get into his masters program.

I took care of my mother at home for the last five years of her life (as she wished) and I feel that was and is the absolute best thing I will ever do in my life. She had also taken care of her mother the last five years of her life, so it was like the family tradition!
My mother was a dignified lady with a fabulous sense of humor every day of her 84 years until she left us.
I'm hoping the time you spend with your dad will be as memorable as my experience (no matter how tired I got!). As an example, my mother's mind wasn't too good at the end and one night she said out of the blue, "You shouldn't be doing this on a Saturday night - you should be out dancing!" I smiled and told her not to worry about me - I was planning to use helping her as my ticket into heaven, where I was sure I'd be dancing!

President-elect Barack Obama bid his native Hawaii “aloha” today after a 12-day vacation.
The plane carrying Obama, wife Michelle and their two young daughters left Honolulu Airport today just after 1 p.m.
The family left their kailua vacation rental home at 12:21 p.m and drove slowly in a 19-vehicle motorcade through Kailua.
Obama waved from inside his black SUV to hundreds of local residents who lined the streets. Some residents sported swimsuits and summer hats, waved American flags and flashed the “shaka” sign as the presidential motorcade passed. A few residents waved ti leaves.
The Obamas arrived at Honolulu Airport at 12:55 p.m. Barack and Michelle Obama took pictures on the tarmac with airport workers before jogging up the steps to board their United Airlines charter Boeing 767.
They were set to fly to Chicago and expected to arrive early Friday. Obama planned to fly on Sunday to Washington, where 7-year-old Sasha and 10-year-old Malia start school on Monday.

Isn't this going to look to the average American that the Democrats are picking who gets to be a Senator or not?
I know this is probably off-topic and I apologize for that but I'm just so upset on how this is going to play politically that I just can't believe it.
Frankly, it kind of irks me that they could just give Lieberman a big hug after slightly looking sternly in his direction and then let it play twice an hour on CNN that they're having the only African-American "Senator" removed by the police!

I Also blame Fritzgerald because he knew that he didn't have all of the evidence that he needed to go after Blagojevich, yet he went ahead and had his big "press conference" against Blago without the proper evidence and he had the nerve to hinder/ask President-Elect Barack Obama not release his own personal investigation info until a week later. I also recall that when Fritzgerald went after scooter libby, he had the audacity to let the masterminds (Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Robert Novak) of the Valarie Plame Outing-Gate get a free pass.
Patrick Fritz. now wants an extra 3 months to get his case together.
My question Is...Can Blagojevich get the Prosecutor's evidence and case against him thrown out?

That's the one time Reid DID stand up when he was all for removing Joe Lie. from his chairmanship! PEO "let it be known" that he wasn't in favor of that and Reid and others backed off. And rightly so because PEO didn't want either to apppear vincdictive and/or wanted to make sure Joe Lie. would still vote dem when needed.
If Reid had pushed it then he would have been seen as undermining PEO similar to Barney Frank and his recent comments/criticisms.
This is why I largely ignore the media. It's their job to make sure there's always a tempest in a teapot. This too will play out in it's own way and time.

"The democrats should stick to that"...
I agree. It's the media, egged on by Bobby Rush, Bloyagovich himself and Burris who are making this a racial controversy. Reid and the dems had said NO ONE appointed by Blog. would be seated. To me that means no one, black, white, male, female, Hispanic, gay, straight, et al. If it is legally possible I hope the dems do not back down and seat this man. (I am AA and am as offended by Blog. & gang trying to play this race card as anyone else! I want the BEST person to assist PEO AND one who will be a viable candidate in 2012).
Burris is making an ass of himself by not only accepting this appointment, but pushing for it! Who the heck would want to sit in a body with a group of people they know didn't want them? Plus, he is hurting the dems' chances in 2012 if he is only interesting in completing PEO's term as he has stated.
To me, if Burriss truly had the state of IL's best interests at heart, along with the success of PEO and the democratic party, he wouldn't allow himself to be a pawn in this mess. Or, perhaps it's "pay to play" politics? Either way I wish he would stand down. If not, let the dems put him out.

Mr. Burris may or may not be a honorable man but he sure doesn't mind using a few dishonorable methods and tactics to get Barack Obama's Old Senate Seat.

It is an insult to IL for Burr to hide behind a "call of duty" in accepting Blagos appointment and then start flushing the race card bizarre drama that is not helpful. Obama was not Senator because he was AA, he simply was the best and beat competition in IL earning every right to the seat. If Burr is so desperate to serve he should not be pawning for Blago to beat competition.

There is just no way Burris should be allowed to have the seat - the very seat the Governor was trying to leverage for himself. It is ridiculous. This appointment has everything to do with politics and nothing to do with the health of our country and the state of IL. It is very sad.
If Burris was to be seated, he would be shunned, no one would trust him, as he is showing himself to be have questionable decision-making abilities. I'm glad Obama will be in D.C. on Monday and away from the circus that Blago is trying to create.
It's a shame because we, the American people and the people of IL, are losing out. We should have a functioning and controversy-free government pushing really hard for progress. Instead, the first few weeks (at least) will be clouded with this confusion over Burris and clouded by the Republicans using this to play political games.
This is an unbelievably selfish move by Blago. And Burris and Rush...crabs in a barrel.

