Hillary's War

In May 2007, months after declaring her run for the presidency, Hillary spoke out vocally against the war in Iraq for the first time in congress.

This was a far cry from her initial support of the war. Not only had she supported it when 23 of her fellow senators had not, she went further than almost ALL her democratic colleagues by claiming that Saddam was working with Al Qaeda, an untrue, republican talking point that scared many Americans into believing that invading Iraq was somehow linked to 9/11, though there was no evidence of this.

She did not read the National Intelligence reports, even though senators that had read it urged the others to do so, saying that the reports would prove that invasion of Iraq was unjustified.

Many colleagues believed that her support of the war was due to insecurity that she might not appear "tough" enough. Note that today, the same insecurities have been suspected as the reasoning behind her exaggerations about her role in Northern Ireland and Bosnia.

Health Care Plan...

Barack has the best health care plan.

Clinton is pushing a plan that will "never" pass because no Republican will vote for a socialist health plan that demands participation. I guess she will "fight" for this plan the same way she was successful in fighting for her other failed health plan. She knows this plan will never fly.

I love Barack. He is the change I have been looking for.

I stand firm and committed to him until he is sworn into office 1/09.

His speech was wonderful. I loved it. He did the right thing. He came out for unity, not divisiveness. His pastor let him down very badly. It is really sad. But I hope the American people see how sincere Obama is that he really wants to rise above these racial divisions.

I just learned that Mr. Obama has refuted and decried the recent statements by Rev. Wright and wanted to express my profound disappointment that the senator has taken this position. While I won't ask for my donation back at this point, I know that I will not be able to speak with pride about his candidacy anywhere any time soon. For Sen. Obama to renounce and break all ties with Rev. Wright indicates a lack of integrity on his part, and a shameful pandering to conservative "Democractic" special interest groups intent on silencing public dialogue. That the senator would cave into their pressures gives me pause about his ability to lead in the future. Change is needed in this country, serious change, but pandering to the unfounded fears of the mainstream in this way indicates the senator is not his own man, but truly a tool of the party and not the kind of independent leader folks really need. It is ridiculous this think the pastor is "trying to take the senator down" - and frightening to me that other Obama supporters would characterize his recent comments as attacks upon the senator or that his assessment of the history of this country was filled with "divisive hate-speech." Not only do folks need to take a good long look at American history, they also need to reinvest in a little thing known as the right to dissent in the public sphere. And, everyone who heard his speeches and has ever studied American history ought to know that what the Rev. said was not wrong. There may have been some things people don't like to hear, but that kind of apathy and ignorance is exactly why the country is the way it is today.

THEN, we talk all day long about this issues that Rev. Wright (rightly, IMHO) raised. But, quite frankly, the good reverend's timing was lousy!

Any conversation about 'touchy' issues that includes Sen. Obama has the best chance of finding resolution.

And by touchy, I mean: race, abortion, immigration, oil & coal consumption, mortgage foreclosures, etc. WHY? Because he listens to people and actually THINKS about his answers.

But first we have to get him a seat at the table for the conversation.

The denouncement needed to be made. This is not the time to be battling the rightness or the wrongness of Pastor Wright. If you know the history of problems in this country, you KNOW them. This is not the time for Pastor Wright to be in the forefront with his views. His views are NOT the views of all of any part of the country. If they are not the views of this candidate, the candidate needed to say so. It is his RIGHT and his TIME to do that. I took personal integrity to make the decisions that Senator Obama has made. He did not rush, he let the situation play out as best he could. He is in a WAR for the people of this country. He CANNOT be detracted. The wise will understand. Some of the issues Pastor Wright mentions need attention, but NOT NOW. Senator Obama did his best to handle his pastor gently. When all else fails, you have to take a stand. He did it. He did it politely. Definitively. Sabra is correct. There is a time for EVERYTHING and this is NOT THE TIME.

I understand your position. But I can't agree.

