When we launched this site over a year ago, many of our earliest blog posts received only a handful of comments each. One year later, the discussions on the HQ blog can easily reach 1000 comments on a single post, and we routinely see close to 10,000 new comments every day.
The community here has become an essential part of the site itself, and it is often the first place that supporters turn to for help. In February, under the subject heading "Where to start?", Terri from Washington asked:
I am completely new to political activism and I need a map of what to do and how to get things done. Like most people, I think, I have absolutely no idea how the candidates get chosen in WA and what I can do to impact that choice.
Shortly thereafter, one of our online supporters responded:
Hi Terry,Sometimes, we have to build our own map. It starts with looking at the condition of our society and our populace, and seeing what is going so terribly wrong. If you can see that much, you are well on your way. After that, the only other requirement is to take action – to take personal responsibility the best you can according to your understanding and ability. No one can do this by themselves, which is truly one of the beauties of the Obama candidacy. He is asking us not to simply vote for him. He is asking us to join him, and to take personal responsibility in redirecting our great nation to one of social equity.… To me, the most important thing is to get involved and to take personal responsibility. We can take personal responsibility to support the Obama candidacy. We can also take personal responsibility in beginning to tackle some of the larger problems in this great nation of ours.I would tend to believe that, if you were to get involved with other like minded individuals, the map which you seek would soon draw itself. It won't happen overnight, but, it will happen.Kurt
