Congrats on first CompassionteObama Supporter
Patriot2008 Thanks for remembering Debbies daily prayer for P.E. Obama on the previous thead.
"Isaiah 54:17
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
Daily Prayer For President Obama!
I pray that Jesus Lead and Guide President Obama in the right direction, I pray that he gives him wisdom, knowledge and understanding on the issues he will face. I ask that He help him make the right decisions during the most difficult times and crisis. All these things and more I ask in Jesus Name!
Love & Hugs!"

I can't go to DC (daughter has school and I have no child care) but just getting the invite and being able to be home to watch the whole event is unbelievealbe.

Anyone know if this is legit? I received an email today from "info@pic2009.org" offering tickets to one of the "seven official balls divided by national region." It's $500 a ticket, or $1000 if I want to lock in a particular region. The email is signed "The Presidential Inaugural Committee." Thanks in advance.

I would check that out too. From what I read tonight about inaugural balls, the ticket price is $150 with the exception of the young people's ball (19-35 yrs) priced at $75. It sounds like a ticket company gig. Be careful...

I got the same email asking exorbitant prices for the ten official balls. I'd also read previously that it was $150 for invited guests to the other balls, NOT the inaugural balls.
So, this may be legit but I'm not about to pay that kind of money for the possibility of getting a ticket! (It wasn't clear that you were guaranteed a ticket. I thought about the regional ball, Mid Atlantic, but...).
The number to call is (202) 651-2009 if anyone is interested. I may check it out just to see if it's legit.

I was just wondering why would Olmert brag about this...why now?...He didn't insult Condi Rice,he is humiliating USA("America could not vote in favor of such a resolution, Olmert told Bush.Soon afterwards, Rice abstained when votes were counted at the UN.")
This whole drama is a message to Obama and I hope he knows what he is dealing with....this statement is very telling:
"in a clear reference to Hizbullah, Olmert said, "We hope that nobody will test either our determination or our resiliency on any other front." "

CULVER RIDERS PREPARE FOR BIG DAY
Culver - A group of Indiana high school students is saddling-up for the ride of a lifetime.
Riders from Culver Academies were invited to march in the inaugural parade next week in Washington D.C. The beat of 400 hooves will help march the nation into a new era.
"It's honestly kind of giving me chills to think, 'Wow, I'm getting to ride for the first African-American president'," said Austin Chandler of the Black Horse Troop..
The procession to the president will wind them through the streets of the nation's capital.
"When you see a hundred horses heading down Pennsylvania Avenue and 72 horses have American flags. It is absolutely awesome for the spectators and the president," said Lynn Rasch, coach and choreographer of the Equestriennes.
"After four or five months of preparation, it's finally here," said Chandler.
But for those holding the reigns, the parade route begins in Culver.
"Making sure you can stay straight and in formation. The horses don't really like standing next to each other, so you have to work on that," said Equestriennes captain Ashley Eberhart.
"Don't get too close, so they don't kick or bite," Chandler said. "It has to be so very finely tuned."
"It's a bit chilly out there, the roads are slick and that's how it's possibly going to be on the day," said Mark Waller, director of horsemanship instruction.
The pressure is on to pull it off with grace and precision.
"Normally, there's about 250,000 for a presidential inaugural parade. They're expecting over two million spectators for the Barack Obama parade," Rasch said.
"So it'll be loud, it'll be obnoxious, there will be sounds that they've never heard before," Eberhart said.
"Blaring police siren, flashing lights, drums. We have a band in front of us and a band behind us," Rasch said.
That's why the Black Horse Troop and the Equestriennes invited a band to dress rehearsal. One spook could be disastrous.
"Like you just heard somebody yell, 'Loose horse!'," said Chandler. "That's a big possibility of what could happen."

it is indeed....for far too long. meanwhile, here is some more info on trolls....
Here are the five types identified loosely;
* Spamming troll: Posts to many newsgroups with the same verbatim post.
* Kooks: A regular member of a forum who habitually drops comments that have no basis on the topic or even in reality.
* Flamer: Does not contribute to the group except by making inflammatory comments.
* Hit-and-runner: Stops in, make one or two posts and move on.
* Psycho trolls: Has a psychological need to feel good by making others feel bad.
"A group is considered to be cohesively destroyed when two-thirds to three-quarters of the messages are a result of [trolls'] comments," Wood explains. They often target new users, who are more likely to take offense” or take their side.
Link
Disrupting a stable newsgroup gives the illusion of power, just as for a few, stalking a strong person allows them to think they are strong, too.
For trolls, any response is 'recognition'; they are unable to distinguish between irritation and admiration; their ego grows directly in proportion to the response, regardless of the form or content of that response.
Trolls, rather surprisingly, dispute this, claiming that it's a game or joke; this merely confirms the diagnosis; how sad do you have to be to find such mind-numbingly trivial timewasting to be funny?
Remember that trolls are cowards; they'll usually post just enough to get an argument going, then sit back and count the responses (Yes, that's what they do!).”

The sad part about all this is I have worked since I was 14
I am now 59. There were times I worked 2 & 3 jobs. There are job listings but when I go they say they're not hiring.
I detest even receiving the unemployment but right now it was our lifeline. I worry about my husband because he's not all that well but even he is looking for some sort of work. If anything were to happen to him I would die.
I have this feeling of desperation that I have never felt before.
Anyway, I'm trying to see the bright side, I know on January 20, 2009 it will be a very bright day not only for me but for all of us.

I think everyone was pissed off about Bush's comments today. I just have to say, if he truly cared about the American people, he should just keep his mouth shut and move on. Watching him today, is like adding salt to a womb.
In my lifetime, I have never seen a President behave that way. I am sure George Sr., is truly disappointed in his son. Even though, I don't care for the Republican party and their policies and views, at least George Sr. and Ronald Regan had some dignity (from what I can remember). Bush Jr. on the other hand is truly a vile man. He made no apologies for his mistakes regarding Katrina, the Iraq war or the economy. Blame it on everyone else, a true republican motto. Seven days to go, can't wait!!

It's incredible to me that so many of you are tired of hearing about the "gay issue." That you see it as some kind of distraction from Obama or your own efforts to talk about a community that is suffering.
I'm proud every single day that I get up on behalf of the gay community. I'm actually not gay. I've been in a straight relationship for over ten years now. I'm single and straight. But my best friend was gay in college. And committed suicide.
I really don't care what anybody here thinks of me. I see so many of you as very shallow people. I seriously doubt many of you have lost anyone in war, I seriously doubt any of you have lost anyone as a victim of homophobia. I seriously doubt many of you had their mother cry on their shoulder because she doesn't think she'll ever see a woman as president in her life time. I seriously doubt any of you have really experienced much of anything you spout off about here every day.
I will also say this. You are all basically good people. Just don't have a clue. Don't have a clue what it is to know someone's heart, a regular person's heart, and stand up for them. To see them struggle every day being differing, watch them suffer, be rejected by their family, be rejected on their job, be rejected by the society and country they live in.
I do it for Chris. And I'll tell you this. If you think I get "beat up" every day, I don't see it that way. I see it as righteous action on my part and my honor and my great priviledge.
So many of you here are in love with Barack Obama. He's just a man who puts his pants on one leg at a time and has big ears. I voted for the man but I expect better from him that consorting with the likes of Rick Warren.
Take care all.

As a non-gay person, I remember the movie 'Philadelphia' with Tom Hanks. I must admit that the first time that I received a shock to the system was the Matthew Shepherd case. Since then, there was another case(forgot his name). It was a young man(transgender) who was beaten/murdered by some supposed associates who felt that (s)he 'came on to them'.
I have since read articles about Ssempa and Akinola(two religious leaders in Africa) and their associations with Rick Warren (and in one case, Bush) that I find disturbing.