I think that what happened today is sad. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. But Obama ultimately did what he had to do. And I say that for two reasons.

The first reason is that Wright not only repeated positions that Obama disagreed with, but he amplified them - without providing any evidence for the most striking claims.

A particular example is the allegation of the US government creating AIDS. Yes, we know about the Tuskegee Experiment. But you need some sort of proof before making such a claim. No Presidential candidate can associate with that.

The second - and far worse - reason is that Wright called Obama, in not so many words, a liar - TWICE.

The first was during the Bill Moyers interview, where he stated that Obama distanced himself from Wright's previous remarks because "he's a politician." Wright offered no explanation or context. However, the overall interview went well, and that one bite would have been forgiven.

Then came the Q-and-A session at the National Press Club.

You couldn't have scripted anything more damaging for Obama. Not only did Wright AGAIN say that Obama didn't dissociate himself from Wright, he provided the context to make his points chillingly clear.

Essentially, Wright not only said that Obama lied about not supporting Wright's positions, he also said that he did what he did solely for political expediency. Wright then continued to lay out his positions on Louis Farrakhan, American military actions as terrorism, and other hot-button topics.

Jeremiah Wright is a well-educated man. Therefore, one must assume that he understood exactly what he was doing. For whatever reason - and we may never really know why - he threw his former congregant directly under the wheels of the "Hillary for President" bus.

I think you are making an honest mistake by saying that Obama acted today out of political necessity. The truth is that Obama acted out of a personal frustration and anger that clearly came through in his remarks.

Obama did not do the expedient thing in Philadelphia. He stuck his political neck out in defending Wright. Wright's response was to grab the nearest available hatchet.

As a result, Obama renounced him completely. It looked painful. It probably was even more so. But it was right. It was just. And it was necessary.

I am sorry to hear your disappointment. I would like to put the matter in perspective for you. Rev. Wright may speak truth from his point of view, most people believe what comes out of their mouth. Even deliberate liars have to make themselves believe what they say to some extent. But here is the perspective:

Timing: Rev. Wright may have valid points about the history of slavery in America. But why would he choose to grandstand this inflammatory stance right now, in the midst of a very sensitive effort on the part of Mr. Obama. Why would he not-if he truly valued the man's run for office, consult with him about the speech, knowing the spin meisters were waiting in the wings to shred on every word? What a fool! The Bible called Satan the "accuser of his brethren before God". Rev. Wright is a tool of Satan right now. The sheer genius of timing in this matter is designed to exploit the division in America at a most critical juncture. Open your eyes.

This man got paid to derail Obama. It is as obvious as the nose on his face. He is a paid operative of the very same forces who keep us divided. The very same forces that used black preachers throughout history to keep black sheep penned in the corral. There are NO GOOD SHEPHERDS. THEY ALL WANT THE MEAT AND THE FLEECE!

Your "This is not the time" sentiment reminds me of the response of innumerable white politicians from the North and South to Civil Rights activists who insisted on integrating the schools, the buses, on ending housing discrimination, the poll tax and much more.

If not now, when?

Can I get a side of 40 acres and a mule with that?

Sen. Obama does not get to dictate the issues of the campaign, and the assumption that Rev. Wright has hurt his electoral prospects just shows how frightened some sections of the electorate really are.

Funny how the remarks here and the media overall have jumped on Wright's AIDS comment and said nothing about how he countered the previous charges of unpatriotism and the attacks on his church and the community he has lived and worked in for 30+ years.

Rev. Wright is not running for office and didn't do anything to Sen. Obama. Supporters of the campaign need to stop acting like conservatives conflating the two men like conjoined twins.

If Sen. Obama wants to make a real difference in this country, I believe he too ought to do better than to reduce people to stereotype and sound-bytes. And this IS the time for him to do it. It the ONLY time he has.

There is a progressive section of the electorate which he needs to get elected who have given serious pause to his candidacy not because they agree with every thing Rev. Wright has said (who could?), but because we need someone in office who is really going to advocate for SERIOUS change.

