This morning
in Michigan, Senator Obama announced a comprehensive
New Energy for America
plan designed to address the current energy crisis and move America towards a 21st century energy economy. Some of the proposals put forth today include:
Providing short‐term relief to American families facing pain at the pump
Helping create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
Within 10 years, saving more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
Putting 1 million Plug‐In Hybrid cars – cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon – on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
Ensuring 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
Implementing an economy‐wide cap‐and‐trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.

A Whisper:
"What began as a whisper in Springfield soon carried across the corn fields of Iowa, where farmers and factory workers; students and seniors stood up in numbers we've never seen. They stood up to say that maybe this year, we don't have to settle for a politics where scoring points is more important than solving problems. This time we can finally do something....This time can be different." Barack Obama February 5, 2008; Super Tuesday
A ROAR:
“…hear me roar.
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again”
Helen Reddy and Ray Burton from “I am woman”
This time WE MAKE IT DIFFERENT: These two quotes sum it up the feelings of many Obama Supporters.

Here is an excerpt from one of Celtic's links about the Hoosier state:
McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is taking a different approach to Indiana.
Some might call it confident; some might call it laid-back at best.
Asked whether the campaign has any plans to open an office in Indiana, campaign spokeswoman Leah Yoon -- who is based in Michigan, not Indiana -- had a one-word answer: "No."
Hmmm-- either Senator McCain is conceding Indiana, or he and his Campaign are very arrogant about the Hoosier state.

we can change the nations electricity production methods to green methods in 4-8 years. why not do it. al gore says do it. and so do many other people.
lets not take 50 years to do this simple change that will save us trillions over the years.

If you think this can be done, convince those you know to begin. Right now, most of us don't believe we can do this in 4-8 years. If we are not correct, convince us. Do to this you would need to use proof-- and not simply on this site. Your own opinions will not suffice, unfortunately, to bring about such a sea-change in public opinion.
Senator Obama's plan is the best I have seen in my lifetime offered by any Presidential candidate.
I've watched for years as we have done nothing, even though when I was child it was obvious that something must be done about our dependence on foreign oil. (I remember when we stood in line for gas, and many stations had no gas). Senator Obama will change that long inertia-- and I for one am not going to make the perfect the enemy of the good.

Forget about Hillary! It won't happen... NEVER!!!
"Here's the pitch. Superficially, Sebelius screams "change." She is, of course, a woman, which would automatically add to the historic weight of Obama's ticket, generate a ton of positive coverage and possibly appeal to Hillary holdouts. A Democrat, she was twice elected governor--first by eight points, then by 17--of a deeply Republican state, where she still enjoys a 62 percent approval rating. Her popularity and electoral success in a region where Democrats need to do better nicely echoes Obama's pledge to transform the map in the fall, sending a signal that Democrats are serious about competing for Republican votes. Added bonuses: a Catholic, Sebelius grew up in the Buckeye State as the daughter of fondly remembered former Governor John Gilligan. And who better than the governor of Kansas--where Obama's mother was born and raised--to reinforce the heartland side of Obama’s heritage?"

Senator Clinton would be a formidable candidate on the ticket; Governor Sebelius would be too.
This year, there is an embarrassment of riches -- as the pundits are fond of saying; yet, it is true -- on the Democratic side of the aisle. Thank Goodness!
I am rather partial to Senator Hagel, myself. That would single an end to partisan bickering nonsense and the permanent campaign in the clearest way possible. Yet, I know the choice is likely to be a governor.
There are so many great choices. I plan to trust Senator Obama's choice for VP, no matter whom he chooses. So far, Senator Obama and this Campaign have been a political phenomena; I'm don't plan to start second-guessing them now.

Senator Clinton certainly gave us a run for our money in the primaries. I don't think there is much doubt that she is a formidable candidate. She did not appear to believe that Washington needed to be changed during the primaries, though, and that troubles me some, personally. Nonetheless, as I said previously, I will be satisfied with whomever Senator Obama picks as his V.P. candidate.

Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion. Since I did not believe I would see a successful insurgent candidate in my lifetime just last year, I am not about to start second-guessing the candidate and the campaign that defeated the establishment candidate to become the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Also, for me, making certain the GOP, the party that supported the outrageous abuses of our Constitution, is out of power is of paramount importance. It is clear that Senator Obama will respect his oath to uphold our Constitution, which simply strengthens my resolve to see him elected as our President, regardless of his VP selection. In fact, whom he chooses as the VP candidate has very little relevance to me.
I am partial to Senator Hagel, but as I said, whomever Senator Obama selects will be fine with me.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Barack Obama's aides are often praised for their seamless political operation, but have stumbled into a major gaffe, after losing their present for the White House hopeful's 47th birthday on Monday.
Obama was celebrating his birthday by unveiling a new energy plan in Michigan, and holding a fundraising event in Boston.
But his communications director Robert Gibbs said plans by his campaign team to mark the boss's special day in style had gone awry.
"We got him a present that he really needs. And one of our guys was bringing it back and left it in the trunk of the cab last night," Gibbs told MSNBC.

If this is the only mistake they have, or will make, though, wow! I'm attempting to have a typographical error free day, myself, so I can hardly judge this ONE mistake by this phenomenal campaign.

Yes, legislation like that is exactly what this Country needs. Another very important piece of legislation is the law authored by Senator Obama and Senator Coburn (R-OK) that allows all of us to search how and where our tax dollars are being spent.
Link
This is one heck of a rabbit hole, but it is the right step toward changing Washington for the better and making the entire process MORE TRANSPARENT.
Senator McCain speaks often about government reform; yet, in all of his long decades as a Senator, Senator McCain has done nothing that is the remote equivalent of this law in letting us see what our Government is doing with our tax dollars.
Good intentions alone are not enough-- one also needs to understand both the internet and computers (which Senator McCain admittedly does not) to develop something like this site which opens the door to all of us to follow our dollars at work, and determine if the spending is inefficient, wasteful, dumb or brilliant, or a combination of all.
Senator Obama co-authored this bill and got it passed in 2006. Despite long decades in the Senate, Senator McCain never opened up our government to our eyes in any way remotely equivalent to this.
Senator Obama understands and embraces the internet, which includes its more rapid, and efficient communications, as well as its ability to expose government actions to public scrutiny. Conversely, Senator McCain does not know how to use a computer-- or even turn one on-- without assistance.
We need a 21st Century President in the 21st Century-- there is only one such candidate running this cycle and his name is Senator Barack Obama.

This particular troll may have deserved the insult; yet, there are many -- even some who don't yet, or will never, support Senator Obama's candidacy -- who do not. Please, let's leave the insult the American People strategy to Senator McCain and his Campaign. Some people simply disagree with Senator Obama philosophically and not because their minds are closed. Some are cynical that government can do anything (and after the last 7+ years of incompetent, often corrupt governance who can blame them?) and some are simply afraid of change, no matter how necessary.
I know many people who are on the fence (wobbling back and forth) and insults from us will probably drive those folks over to Senator McCain. Please, Let's leave Senator Obama's opponent to make that mistake, especially since he currently seems to be campaigning mainly on insulting many Americans, like us.

I have met young people whose minds are closed tight as drums. I have also met elderly people whose minds are wide open-- more so, on some occasions, than my own. This is purely anecdotal information, obviously; nevertheless, from my own life experience, I don't believe open mindedness is age specific, or that youth immunizes anyone from rigidity. Obviously, I have also met people who are the reverse and people who fall everywhere in between.
The one thing I believe I have discovered is that stereotyping is never useful, no matter at whom it is aimed.