He realizes that despite their sharing his view there are many other subjects that we are all in agreence in and we shouldn't forget where we have common ground.

I find it fascinating that Victoria is exactly what he/she accuses many of us as being.
Victoria where is your concern for other issues other than the gay issue? What about the hundreds of Palestinians that are losing their lives indiscriminately every day right now? What about women and girls who are trafficked into prostitution, a modern form of slavery, what about babies and mothers who die in childbirth every day? I find your one-track focus very shallow myself.

People who feel strongly about the Warren thing don't like being told to shut up by people who don't feel strongly about the Warren thing, just as you probably wouldn't like to be told to shut up about topics that you feel strongly about.

This is a great post.
I wish everyone on the blog can just wait until after the inauguration to post your thoughts, issues etc.. with who he has speaking...I doubt Reverend Warren will spend his time trashing gays.
Obama's takes Lincoln's philosophy that to create great change you need to do things incrementally or else you do too much change at once, opposition makes it not pass and you are nowhere.
Obama's LGBT agenda, if you take everything the gay community wants now and doesn't have, everything that is needed for full equality, Obama is committing to 99% of it...commiting to the hate crime and discrimination legislation, civil unions with the same rights as marriage etc...
This is a strong first step to gay marriage, and will in doing these steps make people comfortable with gays and gay marriage and normalize/mainstream the gay community... Instead of pushing it on America, having backlash, allowing gays the right to be married while also projecting huge hate against them, these increments are much much better..
Take for example letting gays serve openly in the military... Most gays (and straights) aren't in the military, have never served and never will.. However if the gays can serve openly we will see openly gay soldiers fighting and dying for our country just like the straight ones.. we will have gay military heros, gays in leadership posiitons in the military..gay and straight men in the military able to shower beside each other (as those in the military do), fight alongside each other, protect each other, sleep in the same area...
This alone is going to create the acceptance to gays so that when the supreme court (which it will do after Obama appoints his rpelacement judges) legalizes it people will accept gays as equals...Also it will speed up the process for states to legalize it on their own... I think by the end of his first term it will be legal in CA, NY, MA, VT and a few smaller east coast states. Once it is legal there those nationally will be open to it...
Obama is taking it in steps... One step is not at the inaguration alienating and demonizing the 2/3rds of American's that share Warren's view and lose them as part of the coalition not just for this issue but for other issues we need to come together for.

Gupta is right when discussing Marijuana from a medical perspective, and as an M.D. has to discuss his thoughts on the safety for those who use and society. He is not making a political statement.
The proposition he is discussing is not something that would legalize all drugs which is a political and ideological measure..
He is just responding to those supporting the proposition saying that marijuana is 100% safe when it really isn't...
As surgeon general he would not develop Obama's health policy...
Another thing in Nevada it wouldn't be groundbreaking...Prostitution is legal in parts of Nevada, gambling is legal, they are sin city...it isn't that big of an issue...
Strangely Nevada has the toughest laws on the books for possession of cocaine and other drugs....

as a recovering addict and chemical dependency treatment professional, i fully support the legalization of marijuana. that way we could openly address it, regulate it so that there wouldn't be 'laced' stuff out there, etc.
our economy could use the revenues, and the dangers of marijuana are nothing compared to the dangers of alcohol and tobacco.
but i dind't get elected...and we aren't apt to sway his mind.

Taxing? The whole push to legalize drugs is to make it legal not just so we don't have to fill jail with users, but we don't have to fill jails, and make neighborhoods unsafe as drug addicts have to commit crimes to support their habit.
If drugs are legal, it goes against the reasons for the movement to find ways to drive up the cost.
If it costs the same amount you will have the same amount of other crimes.. The WAR ON DRUGS you reference will continue as long as people need to commit crimes to meet their addiction regardless of where they buy it..
Obama has made open he is not going to put a huge amount of political capital behind this with Healthcare and everything else...
This is a tough issue...

We asked some of the leading members of the Transition’s policy teams to sit down and talk a bit about it—why it’s necessary, how it will work, and how we’ll make sure it’s as efficient and effective as it is bold.
We compiled their responses into a short video, touching on each of the major elements of the plan.

Rebooting tha american economy will cost trillions of $. While everybody is looking in all directions for solutions that would cost taxpayers trillions of $, one very simple solution exist which would solve the current gluts of houses foreclosures/for sales, ,get the construction going, get the credit valve open, get the spending rushing and the economy rebooted--while solving the Middle-East crisis that has perdured for 60 years and that will no doubt perdure for ever.
Proposed solution--open the gates for all Israeli citizens to immigrate to America.
Within 2 years--there would be 7 millions new american citizens with money--who would buy houses, construct new houses for their family, furnish these houses.
An incentive could be worked out to bring all Jews in USA, to abandon their land and country and return it to Palestinians resulting in real permanent peace in Middle-East. If need be, build a replica of Jeruslem in America- or let them govern one specifi state of the Union.
I am sure the cost to USA would be far less than what is currently envisaged to do for getting the economy going without any garantees of success. The added bonus is that USA would benefit from the huge power brain that would come with this unprecedent immigration, to further empower the USA and reaffirm its power in the world.
In any case, USA accept years after years, over 3 million immigrants. Why not focus on quality Israeli population as immigrants over the next few years.
THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX!

We'll Miss The Vermont Rebel Yell
...
Remember when we all complained that Democrats had no spine? When he ran for president in 2004, Howard Dean had spine to spare. The man denounced the war in Iraq, kind of like that Obama fellow, made health care a real issue again, and he campaigned with a fire and passion that we hadn't seen in a politician in years. Up to then, candidates just played it safe and kept their passions beneath the belt, but not Dean. His famous scream after losing the Iowa Caucus probably buried him, yes, but at least this Vermont physician's rebel yell was heard far and wide. Democrats would matter again soon, if they actually cared.
Kerry never had a chance to beat Bush, partly because he played it safe.
...
Dean also has to be given credit for kick-starting the Democratic Online Machine, for what it is. Online fundraising, blogs, social networks -- these were all part of Dean's big new way of campaigning, and soon everybody else was following suit. Dean was the first online candidate, who grew his support on an online grassroot network.
...
Finally, we've got the 50 State Strategy. Another Kerry gaffe was simply going for the Blue States and crossing his fingers. Not a chance there.
...
Now, nobody deserves a cabinet position; no, these jobs should go to the best possible candidate. But Obama shouldn't dismiss Dean's contributions. The Politico story quotes a friend of Emanuel on the new Chief of Staff's thought process, saying:
"I talk to Rahm every day," said the friend. "Neither he nor I have mentioned the name of Howard Dean. It's just not on his radar screen."
That's precisely the problem. Forget what got you there, and you might just be

I have decided to write to the Transition Team on change.gov under the general area/subject of Transition Process, and recommend his appointment as Secretary of Commerce. A person with his mind should not be allowed to ride off into the sunset, but should be brought into the group. I think he may be the one person to jump start that Dept. and US industry/trade. Will you support me in recommending his appointment? Respectfully, Patriot2008

Thanks for the shared concern about Howard Dean.
However, I know you're meaning well for Howard, but IMO Howard deserves better than leftovers -- ie. Secretary of Commerce selection, now that Richardson has bowed out.
I just assumed (maybe naively) that Obama would have thanked more Howard for all the work that the latter has done.