Legally, you are probably right. Burris will be seated. And he will be shunned. The State of IL will have a very unliked Senator representing them in Burris, who is political kryptonite, due to this tie with Blago. So, no one will respect him and I doubt he would be allowed on any committees, or to participate meaningfully.

I would not advise Reid and others to block the swearing in or seating of Burris. They would be in violation of the 17th Amendment, and Burris will file charges against them. Legally, Blago is still Governor of Illinois, and has the power to appoint whomever. The Dem Senators have no idea of the fire that they are starting particularly when the GOP is anxiously trying to recruit African American voters.

For the Republican "Magic Negro" party to try and spin this into something that could be a problem for the Dems, in terms of race, is very funny. I think it's more of a problem if they do not call Burris and Blago out for this ethically-tone deaf stunt.
As a black person - I get what they, Blago and Burris, are up to. And it's not cool. A legit concern that there aren't any black US Senators is now being used as a political ploy. That hurts the cause.

Thanks. I read that, and I don't buy it. I understand what this Ruben guy is trying to do. Now he wants to relitigate the racially insensitive remarks from the primary. He wants to show that Dems are hollow when it comes to race relations. That's fine, but are we to pivot to the open-minded Republican party? Doubt that.
These Republicans think they're cute. If black people really decide that this is a racial issue, then we're in big trouble. It's a racial issue, in that Blago is trying to cause trouble within the Dem Party.
The issue is that Blago is ACCUSED BY THE FEDS and ON TAPE trying to SELL the SENATE SEAT. And while being accused, he has decided to appoint someone to that seat. Yes, he has the legal right to do it, but this is an ethically wrong appointment. And like lawyers, doctors, teachers, judges, and other professionals, there are ethical standards that should be adhered to. This is not about Burris as a person/politician/black potential Senator.

Sole, this is exactly how I view pro-choice and christianity. I am PERSONNALLY pro-life, however, do not take the position of judgement over others' decisions. The book of Romans says "only ONE can judge". (Capital 'O' meaning no one down here).
Christianity is a personal relationship with one's God and responsibility for one's own choices. I don't agree with a bunch of (usually) older men and women to legislate what a woman chooses to do with her body and that has no impact on my relationship between my God and me.
Some may say that's wrong; I say it's neither right nor wrong. It is simply MY christian belief.

My problem is not that I am not pro-life, I am pro-life and I also believe that any woman who decides to abort a child is a sinner, however, who am I to judge? So called conservatives put themselves in place of God and try to legislate human choice, I will never be part of that. Everybody should be free to choose, even if it is a foolish choice. I have to be free to choose whatever I want to be in life including whatever I want to do on my body, that includs tatooing by the way!

Aired April 13, 2008 ---
Democratic Candidates Compassion Forum at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania. Back-to-back interviews by faith leaders, moderated by Jon Meacham (editor of Newsweek) and CNN...
BROWN: Let's take a question from Reverend Samuel Rodriguez, who is with us. He is president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.
Reverend?
REV. SAMUEL RODRIGUEZ, PRESIDENT, NATIONAL HISPANIC LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: Senator Obama, the vast majority of Americans believe that abortion is a decision to be made by a woman, her family and her doctors. However, the vast majority of Americans similarly believe that abortion is the taking of a human life.
The terms pro-choice and pro-life, do they encapsulate that reality in our 21st Century setting and can we find common ground?
OBAMA: I absolutely think we can find common ground. And it requires a couple of things. Number one, it requires us to acknowledge that there is a moral dimension to abortion, which I think that all too often those of us who are pro-choice have not talked about or tried to tamp down. I think that's a mistake because I think all of us understand that it is a wrenching choice for anybody to think about.
The second thing, once we acknowledge that, is to recognize that people of good will can exist on both sides. That nobody wishes to be placed in a circumstance where they are even confronted with the choice of abortion. How we determine what's right at that moment, I think, people of good will can differ.
And if we can acknowledge that much, then we can certainly agree on the fact that we should be doing everything we can to avoid unwanted pregnancies that might even lead somebody to consider having an abortion.
And we've actually made progress over the last several years in reducing teen pregnancies, for example. And what I have consistently talked about is to take a comprehensive approach where we focus on abstinence, where we are teaching the sacredness of sexuality to our children.
But we also recognize the importance of good medical care for women, that we're also recognizing the importance of age-appropriate education to reduce risks. I do believe that contraception has to be part of that education process.

I like this way of thinking....
1/2/09
General
From Rasmussen Reports
40% of voters now say Americas best days are in the future, marking the lowest level of optimism since early July.
45% of voters say the countrys best days are in the past, also the highest level of pessimism since July 4.
Democrats share more hope for the future than Republicans and unaffiliated voters. Over half (51%) of Democrats say the nations best days lie ahead, compared to 33% of Republicans and unaffiliated voters.
With a new year ahead, we all have the opportunity to change our lives and hope for a brighter future. In a recent Rasmussen telephone poll, though, some Americans feel that America's best days are in the past. This author disagrees.
Part of what makes America so great is her optimism and ingenuity, and even though we all are facing tough economic times, this author yet feels that the best times are yet to come.
As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, "there is nothing to fear but fear itself," and in this context, we all must not fear the unknown but embrace the possibility of a better tomorrow.
SOME PEOPLE JUST AREN'T HAPPY UNLESS THEY'RE DRIVING ANOTHER PERSON CRAZY..... |