Lane Evans Veterans Health and Benefits Improvement Act of 2007 - Senator Obama introduced that bill.
Senator Obama passed an amendment that became law requiring the Department of Defense (DOD) to report to Congress on the delayed development of an electronic medical records system compatible with the VA's electronic medical records system. DOD's delay in developing such a system has created obstacles for service members transitioning into the VA health care system.
Part of the Lane Evans Veterans Health and Benefits Improvement Act, which Senator Obama reintroduced in January 2007, would help veterans transition from the DOD health system to the VA system by extending the window in which new veterans can get mental health care from two years to five years. The Lane Evans bill also would improve transition services for members of the National Guard and Reserves.

The Lugar-Obama initiative is modeled after the Nunn-Lugar program that focuses on weapons of mass destruction in the former Soviet Union. Lugar and former Senator Sam Nunn (D-GA) authored the program in 1991. It has provided U.S. funding and expertise to help the former Soviet Union safeguard and dismantle its enormous stockpiles of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, related materials, and delivery systems. Among many accomplishments, the program has deactivated 7,000 nuclear warheads and reemployed 58,000 scientists in peaceful research. Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan are nuclear weapons free as a result of cooperative efforts under the Nunn-Lugar program. They otherwise would be the world's the third, fourth and eighth largest nuclear weapons powers, respectively.

Civics is not a required high school course any longer? I did not know that. Yet another problem of concern to everyone. Every high school student should take a civics class. How else can we as a society ensure our citizens understand how our government works, how it came to be, or how to sustain it and our liberty? Goodness, this fact is depressing. Are you certain about it?

Countries, such as those in Europe.. with 100% Health Insurance also pay A LOT MORE in taxes than we do here in America...for that social service Health Insurance Program. We need to decide as a Nation....do we want to self fund Health Insurance as we've been doing it, enjoying our low tax system? OR do we want to ante up higher taxes to collectively pay for it? I honestly do think..that's the hang-up.

Ten senior Hess Corporation executives and/or members of the Hess family each gave the maximum of $28,500 to the joint RNC-McCain fundraising committee, just days after McCain reversed himself to favor offshore drilling, according to Federal Election Commission reports.
Nine of these contributions, seven from Hess executives and two from members of the Hess family, came on the same day, June 24th, the records show. The total collected in the wake of McCain's reversal for the fund, called McCain Victory 2008, from Hess execs and family is $285,000.
We were alerted to the contributions by Campaign Money Watch, a non-partisan group that tracks campaign contributions. The contributions were given a quick mention deep in a report the group issued late last week, but with no names or other details provided. The Hess contributions are clearly newsworthy on their own.
The Washington Post reported last week that campaign contributions from oil industry execs rose in a big way in the last half of June, after McCain drew a huge amount of attention by reversing his opposition on June 16th to the federal ban on offshore drilling.
These Hess contributions, however, hadn't been reported until now, and they will give more ammo to those arguing that McCain is being rewarded by campaign contributions in exchange for pro-industry positions. Here's a table detailing the contributions:
J. Barclay Collins Hess Corp. Attorney $28,500 19-Jun
John B. Hess Hess Corp. Executive $28,500 24-Jun
Susan K. Hess Homemaker Homemaker $28,500 24-Jun
Norma W. Hess Retired Retired $28,500 24-Jun
John J. O'Connor Hess Corp. Executive $28,500 24-Jun
Lawrence Ornstein Hess Corp. Senior VP $28,500 24-Jun
John Reilly Hess Corp. Executive $28,500 24-Jun
Alice Rocchio Hess Corp. Office Manager $28,500 24-Jun
John Scelfo Hess Corp. Senior VP of Finance $28,500 24-Jun