Hey rich, I get the impression that Rahm had problems with Howard Dean. However, these problems should have never entered the picture in making cabinet selections. Dean would have been ideal for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Yet, there is no way that will occur now. I understand your feelings about a leftover position for Dean, but I am looking also at America in the long run. Ron Brown held the Secretary of Commerce position after he was the DNC Chair. He was good in the position. Actually, the position needs someone who is charismatic, and will get the job done. I have composed the letter to the Transition Team. If you feel that there is a better position that is available for Howard Dean, I will gladly replace it for the Secretary of Commerce position. Just let me know.

I thought for a person who did not know how to blog, did not know how to comment in a way that would engage people and who still does not like to engage with the negative attacks (I couldn't even read the negative back and forths when I first started this journey -- they made me cringe (I'd literally back up from the computer) -- I could'nt believe people could be so mean)
I've come a long way.

GOOD MORNING CYNTHIA......Last night I taught my hubby how to navigate the change.gov site. He loved it. He's still working very hard on his 2 ideas (1) alternate fuel & (2) conversion of gas guzzling cars sitting in dealer lots all over the country.
I showed him about 5 different places he was able to submit his entry. My hubby is a (very young) retired engineer who worked for 45 years on planes, boats and cars and also worked at NASA at one point. He has a lot to offer. We are hoping his plans get picked. As our community service we want to go to high schools and vocational schools and teach the students his designs.
At 69 my husband hates being retired and wants to work in the worst way. It keeps him young and as the selfish wife, it keeps him around. I will never be ready to let him go so anything he does to stay young, I support him.

He did get a set of papers from our Senator that give permission to do a background check. I took that as a good sign.
I will keep everyone posted. Votes will be great. The firsts submissions were about 11 PM last night if that helps in the search. Change.gov is a challenge to me at times as to how difficult it is to find stuff a person has submitted.

This makes me so angry. Our children and grandchildren's education is a major issue with me. There are so many other areas to cut back on, like a freeze on all Govonor, Senate & Representative raises for the next 4 years. Even I would go back to school if community colleges were free as they were in the 70's. That how I was able to get my 2 semesters in accounting.
Looks like I'll be e mailing Senators & Reps again today. We can't allow major cuts in education. If PE Obama's plan for the future is to succeed education has to get money not give up any of it's programs.

Education has always been a challenge in Florida because of the initial number of retirees down there.
No income tax means you don't have a foundation for the educational system -
Another blogger yesterday had a GREAT idea:
if they're taxing liquor and cigarettes
and New York will be taxing soft drinks shortly -
Why not tax the snack foods like chips and cookies? They're luxury items -
This money would go, specifically, toward the education coffers.
As your state has increased the number of young families - and young families work - and therefore should be taxed with income tax - they are looking for good schools.
A friend of mine moved to Florida several years ago with her highly gifted child - the only "opportunity" for the child in the school system was an agricultural school (!!!!!) - what???
Louisiana suffers the same demise - unfortunately the money for education has to come from somewhere -
but I did like the taxing of luxury food items -
I'm wondering - would I eat less chocolate if it was $5.00 a bar? (smile)

Also - the price of homes in areas where education is a priority is holding far more steady
than in areas with poor educational offerings -
while the rust belt, Florida, Nevada and California have been gravely hit by foreclosures -
out here in the highest taxes (like I pay over $17,000 a year just in taxes alone) - our prices have not dropped so dramatically - and we've experienced far less foreclosures.
Good schools attract young working families - and good people interested in keeping up the neighborhood.
While my children are both away - both went to state schools - which are far more affordable and therefore hard to get into - and therefore reputable schools - I'm willing to pay high taxes to pay for education, neighborhoods, beach parks and the like.
It's certainly not perfect - we're always fighting corruption - and our police officers out here are paid twice as much as NYC cops who are in a far more dangerous position.
There's an insane work and education ethic here - a two edged sword. Being laid back is not an option (smile)

From what you are saying, it seems like Crist is reducing funding in education at the state level, from state funding, not a reduction of federal funds.
If that is the case, that is a state issue that you should probably just take up with the governor or your representatives in the state legislature.
Obama can't just tell the Governors they can pull whatever funds they want out of the state funding for education and he will replace it.
Another thing, reducing funding doesn't necessarily mean reduced end product. The cost of living is significantly cheaper then it was just a year from now, costs of products and services have gone down, gasoline cost has gone down 60%, housing costs have gone down....so the Governor might just be not giving the teachers there standard 3-4% raise this year and next to cut funds with the teachers still affording the same lifestyle and kids getting the same education.
State workers are in a better situation then the rest of us who can get laid off or have our hours reduced.
Every government agency always says they are the one agency that absolutely can't have funding reduced...it causes problems for all agencies when funding is lowered, sometimes lowering funding by 10%, makes them operate at 50% because they can't handle the job at that lower budget..nonetheless they have to.
If he doesn't cut education 10%, he has to cut another agency then at 20%... You mention educatio, higher education.. a lot of the grants are federalized.. Don't relate to decisions at the state level..
Crist has to make a decision, does he want to cut government spending or does he want to raise taxes...It is not popular to raise taxes especially in a Republican state. He is certainly not just picking education.
As far as the items he is requesting money from, Obama is giving state a certain amount of funds they can request based on state size, specifically for certain types of project. He can't switch it to something else.
State employees are the only ones not being hit by the economy, they get paid same while products/services are cheaper and others are laid off or forced to work less hours. The best solution to Governors is to just lower state salaries 10%, and give these workers perhaps more vacation days, less hours, fine.

Can you believe it, just one week to go! Even though I haven't been posting much lately I still try to get over here and at least lurk a little bit. I see our friend Victoria was her usual pleasant self last night on that previous thread. Oh well.
Anyway, I've just been really busy with a pretty massive accounting project, trying to get ready to fly up to Seattle next week to see my granddaughter for the first time, hiking the Phoenix Mountain Preserve every weekend and getting some great video footage. I'm having problems though getting my videos transcoded properly so they can be viewed in High-Def. It may be that I have to upgrade my hardware to be able to fully utilize the power of today's High-Def video cameras. Oh the wonders of technology.
It is new software I'm using so once I really figure it all out I plan on staying pretty busy with making videos too. Right now mainly relaxation videos with nice scenery and soothing music but hopefully in the future some "on the street" interview type presentations.
Anyway, can't wait for next Tuesday. I will be with you all in spirit that day as I watch the proceedings on TV with my daughter and new granddaughter and probably singing this song to her.

Always enjoy your posts Desert Dove -
as for the software, etc. - at Thanksgiving time we were struggling using the free Microsoft software to view -
some old files that had been transferred from Video Tape and then on to Mpeg's - and then we were trying to view them on an HD TV -
we DID eventually make it work - it took the entire family young and old to figure it out -
so DON'T go out and buy a thing until you read up online how to do this - it's possible without spending gobs of money -
as for hiking up in the mountains - hope you're working with your local, state and fed to keep the green movement going forward - I'm sure your are -
take care

Good morning. Yes the coding with videos is different for every camera, computer, DVD or other player, etc. I have 3 different video editing software programs on my system so that's also probably confusing things a bit too. My system is going on about 4 years old now and was mainly built for data and accounting applications. that's why I was thinking that I may be "taxing" it (pun intended) beyond its capabilities.
As far as hiking, yes we sure are. In fact there are some people who are not cleaning up after their dogs on the trails, which is a big no-no. They provide bags at the visitor centers and the trail heads, so there really is no excuse. At least the areas we've been in so far have been free of all other litter. Nothing spoils the beauty of nature more than man made trash. And as far as the dogs, we have two ourselves which we haven't taken out hiking, but if we do we would certainly clean up after them.