Marilyn,
This article needs a little more teaser info. I love the writing. But it is my kind of tongue in cheek kind of writing.
Jan. 2, 2009 | Of all the economic earthquakes that racked the global economy in 2008, one temblor ranks supreme. Alan Greenspan's declaration to Congress on Oct. 23: "I made a mistake."
In those four words can be heard the crumbling of at least three decades of ideological dominance. Technically speaking, Greenspan was acknowledging that he had misjudged the private sector's ability to manage risk in a largely deregulated environment. After all the carnage on Wall Street in 2008, the conclusion, even to Greenspan, was inescapable: High finance's best and brightest had proved incapable of understanding their own business.
How did we get here?

We will be mulling over the extraordinary economic events of 2008 for years to come. We could have plenty of morbid fun, right now, reliving the nightmare in horrific detail: the collapse of the subprime-mortgage-backed securities market; the demise of Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch; the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers; the "rescue" of AIG; the great drama of the fight to authorize the Troubled Assets Relief Program, complete with John McCain's ludicrous, and revelatory, campaign "suspension," and the sight of Hank Paulson on bended knee before Nancy Pelosi. We would be remiss not to note the wild swings in all kinds of commodity prices, not least the surge of gas and oil prices to record highs, followed by an even more amazing tumble.
A historically unprecedented implosion of the U.S. residential housing market achieved the previously unthinkable:
The American consumer juggernaut halted dead in its tracks.
Oh, and the economy played a critical role in the outcome of an epochal presidential election. No little thing, that.
And finally, as the year came to a close, we can try to enjoy our holidays while wondering whether the really bad stuff is only just getting started. 2009 could be much worse than 2008.
..... there's more, (Marilyn gave the link but here it is again)

*****but here's the last line******
Alan Greenspan made a mistake. And a new world is born.

Should we continue to support the corrupt Afghan government? The situation there is worse then I thought. Here's a couple paragraphs from an article. For the remainder, click on the URL.
"Kept afloat by billions of dollars in American and other foreign aid, the government of Afghanistan is shot through with corruption and graft.
The decay of the Afghan government presents Barack Obama with perhaps his most under-appreciated challenge as he tries to reverse the course of the war here. The president-elect may be required to save the Afghan government, not only from the Taliban insurgency - committing thousands of additional American soldiers to do so - but also from itself."

What I want for Christmas
Richard Elrick
December 26, 2008
... what I really want is less special interest politics and more renewable energy.
... on Cape Cod, whether the Cape Wind renewable energy project will be built.
...
Cape Wind’s opponents to try to scuttle the badly needed project, concerns the recent Coast Guard effort to determine the potential effects the project’s wind turbines will have on mariners’ radars. As a long-time Nantucket Sound ferry boat captain, this is certainly an issue about which I have some interest and knowledge.
At the Coast Guard’s invitation I, along with many other Nantucket Sound stake holders, took part in a recent roundtable ... meeting was part of an ongoing process whereby the Coast Guard, a cooperating agency in the federal permitting of Cape Wind, lead by the Minerals Management Service (MMS), was tasked to determine whether the wind turbines posed any potential navigation risks, either to mariners or to the ability of the Coast Guard to undertake search and rescue missions.
After considering a number of studies on the radar issue, Capt. Raymond Perry, Coast Guard Captain for the port of southeast New England, reported that the Cape Wind project was “doable,” and posed no unreasonable dangers to navigation that couldn’t effectively be mitigated. Capt. Perry’s findings certainly conform to my experience as a navigator and radar user on Nantucket Sound, but equally important, is consistent with the European wind farm experience, where after more than a decade, and with hundreds of turbines located even closer to main navigation channels than is proposed for Cape Wind, not a single example of a collision has ever been cited.
Cape Wind’s opponents have attacked the Coast Guard.
...
They used their political connections inside the office of U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, to coerce the Coast Guard into delaying the formal release of its findings 30 days later
...
This delaying tactic has been the modus operandi of Cape Wind’s primary opponent, the so-called Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, since the regulatory review process began in 2001. At every stage, when the Alliance disapproved of a regulatory agency’s fact and science-based findings, they attacked the process and integrity of those agencies.

Throughout last night’s New Year’s eve broadcast, Fox News Channel allowed viewers to send in New Year’s greetings and wishes via text message. The messages were then scrolled across the bottom of the screen, replacing Fox’s normal crawling news headlines. While most messages were cordial, Fox allowed at least one racist message directed toward President-elect Obama to be broadcast. The message referenced Rush Limbaugh’s “Barack the Magic Negro” song:
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C.

The best way to discredit people FOX News and their pundits is to do the right thing for the country which means get this economy turned around, help this country gain the respect it lost over the last eight years and solve the health care system problems.
We as his supporters need to have our representatives in the House and Senate contact numbers and e-mail addresses so that we can let them know that we back the plans and policies of President Obama.

Funny you should say about FOX news...
"...why Fox will rarely ever be called on in news conferences..."
One of favorite lines from Obama during campaign was the night of the Al Smith "roast" in Wash DC at which he and Sen McCain traded their funniest remarks...
The one I liked best was when in reference to how "all the news networks" favored Obama...
Barack said to Sen McCain,
"How about FOX news John? Aren't THEY network news too?"

