Virginia Duplicate Calls | Report to Admin

I've had several Virginia voters indicate that they've received repeated calls with varying degrees of annoyance. Is there any way to ensure that we're not calling the same voter multiple times?

I got the same multiple call problem (3 or 4 calls) in PA. I was calling the Pittsburgh and York, PA areas. I called the Neighbor to Neighbor Help Line.

Emily, on the Help Desk, told me that my calls were the only ones from the official Obama Campaign.

The others come from independent groups, like MoveOn.org or maybe certain labor unions. We all have lists from the same registration rolls. Unfortunately, we are not coordinated, and we cannot control what they do. We were neither totally convinced with the explanation. But it was the best she could come up with without further research -- not useful on the last day of regular GOTV phoning. Tomorrow is the hard court press: Election Day GOTV.

Mr. Chuck Todd said today in Meet the Press that he is worried about having an inexperienced president and a group of inexperienced Democrat senators serving at the same time. I would like Mr. Chuck Todd or any other political analyst to give me one strong reason why I should not be worried about having Sarah Palin, and other “experienced” Republicans in charge of the White House for another 4 years.
What is worse Obama and new senators or Palin and same Bush crew?

I wish there was a place to write a note on the Neighbor-to-Neighbor tool, and to record "would like to volunteer" or "would like a ride." I would also like to return my uncalled phone numbers faster to other campaigners. Many of the NH voters said they had been called many times before. I did not get those complaints from CO voters. Most people I called in NH and CO and reached were standoffish. Getting the occasional hostile opposition to Obama - or an annoyed person - on the phone was frustrating when the list I was calling was supposed to be all confirmed Obama supporters. This usually happened when I reached a person's spouse or parent instead, and the person would not pass on my call to the target recipient. We were instructed at the IBEW phonebank to not leave answering machine messages, but the Obama site instructed us to do that. At first, I did not extend the interpretation to "do not leave messages in general for the person," and dealt with some rude responses. I think the IBEW guidance had it right in telling us not to leave answering machine messages, because it doesn't make sense to me to leave a message with polling place information to a non-supporter.

Others have mentioned this but I am quite concerned about the quality of the Ohio call list. Out of 25 calls, I reached only 1 Obama voter. Everyone else who picked up the phone was either unwilling to say who they were voting for or were clearly hostile to Sen. Obama.

My experience this afternoon calling Virginia voters was much more positive - lots and lots of Obama supporters on the call list, and several willing to even make phone calls themselves from home.

I'm not sure it makes sense for me to continue to call Ohio if the lists are so heavily slanted toward hostile voters. I thought this was the Get Out of Faithful Supporters stage of the campaign!

I printed the list I was given of 15 veterans in Ohio so that I could call while away from my computer. I finished the list but could not figure out how to get the list back on the screen to record the results.
Half of the list had phone numbers that were not in service at this time. Only 1 person was for Obama. The others were McCain supporters and quite hostile.

I have done very well calling Ohio voters. Lots of positive responses. In fact several pro Obama and only a couple hangups, no hostility. Got one guy that was so mad at Bush for being at the helm while UAW went down the tubes. He had lots of real world examples of what to say to Ohio voters. Below is what I've learned from this 30 year auto worker:

First...I don't barge in with "Go Obama", start impartial. Be ready, no initial pause.

I start with "Hi my name is Thom and I'm not a robot, I'm a voter."

"The current administration has been unkind to your state. You have a grand opportunity to change that by voting in Ohio."

...pause...

285,000 People in Ohio have lost their jobs since Bush has been in office, Mcc voted with him 90% of the time, that's what they've done to the state's economy.

Well, you probably know how bad the government has been for Champion, Jeep and Dana, they've run your jobs out of town. (Only Dana remains, huge job losses for all in the area code 419 - 567)

The Big Three aren't doing well either, that's Free Trade at work.

Ohio is suffering the worst unemployment rate in 15 years, thanks to the current administration.

Mcc wants to give tax breaks to corporations that export your jobs to other countries. Why doesn't he want to hold Mexico and China to our standards? That's Fair Trade, not Free Trade, Obama's for Fair Trade. Mcc wants to continue Free Trade.