I am just bursting with joy (although I think I have the flu or a virus or something). Anyway yeah I went back and read yesterday's blog and she baited the O-Family and got the attention she seeks. Originally my wife and I planned on going to DC for the inauguration and I was going to beg you for even a spot on the floor for a sleeping bag, but then plans changed once the granddaughter was born. I did make you a promise that I would bring some prickly pear cactus jelly so if you want to O-mail me with your address I'll send you a jar.
Sounds like you're going to have a house full so take care of yourself and make sure to really soak all of this in. This is probably the defining period of OUR lifetimes and is something to truly appreciate. I can't wait until little Sophia is old enough for her to understand her grandpa's stories about this gentleman named Barack Obama who is our 44th President, or who will be as of January 20th of course.

An Obama supporter had told me about this song written back in 1976 by Wilson Turbinton, who performed under the name of "Willie Tee." When I listened to the lyrics I couldn't help myself thinking that they were describing Senator Barack Obama and this movement for Change. Unfortunately, Wilson died last year but I think we can all agree that his music is living on!
Anticipation in this nation
has finally come to a head
The situation needs evaluation
Too much corruption in this land
The situation of every man
is coming together again
We need a strong, independent leader
that'll bring a little love back
into this land
People have finally come to realize
We need more love in this land
We need a little love for our brothers
We need a little love for our sisters, too
Spread a little love for us Fat
Anticipation
Anticipation, anticipation
What do we need
to change our present state
Anticipation, anticipation
Tell me who can we get
to change our present state
The world is ready for a change right now
It's time to spread a little love
Anticipation of needed change
It's going through our land

I hope I did the song and the artist proud with my video.

Barack Obama is to issue an executive order declaring the closure of the Guantánamo Bay prison camp on his first day in office next week, aides to the President-elect said today.
The directive will be an immediate and high-profile declaration by Mr Obama that he intends to make a clean break from President Bush on the most controversial aspects of the way his predecessor has prosecuted the War on Terror.
Mr Obama is also expected to issue another order explicitly banning the use of torture on terror suspects and other controversial security policies, as he seeks to persuade the rest of the world that, under him, America is entering a new era where the Geneva Conventions are respected.

To be finally rid of this 'scar' will do wonders for the World.
The "scam" in the name of "Enemy Combatants" has truly diminished America's reputation.
There is a young Canadian, who is now a man but at the time of his capture was a "child soldier". His crime was killing an American soldier on the battle field. He is the only Western captive still held at Guantanamo Bay. His trial is scheduled for January 26th, 2009. It's time for Canada to step up to the mark and repatriate this young man. In fact, it would be timely to have him repatriated to Canada as the first prisoner out of Guantanamo Bay under President Barack Obama's Executive Order.
Read the link from CTV regarding this isssue and what his military lawyer, Lt. Cmdr. William Kuebler has to say about his client Omar Kadhr's situation. This young man has already spent a third of his life in prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba under US Military detention as an "enemy combatant".

President-Elect Barack Obama has stated that 90% of the jobs will be PRIVATE SECTOR jobs.
I strongly suggest you watch the documentary I.O.U.S.A. to see exactly how much the deficit increased under your "name sake" Ronald Reagan.
Also, check out how much the deficit increased under George Bush, it more than doubled under his tenure of 8 years.
So, your taxes, your childrens & grandchildrens taxes have increased substantially under Republican governments.
So, it's time to sit back & have respect for President-Elect Barack Obama's ideas for the future. The only President to reduce the deficit in the last 3 decades has been President Clinton, a Democrat. President Clinton left President Bush a surplus budget and look where the U.S. debt is now.

I will say, however, that she doesn't appear well this morning. Deep circles under her eyes, looks nervous as heck or like she just got bad news before entering the chamber.
I think John Kerry epitomized the word "class" during his remarks. Was troubled Hillary did not smile during most of his gracious comments - again, to me it's not because she's not gracious but perhaps something's troubling her (?).
Hope she puts much more of a new face on, when she reads her 16-page statement! I'm giving her a chance to blow their minds - just wish she looked a little more into it all.

Michelle was born on January 17, 1964 that makes her a Water Rabbit.
Here are the characteristics per Chinese Astrology:
Those following traditional Chinese astrology consider people born in the Year of the Rabbit to make ideal diplomats or politicians. In Chinese astrological thought, a "rabbit person" is graceful, cultured and well-mannered. Although Rabbit people get along well with many people, at heart they are considered to be basically reserved creatures, and are only truly happy when engrossed in some sort of scholarly or intellectual activity. Rabbit people are considered too sensitive for the world around them; they are not able to thrive in competitive or aggressive environments, and are anxious when others force them to take risks. Their inner world is considered too delicate for unsettled or unpredictable situations, and they tend to create peaceful and comfortable atmospheres--like rabbit dens--instinctively. According to traditional Chinese astrology, this characteristic makes them very hospitable and attentive people, who take care of those around them.
The average Rabbit person emphasizes the importance of small details. They pay attention to everything from color, design and furniture to food and conversation. And only when they are sure that everything has been arranged as they wish can these people relax and have fun.
People born in the year of the Rabbit often lead a conservative lifestyle where one of the most important things is their security. This quality has a negative side also: opting for safety over risk, they may miss good opportunities. These people are not frivolous or irresponsible, for when they truly believe in something, they are serious, persevering and capable.
Calm as they are, it is not easy to provoke Rabbit people. They are sentimental and compassionate. They can be moved by the personal problems you share with them.

Bush - NOT a champion of Americans with HIV |

Few persons not directly impacted by HIV/AIDS realize just how horrible George W. Bush has been to Americans suffering from HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately, I was one of the first of the current generation of Bush victims.
I first learned I was HIV+ several months after George Bush assumed the presidency. I quickly learned that one of Bush's first acts as president was to attack persons living with HIV. Under the Clinton administration HIV was determined to be a automatic qualification for social security disability benefits. Bush in his first months moved to end that qualification.
Like many the disease hit me hard early and I suffered extreme medication side effects that prevented me from continuing my job at the time. Although unable to work and completely incapacitated (I spent almost 16 hours everyday in bed) I had to fight for 7 months to receive any disability income. In the end I was approved not because of my HIV status; but because of my Epilepsy and mental distress. Because not automatically qualified I was subjected to annual reviews lasting many months at a time which contributed to stress and aggravation of my seizure disorder and mental health. Eventually, the side effects of my meds were added as a cause for my disability. To this day, HIV is not the source of my disability benefits. It is the lingering legacy of a president who assumed office with a pledge to the radical religious right to put "gays" in their place.
In recent years Bush has attempted to repair his tarnished reputation by giving billions to African nations, however, during the Bush administration financial support to Americans suffering with HIV has remained stagnant. During the Bush administration we watched as funds for living saving medications dried up in the later months of every fiscal year and Americans were deprived the drugs that would save their lives in many states. In some parts of the country people died while their names languished on underfunded medication program lists. Unfortunately few people paid attention.
While I watched Bush on television yesterday arrogantly defend his presidency and claim its success because we did not suffer another terrorist attack to the homeland....I can't help but think of his attack on the homeland that has destroyed and taken lives of Americans suffering from HIV/AIDS.