Several thoughts. Blago is no longer alone politically. He was really isolated. Leading African Americans are opposing each other now in Illinois with several prominent figures standing with him on this appointment.
And as someone said (I believe Hugh Hewitt) don't expect Blago to go quietly off to the clink. Blago has not to be thinking about the eventual book deal.

I haven't seen anything on reaction to a memoir by GW. Hadn't heard any discussion about writing one as of yet. I have heard that Laura has already been approached to write her memoirs. At least a 5 mil offer I hear. That will sell pretty well, don't you think?
As to presidential books being refused by publishers, I can't say I'm aware of it. They (former presidents) are all approached eventually, I'd think.
With Blago, I think the publishers are chomping at the bit. I don't think he'll have to go to them. The more interesting things get, the more names involved, the higher the offers will be.

Speaking of New Year's, I got an interesting present, though it wasn't exactly the one I was expecting.
On December 10th, I received an email offer from Barackobama.com for a fleece jacket for $50. The email said that if the order was placed right away I would get delivery before the 25th. So I sent in my $50 on the assigned fleece URL contribution page.
Finally, five days late, on the 30th, the shipment arrived. And it wasn't the fleece at all; it was the T-shirt, something I never wear and of which I cannot make use.
What do I do now? How do I get my fleece? Who do I contact? Waht are the proper procedures to fix this? Thaks.

Over the past 40 years the Palestinians have made it their goal to erradicate Israel. They have launched murderous suicide bombers. They are launching rockets into Israel. Is Israel suppose to just do nothing. After we were attacked on 9/11 should we have just said oh well. Or do you see it as Israels and America's fault.
I do hope Barack Obama is successful as President. However, he is not in office yet and the campaign is much different than real life.
He is not going to increase taxes
He is not going to increase taxes on corpprations
He should leave the capital gains at 15%
He is not going to be able to provide Universal Healthcare
People are going to have to take care of themselves.
There was a previous post about someone complaining they only made $21,000 per year
My question to them is why?
What have you done to improve your self?
How can you help your self to do better?
During Obama's acceptance speach one women was taped saying now that Obama is in I dont have to worry about retirment, my mortgage. or healthcare.
So many Obama supporters have this sense of entitlement and seem to have forgoten that this country was built on being self sufficient, providing for themselves, and not believing the government is their to take care of you.

Why is it the this situation in Gaza is Barack’s problem. Why is it America’s problem? Can’t we say it’s NATO’s problem at least, let France and England and Canada, etc. help out the situation too. It's not just Barack's problem. We’ve got enough on our plate right now.
I have been watching the news and it occurs to me that there are three sides to every story, your version, their version and the truth.
Several people and all of the palestinian and Hamas supporters have come on the national news over the course of this war to say that Israelis started bombing gaza first.
All of the Americans and all of the Israeli supporters have said that Hamas broke the cease fire and they are just retaliating.
It makes me wonder what exactly is the truth is and who do you get the true story from. Someone is lying but how would we ever know. If somehow through thorough investigation it could be proven beyond a shadow of doubt who first broke the cease fire, it could be a great negotiating tool to end the conflict.
It saddens me that innocents have to die

A, I hear ya. But he's not president yet. I will be loud and clear about my opinions once he's inaugurated. This senseless destruction has to stop. I hope Obama will take a stand on this once he is the president. Until then, W is responsible. And he's a coward....he's leaving it to Obama. We only have one president at a time.
The whole reason the Israelis are doing this now is because of the long transition time between presidents. I bet money that they stop once Obama is inaugurated. But right now they are busy creating facts on the ground in order to better their position for when Obama becomes President. Palestine will get a worse deal than they had because of Israeli intransigience now. And everyone will blame Obama even though its not his fault. It's the Israeli's fault and the international community needs to hold them accountable to their peace agreements and promises. Instead they seem to get away with murder.

Rich, whether or not they created a personal profile or not, I think this person has a valid opinion. I disagree with him that Obama needs to do something about it now, but it is an issue that Obama will need to take up after Jan 20th.

Then why doesn't the person create a profile then ?
The bloggers who criticize Obama often don't have personal profiles and come here on one issue, hit-and-run type posts.
If you want to be part of a community and part of CHANGE, then that's a small step to take to create a profile.
As for Jan 20, IMO Obama will need to focus on taking care of Americans first (not the Saudis, not the Israelis, not the Palestinians). Bush did enough of taking care of others first and did little to address problems we have at home.

And I will lobby Obama after Jan 20th, not on this blog, but through other venues on this issue. I know it is controversial and I will just say I will agree to disagree with you and others here on this site on this.

Who is Israel going to negotiate with. Hamas has pledged to wipe out Israel.
Hamas is a terrorist organization
You cannot negotiate with them. The Palestinian people need to accept responsibility as well and demand that these murderers in Hamas stop their actions. Israel would not go on the offensive if Hamas did not murder.
It is ugly but some times force is the only means to have peace.
In World war II should we have negotiated with Axis powers.