"The UAW membership has gone down from 1.5 million members to 400,000 since Bush has been in office. Mcc is against Fair Trade. Instead, he wants to continue Free Trade which is crushing the auto industry. US auto industries can't compete when the US doesn't care if foreign car makers undercut our prices. We have health and safety requirements here and they don't because we aren't enforcing Fair Trade, Obama will enforce Fair Trade.

Joe the Plumber lives in Ohio, turns out he is not a licensed plumber and he owes back taxes.

1 in 4 jobs in America were in the Auto Industry back in 2000, now it's only 1 out of every 10 jobs. The "Big 3" are suffering due to Bush and Mcc's "Free Trade" agreements.

Can't make calls!!!!! | Report to Admin

I've been having issues with the N2N tool all day :-/

1. In New Mexico, I was getting two different scripts for various calls. One asked me to ask who the person was supporting, and the other didn't.

2. Additionally, once I was finished with 125 calls there I logged out to take a break and report on the blogs what I had heard. When I came back, it said that I hadn't made a single contact, when I had made 21! In CO, it reported all 3 contacts that I made out of 50 calls. But NM didn't report them at all.

3. I'm still having the issue of calls not showing up on my dashboard. I'm kind of used to this at this point (LOL), but I always thought that the reason why my calls weren't reported was because I was using the old calling tool to call NM all of this time. I thought that those who used the N2N would have their calls listed. But not even half of my calls are showing for today (and I finished ALL of my groups 50 calls--250 today so far). Today is the first day that I've used the N2N tool.

4. And, I've been trying to make calls since 5pm central. I first clicked new mexico, but I kept getting an error message so I tried other states. ALL of the states are giving me this message, and have been for the last two hours (aside from when the site was down):

"Sorry, We were not able to assign you any voters. You can try another campaign that has voters"

So I can't make calls right now!! And I was supposed to make another 250 tonight (or call until 10 central, whichever was less)!! :((

I just talked to a woman who confirmed that she is voting for Obama on Tuesday - but I was the EIGHTH person to call her today.

Luckily, she was friendly about it. But I could imagine votes being lost over this.

PLEASE clean up the duplicates. It's making people on the other end angry and wastes time.

i like making calls to the seniors. the few people i reached in Philadephia were all Obamna supporters; unfortunately, most of the people were not home, nor had an answering machine. even more unfortuntely, some of the phone numbers were disconnected or wouldn't go through.

i read the script, then do my own thing, e.g., I used to live in Philly, so i may start out that way. My enthusiasm and sincerity work well for me!

I've had 2 voters begin swearing at me after I was told this was the 4th and 6th call, respectively.

And none of the couple-hundred calls show up under "Contacts"

It's frustrating to be making calls and suddenly hit a screen that says the site is undergoing maintenance. This happened several times yesterday and today. I realize the system is probably being overloaded so I donated $30 today in hopes that it will go to expanded server capacity.

I called 25 people in VA and 50 in CO. People were very nice in VA. One person told me they were bringing 11 people to the polls! Another woman, living in a HH with 4 voters, said that 3 of 4 were voting for Obama, the other is a single issue voter (abortion). She was very dismayed to attend her church today and without specifically naming names, was told from the pulpit who to vote for. Then, she said the entire parking lot was fliered with McCain fliers.

Voters in CO seemed to have gotten more calls, and were getting frustrated. One man told me they were tracking which campaign was making more calls - and he and his (significant other?) were going to vote for the candidate with the fewer calls. He said that McCain's calls were a "little lame", but according to him, the tally seemed neck and neck, with Obama campaign calls slightly fewer. Wouldn't it be easier to just making it a drinking game? ;) Some people told me they voted, but wouldn't tell me who, so I assume they were for McCain. Some numbers were fax machines, but I wonder if people have just switched it on to avoid the call; I did mark those calls as 'wrong number'.

Still, an exciting experience, and I'm going to try to make 25 calls to PA tomorrow. Just don't take the hostility personally, folks! Think of it as a public service - providing polling locations.

I made 25 calls to Ohio yesterday, the highlight being an 85 year old woman who was a passionate supporter. 50 more to Ohio today. Asked for one voter and was told he was out volunteering for Barack. Several other supporters and another volunteer. But I also had people hang up on me, several who wouldn't say who they support, and 1 or 2 nasty comments about Barack. Many people said they had gotten multiple calls from the campaign. Sure would be better to call more people once than the same people more than once.