I doubt you have time to read these comments. But I'll post anyway. I am in no way a fan of using taxpayer dollars ( my dollars) to "save" homeowners from foreclosure. This is wrong from both a financial and moral level. My Wife and I are perfect examples of the negative effects of the last housing bubble. We live in San Francisco, which is perhaps the most expensive metro in the US. We make better than average income. We carpool, drive old cars, have no debt, buy cheaper groceries, and save our money. We were effectively priced out of the housing market. We could have taken out one of those ARM or IO loans. But we resisted because it was so obvious that the bubble would eventually pop, which it did and is still doing.
For almost a year now, the government has been trying to in some way re-inflate that bubble. More troubling, to help homeowners who in many cases made the wrong decision and took risks they were well aware of. That they should be viewed as "victims" is not necessarily the correct direction since as such, My Wife and I were victims for years as we got priced out, yet since we used financial prudence we don't get a free handout? How screwed up is that?
The bottom line is that in order to have the economy recover, those prices MUST come down to levels that real wages can afford. As such, the prices are still in my opinion too high even now. Let this run its course. Once people can actually afford homes with real wages and no phony loans, we will be in much better and stable condition. PLEASE stop giving handouts to the irresponsible and give we who use our brains a chance. Thanks.

Yes, the market was artificially inflated but if we allow a huge number of foreclosures won't that artificially deflate the market? Won't that unfairly punish people who bought and are paying for their homes?

PE Obama requested release of rest of TARP funds, by asking Pres.Bush to make the request to Congress.
What WE can do it make SURE that our reps in Congress don't give any more funds to the BANKING industry.
PE Obama has said he wants the rest of the funds to be spent helping homeowners.
Congress can do this by using programs through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, (which institutions we taxpayers have already purchased!).
Hopefully, thereby we'll keep creepy commercial ghouls out of public tax-payer's funding !
But we need to notify Congress we won't stand for any of the rest of the TARP funds going into commercial banking!

Bob/Seth, clearly you and your wife are very financially savvy, and intelligent. those who are intelligent and savvy knew what they were doing. it's difficult, when you are bright, to realize that NOT EVERYONE IS!!! seriously. many many people just BAFFLE me @ how much they trust what their doctor says, even when their doctor is just plain wrong. i'm sure mechanics have the same reaction when they hear what a mechanic got someone for.
bankers do the same thing, realtors participated as well by making the referrals. i am not a financial genius, and i trusted my realtor (with good reason, he's my best friend's husband and i know him to be extremely honest...but i am bright enough to evaluate that myself). he guided me away from an ARM, and the discussion was over.
had i not been bright, and had i not been fortunate enough to have my best friend's husband as my realtor, i could easily have been led to believe that this ARM loan was a good deal for me.
so what you are saying is that because people don't have education about banking issues or someone to stand up for them against those who do, they should be punished.
i'm not saying that there isn't a lot to be said for being responsible, there surely is! i have driven far more than my share of beater cars, i scrimp and save and finally bought my home in my mid thirties. i'm saying that it's because we are bright that we have the privilege of knowing whom to trust, how to gather our own information, etc.
and as an aside, we've been using taxpayer dollars for FAR stupider reasons, and with MUCH BIGGER price tags, than helping our fellow americans to get out of a hole they've participated in digging. and you are clearly bright enough to know what these things are.

CBS News: Were Bank Bailout Winners And Losers Cherry-Picked?
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2009 | by Sharyl Attkisson
(CBS) When Congress passed the $700 billion dollar bailout, the whole idea was to buy failed mortgage assets.
But once the bill became law on October 3, HENRY PAULSON'S (George Bush's Republican Administration)TREASURY DEPARTMENT moved quickly on an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT FRONT:
Give bailout money to select banks to help them buy competitors.
It was largely under the public radar, with only anonymous government officials acknowledging the strategy.....
... CBS News has learned the banking industry was clued-in from the start.
.... BB&T Bank's chief executive told analysts in a conference call shortly after the bailout passed... he's not talking about using bailout funds to help with mortgages or consumer credit -
BUT TO BUY OTHER BANKS. !!!
"This is a relatively inexpensive way to raise capital for acquisition opportunities," said John Allison, CEO of BB&T.
A month later, they got $3 billion in bailout money.

P.S.S. If the above didn't make you angry, try reading this link:
Follow The Money: Was Part Of Bailout A "Bait And Switch?"
It took a full month for many in Congress and the American public to realize that billions in bailout funds were not going to be used the way they thought.
Instead of purchasing failed mortgage assets, the Treasury Department used the taxpayer money to buy preferred shares of stock in select banks.
It was not only weak banks in need of assistance, but also banks supposedly deemed to be "strong" by federal regulators;
... idea apparently to help shore up the economy by ensuring strong banks take over weaker ones...
Sources tell CBS News the bank strategy WAS NOT DISCUSSED IN ADVANCE WITH IMPORTANT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS WHO WERE "SOLD" ON THE BAILOUT.
Sources also say the strategy was not mentioned to top members who spoke directly with Treasury Secretary Paulson.

Hello Friends,
President elect Obama has asked us to work together to help our communities on January 19th.
As we all know, the Bush Administration completely ignored the people who suffered from Hurricane Katrina.
I am helping to raise money for Katrina Corps, a non profit that assists the rebuilding effort in New Orleans. Non profits are suffering now in a big way due to the economy. Could you help out in a small way to keep the rebuilding effort alive?
I have made a short video about the work we have done and am hoping that you will donate a small amount to the effort.
Remember how much we raised for Obama in small amounts? We can help New Orleans rebuild $5.00 or $10.00 or $20.00 dollars at a time.
Please forward this email and help New Orleans rebuild.

I hope you will read this message and think about it. I read yesterday on CNN that you will have an Openly gay bishop to deliver first inauguration event invocation. I felt so disappointed, because i can see that as a so called Christian, you are compromising and start pleasing people other than GOD. If you start your presidency this way, God will turn his back from you just like he turned his back on Saul. America will continue to go down and there will be nothing you will be able to do about it.
I know you, who are going to read this will say that i am a fanatic and hater, but there is one thing you need to know Gay are an abomination in the sight of God. Period i don't care what you tell me. read Romans chapter 1.

I think Ramses paints a pretty accurate picture of christianity. I personally consider the christian community the enemy of my community and my family. You can make all the excuses for it you like but the christian cult spews hate and intolerance in disproportionately high amounts.
Obama has made a serious mistake by including so much religion in his inauguration. One of the founding principles of this country is freedom of religion and that includes freedom from it too. Personally I feel at this point that he is moving us towards theocracy.
The inclusion of Gene Robinson was nothing but an afterthought meant to appease those of us in the Gay community who are very rightfully hurt and upset about the inclusion of a bigot like Rick Warren. Too late, damage done. Don't ask for my money or vote again, and MANY in the Gay community feel this way.
Barack Obama promised the Chicago Gay community the moon and the stars in 2004 and then delivered nothing...zilch. Same thing will happen again this time, after all, he is just another politician.
If Barack Obama was truly serious about unity he would have never included someone as hateful and divisive as Rick Warren. The President-elect now has a severe credibility issue within the Gay community and I doubt it is one he will be able to overcome.

Not all of us in the gay community are quite so "anti-christian". I would suggest using the terminology "radical religious right" rather then Christian to define that societal religious segment that so affronts the gay community. Thus including the non-christian religious views who are equally intolerant and not encompassing Christians who are supportive.
Their are many christian religions who fully embrace and lovingly support the gay community.

The Unitarians are not a Christian organization nor do they promote the principles of christianity. They promote love for all and embrace people of all faiths or no faith at all.
The MCC is the Gay Version of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Many of us consider them traitors to our community.
I live in a city of 6.2 million with a huge Gay population, the fourth largest in the nation, and the Gay community here is vastly non-religious. While you may embrace christianity....it does not embrace you. The sooner you wake up and realize christianity is not the friend of the Gay community then the better off you and our community will be.