Exactly. Israel has no one to negotiate with in Hamas. A futile task negotiating with Hamas that has repeatedly pledged their only course with Israel is jihad. You cannot negotiate with this group who will never be satisfied unless Israel ceases to exist. Why is Israel in this situation now? Because they withdrew from Gaza several years ago. What did they get? Rocket fire and mortar attacks continually as well as construction of tunnels for smuggling arms and personnel between Sinai (Egypt) and Gaza.
Egypt is now constructing a wall on their border with Gaza to try and stop the weapons flow to Hamas. They are blowing up tunnels on their end. Good.

My plans for the new year are simple: Spread information concerning the governments lies of the benign plant cannabis sativa and to make sure that you, Barack Obama, keep your promises to end federal raids on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in states which have legalized its medical use(A position you seems too cowardly to support due to the many backwards minded lobbyists hands in your pocket). Also i expect you to pardon the victims of minor marijuana offenses which should be decriminalized. If you don't do this, you're a hypocrite and you should put yourself in jail because you were once a cannabis consumer yourself and the mandatory minimum sentence for such an activity is one year in jail and a thousand dollar fine Mr. Obama

"My attitude is if the science and the doctors suggest that the best palliative care and the way to relieve pain and suffering is medical marijuana then that's something I'm open to because there's no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain,” Obama said. “But I want to do it under strict guidelines. I want it prescribed in the same way that other painkillers or palliative drugs are prescribed.” - Barack Obama (11.07.07)
Hmmm...morphine is Schedule 2 meaning that doctors have to file a prescription with the DEA. Strict, controlled guidelines. If marijuana would have legal access like morphine and other drugs to control pain and suffering, I'd say so long to the marijuana dispensaries in California and so long to the idea of allowing people to grow their own, like in Michigan, for example. In fact, under schedule 2 all state initiatives will end as I understand it.

Japanese Private $1 Billion Li-Ion Battery Investment Shames US
posted by Kit Eaton
While Li-ion battery makers in the US are going cap-in-hand to the government in search of federal aid to keep up with foreign companies, it's been rumored that Nissan and NEC are about to invest around $1 billion of their own capital into making batteries for electric cars.
...
The new venture will be dubbed the Automotive Energy Supply Corp., and may also consider factory locations in Europe or, ironically, the US--locations made attractive by government incentives for green-tech factories. The AESC also plans to deliver power units to other companies for inclusion in their electric vehicles. Nissan is partnering with Renault, for example, to produce its own hybrid and all-electric cars.
The automotive industry may be about to reinvent itself, it seems.

The sad thing is that because of "politics" and the lack of pressure from the PUBLIC(US), these technologies will not surface. They could solve so many of our problems and help save the earth...yet some powerful groups will never let go of the POWER.

Bi-Partisan-Working together Agreement!
Watching CSPAN this morning….
… an interview with Senator Pete V. Domenici, NM on his pending retirement from the Senate, and learned the following information:
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) today praised final House passage of legislation that includes their bipartisan mental health parity agreement that will improve mental health coverage for an estimated 113 million Americans.
In approving the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (HR.1424) Friday, the House also agreed to a tax extenders package that includes the mental health parity legislation.
The package will now be sent to President Bush, who has indicated his support for the measure.
Final passage of the parity legislation and its expected enactment culminates years of effort by Domenici, Kennedy, Enzi and Dodd.
The Senators made it a priority to enact new legislation in the 110th Congress to build on the 1996 Mental Health Parity Act authored by Domenici and the late Senator Paul Wellstone, who died in 2002.
“We are ushering in a new era of health care for those with mental illnesses.
No longer will we allow mental health to be treated as a stepchild in the health care system. If you have insurance, then your mental health care must be equal to the benefits you get for any other disease,” Domenici said.
“I appreciate all the partners I’ve had in this long, long effort but most especially Senator Kennedy, who has been remarkable and stepped up to this work after Paul Wellstone’s tragic death.”

Hope that all of you realize the importance of the passage of this bill, which obligates insurance companies to insure Mental Illness, as they would any other disease or illness!

Anyway, things grew only more awkward from there, as Scarborough batted the insult hither and to, while Mika rolled around in her chair, totally chagrined. The show finally, mercifully, cuts to commercial (over the strains of Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious" -- apparently the closest thing the producers had to "superficial'). At that point, Scarborough directed Mika to give her father six dollars to make the mean man go away. Anyway, enjoy.

Dr. Brzezinski is well versed in the Middle East. Scarborough reminded me of Sarah Palin attempting to be engaged in an interview. He was turning red after Brzezinski nailed him. It was hilarious!!! By the way in my opinion Brzezinski was correct---you don't allow a breakdown in communication between the two sides which Bush allowed.

My pleasure. I hadn't heard about this until a poster above mentioned it. Then I had to look it up. I've missed the show a lot over the holidays but usually like it because Joe has many interesting guests.
I guess we disagree on the content though. I thought Joe handled himself pretty well. I think the good doctor was absolutely rude and belittling on a personal level. Did not speak well for his own elegence in my view. And it was totally unnecessary as well. Joe showed a lot of class, and restraint, as host.
I also don't think Bush has allowed a breakdown. We've seen a lot under Bush and I can say this as a person who did not vote for him and criticizes him plenty. For example, we saw the first free elections there under Bush. We also saw under Bush the Israelis pull out their settlements in the Gaza Strip which is something that the Palis really desired. Maybe that helped a little but alone it was not enough.
As I stated in another post, I think the real failure is that the people themselves aren't necessarily buying into what their leaders are doing for them. I don't think the Palestinian people are being sufficiently engaged and educated on the value of these compromises by Israel. In fact, I think very many of them see these concessions as their own "victories" and as losses and weakness from the Israelis. I think this is the general mindset of many of these people. I think that is a lot of the problem.