25 to Colorado yesterday when it got too late to call Ohio. 4 or 5 supporters, more reports of multiple calls, fewer voters that hung up on me than Ohio

Made about 150 calls today, to VA and NV. About the same results in both locations

A number of people mentioned they had been called numerous times, and visited numerous times. Most of the complaints seemed like more of the simple annoyance variety, but I did have one very hostile person who practically told me off. I just told most people that it was because they were in a swing state, and the number of calls just showed how important their votes were.

I also had a couple of younger voters that I clearly got parents on. I don't agree that parents should be screening calls at that age, if your old enough to vote, you're old enough to decide who to talk to!

Only a few outright McCain voters, but more than a handful hung up on me (I think this should be an option), and when said that Obama was "evil" although she hung up before telling me who she was voting for.

It's kind of frustrating that about a fifth of my numbers were wrong, and that I had so many hostile folk, when these were supposed to be supporters.

One undecided, I'm not sure if I was able to sway him or not.

Hopefully it will be an early night Tues!

I was door knocking yesterday and making calls today to PA. We need Barack, Bill, Hillary and Joe in PENNSYLVANIA. Please encourage them to add PA to their busy itineraries. Some PA support is still soft and McCain and Palin are over there.

We are driving Nevada voters nuts, one guy answered the phone at 8:30 p.m. groggily, saying him and his wife were sleeping. They had already received 3 calls today, I felt so bad.

Anyways, soldiering on... I left a bunch of cellphone and landline messages with polling place info, the Obama election hotline, Link, etc. Basically just trying to facilitate the mechanics of supporters getting to the polls!

I also noticed the age divide, some parents screening calls from their 20-something kids. I hope those kids get themselves to the polls despite their parents. One sweet 17 year old I reached said his parents weren't home, but they are Obama supporters. "I'm so frustrated that I turn 18 one week after the election!" he said. I showed him how to find his local Obama office and show up to volunteer. I think he will.

Thanks for the report. To avoid this, it is essential that EVERYONE making calls please enter the data into Neighbor-to-Neighbor and/or VoteBuilder indicating the response obtained. Do not just make calls! If you find someone who has been contacted already and who has no new information to add, mark them as "Do not call" if that is their preference. Only by entering correct results into the system can we avoid hassling people repeatedly -- see later post in this forum from someone who has been so hassled.

Alan, you mention marking "do not call" if we reach someone who reports getting multiple calls or requests to not be called. I have not seen such an option on any of my online call sheets(to Ohio, Virginia, CO, Alaska). It would be very helpful.
Getting lots of numbers that have been disconnected or in use by different person.

Generally speaking, when I reached people in each of these three key battleground states... the majority of voters claimed to be for Barack. I also found that most people I spoke to had been contacted multiple times already by us and that they had varying degrees of annoyance with respect to this fact. Is there some strategic thinking to re-contacting voters 2, 5, 10 times after they have already been reached and their data submitted? Please advise.

One of the calls I made to FL, a woman told me her parents are life long Republicans but will vote for Obama because they feel McCain is too old. The man served in the military with McCain (!) but will vote Obama-Biden.

I phonebanked from Brooklyn, NY last night and also encountered a big problem with multiple calls. I only got really chewed out twice, but both those people claimed the repeated calling made them so upset they were going to vote the other way. It's impossible to know if they're fibbing, but repetitive calling is a problem that I hope is dealt with soon!

That said: I also spoke to excited and enthusiastic people-- and that makes it all worthwhile.

To Whom it may concern:
I am an UAF Voter and I am Extremely tired of the repeated phones calls from your compaign!
EVERY DAY for the last 2 1/2 weeks I get a Minimum of 4 calls per day! I have asked repeatedly that you DO NOT call me. I am a participant in the NATIONAL DO NOT CALL list.

I have also recieved Knocks upon my door, again your volunteers.

If I were voting for Mr. Obama I would NO LONGER do so now. As harrasment tatics (repeatedly calling and knocking after being asked not to do so) are NOT acceptable behaviour. Before you say oh we couldn't get your name off of the list, Let me say this Mr. Obama,Volunteers and Campaign Managers, John McCain's party called me ONLY ONCE! ONCE! I asked them to remove my name and it was done. I have documented all the phone calls, I have taken the names and copied the various private numbers and public. I am looking into a lawsuit for harrasment. I am posting this because I am Angry with the lack of consideration your volunteers have. The lack of co-ordination and communication. REMOVE MY NAME FROM YOUR LISTS!! DO NOT CALL ME! DO NOT KNOCK ON MY DOOR ANYMORE! It is harrasment and the last I checked against the law.
I am not putting my full name here as your web master can pull it out of the sign up forums. I also do not want supporters of your campaign making contact with me via my email.