Sen. Obama's performance on this issue is calling that support into question.

Obama disagree, for example, that American government is responsible for AIDS. And Obama is right, and Wright is wrong. America has no purpose to spread AIDS! This was a false offensive inflammatory statement.
It goes against everything Obama stands for.

Obama is a noble person who defended Rev. Wright when everybody attacked him. Obama did it with the risk of his own reputation. Now, the Rev. Wright wanted to have his won 15 minutes of fame, while people are still interested. He made a caricature of himself, as Obama said. He could not wait until after the election, because nobody would listen him then.

I agree. Obama was loyal and gave his reverend a benefit of a doubt during the race speech. For the reverend to turn his back on and accuse Obama of pandering was disrespectful and too much for anyone to bear, and gave Obama no other choice but to sever ties.

Instead of taking the golden opportunity with the press to restore his image and expound on the context of his previous statement, Rev. Wright made a mockery of the question and answer session. I'm afraid it was a disservice to himself, his church, and the Obama campaign.

Did you see Hardball on MSNBC, tonight? It was a support of Hillary that set up the press conference for Rev. Wright to speak. A member of the national press assoc, and the black lady who is always with Hillary, a super delegate who's name is Sheila Jackson Lee. was a member of Rev. Wright's church. Hillary and Bill have a lot of freinds in powerful places. They was to divide the black vote.

Sheila Jackson-Lee is not a member of Wright's chuch. That woman (Hilliary supporter) lives in Houston and goes to a church their. I do think it was a set-up by Rev. Wright who may had conspired with the Hilliary folks at that press conference. Wright is a very jealous man who take down a campaign of hope because he feels like he was humiliated in the press. I am a black woman and think that Wright is an insult to the black church and black people. I am & always be a Obama supporter. Barak had no choice but to dismiss Wright in an assertive, forceful but dignified way. Wright has made a mockery of himself, and portrayed himself at that news conference to be a clown. That is really sad. Black and Whites alike want to be liberated from the divisions. I am proud of Obama, moreso than ever.

You know, I too thought that Rev. Wright was simply speaking out to defend himself and exercising his right to free speech. That was until I heard him accuse Senator Obama of only saying what he has to say to get elected. This kind of attack on Obama's honesty is untenable and certainly cannot go unanswered. He did the only right thing today, and I am simply humbled by the sacrifices Obama is being required to make for our country.

Do not be confused, Barack did not denounce the man, but what the man represents, hatred division,hopelessnes. Rev Wright is his public diplay denounced all that we as Obama supporters strive and HOPE for, a union that does not tear each other down. With Rev. Wright we see an example of a man that has experienced hatred and bigotry for so long that he has become just as hateful of those he perceived to be the source of his pain. I am sure that he was not a bitter man twenty years ago, however no one knows what may have happened to him recently to inflame his anger. Hate is somewhat like a cancer, in the beginning it is painful and leaves many feeling hopeless, however after care and treatment the pain subsides and sometimes go away. Thus the cancer is in remission, however,the cancer is not ever completely gone. Eventually,often years later it returns. It returns with an avenges that is often fatale. Hate and bigotry are like cancer, when the world is at a moment of tranquility hatred and bigotry go into remission. Rev Wright hatred was in a state of remission, what caused him to come out of remission who knows. My point is like cancer we cannot cure hatred and bigotry but with this election we have the power to put them in remission and continue to work to find the cure.

I don't know why you couldn't have been a little less stilted about it. You could have said, "Hey, the guy was a Marine. The guy was on the medical team that operated on Lyndon Johnson. He took a congregation of 800 and made it 10,000. He was born in Philadelphia, he's an American and he can say anything he wants.
"When he says silly things, however, like the American government invented AIDS to kill Negroes, that's like saying the government blew up the towers, or the government killed Kennedy. Just like you, I hope, I am not a conspiracy buff. I am running to redeem the American government. I want the world to know we will never torture another human being. We will never invade another country. We have learned a few things.
"On the other hand, Reverend Wright is an American, he can say anything he wants, and he can come over for supper anytime he wants. Case closed. Let's move on."