We have not had a sensible energy policy for decades. We have hardly increased mileage standards for vehicles and we have practically exempted SUV's from the standards we do have, on the dubious claim that these vehicles are trucks. Trucks are exempted for obvious reasons -- the need to use them to haul material, etc. Obviously, most SUV's are NOT utilized like many trucks are used in day-to-day work operations.
When I was a child, we stood in lines waiting for gasoline because of the formation of OPEC. Now, here I am with grey in my hair and we have done very little to change our dependence upon OPEC. Tomorrow, OPEC could do again what they did to us in the '70's. Yet, we have done very little-- why? Big oil has one powerful lobby in Washington. Also, our automobile manufacturing companies have ALSO lobbied against a sensible energy policy-- and today, those companies are paying for that ludicrous policy in an inability to compete.
It is LONG PAST TIME that Washington plan for our Country's long term welfare, instead of simply planning for the short-term profits of a few big industries with vast amounts of $$$ to donate to political campaigns and many, many lobbyists on their payrolls.
This is yet another reason, in a long long list of reasons, to vote for and elect Senator Obama as our next President.
ALSO-- CORRECTION-- I incorrectly used mph (miles per hour) in prior posts on this topic. I meant mileage standards. I did not mean the speed limit on our roads; I did mean the amount of miles we can drive on a gallon of gasoline.

Lugar-Obama Nonproliferation Legislation Signed into Law by the President
Authored by U.S. Sens. Dick Lugar (R-IN) and Barack Obama (D-IL), the Lugar-Obama initiative expands U.S. cooperation to destroy conventional weapons. It also expands the State Department's ability to detect and interdict weapons and materials of mass destruction.
"The United States should do more to eliminate conventional weapons stockpiles and assist other nations in detecting and interdicting weapons of mass destruction. We believe that these functions are underfunded, fragmented and in need of high-level support," said Lugar, Republican leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"The Lugar-Obama initiative will help other nations find and eliminate conventional weapons that have been used against our own soldiers in Iraq and sought by terrorists all over the world," said Obama. "The Nunn-Lugar program has effectively disposed of thousands of weapons of mass destruction, but we must do far more to keep deadly conventional weapons like anti-aircraft missiles out of the hands of terrorists."
The Lugar-Obama initiative would energize the U.S. program against unsecured, lightweight anti-aircraft missiles and other conventional weapons. There may be as many as 750,000 man-portable air defense systems in arsenals worldwide, and the State Department estimates that more than 40 civilian aircraft have been hit by such weapons since the 1970s. In addition, loose stocks of small arms and other weapons help fuel civil wars in Africa and elsewhere and provide the means for attacks on peacekeepers and aid workers seeking to stabilize war-torn societies. In Iraq, unsecured stockpiles of artillery shells and ammunition have been reconfigured into improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that have become an effective weapon for insurgents.
"Lugar-Obama would also strengthen the ability of America's allies to detect and interdict illegal shipments of weapons and materials of mass destruction, a critical step in securing these weapons before they ever fall into the hands of terrorists that has not been a focus of current anti-terrorism efforts," Obama said.
Lugar and Obama traveled together to Russia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan in August 2005 to oversee a number of Nunn-Lugar projects. In Ukraine they saw a conventional weapons facility that is typical of the focus of the new legislation.

McCain is the only thing we have to fear - FDR |
Report to Admin
By
InnerNinja
Aug 4th 2008 at 1:03 pm EDT (Updated Aug 4th 2008 at 1:03 pm EDT)
These days the world seems to be teetering on the brink of another Great Depression, another Great War, and all around us is fear, ignited by our leaders and fanned by our media. We've spent billions on fighting terror in places like Oklahoma for goodness sake!
With a critical election looming, the same shady character assassins are emerging to help John McCain become the next George Bush. They're trying to suck the hope out of the world and replace it with fear. The media and major new outlets thrive on our fear as we sit riveted to news of another apocalypse, while stories of people selflessly helping one another go unheard. It's time to take a step back and have a gut check. Are we cowards?
FDR, the man who presided over the second World War and the Great Depression, famously said in his first inaugural address, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." By negating the paralysis fear induced, he helped a nation regain it's swagger for the next 70 years.
America is at another crossroads. Coming off the American Century, we've got a crippling credit crisis, a greedy corporate culture, and the thinly veiled perpetual state of war popularly referred to as America's War on Terror. Do we face these issues with courage, optimism, and hope... or do we succumb to the fearful, misguided, and arrogant policies of the past 8 years?
The choice is clear. The moment is epic. The only thing we have to fear is McCain himself.
Are you with ME!!!