Ma'am, we can comply with your request with a little more information. Perhaps the last 4 digits of your phone number would be sufficient for us to find you in the database and mark your number as "Do not call."

As a volunteer who certainly does not want anyone to feel hassled, I also ask for your patience and understanding in this matter.

As a FYI, the National Do Not Call list does not apply to non-profits and political calls. This is as specified in the rules and regulations establishing it. I know this. My company wrote the software for the FTC.

Obama to shut coal mines (fox news)??? | Report to Admin

I just call a 71 lady voter in OHIO. She said that she and her family were going to vote for Obama until last nite (Sunday), when they saw Obama on Fox News in a past interview with a San Francisco Newpaper(?). In this interview Obama had said he was going to shut down all coal plants that are currently running, even though the plants had made efforts to clean up their act with scrubbers, etc. and would fine them heavily until they changed. She thought this spelled certain doom for their region. This was important to her and community because she lives in a coal mining region which depends on coal for the economy. She was also particularly concerned about a side coal mining issue, that is a new development that is occuring in the industry, which involves coal mines selling their dirty coal directly to China. I couldn't tell if she was for or against this new practice that is occuring in their region.
I marked her as a McCain supporter. She is voting on Tuesday.

I would encourage everyone to not get discouraged by rude people, hang ups, etc. That's the nature of any sales calls and we are selling something: the knowledge that Barack Obama is ready to lead and is needed for our country. When calling Philadelphia I received many positive responses. When calling Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA I received many negative responses. The other side is going through same thing, it's normal in elections for the same person to be called many times. So, don't stop calling, Barack Needs Us. We are the Change that We Seek!

I spoke last evening with our daughter in Mississippi. She is a STRONG supporter of our effort, and was very frustrated at the lack of visible effort expended in Mississippi. She reports having gone by the local Obama office at all hours of the day and evening to volunteer and never found it open (in a college town, no less). We are originally from Louisiana, and wish that some of the truly awesome efforts expended in the swing states had been spread around a little more. Rather than multiple calls (and annoyances) to folks in Ohio, Virginia, etc. -- a bit of effort in poor states like Mississippi and Louisiana might yield great results, precisely because it is so unexpected!!!
AND it could do GREAT things to help build our people's party in a place that _really_ needs CHANGE!!!

Well, I feel the same way here in West Texas -- but we have to start somewhere. Just returned from a week of intense volunteering in the Denver suburbs; what an enjoyable and productive experience that was by contrast.

Those of you still working in the battleground states: thanks and keep up the good work. Try not to hassle people (see above) and use the response record-keeping so that we can avoid canvassing or calling people multiple times if they don't want that. But there are plenty of people still to contact, I'm sure, so keep up the good efforts.

Anyone who knows how to take the experiences from this campaign and apply them in other so far non-targeted areas, we need to hear from you to keep this going!

P.S.: My favorite campaign experience so far has been replacing the yard sign for someone who had his family's one taken away by vandals. He asked me how I thought Mr. Obama will do, and I said "I think he will win!" quite honestly. The response I got was so heartwarming that it made up for many hours and days of calling and walking.

While calling PA voters yesterday to GOTV, I ran into one voter who had already received 7 calls from Obama supporters; another had had 4, others had had 3. One had just the minute before had a call and here I come with the same questions. All were annoyed. I asked the folks to be patient with us, which generally worked, but wonder whether local, state and national lists might be overlapping and whether there's any way to coordinate.

Mark anyone you encounter who has been called before using the Neighbor-to-neighbor online tool or VoteBuilder absolutely as soon as possible.

My personal preference would be to have these tools available for the non-targeted states also, since it looks like we are already getting into the multiple-repeated-call territory in the battleground states.

That's what I've been doing; lots of calling for two months now, and much more now.

If people complain that they are getting repeated calls from us, I apologize.

If I am giving out a polling location, I try to remember to mention that MAYBE that location has changed. (I found such a situation with an elderly woman in Florida last evening. She had also been told she could vote early today, Monday, which is not true.)