Victoria, I don't know. These groups have been fighting since B.C. The Palestinians are the Philistines of the the Old Testament. I don't think that they will ever stop hating each other. The best that the U.S. can do is to negotiate peace agreements with them when necessary. There will not be "durable and sustainable" agreements because neither side wants it to happen.

It turns out that Dr. Brezinski was correct in what he said about Israel and Palestine negotiations when President Bush was first elected.
I would like to see morning shows like Morning Joe do their homework to ensure the truth gets out.
The thing I did not like was that after that segment, Joe Scarborough has a former administrative official of Bush to indicate that Joe was right in his assessement of the negotiations.
We need a government that will be honest with us regardless how bad the news may be or the size of the mistake. We can not learn from our past if the truth is not told.

What did I hear? A lot of excuses for failed efforts under Clinton, and a false notion that Bush did nothing. Also a claim tha Israel's response to the Hamas has been "disproportionate" while minimizing the significance of Joe's comment that it seems the problem gets very little attention in the world community until Israel responds or "overreacts" as I think Joe called it.
I think Ziggie is dead wrong when he says the attitude or positions of other nations aren't that important, particularly those nations in the ME. It's very important to put this pressure and censure on people and it does have an impact. I'm thankful that Egypt is building a wall to prevent smuggling to prevent smuggling as well as blowing up the tunnels Hamas has constructed. It seems that every day new tunnels are located. This is very helpful in physical terms but it also sends a strong message to the Hamas and the Palestinian People.
I also think Ziggie failed dismally to acknowledge that a lot of the problem under Clinton and Bush was the failure to recognize that just because Palestinian leaders are shaking hands with Israel in front of international cameras, that their people will automatically accept the agreements reached on their behalf. Almost nothing was done to engage the people, convince them via TV, newspapers, schoolbooks, etc., and with force where necessary that they must recognize Israel and Israel's RIGHT TO SECURITY.
This is the point. Many concessions have been made by Israel over the years in the process toward "peace" with the Palestinians. Even in 2005 when Israel withdrew settlements in Gaza, etc. A division of land is needed, yes, a coming to terms and compromise. But first, the Palestinians must accept Israel's right to exist and Israel's right to security.
Nothing can happen until this occurs. And for Zig to say that the constant rockets, arms smuggling tunnels, etc., were simply "annoying" because there was no loss of life is utterly ridiculous. I can remember when buses were being blown up every week in Israel.

Actually, Dr. Brzezinski stated that the peace negotiations were in place at the end of Clinton's administration. They went nowhere as usual when Bush took office. He also criticized Condoleeza Rice for making 16 trips to the Middle East in 20 months if I remember correctly with demands but no facilitation of peace.

Many years of intense work and negotiations and what did it provide throughout the 90s, under Clinton. Thousands dead and much suffering on both sides, mass poverty for Palestians, economic decline for the Israelis as well as increased diplomatic isolation and censure for the Israelis. When Bush took office they were killing each other in mass.

Condi Rice should have recommended more peace initiatives. I agree with Brzezinski that we cannot allow communication to break down. Once this happens, it pretty much is over in their eyes. Open dialogue between the sides is necessary. Condi just mentioned on CNN that we need a durable and sustainable cease fire. Well, this should have been the goal from the beginning.

To Francoise from Marysville, WA
If you are out of work, YOU SHOULD BE looking for a job?
What else?
Do you expect the President of the United States to knock on YOUR door and hand you employment?
Get real youngster...
During the Great Depression, grown-up family men "rode the rails" so they could get off the train at communities along the tracks, to beg for work to feed their families.
They always asked to do odd jobs, as they were too proud to beg.
My mother told me about men who would knock on the back door and ask for work, to do anything to buy food for those at home.
She said there was a woodpile out back...
She'd tell the man it needed to be moved over to the other side of the yard.
After he was through with the chore, he'd get a bowl of soup, and a quarter.
(A day's wages then!)
The next man that came to knock on the back door would get the same instructions...
That the woodpile needed to be moved to the other side of the yard.
Then he'd get the bowl of soup, and a quarter.
That's how Americans made it through the Great Depression of the 1930's....
People were too proud to beg...
They went out in search of a job...
Men WANTED to work.
They WANTED to be paid for their WORK!

We are appalled at the ongoing massacre of innocent civilians in Gaza by the Israelis and the silence of the western world’s leadership. It is as if the Holocaust of the Jews was beginning all over again, only with a different people. We sincerely hope that upon your inauguration you will truly bring “change we can believe in.” We as Americans are at a terrible crossroads: we can either maintain the status quo of blind support of Israel’s inhumane policies toward Palestinians at the cost of our own interests and values; or we can once again claim our position as a beacon of human rights and respect for the value of life in the world.