Though I agree with you on some things, it is apparent that Wright asserted some rights that he DOES NOT have. He said that it was about the church and HIS 9K members. He said that he was speaking as a Pastor of that church. However, he is no longer a paster of that church. Trinity's pastor is Rev. Moses. I understand that the members of Trinity BEGGED Wright to not go public. Why did Wright drag Trinity's name into the speech, as an excuse to speak out. The spokesman of that church is not Rev. Wright. I too am a military veteran and believe that veterans as all Americans have freedom of speech in this country. But not to take down the whole church whose ministry he built. He can go down by himself, but not take the church with him. Obama is still the man, and Wright is jealous of him !

Yesterday, pastor Wrong attacked averybody. He made fun of John Kennedy, he brought out stuff about Dr. King. In my view, he wouldn't be happy if Obama got elected president because then he couldn't attack the established America as being recist. He is a wacko. He was right on many of the things he said, but HE IS SWIFTBOATING ONE OF HIS OWN. We don't have to wait for the republicans to swiftboats us, pastor Wrong is doing a good job of it!

Some (not all) church leaders like MLK, Jr. for example do take on the government policies of the day,they criticise the policies and institutions that are either unfair or unjust.

That does not mean that if a new elected reresentative gets into office there will be no criticism, if these policies still exist then the criticism will follow.

So it does not matter to those in pursuit of equality, justice and fairness who is at the helm....what matters is pushing for change in government policy, whether domestic or foreign.

As a non-believer I find this whole affair hilarious.
For so many Americans going to church on Sunday negates all of the sins committed during the week. Like one hour per week can somehow make you moral,ethical etc.
Now the press is pushing the idea that this one weekly hour defines our candidate.
The irony is that taking Jesus' words at face value (love your enemies, turn the other cheek, let the one without sin cast the first stone) is thoroughly unamerican. A true disciple of Jesus would be an enemy of the State.

It's not so much what the reverend said, but the tone of voice. I can understand him standing up to defend himself and to even call one's governmental policies into question. But to be so dismissive and flippant of all the questions that were posed to him, showed that he didn't take the gravity of the situation seriously.

I just don't understand how this happened. I believe that Wright is a smart man, so he MUST have known that his media blitz this weekend would draw a hit on Obama.

Why would he jepordize his relationship with Obama, and the power that he had to do something positive. The whole country was waiting to hear his words to see what kind of man he is but when given a chance he really played it up... apparently knowingly.

Is his ego just taking over? Was Wright just so caught up in the attention that he wanted to push it overboard?

I think Obama was right to distance himself from Wright and to catagorically denounce his behavior and controversial statements. I just think Wright had an oppurtunity to make a right or wrong decision about how to handle this and he chose poorly.

Now he's jepordized his relationship with the Obama family, potentially with some of his former parishoners and he certainly will get a broad characterization of "a whacko" based on his media tour.

I just think that Wright really took the wrong path and no doubt it will affect his relationship with the next President of the United States. He had a golden oppurtunity in his hands and made a mockery of it.... just shameful.

Good work today Obama. It's sad that you even had to make that choice, but Wright is clearly only looking out for himself and not the American Public.

Also, I DO think Wright is a good man by heart. I think he just got caught up in all the cameras, large croud and tv audience. I think he's a fine pastor and there was some really good messages and topics in his interviews but I feel he just pushed it too far.