Final tip: don't waste TOO much time debating with McCain people, while also being prepared to hear some rude people. Don't be discouraged.

I plan to keep calling Tuesday, too, until the last polls close.

Calling CO and NB | Report to Admin

On Sunday I called Colorado and Nebraska. Many people in CO have their phones set to not accept calls from people who aren't on their acceptance list. In CO I have gotten mixed responses, from hanging up on me to enthusiastic voters who are also volunteering. The people who are enthusiastic Obama supporters are all supportive of the calls and actually seem to be happy that they are being called. The rest, not so much. With some folks, I get the feeling that I am their first caller. In Nebraska, the folks with Omaha numbers were supportive, but outside the city they were less so.

I have had husbands who would not let me speak to their wives.

I'm having intermittent problems with Skype. It's my only available phone line, and the connections are often iffy. If I get a bad connection I just tell the person that I'll get someone to call them back and mark them as not home.

BTW: Don't forget that other organizations are using the same call lists that we are - orgs like MoveOn.org. People may be getting multiple calls a day, but they may not be from the campaign itself. It is my understanding that if we mark them as already voted (I talked to this person) or as a Wrong Number, Deceased, or Refused to Talk, then these people will be marked as contacted in the database and won't be called again. Many people don't realize that the calls are coming from multiple organizations and if you get then off of your list, it doesn't mean they won't be called by someone else.

Also, I agree that there should be a place for notes in N2N - and the notes should be read!

This morning I spoke with an 89 year old voter and his wife in VA who waited in line to vote yesterday and "help make history". Also spoke with a woman who's husband is home recovering from bypass surgery, and she said they'd "crawl to the polls Tuesday if they had to." We have some very committed supporters out there!

Many numbers disconnected. Many people already voted and annoyed at the call. One person deceased, I was informed by her frustrated daughter, since 2006! How accurate is this info? I just made 50 calls to PA. I got some machines but real people too. No one was upset at the number of calls they've received. My favorite was a registered Republican who had decided this summer to support Obama. She said she's gotten lots of calls from Obama and NOT ONE from McCain. And, as I noted, she's a registered Republican. I'm going out to put door knockers in my NJ neighborhood and will call again and go to PA tomorrow. Keep the faith.

I called about 25 people in Ohio on Sunday. Most people were very nice-- quite a few more Obama supporters than I expected. Some people claimed to be undecided, but they seemed to be McCain voters who were not willing to give me the bad news! :) Anyway, one of the best calls was to a mother whose little girl answered the phone -- after telling me she was undecided, she then said, "But it's nice to talk to a real person!" And I hope maybe that difference -- talking to a real person from Tennessee who's giving up her Sunday afternoon to call voters -- will tip her to vote for Obama! And that's what it's all about, folks -- one vote at a time! Yes, we can!

I agree with Erica's comment - while phone banking the last two days the number of Obama supporters was off the charts - which is wonderful - what was not was the number of times I heard they were getting called up to 10 times in one day and were getting rather annoyed - several had already voted for Obama - I wish there was a way to organize this better so that we are using our time more efficiently - however, I did help numerous people with locating their polling places in Indiana, North Carolina and Missouri - so I guess in the grand scheme of things if each of us are helping even a few people we are making a difference. Keep up the great work everyone - it is worth it!

My phonebanking yesterday included 80% repeat calls to voters in Nevada. Many said they Barack was going to loose their vote! I decided to continue my phonebanking from home, perhaps there is a more emphasis on micromanaging phone lists to the undecided voters in battleground states. During the primary, we didn't have this problem. My only hope is that our massive calling has moved us to "repeat" call lists. I however will not give up. I hoping to call plumbers, self employed persons like myself.

Honestly, *I* feel that anybody who doesn't vote for Barack because of a few phone calls weren't gonna vote for him anyway.

I think that most who say that will really think about it in the booth... a few phone calls the night before the election, or 4 more years of the same policies?

They'd be getting the same from McCain if they were Republican anyway, and some are getting both the Obama calls (run by real living breathing people) and the smear robo-calls.