A new diplomacy is the only way out of this catastrophe. What we are witnessing is the complete failure of the old diplomatic motifs. On blog sights around the world many commentators from the first minute of this conflict pretty much knew what the "Official Line" of the Bush Administration would be. No surprise. What's hypocritical to the extreme is that this has been the "Official Line" for over 50 years. Failure in diplomacy should never be honored because all human honor is lost. It's time for a new diplomacy that junks the "stick and carrot" approach to the dust bins of history. (Western politicians like to call it the carrot and stick approach for their own reasons). We need a new diplomacy that plans and wholeheartly executes a peace between Israel and Palestine that will open new paths for the bright future of humankind. Look where fear and old grudges have led us. Just look at the vast expenditures on militaries. Add all the military expenditures together and it would shock the world citizens. Yes, military spending that derivitive that must only discussed behind closed doors. Those same doors are not closed to the warmakers and arms dealers. Let's compile a study on politicians worldwide who receive money from the military-industrial complex. That report will shock the worlds citizens also. Yes we need a new diplomacy that worships peace. Military budgets are discussed within the borders of each nation (those state secrets). Let's have a world forum and let each nation explain its military budget on television and internet. Old fears cost dearly. Yes old fears and ways cost so dearly that those vast sums spent on the ways of war could provide free health care and a beautiful home, a clean and elegantly beautiful environment for every citizen of this bejeweled planet. Yes the old ways die hard but die they must. Now is the time for a new and beautiful diplomacy of peace and friendship for all nations. The champions of war and the old diplomacy are few (but their coffers overflow with money). We are the vast ocean of love and serenity. Yes we can build and design a new world of peace and dignity. Now is the time for a new language, a new diplomacy of peace and cooperation.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. And I am very scared about what is going on in Gaza right now too.
I remember, I got to talk to some young Palestinian men when I was in Iraq in the late 90's (a Red Cross/Red Crescent mission for health care reasons). I had never seen blind passionate hate to that level...when I looked into their eyes as they discussed Palestine vs. Isreal I was very frightened that hate could be that strong. And I am sure it is equally strong on the Isreali side. This is an energy that has spiraled out of control, almost to the point that people are beyond being reasoned with to find a peaceful solution. I learned that from their eyes and "feeling" them as they spoke to me.
I want to believe that our world can move past WAR as a solution. Its barbaric, rediculous and we all know on this Earth that we can do better. I hope that instead of fueling the disagreement and controversy that surrounds this issue that we can at least agree that no one should be dying and we have to find a better way--enough suffering. I have hope that Barack will bring his integrity to this issue. Enough war and killing.

NOT JUST TWO TWO SIDES!
Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, Ramallah, West Bank Fatah party
vs.
GAZA Radical Islamic movement, Hamas Party
Read excerpts from the following article.
You'll see that it's the Radical HAMAS party that doesn't want peace...
Palestinian's Fatah party, West Bank, does want to cooperate with Israel!
Abbas Meets West Bank Hamas Leaders
JERUSALEM, Nov. 2
The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, met Friday with a group of Hamas leaders in the West Bank, the first time he has done so since SINCE HAMAS ROUTED FATAH FORCES in GAZA in June.
Mr. Abbas, of the Fatah faction, said the meeting in his Ramallah office was not the beginning of a formal dialogue with Hamas.
Instead, it seemed to be an effort to split more moderate Hamas officials in the West Bank from their more militant brethren in Gaza.
Mr. Abbas has been cooperating with Israeli and American efforts to isolate Hamas in Gaza, and increase pressure on its leaders, there by closing it off to normal trade or travel, either through Israel or Egypt.
In Gaza, a more militant Hamas wing appears to be in control.
When Ghazi Hamad, a former Haniya spokesman who is a relative moderate, wrote an internal letter three months ago calling for negotiations with Israel, political openness and re-engagement with Fatah, he was pushed to repudiate his words when they became public.
Mr. Hamad, who has said that the takeover of Gaza by Hamas was a reactive mistake, has been told to keep silent, as has another Haniya adviser, Ahmed Yousef, who had tried to present a more moderate Hamas face to Europe and the West.
But others in Fatah party, West Bank, agree with Israel and Washington that Hamas’s call for dialogue is disingenuous, that it has no intention of giving up control in Gaza and that it will act to disrupt any progress toward peace with Israel.

This is pretty much how I feel about our role in this whole issue.
Even Obama can't solve the Middle East problem - and he'd be foolish to try
Hopes are pinned on President-Elect Obama to fix the Middle East crisis, but without strong leaders on either side, he doesn't stand a chance, argues our Diplomatic Editor

Civil war between Palestinian’s divided leadership
The following excerpt from the link you posted is what I attempted to say in my post up-thread;
That there are MORE than TWO Sides…
Palestinian’s are split into:
*Fatah Party, West Bank, and
*Radical Hamas party, Gaza!
... by contrast, the Palestinian national movement is split between its official leader, President Mahmoud Abbas, and the extremists of Hamas.
Israel deals with Abbas – and peace talks addressing all of the "core issues" have been taking place for more than a year.
Tzipi Livni, the foreign minister and a candidate for the premiership in the election due on February 10, has served as Israel's chief negotiator, meeting her Palestinian counterparts two or three times a week.
But even if Israel signed a comprehensive peace agreement with Abbas, no one believes it could be implemented.
Abbas, despised by many Palestinians as a Western stooge, simply does not have the stature to enact any deal.
Hamas would doubtless condemn a settlement and render it stillborn.
The civil war between this divided leadership means there is no worthwhile negotiating partner on the Palestinian side of the table