I'm a republican, and will be voting for John McCain. I am, however, very impressed with Sen. Obama, and his handling of Rev. Wright's comments. Sen. Obama is smart and genuine, gifted and inspirational. He and all of you who support him should be justifiably proud in what he's brought to this campaign. I genuinely feel sorry for candidates who are shoved in the midst of a controversy like this one that they did not create, and cannot fix. Obama didn't make the comments, and doesn't support them. That was good enough for me. He has tried valiently to maintain some loyalty to the man who married he and his wife, and baptised their children. We of faith all have fond memories of our first pastor, or the preacher who married us. Still, they are men, just like us, and can fall off the cliff, as Rev. Wright has done. While his feelings may be honestly held, and I cannot imagine what it's like to have walked in his shoes, I do not and cannot respect pastors who are so comfortable with, hateful speech and taking the Lord's name in vain in the pulpit. MLK didn't do that. Billy Graham didn't do that. True shepherd's, black or white, are the blessed peacemakers, the human healers and the sheep's comforters. Somewhere along the line, perhaps blinded by sight of his own face on television, Rev. Wright lost his way, and has veered from his true calling as a minister of the gospel -- the good news -- of Jesus Christ.

As for Sen. Obama, that's a good man you have there. I believe he would make a fine President someday. I just don't think he's ready now, and, honestly, I disagree with a lot of views on the issues. I'm going to vote for the guy who won't raise my taxes anymore.

But if he's elected in November, I won't be disappointed, and will give him the chance he deserves to make the changes he's promised.

Blessings to you and yours, Sen. Obama. You have earned and deserve our nation's respect and admiration. You're handling yourself well. Stay the course, and do not become discouraged. You really are an inpiration to all. May the God of peace and wisdom be with you and your precious family.

I echo that sentiment. My heart breaks for Obama. While Rev Wright had every right to defend himself and his ministry, I just don't understand why he would disrespect Obama that way. This could have been a moment where the pastor could have taught the American public about his religious traditions, but I believe he squandered that opportunity by taking on an air of arrogance and dismissiveness. It is sad for all.

Thank you for taking time out to share your thoughts with us.

You echo what so many of my Republican friends say. Two are going to vote for Obama because they are fed up with the Republican party's abuses of power, and they are somewhat moderate on the issues anyway, but interestingly will not vote for Hillary under any circumstances.

But like you, all but one of my Republican friends and family members who plan on voting for McCain have all said that they are impressed with Obama, even some of my very conservative family members who've gone so far to say that they would feel proud of him as their president.

You sound like a very reasonable person.

But if there is a need for investing for better future of our children and grandchildre, I would not mond chipping in. To give you an example, if you look back when Arnold became Governator, he opposed tax hikes and repealed the infamous DMV fee hike as promised, and we were very happy -- but what he later did was borrowed money at high interest rates similar to using CREDIT CARDS, which will borne by our children and gradchildrens, and worse: the lenders are Chinese and Arab governments putting security of country in jeopardy. Gray Davis wasted the big surplus which California has during dot-com boom, and now we are back 20 billions deficit. We never paid attention to what Gray Davis did until the recall time.

That is a very clever idea to be popular before elections, but as Barack said it is going to hurt us rather than help -- driving in highways with a lot of pot holes will make us spend several hundred of dollars in tire wear and tear and paying every few months for wheel alignment.

I don't think Obama has lost any AA voters...at least he hasn't lost mine. Also, the AA folks who support Rev. Wright and Obama, IMHO, will continue to support Obama, despite the conflict between Rev. Wright.

This is what I have observed, and there is no scientific analysis here. The folks who support Obama, support Obama. Anyone who tries to bring him down, we rise up against those folks and protect Obama's back. In the AA community, I've seen it happen to Bob Johnson and Tavis Smiley. These were two individuals in the AA community, who had some clout, to a certain degree. When these folks took on Obama, they heard it from us. Granted, these were two individuals who were liked (at some point) by majority of AA's. The minute they went negative against Obama, they heard it from us and they may never regain whatever capital they may have had.

Same may be true for Rev. Wright. A lot of us may still like him, and think what he said was truthful (although harsh), but if he is gonna throw Obama under the bus, we, or shall I say I for one, will turn against Wright.