Sarah Obama, Barack Obama's Kenyan, paternal grandmother, will soon arrive in Washington DC for her grandson's inauguration on January 20.
The AFP reports that Sarah will bring some unusual gifts for the new president:
NAIROBI (AFP) -- A three-legged stool and a traditional Luo oxtail fly whisk are some of the household items that could bring a new feel to the Oval Office, courtesy of Barack Obama's Kenyan grandmother.
Quoted in the Standard newspaper Monday, she said she had hoped to bring him a traditional spear and shield from her Luo tribe when she flies to Washington on Friday with some other family members.

**I'd bet all these gifts will have all the magic on them possible from Kenya to bring good luck to Barack Obama.I really hope the airline allows her to bring the spear and shield.

Hi Dinora, might I suggest fur, fur, faux fur. It's cold. A coat with a fur lining would be helpful and of course dress in layers. Sweaters and ladies longjohns would be helpful too. Boots with fur lining that come up your legs somewhat. Good warm gloves, not leather. Leather is not good, lol. A snooby hat would be good too. Hope this helps. I am sure Donna will have other suggestions. The wind in D.C. is fierce.

Dinora,
Just a suggestion & pardon the intrusion, I know you asked Donna. But, why don't you wait & get the boots in DC, they'll have warmer styles there. Checked your profile & you live in California, so they won't have boots suitable for weather in the North West. I think the weather is forecast to be cold. Heard they're asking people to wear walking boots & pack your patience. So, maybe a pair of warm, and lined hiking boots are in order. I know they're not fashionable but they'd be comfortable.

Thought of a few other things. I've been watching coverage of the preparations for Inauguration Day and security is advising no back packs, no thermos, no baby strollers, no umbrellas.
So, in light of that, anyone going to stand and watch in the Mall or the Parade route should be prepared for cold & wet. Be prepared for rain, freezing rain or snow to be on the safe side. Something that is waterproof might be in order, especially a hat. You don't want to get your head cold or your feet. Doris is right about leather it's just not warm on the hands. Mitts are warmer than gloves, maybe take both. You can also get "Hot Shots" for the hands and feet, they're little packets that give warmth and you can tuck them in boots or mitts to warms toes & fingers. My daughter was in a marching band and she used them regularly in the Santa Claus parade every year and they worked great. As Doris mentioned layers are good, if you need the extra clothing you have it, and if you don't need it, you can always take a layer off.
Have fun!

Dinora it is really cold here. You need to dress in layers. Start with tights and warm boots. You can get some when you get here if you can't find any out there in CA. We have a store here Payless that sells warm boots at a reasonable price. Wear pants that are comfortable and a couple of shirts.I will have on my Obama T-Shirt and hooded fleece in case it rains. Bring a plastic poncho in your purse (just in case). Preferably wool pants or jeans. Have a scarf; good gloves and a hat that covers your ears. You will be out in the cold a long time. Now some can take the cold better than I but I hate the cold so I would rather overdress and peel if necessary but be prepared for the worst.

Hi Donna! No, I called Pelosi's office yesterday and declined the tickets. They assured me that they would get them to someone else. It really pained me to do it since it feels like such a privilege and I know it will be such a thrill to be there. But because I got such late notice, it would have cost quite a lot to fly there, I didn't have a place to stay and the prices now are exorbitant. So, very very sadly, I had to decide not to go. I can't tell you how much I'd love to be in DC, but will watch intently with my kleenex at hand and lots and lots of total joy.

People are mad that Ed Schultz used the term mutt, yesterday referring to a dog. People are mad because perhaps Obama's dog will need to come from a breeder as opposed to a shelter.
Turns out Obama is going to a shelter. I hope he gets a dog that makes HIM happy and HIS FAMILY happy. I hope it's a puppy and well-behaved and not sickly.
I'm so tired of people thinking they own PE Obama and that their input is necessary in every aspect of Obama's new life.

So, to me, that is the source of all of the Monday morning quarterbacking, and the arm-chair generals and presidents out in the blogoshpere and on tv and radio.
I'm hoping that at some point, people will get tired of complaining and offering their 2 cents on every little thing.

Yes, but the step-grandmother can really have the same role as the grand mother.
Look at Joe Biden's situation...Biden's wife dies when his kids are very young.....2 years later he marries Jill. Jill essentially raised those kids almost their whole childhood. Even though she was their step mother, she had the same role as if she was their mother and they saw her as their mom..their second mom.
Could be the same thing with Obama's step grand mother...she might have married Obama's grandfather and really raised Obama's father, served as grandmother to Obama's father's children...

I especially liked how she and Barbara Boxer addressed the plight of women around the world, and I'm glad Boxer showed the photos. There's nothing like a good visual to make a case for what suffering really means...they were gruesome, but very important.

Saw an interview with Rudy Gulianni on CNN this morning. He was very coy about a run as Governor for NY State.
I think that Patterson will have a real fight in 2010. So, his decision about who will replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate will be based on help to get him re-elected. I would think that Caroline Kennedy would be the best to help him in this regard. She is a powerful fundraiser.
Also, I believe the replacement for Hillary Clinton will be a woman. There will only be 16 female Senators in the Senate when Hillary leaves. It make sense to appoint someone outside of Congress. All of the replacements in the Senate thus far have been men.
I guess it could be two old white men for the Republicans Gulianni and King versus Patterson & the appointment in 2010.
I don't think the other female candidates have the fundraising power that Caroline Kennedy has.
Go Caroline!

Bush's Final Press Conference: White House Interns
1/13/09 The Huffington Post- Stuart Whatley
Bush's final press conference was, at best, a maladroit, awkward, and typically belated attempt at final fence-mending before the president leaves office for good. As Dana Milbank notes in Tuesday's Washington Post, Bush seemed well-rehearsed and ready to discuss the myriad issues upon which he often draws the most criticism -- the economy, Katrina, Abu Ghraib, the "Mission Accomplished" banner, and more. Milbank writes:
By the time he finished, it was hard to imagine why only 23 percent of Americans are able to see the Bush years for the unqualified success that they are. "I thank you for giving me a chance to defend a record that I am going to continue to defend, because I think it's a good, strong record," the president declared.
On a more amusing note (or maybe just sad), Milbank also references a bulletin to the White House press corps issued prior to the press conference. The memo set a tone importance and fanfare for the event. But, when the moment of the event rolled around, there was apparently such a dearth of reporters and spectators in the room that White House interns were conscripted to fill the empty chairs.
The White House had high expectations for yesterday's final, historic news conference. "ONE CORRESPONDENT PER ORGANIZATION," proclaimed the bulletin sent to reporters. "STANDING ROOM ONLY FOR NON-SEAT HOLDERS." But when the appointed hour of 9:15 a.m. arrived, the last two rows in the seven-row briefing room were empty, and a press aide told White House interns to fill those seats.
Needless to say, the final press conference seems to have fallen short of White House expectations (but presumably not the expectations of anyone else). Think Progress even highlights the final seconds of the event wherein the press members who actually did show up do not seem to know how to respond as Bush abruptly thanks them and exits the stage.
Bush often discusses the different roles "long-term" and "short-term" history will play in defining his legacy. And though the countless "Bushisms" of the past eight years are adequately immortalized in print, video, and audio form, there is a certain sadness to the fact that there will no longer be a constant barrage of new material.