1. Smile. Scrawl SMILE at the top of your script or on a piece of blue tape across the top edge of your computer screen. People can hear the smile when you speak.
2. In 99% of your calls, you are that callee's only direct human contact ever with Barack & the Democratic Party.
3. Dial again. Smile again. Each call matters. Kennedy beat Nixon by 1 vote per precinct. Jim Webb won over George Allen in the 2006 Virginia Senate race by 7 votes per precinct. Barack lost in New Hampshire by 25 votes per ward/precinct. Elections are often absurdly close. Your phoning is a treasure hunt to ID &/or energize those few precious voters who can turn the election.
4. Your essential impact is not with information but with friendliness & courtesy. Long after they've forgotten what you said, they'll remember your friendliness, courtesy, & earnestness. "What a delightful Obama volunteer called me last night!"
5. As you develop your own pet phrases & distillations of why Obama is so wonderful & excellent, about the depth and breadth of his knowledge & caring, remember that that callee has never heard your rap before. You don't have to re-invent the wheel with each Live Contact or Voice Mail; you do want to smile & nick a vein of truth & joy with each and every call.
6. The occasional crank. Kill 'em with kindness. How horrible must the poor thing's day (life?) have been to be that rude and cruddy? Water off a duck's back. Phoners are brave & tough in addition to being unfailingly polite & earnest.
7. Hold the ringing phone perpendicular to your ear. If you phone a lot a lot (& hurray for you if you do!), your dear ear can get tender. Also remember to shift ears.
8. Speak slowly. Phone scripts are usually an encyclopedia & what you actually get to deliver is a fortune cookie. Learn the difference between being quick and being hurried. Speak especially slowly & distinctly on Voice Mail.
9. You are an undersung hero of Obama's campaign. Nothing is more efficient and effective in voter contact than a warm-hearted & cheerful phone call. Thank you, valiant phoner! Thank you. Have fun. Let your fingers do the precinct walking!

Don't feel shaky! ;) I just called 25 people in PA - and yes, left some messages with polling locations, but also found a number of people in the Pittsburgh area who are excited to vote for BO tomorrow - including one person whose lawn sign was stolen (among many neighboring McCain signs), but most are just tired of the last 8 years and want a change, and don't want their state to go to McC. So, don't worry, just dial! I think most people do realize that it's crunch time. good luck!

I am working from the Largo, MD office making calls. Today one of our volunteers spoke to a voter from a small town, population 3000, in Indiana. He told us that his family has voted republican but they beleive that Barack is the oly one they trust to bring about the change that is needed to help them get back on their feet. I made over 100 calls yesterday to Ohio. I say it was 50/50 of the people who were home who were voting for Obama. I am calling Missouri right now and have done about 50, going for another 50. I am finding the "Show me State" to be over 50% for Obama.

One last note, I had several people tell me that they appreciate a live person vs the robo calls from the McCain campaign.

of all the people i reached, only a few were mcCain supporters... there was only one person who was annoyed at the multiple calls; everyone understood how important this is. i have to say that for this late in the game, after people have been getting multiple calls on multiple days, sometimes 10 in one day from various sources, every time they spoke about voting for Obama, their voices were HAPPY and excited. the best thing for me from making these calls is the reassurance i got that there ARE good people out there, palinmania notwithstanding.

I've moved on from Ohio to Colorado today. It seems that there are a lot of wrong numbers. I've left some messages on those that have answering machines. I'm not sure if the people whom I've reached are either roommates or someone else, but all declined to take a message.

There were some who had already voted for Obama - they're nice about the umpteenth calls they've received.

One guy told me that I violated the law by asking him which candidate did he support. I told him, OK, I'm sorry for disturbing you and thanks.

I'll be writing a longer post at the end of the election about my wonderful experience of both knocking on doors and calling people not only for Obama but for a candidate for Congress in a close race in the next district and for others. I've gotten the most positive responses today so far. A few people expressed their fear and nervousness about this moment they've been waiting and suffering for--it's like that "it's too good to be true" feeling. But I just told them that the way to not worry is to keep busy and to reach out to one more person, and then one more person. I feel the momentum of our movement among so many people I've spoken to in so many states. Another fringe benefit was that when I called voters in North Carolina, I made sure to also put in a good word for Kay Hagan whose locked in a battle with her now infamous opponent, and looking good. I wish there were a way to reach those other key battleground Senate states, Georgia, Mississippi and Kentucky, because the Senate is just as much in play in this election as the Presidency is, and having those 3 states to call might open up the battle there for Obama. I think Georgia is a strong possibility for him. At any rate, what's most important is that we're doing the best we can with what we have. I think it's incredible how many people are out there plugging away and talking to so many people. The key is just stay positive all the time. Even if you get a machine, you never know how powerful your positive, cheerful, encouraging voice can be for the other person. Just keep being positive person after person and warmly embrace everyone.
Thanks, got to get back to my calls. I have an early day tomorrow as I set out from my home in Northeastern New Jersey to Allentown Pennsylvania to help out there in person, doing whatever they need to make this election a slam dunk victory for the people of America!