I am with you.
Not only do stories about people helping each other go unreported, the MSM actually joins in the claim that it is naive to believe that we can help each other and that we can act together to change Washington so that it works for the long-term welfare of this Country (as the Constitution requires), rather than simply the short-term profits of a few large businesses.
If the American colonists had believed that they could not work together to achieve their liberty from Great Britain, we would still be part of the English Empire.
If Americans had believed that they could not work together to win WWII, we might all be speaking German or Japanese.
History proves that this can be done-- it is naive to believe that we cannot work together. It is either naive, lazy or simply distortion to dissuade us. All of this is driven to maintaining the status quo-- and the status quo has us in this mess, it is time to change it!

Don't you love the name "Swiftboat Veterans for the Truth"? Republicans have such a way of coming up with names of things that are exactly the opposite of what they really are.
Remember the "Clean Air Act"? It had nothing to do with clean air, but how to avoid regulations that would help keep the air clean.
How about the "Patriot Act"? That had nothing to do with being patriotic, it was about stomping on the constitution.
Now, Swiftboat Veterans for the Truth ... what a joke.
Time for lunch. Everyone have fun and donate until it hurts for every troll that appears today.

The immaturity of the hate argues against an elderly person, with many, many decades of living under his or her belt.

*****HAPPY BIRTHDAY SEN. OBAMA. THE WORLD CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU CELEBRATING YOUR 48th AS US PRESIDENT.******
btw, there is nothing wrong with you being the world's darling because:
1. if the world loves america's president, it surely does love america as well.
2. your energy is a source of positive change for the whole universe.
so perhaps you may even want to capitalize on your global popularity, develop an ad that appeals to americans in a way that relates to their personal lives. or find a well respected surrogate to deliver the same message on your behalf.
in fact, how about using republicans' ads to your advantage, e.g. the celeb ad, you could turn it's expected negative impact around. by drawing parrells and similarities; there are definitely good things that paris & britney do for americans, you could pick on such stuff in a manner that boosts your 'celeb-like' approach, but making sure you convey how this can help you solve americans' problems. and maybe using humor too

That book has already been debunked as filled with a bunch of lies. All you ever have is the fear factor. This worked on John Kerry but we are standing up to you ignorant fools this time and singing out with a loud NOT THIS TIME. You are wasting energy here. Barry's plan gives a lower budget deficit than McCain. Why would anyone vote for McCain?
Until republicans can explain why they propose HIGHER TAXES then Obama and why republicans support a HIGHER BUDGET DEFICIT than Obama, they have NO CHANCE of winning this election.

For all of those on this blog (and THERE ARE MANY) who FREAK OUT regularly about every little thing.... What follows is some wise analysis from Chuck Todd at First Read:
"With exactly three months until Election Day and three weeks until the Democratic convention, it's worth recounting what has taken place during this summer lull in the presidential race. Clinton stumped for Obama in Unity, NH; Obama began moving to the center on several issues (most recently on offshore drilling); Obama also went on his highly publicized (and pretty well-received) overseas trip; Maliki ended up endorsing Obama's timeline for withdrawal at a time when many began praising the surge for reducing violence in Iraq; and McCain's campaign took a negative turn (airing the Britney-Paris ad, charging the Obama camp for playing the race card, and producing that Jesus-Moses Web video). And still, the race is pretty much where it was when the summer began. (That’s why they call it a lull, right?) Nationally, Obama holds a lead over McCain in the mid-single digits, and the Illinois senator has a wider map to play with, although McCain does have chances to turn New Hampshire and Michigan red. Where the race was three months ago is where it is now…"
There you go folks... As I have often remarked on this blog, I will start paying serious attention to trends in polling etc... beginning on OCTOBER 1st (the rest of this stuff is basically a lot of NOISE).