Biden travels to Iraqi city of Kirkuk
1/13/09 by Marwan Ibrahim-AFP
KIRKUK (AFP) – US vice president-elect Joe Biden, on a trail-blazing visit to Iraq ahead of Barack Obama's inauguration, met on Tuesday with Iraq's prime minister before travelling to the troubled city of Kirkuk.
After talks with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Baghdad, the Delaware senator arrived in the oil-rich city where he met governor Abdul Rahman Mustafa and his deputy Rakan Saeed al-Juburi.
"Solving the main issues of Kirkuk is a major issue for the United States government in Iraq," Biden told a group of journalists at the airport.
"The new administration is very concerned about the conflict in Kirkuk and I call on all political parties in Iraq to find a consensus that will resolve this conflict."
The oil-rich Kirkuk province, with 900,000 inhabitants, is ethnically mixed region made up of Turkmen, Arabs, Christians and Kurds. But the Kurds have demanded it be added to their autonomous region in the country's north.
Although the number of violent attacks in Iraq as a whole has dropped sharply this year, attacks have continued regularly in the province, and last month a suicide bomber killed at least 55 people and wounded 95 at an eatery.
Earlier Biden met Maliki after arriving in Baghdad from Afghanistan via Kuwait on Monday, and first holding talks with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
Discussions with Maliki focused on the future of US forces in Iraq and improving economic relations with the administration of president-elect Obama, who will take over on January 20 from President George W. Bush.
"Talks during the meeting reviewed security and political progress... including establishment of the law and the building of Iraqi armed forces that will take over responsibility after the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq," said a statement from Maliki's office.
The United States, which invaded Iraq in 2003 and toppled president Saddam Hussein, currently has 146,000 soldiers in Iraq but is increasingly taking a back seat to a more assertive Iraqi police and army.
Under the terms of an agreement signed between Baghdad and Washington in November, US combat forces will remain in the country until the end of 2011, but operate under the authority of the Iraqi government.

This is a good read at how Congress is looking out for Congress. Last I checked, Obama wasn't asking anyone to "bow" to him. This is going to be problematic. They want deference and humility - not solutions...
Democratic Congress Shows Signs It Will Not Bow to Obama
"But the message sent by committee chairmen and Democratic leaders was clear: Although Obama takes office Jan. 20 with the high hopes of a troubled nation, it is Congress that will serve as the gateway to a successful presidency. Show a little deference, humility and flexibility, veteran members observed, and early stumbles may be forgotten."

Obama inauguration to air in theaters
MSNBC pact puts coverage in 27 U.S. locations
1/12/09 By Paul J. Gough
NEW YORK -- President-elect Barack Obama is on his way to the big screen, thanks to a deal between MSNBC and Screenvision that will put the news channel's inaugural coverage in 27 theaters around the country.
Free tickets are being handed out via MSNBC.com to see the inauguration and parade from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. ET at the 27 theaters run by 11 exhibitor partners in 21 markets. Midday Tuesday isn't necessarily a big movie time, so it helps to fill the theater -- and boost popcorn and soda sales -- at a time when it's not usually busy.
That means that Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews and other MSNBC and NBC personalities will play the big movie screen in addition to the usual MSNBC cable and satellite stream. MSNBC won't be in high-definition until the second quarter, but both the channel and Screenvision say the quality will still be high.
"It'll look great," MSNBC president Phil Griffin said. "We're thrilled about it."
Screenvision was approached by MSNBC last year about carrying the coverage in some of the same theaters that take Screenvision's preroll video, executive vp exhibitor relations Darryl Schaffer said. Since August 2007, Screenvision has had an alternative programming division that has exhibited New York Mets baseball games, operas and other events live via movie theaters. Schaffer said that Screenvision had the capability to do as many as 200 locations, though MSNBC was looking for a smaller event than that.
For MSNBC, it's a chance to continue the momentum that vaulted it into the fastest-growing channel in all of cable in 2008. That's the strategy, and Griffin said Monday afternoon to expect more in 2009 to build MSNBC's brand.
"We want to reach people we've never reached before," Griffin said. "We're going to do numerous things like that to get our name out there. Ubiquity is the name of the game in 2009."

I don't know if Obama or anyone on his team actually READ this blog, but I sure hope so.
The last spending incentive (stimulus check) didn't work. A lot of people saved that money instead of spending it. If Obama is going to do that again, I strongly suggest this for the money to actually be SPENT:
Issue Debit Cards! I don't think they can be cashed in (or that could be arranged not to happen), and since we "own" a lot of banks now due to the bailouts, the processing of the cards could be spread out amongst all of them instead of just one bank handling all the processing.
Just a thought... Hope it is considered.

The tax cuts that Obama is proposing are different than the stimulus checks we got with Buswh.
The tax cuts from Obama will translate into $20-50 more in your weekly paycheck. In theory, it's harder to save or pay off a bill with 20 or so extra dollars. You are more likely to spend it on that extra cup of coffee, or more groceries, or on dinner with your friends.
A lump sum check of a couple hundred dollars, however, is much easier to save or pay down a debt.
So, I don't think the Obama tax cut idea is equal to the Bush stimulus check at all since the way the tax cut is distributed is different, and will more than likely be spent differently as a result.
Speaking for myself, if I had an extra $20-50 in my check every 2 weeks, I'd probably end up spending it on random things, rather than saving it. Even if my intention was to save it, since it's such a small amount, it wouldn't make too much of a dent in my savings account, nor would it dent any of my debts significantly. People want some extra cash to buy things, and this would help.

Gee, sorry to disagree, but we absolutely NEED any further stimulus monies to fund Infrastructure Projects;
roads, bridges, light-rail...
To provide employment! Jobs!
Health care...
Using Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac to help homeowners to re-finance their home-loans...
Cities, counties, and States are going bankrupt.
Just passing out money helter-skelter isn't getting any jobs created.
Some folks don't NEED a handout;
They need a hand-up!

Thank you for raising General Honore up as Head of FEMA. I brought this up a couple of months ago and am glad someone else sees what tremendous person this man is. As a New Orleanian, I can tell you that nothing began to happen here until Gen. Honore put boots on the ground. It was like a third world country in the middle of the US. He came and started shouting orders and our National Guard got their rears in gear and started turning this city and state around. We still have a long, long way to go but I thank General Honore for his skills during the roughest times our city and state have seen.

To: rich and Lydia, I read your posts and link concerning Howard Dean. He has been a viable force in the Democratic Party. Respectfully,

Thanks for the shared concern about Howard Dean.
However, I know you're meaning well for Howard, but IMO Howard deserves better than leftovers -- ie. Secretary of Commerce selection, now that Richardson has bowed out.
I just assumed (maybe naively) that Obama would have thanked Howard for all the work that the latter has done. }}

[POSTED UPSTREAM, ALSO]
Hey rich, I get the impression that Rahm had problems with Howard Dean.

I respect Dean but feel he has very little political capital at this point as a result of doing what the Democratic Party needed of him...
He became a polarizing figure in the primary of both Obama and Hillary supporters as he was asked to play referee with FL/MI and other things...
Also, as Obama always wants a consistent tight focused message he didn't take the role a party chair often has of promoting and being the spokesman for the nominee, or criticizing the opponent. As a result people didn't see him a part of Obama's victory as he didn't have this visibility and Obama had to sidestep the DNC in the unique nature of his campaign...
I definately don't see him having a lot of GOP support as DNC head, and he has never had to pass anything that required a single vote of a GOP congressmen or senator (as he was just a Governor).
He understands healthcare as a doctor, but Dashle wrote a book on it and knows the key players in the Senate/House (from his days as Senate leader) to navigate the bills passage.....
He is also someone that I assume played a key role in Obama's vision of healthcare reform and his plan as they are good friends and embraces the plan Obama has now...
Really, Dean has stayed out of policy completely the last 4 years..He doesn't push or promote policy as DNC head just tries to get candidates elected and get funding and build state DNC organizations... He really hasn't tried to reshape the DNC policy wise, his own party...
What has he worked with Republicans on (aside from the Republican local officials in Vermont)?..
I think he would be a great secretary of commerce as it would require the same skills he is using now...Now he goes all over the country promoting the DNC working 16 hours a day 365 days a year, meeting with people, is very social, creating this network, representing the party. As commerce secretary we need someone really social that can go around the world meeting with these peopledoing similar negotations.. It doesn't matter where they see him on the DEM-REP spectrum, these countries don't have these parties, don't care, what they have in common is they like trade.
Obama has to see this guy can thrive in a NON EXEC position, working under Obama.

i can't help thinking that Dean has some other things in mind for his career, and that this is the reason he's not been tapped. after all, i've never known barack to allow politics to run him, and i'm not sure that dean hasn't sent out word that he's not interested in anything.
after all if they were going to get health care passed, howard dean would have been the primo choice for HHSA or SG, and neither happened, or were even speculated to include him on the list...
so i guess i am being naive also in thinking that the decisions included him.