It's really interesting to watch how some will not face the fact that Israel is an occupying and aggressive force in Palestine. Americans should easily be able to relate to this fact because our nation has occupied and plundered numerous nations throughout our history. Let's be honest in our debates because history is best qualified to reward all research.

and I agree with him. The Israeli and Palestinian leaders are the only ones who can bring peace and stability to their people, and neither is willing.
Why the world believes America can force them to end the violence and to adopt peace is baffling.
We cannot save the world, and they would do better to look to their own leaders for peace and stability.

- The House is likely to pass an economic stimulus measure as large as $1 trillion by President- elect Barack Obama’s inauguration, predicted top Democrat Chris Van Hollen, who invited Republicans to help craft it.
“Our goal is, of course, to try to get this on his desk that day,” said Van Hollen of Maryland, an adviser to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a liaison between Congress and Obama’s transition team. “That may not be possible, but this is an urgent situation.”

The issue is his racial. My son was threatened to be lynched down here in Conroe,TX., and I've had my own experiences 1997,1992,1989, in Conroe twice and with Abilene Texas with racial profiling with law enforcement, and I was a deacon, a Preacher, and A Security Officer. My son's situation was as recent as October 12-23,2006,The Courier pages 1A,3A for 3 issues and it was all over the news down here.If that happened to my son and I , there are people who hate the color of his skin that will try to kill him or assassinate him. Thats why you should care enough to look below the surface and read the articles I cited. If you cared you'd know, but you don't care. We will see? Only God knows! The experts are associating "Obama" to the likes of Lincoln, Kennedy, and even Louis Farrakans Muslims are calling him the "Messiah". All great men who were before their time were "martyrd" Will He be one of them? We'd better pray for him! and America! I am a black minority with experiences of racism. What are your comments based on?

Oct 21, 2006 "Quannel X to Lead Protest",page 1A,3A;The Courier Mon, Oct 23, 2006 "Protesting Racism","Group Says CISD response weak", Page 1A,3A;If it happened to me, something greater may happen to him? thats why we should pray! These matters need to be discussed if not they will manifest in ways we don't want them to. President Obama!
We are facing huge fiscal problems. I haven't heard any of our trading partners offer to bail us out. They have a big stake in our recovery!
If they don't offer financial help, I say we slam all of them with import taxes. Especially the Chinese, Japanese and Arabs! If they want to peddle their goods in America, they can pay for it big time! Lets look out for America for a change. The world has a huge vested stake in our recovery. Lets make sure they participate in the process! Our success is their success! Without us they are DOOMED!

It is heartbreaking to see the bombing and invasion of Gaza. Yes, disasters and cruelties happen all over the world all the time, but this is a flagrant example of a huge military power bombing a concentration camp of its own making – a million and a half people that for years have been condemned to hunger, thirst, diseases, segregation and economic disaster, people who suffered cold-blooded murders and daily humiliations and injustices and are now collectively punished because -- in place of bending down to state terrorism -- they resisted and invented some ways of trying to escape their fate, like trade by tunnels…. I cannot quite believe how the collective guilt of the world for the Holocaust can justify acquiescing to the barbarity in front of our eyes. And this is not something new. Read this note written in 2003 by a former Minister of the state of Israel:
Link
. It seems written yesterday. Think back about the thousand people killed in Lebanon in 2006, and the four million cluster bomblets dropped there, of which half a million did not explode immediately and still today keep maiming and killing innocent people (and UN de-mining personnel). What did all of that achieve? Just deaths, pain, misery, enhanced insecurity for everyone, and the seeding of more hatred for years to come. Meanwhile, we - peace-loving, democratic, USA and EU citizens - keep discussing aeternal alliances and favorite economic partner status with Israel in cordial meetings with ministers who launch carnage for electoral considerations... Are we all deaf, blind and brain-dead? How can we keep bearing this outrageous double language, where the color of blood, the screams of pain and the meaning of “murder” and “terror” change entirely a few steps beyond a checkpoint? I am at a loss about what to do, but I heard about a total economic boycott of Israel on the part of people who do not recognize themselves in its way of “building stability and peace” in the region (and – incidentally – in the world). I will go for it, and I will write to newspapers about it. Silence in front of this is not an acceptable answer. For me, the credibility of the change brought about by Barack Obama will become apparent when he will stop Israel's lords of war and terror, and start supporting Israel's real voices of peace (example:

All our hard work and tears to arrive at a new approach to settling international conflicts and to raise the damaged image of our nation is in jeopardy because of the Israeli warlords and complaecent politicians in this country. All the international goodwill from the recent presidential elections could be squandered on the altar of war. What the warmongers and their puppet politicians forget is that we are watching their every move and we have the overwhelming majority of the people of the world on the side of peace and friendship for all nations. Warlords and puppet politicians on the take thrive on division and hate. Listen closely to how they talk. People of all nations let's unite for peace , friendship and prosperity. Together we can build a new world free of war and terrorism.
