For three nights in Minnesota, the speakers at the Republican National Convention have chosen to abandon issues in favor of attacks and have chosen politics in favor of policies. As Campaign Manager David Plouffe explained late last night:
John McCain's attack squad of negative, cynical politicians... lied about Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and they attacked you for being a part of this campaign. But worst of all -- and this deserves to be noted -- they insulted the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in our political process.
Last night, tens of thousands of supporters challenged that notion with their voices and their actions, many of them right here on the HQ blog. Supporters like Nancy from Texas:
I am a Hillary supporter who made a seamless transition to Senator Obama. However, I have been slow to donate money. But I just donated $100, and I need to do more.We cannot sit on the sidelines.
Sheri from North Dakota:
Last weekend I went to 200 houses. This weekend -- 240. I will be making phone calls in the evenings, and I just donated $20.
And AJ in Illinois:
What I love about this campaign is that when we're happy, we mobilize. When we're sad, we mobilize. When our patience is tested, we mobilize. And when we're furious, we mobilize.
Patricia from Kansas explained:
Senator Obama has tried to make this campaign about the issues. That appeals to me. What the Republicans displayed last night is more of the same old thing -- unproductive politics. I hope and pray that the American voters will see through this and realize that we need a different mindset and approach if we are ever going to get things done in Washington.
These supporters understand their role -- donating, making phone calls, knocking doors and organizing in their communities. Tonight, as John McCain takes the stage for the final night of the Republican National Convention, do not forget that you have a part to play in this process and this election as well.