I think Daschle is better at HHS than Dean. I don't think Dean would be able to work with the Republicans to get health care pasted. In fact, I don't think the republicans like him very much. Daschle on the other hand having been Majority Leader knows his way around the Senate. He will be a great asset as HHS Secretary.

vitter should have been expelled, and if they had actually instituted an external ethics board, as obama asked them to do, he would have been.
but his point, from what i'm seeing, appears to have not been the issue; he said quite pointedly and rudely what others have repeatedly said to her, that her answers are so long that their 10 minutes is eaten up in one or two questions, so they are having to not get all their questions asked that they want.

When I look back at the primary and how so many wanted Hillary Clinton to be POTUS, something stands out more now than ever:
Most of the woman who said they ONLY wanted HRC for POTUS really had no idea of what policy she would put forward. Her policy did NOT differ from Barack Obama.
Now you can actually hear her complete view when she is being questioned by her former colleagues. Did any of those die hard Clinton supporters who claimed Barack Obama DID NOT have "experience" really believe HRC was the ONLY one who could run this country,or were they just voting for a woman??? None of the HRC supporters I spoke to during the primary could state ANY of the issues Hillary Clinton is speaking about today....Did they really believe barack Obama was NOT ready? Funny how fate would beg to differ with those Hillary Supporters.

those who supported HDRC were, in my experience, doing so because of her gender. which for me is fine, as long as all things are equal. for me, it was ethics.
however, HDRC is a good bit more hawkish in terms of foreign policy than obama is, and i can't imagine that, truly, most women actually support a more hawkish foreign policy. HDRC is the one who announced she was going to be SOS, not the OTT. he accepted her only to keep her from opposing him, esp on such things are foreign policy, in the senate.

I got my inauguration announcement that invited me to the "Free" events. It is 8 1/2 by ll on cream card stock with a gold raised inauguration seal. The invitation came with a letter explaining that it is a "Commemorative Invitation".
This is a keepsake for those who will be attending and as well as something for those not attending.
But it is not a ticket to get into any particular event.
I loved getting mine. It will go into my scrap book. It would look good in a frame, so I might do that.
Oh well, I was just happy to get it.

Mortgage giants extend suspensions of foreclosures
January 08, 2009, 10:31 a.m.
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said Thursday they will extend the suspension of foreclosure sales and evictions from single-family homes through the end of January.
The government-controlled home loan giants said the extension will allow borrowers facing foreclosure to keep their homes as it works with mortgage servicers to find options for troubled mortgage holders under the Streamlined Modification Program.
Freddie and Fannie began the modification program in December, aiming to create more affordable mortgage payments for borrowers at risk of foreclosure.
The program applies to borrowers who have missed three payments or more, own and occupy their homes, and have not filed for bankruptcy.
Under the program, borrowers can reduce their interest rate, extend the life of the loan or defer payments on part of the principal.
Fannie Mae personnel have been reviewing seriously delinquent loans to see if borrowers have been contacted and all options to work out their situations have been exhausted, the company said.
Freddie Mac Chief Executive David Moffett said in a statement the mortgage giant is "committed to pursuing every responsible opportunity to reduce foreclosures and accelerate the return of stability to the U.S. housing market."
Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee about half of the $11.5 trillion in U.S. outstanding home loan debt.

Subject: Step 2: Ask Tim Kaine the question for his DNC Video this week
* -
Last week you signed DFA's petition asking the new Democratic National Committee Chair, Gov. Tim Kaine, to immediately reinstate the 50 State Strategy and we will be delivering your signature to him directly on Jan 21st -- his first official day as DNC Chair.
The good news is you already got his attention and, last Friday, Barack restated his support for the concept of a 50 State Strategy. Here is some of what Barack said:
"We're in a strong position to build the Democratic Party, renew our commitment to the principles we share, and continue the outstanding work of Chairman Howard Dean. Among his many achievements, Governor Dean launched a strategy to reach out to Americans in all 50 states -- north, south, east and west. This 50-state strategy helped Democrats compete in states where we hadn't in years, including states like Virginia.
Governor Kaine has seen the power of the 50-state strategy firsthand, and under his leadership, Democrats will continue to organize and compete in every corner of our country."
The problem is this isn't enough. It's not a commitment to the core principals of the strategy.
There was no commitment to increase voter registration or develop leadership at all levels of office in every state. No commitment to maintain a national voter information file and allow free access for state and county parties and candidates. And perhaps most importantly, no commitment to immediately reinstate the State Partnership Program that funded DNC Staffers in every state.
We worked hard to reform the Democratic Party. We don't need praise, we need a real commitment.
Gov. Kaine is looking for questions to answer in a video to DNC members later this week. This is our chance to get him to commit to specifics now, before he even officially starts the job next week.
ASK TIM KAINE (AT DEMOCRATS.ORG) TO COMMIT TO THE SPECIFICS RIGHT NOW (
Link
)
...
Barack's inauguration can't come soon enough. If you're like me, you can't wait to work with Barack and Congress to pass very important progressive reforms in the years ahead.

Look, Obama built the best organization and campaign in political history, Kaine is obviously very competent and a product of the 50 state strategy as Virginia Governor.
Let's give these two people who know what they are doing time to come up with a strategy, not just get the commit to not change from the existing. Yes Obama wants the DNC to have a 50 state strategy but it might not be Dean's 50 state strategy.
And it isn't just about Kaine and the DNC. We have a Democratic President now, Obama. Part of the strategy might be him giving more speeches and visits to places like Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Montana, etc.. to built support their and a network.. Dean couldn't do this as we didn't have a Democratic President..the Dems could just have Dean as a representative..
Another thing is because of this online network the DNC can be everywhere..
THe 2010 races won't be won over winning in the states that were battlegrounds in this presidential race..Florida a battleground state will have a close Senate race..but so will NC which is a GOP state, and KY and SD which is a strong GOP state.
Obama has to find a way to help these senators...focus on helping the senators in close races like AK, CO, SD, LA, KY, NC, SC, MO, OH...
If Obama can get us from 59% in the House and Senate to 65% than he doesn't need to worry about all this focus in the "battleground states" in 2012 as he will have enough support in Congress to end the term with talk about whether he is the greatest President of all time.
He will approach 2012 expected to win by 15 points nationally so it really doesn't matter if the GOP challenger gains 3-4 points in OH or FL.
Remember also, Obama doesn't want to reveal his strategy to the GOP who are strategizing the 2010 races.
Another thing, the acting director of the DNC until Kaine ends his term as governor is the person who managed the 50-state strategy for Obama in the Primary and General Election. That should tell you about his commitment to this strategy. Don't worry about it, Obama doesn't need these letters.

I remember Obama saying something about tax relief for home owners .
He said home owners would get 1000.oo in 2009 in tax relief .
Does anyone know anything about tax relief for home owners ?