Obama's speech is a must read! It is a call to arms. It ushers in the green industrial revolution of the 21st Century. Once again, we can become a producing nation, rather than merely a nation of consumers. Obama has meshed national security, energy, and jobs into one comprehensive plan to move the nation. Obama delineated very serious policies, not sound bites, for addressing the long-term and short-term issues that are having such a dramatic effect on people who are working and trying to make ends meet. Obama offers our nation new ideas and enthusiastic leadership to solve the massive issues that faced our nation. It has fired me up!

He has never confused Sunni/Shiite Muslims. He did not proclaim that ths surge created the Anwar Awakening when in fact it took place before the surge. I could go on and on but what's the point. In addition to an evening fundraiser with Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, Michelle Obama is also going to host a round table discussion with military families on Wednesday afternoon.
It looks like a full day affair for the wife of the presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. Michelle Obama goes back a ways with Kaine and his wife Anne Holton, Obama helpes campaign and fundraise for Kaine 2005 race for the Executive Mansion, and Kaine has returned the favor barnstorming all over the country for Obama's presidential campaign.
So far there aren't too many details about the discussion with military folks, but clearly this is an effort to at least put a dent into Republican John McCain's connection with the local military population. McCain is going to have a distinct local advantage, especially because he lived here for a time as a young naval airman.

Why Obama is losing the pundit race ... and winning the election.
by NCrissieB
Mon Aug 04, 2008 at 06:16:57 AM PDT
To read many of the diaries and comments here on DKos over the past four days, you'd think John McCain had turned the tables on Barack Obama and was now favored, or that McCain had at least drawn even. There's a good reason for that mis-impression: Kossacks spend too much time listening to (and complaining about) pundits, and not enough time looking at the underlying mathematics of the race.
Follow me over the fold for an explanation of why Obama is losing the pundit race (and he is) ... and winning the election (and he is)....
Note: All of the math in this post is taken directly from Nate Silver's excellent site, fivethirtyeight.com. And I'll come right out and ask Mr. Silver(poblano) to correct any shortcomings in my descriptions of his methods.
NCrissieB's diary :: ::
Yes, Obama lost the pundit contest last week. Which is to say, depending on which media you watched and read, you were likely to see pundits and guests criticizing Obama, and giving McCain free media by rerunning his ads in the guise of discussing them. It wasn't the first week that Obama has lost the pundit contest, and it won't be the last. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and suggest that Obama will lose the pundit contest through November ... and right on through his two terms as president.
And perhaps by its nature - most of us aren't campaign strategists, math geeks, or first-hand journalists - DailyKos is largely a mainstream media analysis website. That is, Kossacks read the newspapers and watch cable news shows, and comment on what we read and see. That means the widely-loathed mainstream media (MSM) usually sets the narrative here, and most of us jump to or on what they say.

Nov. 5th 2008 "Mission Accomplished," Ben from Monroe, NY HAPPY ELECTION DAY!!!!
Aug 4th 2008 at 1:34 pm EDT (Updated Aug 4th 2008 at 1:34 pm EDT)
So it's easy to get the impression, reading DKos, that Obama must be doing something very wrong, because we mostly rehash what MSM pundits have said, and most of them don't much like Barack Obama. He doesn't play to them as much as they think they deserve. He has the audacity to talk directly to We the People, rather than relying on them to frame his message. When Barack Obama draws a crowd of 25,000 - versus McCain's whopping crowds of 250 - that's 24,750 people who heard Obama first-hand rather than waiting for the media to filter and frame what he said.
Worse, Barack Obama is both willing and able to turn an ordinary campaign speech into a "newsworthy event." When 25,000 people turn up in a hall or stadium to hear someone speak, the speech itself becomes an event that commands attention. Often, in this campaign season, that's meant cable networks covering Obama speeches live, as they did in Berlin. And that's yet more people - the viewers - who'll hear Obama first-hand rather than relying on the media to filter and frame him.
Barack Obama's charisma, combined with his outstanding campaign staff, make him a threat to the MSM monopoly on political awareness. Unlike a traditional candidate, he doesn't need to kowtow to reporters or pundits in the hope they'll portray him in a good light. He can, and has, and will go directly to We the People. The MSM don't like that one bit, and that's why Obama is losing - and will likely continue to lose - the pundit race.
But as for the election....