One caller said he was so pissed that 7 or 8 Obama people called him while only 1 McCain person called him that he is going to vote for McCain tomorrow. I have encountered very few people like this but I just thought I should, as other people have done, report that our system seems to be quite less than perfect in that it is creating overcalling. I think the volunteers need to be more serious about making a commitment to reach the 10 or 20 voters they get and the Obama campaign needs to be serious about only one person at a time making calls. If a message is left, leave it. Don't have someone call again. Only call the numbers were there was no answer. Anytime contact is made with one person, don't send that voter out to anyone else. Also, if you are doing calls from a printed list, make sure that list is entered ASAP as soon as you are done. Take time out or have someone log it in. It shouldn't even go out to more than one person. There are enough voters who haven't been called that we don't need to piss off people by one person getting 8 calls while 8 other people get zero calls. Let's use our time and limited resources wisely. Thank you.

I've been making calls today (and nothing has been showing up on my profile, so it could be that they are not registering and hence the overcalling.)

I live in Connecticut, moved back here from Colorado over two years ago. My wife and I were slow to change our voter registration and as a result we are both on Colorado lists, as I'm making outgoing calls, my wife has been called 6 times tonight on her own phone.

This, imho, is a serious issue because all of this great effort is actually turning people off.

What can be done?

i have made over 100 calls in my home state ohio. i have been worried about ohio, because when i drive to work all i see is mc same signs. to my surprise, i have not had anyone voice their support for mc cain. i have spoken to mostly elderly people who have already voted. some have recieved several calls. some are not willing to disclose who they are supporting, but most are proud as i am to voice their support for obama. i am feeling very optomistic now, and i am excited to canvass my neighborhood tomorrow after visiting the polls.

I've made a ton of calls, to volunteers asking them to make calls, and to voters in support of our guy. In a few minutes my National Call Team deadline (9 PM) will engage. In general the calling experience was positive, just a couple of episodes of being cussed out in almost 2,000 calls, so that's not so bad. Remember, people died registering voters in the South, back in the 60's, so what's a few harsh words? Thanks to everybody who has done so much hard work. Tomorrow we see the result! And then the REAL work starts, trying to heal the country and pull us together as I am sure only Obama can do. Here's to us all, I hope everybody gets a good night's sleep. Donna Potts

This was very frustrating. Of the 25 people on the list 11 of the numbers had been disconnected! Where did these phone numbers come from? Of the remaining 14, 11 did not answer in prime time evening hours and only 6 had answering machines or voice mail. I was only able to talk to 2 of them and the husband of one who is disabled. I really did not feel like I accomplished very much other than leaving messages to remind people to vote.

I called VA voters today. I grew up in VA and it was so heartening to hear so many fellow Virginians eagerly preparing to vote for Obama tomorrow. I only hit one McCain voter, who was actually very pleasant to me, and no complaints about repeat calls (though a few hang ups as soon as they heard the words "Obama campaign").

Hi all -- I live in Canada and have dual Canadian and US citizenship but since I moved to Canada as a child, I don't have a Social Security Number and can't register to vote in the US (yet). I was so happy to have the chance to help the campaign by volunteering to phone voters. I chose Montana as my call-in state -- Bozeman Montana was my last residence in the US. Everyone was polite and I didn't run into any McCain supporters, nor any duplicates. I also had the wonderful opportunity to speak with members of the Blackfoot Nation -- the homes I contacted on the reserves were very committed to Obama and have great faith in his commitment to help them. One woman said she hadn't voted in years but she is going to vote tomorrow because this time she feels it's really important and she finally has a candidate she can believe in. I hope Obama is ready to work with Native Americans because I heard such heart-felt words of support and hope from the people I talked to on the reserves. This has been an incredibly rewarding experience and I'll be thinking of all of you tomorrow when you vote!