There is just too much at stake this election cycles. And if for whatever reason these individuals like Johnson, Smiley and now Wright can't keep a lid on until this election is over, then they are missing the big picture.

C'mon, is it just coincidence that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have been "relatively" quiet??? I like Jesse and Al, but I kow they can polarize and that could be a turnoff. These guys are looking at the bigger picture and see Obama for the good that he can bring in his presidency. All these other folks, in my opinion, are just haters!!

It was just yesterday that I told my wife that I think Rev. Wright must be mad at Obama for something. I mean, why would he do this now?

Granted the story wasn't gonna go away, but at least it wasn't at the front of the news cycle!!

wright's probably jealous. it's maybe some kind of father/son thing, with the son getting too successful ...

and i understand why this isn't losing AA voters, who can even manage to be supportive of both wright and obama however much the the gap between them widens.

but it has the potential to lose vast numbers of white voters, especially with mccain and clinton both happy to play upon their fears and to fire up feelings amongst the disadvantaged that AAs, immigrants, whomever - are doing better than they are and that they are now the marginalised ...

wright is doing a great job for clinton and mccain both - fortunately, obama is doing a great job for the rest of us ...

I know it may not seem like it, but do you think that sounding off as he has, might be exactly what he WANTED to do?

What would cause him to be so marginalized as to negate any possible political leverage anyone could get, than to sound off in such a way as to get people to declare him "whacko" and to make him seem like he is just trying to get his 15 minutes of fame?

Now, I'm not going so far as to say that Rev. Wright is a martyr, but I would suggest that he is serving as a lightning rod -- "Taking the heat" so to speak.

I agree with alot of what Rev. Wright said, and disagree with some of the more ridiculous parts. However, he has been called many things, but stupid ought not one of them. Egotistical, sure! Opportunistic? check! A student of the Bible? There should be no doubt.

But, to me, there is something about Rev. Wright that reminds me of an old country saying my mother would occasionally use...

"You might burn him for a fool, but you won't get fool ashes."

So, as some have already started to speculate, if the 'Clinton lady' set him up at the National Press Club, I think she got WAY more than she bargained for. If HRC comes out and tries to use this issue, she will surely be seen as stepping even further over the line.

This "distraction" works if it keeps several thousands black people from voting in Gary. It is not about Obama getting the white blue collar vote, it may have the net effect of turning off black voters. They will not vote for Hillary. They will not vote. Voter suppression.

i agree. i could see sense in some of what Wright said, and i thought he was unfairly treated and misrepresented in the sensationalist press - but he's lost me now altogether. his ego has indeed taken over. (I have long noticed that egomaniacs are particularly attracted to being pastors, vicars, what have you - and small wonder). i don't know what he thinks he's doing - it occurs to me, he's a bit like a black male version of Hillary - willing to take anyone down just so long as he stays on top...

obama did well today - has anyone seen a post today by someone named Bev? it was brilliant on this topic - it was called something like: it's ok to get divorced - and was addressed to Obama saying ok, you defended him, and rightly so, but now he's gone too far, and it's ok to say so. it's really good - i recommend it if you can find it ... but anyway - he took her advice!

Isn't is possible that Rev. Wright is trying to milk his 15 min. of fame? Just think of it, on obscure figure that was unknown becomes a national figure overnight. He signs a book deal and goes over speaking tours. His address to the NAACP is broadcast live on national TV on its entirety. It looks that everything is ready for him to benefit from his golden moment.

I have to say that I enjoyed his interview with Bill Moyers, but his address to the NAACP was like a circus and he made a clown of himself. It was a very clever and courageous decision for BO to distant himself from Rev. Wright, and he did the right thing.

Rev. Wright has done already damage to BO's campaign and could do irreversible damage in future if BO had not addressed this issue. Now Rev. can make money from his acquired fame without being a liability for BO.