Nov. 5th 2008 "Mission Accomplished," Ben from Monroe, NY HAPPY ELECTION DAY!!!!

A week ago, Barack Obama was a 3:2 favorite to win the election.
Today, Barack Obama is a 2:1 favorite to win the election.
A week ago, Barack Obama was likely to win 273 electoral votes (EVs).
Today, Barack Obama is likely to win 303 EVs.
Those statistical predictions are far more important than how many pundits wrote or said what because every election is, by nature, a statistical event. Specifically, an election is a statistical estimate of the vox populi - the voice of the people. It's only an estimate, because not all of the people vote. But it's an estimate based on the set of people who are legally eligible and are motivated enough to go cast a vote.
"But Crissie," you say, "the polls show this is a dead heat!"
No they don't, because national opinion polls don't estimate the same process. We don't use a national popular vote, which is what national opinion polls estimate. A presidential election is a simultaneous series of fifty state elections. National opinion polls are as meaningless as the nationwide popular vote on election day, and the total of runs scored by each team in the baseball World Series. That's not how either event is scored.
The most mathematically rigorous statistical analysis available - Nate Silver's fivethirtyeight.com - estimates the actual process of a presidential election, by estimating state-by-state outcomes and thus total electoral votes. Specifically, Mr. Silver determines each candidate's win probability for each state, based on the mean of polling data in that state, weighted for the recency and reliability of each poll, and then adjusted for state demographics and trend data.
For example, as of today Barack Obama has a 98% win probability for New York, while John McCain has a 99% win probability for Alabama. Virginia is a dead heat, with Obama's win probability at 53% to McCain's 47%.

Aug 4th 2008 at 1:40 pm EDT (Updated Aug 4th 2008 at 1:40 pm EDT)
Each day, Mr. Silver runs 10,000 simulated elections. In each of those elections, each state is allocated randomly based on the candidates' win probabilities. Simply, Barack Obama will win New York in about 9,800 of those simulated elections, while John McCain will win in 200. McCain will win Alabama in about 9,900 simulations, while Obama will win it in 100. And Obama will win Virginia in about 5,300 of those simulations, while McCain will win it in 4,700. Mr. Silver then totals the electoral votes, by state, for each simulation, and analyzes the data.
A week ago, out of 10,000 simulations, Obama won in 5,980 while McCain won in 4,020. A week ago, Obama averaged 273 electoral votes to McCain's 265. A week ago, Barack Obama was a 60:40 favorite (3:2) to win the election.
Today, out of 10,000 simulations, Barack Obama won in 6,610 while John McCain won in only 3,390. Barack Obama averaged 303 electoral votes to McCain's 235. If the election were held today, Barack Obama would be a 66:34 favorite (2:1) to win the election.
Simply put - based on the most sophisticated, rigorous mathematical analysis available - Barack Obama's chances of winning, and his likely margin of victory, improved significantly last week. And this in a week when so many Kossacks thought Obama "took a beating," that he was "falling into the Kerry trap," that he had to "take the gloves off and start hitting hard."
All of those impressions might be true if our presidential elections were like the old college football system, where the winner was decided by the sportswriters. But, fortunately, that's now how we decide elections. We let the people vote - state by state - and according to those numbers ...
... Barack Obama had an amazing week.
Barack Obama will probably continue to lose the pundit race, for the reasons I gave above. And because DailyKos is largely an MSM analysis forum (understandably), we'll continue to fret over the pundit race.
But the pundits don't decide the election. If they did, Barack Obama would never have won the Democratic nomination, because they were all certain that Hillary Clinton would sweep it up by February 5th. They don't like losing that kingmaker status, so they'll continue to dump on Obama. But right now, Obama is winning the only race that matters: the race for 270 electoral votes.

Energy Plan |

Aug 4th 2008 at 1:32 pm EDT (Updated Aug 4th 2008 at 1:32 pm EDT)
Obama Delivers a Real Energy Plan for America: Efficiency Now, 10% Renewables by 2012, One Million Plug-ins by 2015
Senator Barack Obama has fulfilled the promise of his earlier climate plan with a detailed and comprehensive "New Energy for America" plan.
This is easily the best energy plan ever put forward by a nominee of either party. By comparison, the plan of John "Nothing but Nukes" McCain is a joke, with nothing on energy efficiency and a pointless $300 million battery prize and long-standing opposition to renewable energy. In contrast, Obama's plan has real depth and breath:
* Increase Fuel Economy Standards: Obama will increase fuel economy standards 4 percent per each year while protecting the financial future of domestic automakers....
* Invest in Developing Advanced Vehicles and Put 1 Million Plugin Electric Vehicles on the Road by 2015: As a U.S. senator, Barack Obama has led efforts to jumpstart federal investment in advanced vehicles, including combined plug‐in hybrid/flexible fuel vehicles, which can get over 150 miles per gallon of gas... [more details below]
* Partner with Domestic Automakers: Obama will also provide $4 billion retooling tax credits and
loan guarantees for domestic auto plants and parts manufacturers, so that the new fuel‐efficient
cars can be built in the U.S. by American workers rather than overseas.
* Mandate All New Vehicles are Flexible Fuel Vehicles
* Develop the Next Generation of Sustainable Biofuels and Infrastructure
* Establish a National Low Carbon Fuel Standard: ... The standard requires fuels suppliers in 2010 to begin to reduce the carbon of their fuel by 5 percent within 5 years and 10 percent within 10 years.
This is the only way to jumpstart an end to our addiction to oil in a climate friendly way. Indeed, an accelerated transition to plug-in hybrids and electric cars -- a core climate solution-- must be the cornerstone of any serious effort to dramatically reduce oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (see "Why electricity is the only alternative fuel that can lead to energy independence"). That is the crucial litmus test for any presidential candidate's energy independence or clean transportation policy.

Getting Democrats registered to vote is an effort that can help deliver victory for us in November. PLEASE TAKE ACTION!
Here are links to the Board of Elections for all 50 states + DC. Find voter registration forms here and get contact information so you can call and ask your Board about the requirements for registering voters in your state.
Registering voters can be a pretty quick and simple process. I keep a stack of registration forms with me and just in going about my day, I have been able to register friends, neighbors, sales clerks, people at sporting events, and even the plumber who was fixing our faucet!
Again, be sure to find out registration requirements for your area and also please remind people about the IMPORTANCE OF BRINING PROPER I.D. WITH A CORRECT ADDRESS ON VOTING DAY. Thank you.

I think you need to chill a little bit about HRC bashing.
If we are going to use a word,NEVER,like you did,you can use that on Sebelius.
Or let me say it this way,if it's going to be a woman,it's going to be Hillary.
I would go for Bayh, since he can bring in Indiana, and Unity the party even more.
Second of all,Sebelius will not put any states in play, and she is not even near a fighting spirit like HRC is. And picking her will p-ss off many women.
I'll bet 1,000 $,it's NOT going to be Sebelius.

I know Barack wants to win over evangelicals and Sebelius has had a pretty rocky relationship with the Catholic church to say the least.
I also think Barack might go for someone who's more of a moderate.
That being said- I myself would have no problems with Sebelius being on the ticket.

Thanks! I was just coming on to post a reminder...and here you are! We hope to have a local TV station cover the 'completion..last stitch' of this quilt on Friday! Then, we hope to have more donations from people who have not yet been to the site to contribute to Barack!
In the meantime, it is party time, time to ignore the trolls, and please consider giving to Barack thru our page (see link above). YES WE CAN!!!
