I was talking to an old political operative recently from Nevada-- ex-GOP no less-- who's angry at the GOP for their hotheadedness toward Russia, which he fears could endanger the safety of his own kids. He knows how Republican campaigns work from the inside, and he had some very clever tips to help Obama's campaign hit McCain hard:

1. The theme of Obama's campaign should be economic populism first and foremost. Obama should come off as a champion of working Americans who are suffering in this RECESSION and should repeatedly state the word RECESSION. Whatever the technical debates, for ordinary people, there's no doubt this is a recession. Mention specific cases of foreclosures, layoffs, suffering from inflation, and link this specifically to McCain and his policies as the "incumbent candidate" of George W. Bush. Even in the debates or Q&A's, whenever the topic veers to something like national security, Obama should find a way to link it back to the recession. Remember, a message has to be uttered repeatedly to sink in.

2. Link McCain to the most-hated figures in our recent economic malaise: The fat-cat, foolish corporate executives who lay off their workers, run their companies into the ground, and yet leave with $50 million golden parachutes. To the corporate tax cheats who screw American workers, paying $0 in tax. To the thieves at Enron. Link McCain to the oil barons and defense barons making billions at the expense of the US taxpayer.

3. Drum the message in, and hit McCain hard. As my consultant friend said-- neurons that fire together, wire together, and Obama has to be relentless against McCain, focusing on the economy. Obama shouldn't be afraid to criticize McCain-- it's not "bad negative campaigning" since Obama is criticizing McCain on substance, and he's doing it as a champion of ordinary Americans.

4. Tune out the distractions-- Obama shouldn't be too bothered playing defense against the GOP on issues like national security, b/c that's exactly what the GOP wants, to frame the issues. Focus on the economy.

5. Continue to portray McCain as a hothead. McCain has a tendency to fly off the handle, and Obama should exploit this to hit McCain hard. Do a send-up of the LBJ campaign's nuclear disaster ad that brought down Goldwater.

6. Finally, give short concise answers and sound-bites, things that stick in people's minds, and state them repeatedly.

You are right...That is a great strategy. Obama can't be afraid to go after McCain. Most people realize that being a soldier does not make you a good President. I would like to see the campaign not honor John McCain every time they speak because it mutals the message and his great service is the thing that you remember.
I also agree that Obama should give the answer first with a quick sound bite. Most people can't remember long drawn out responses because they are inundated with way to much information on a daily bases.

Please go to Huffington Post and read the editorial by Steve Almond. "Obama, when they lie, call them a liar!!!" It is great. We need a game changer and I think this might help. I am all for being nice, but they don't play nice. Time to show them who is boss!!!!

"No one has to worry about those GOP polls. They are exclusively part of the GOP machine.
Any time Obama makes points for something big, they have to come so quick with well controlled polls in order to diminish the fact, to confuse people, and to create some panic in Obama's camp.
They did it just after a "very successful foreign trip".
They have been doing it after any major event involving Obama's campaign, including the pick of Joe Biden.
They will do it just after the Democratic Convention to mislead voters that it was a failure.
Any one has to bear it in mind that those polls will never be favorable to Obama, so we have just to forget and reject them. Obama was far behind in Iowa, but he won.
Those polls put him in a bad position before NC and Indiana primaries, but the results were favorable to him.
Their man Rudy Giuliani was widely leading the GOP polls in the primary, but he lost in ridiculous way when real voters came up.
In November, McCain will experience the Giuliani adventure. Real voters will give Obama a very landslide victory.
I would even suggest to those GOP/Poll companies to put McCain ahead of 10 points until November, as they were doing for their man Giuliani and leave us alone.
Meanwhile, the campaign would do its things, including reminding people no to pay attention to those misleading polls.
In this election, the campaign has to frequently remind people that we are not fighting only against McCain, but we are also fighting against the GOP/poll companies and the media."

HI All Remember When the 2008 Primaries where going; and Obama won Iowa? All of a sudden all the candidates started running as the "Change" candidate. So, McCain has already tried this ploy once before when Obama won Iowa. How ridiculous it is that the public is buying this marketing nonsense. Someone needs to find the video from the Iowa or New Hampshire primaries to see that MCCain has tried this before. Where are the people's memory: I believe that it is too difficult for people to "think" it is easier to be spoon fed? McCain is a candidate without an original idea. U. Tube has such great videos that are posted...how to get the best ones noticed? It is the wonderful Bloggers. I really think there is power in numbers; numbers,numbers,numbers,number s that may be the answer to winning this election. Use the power we have people remember NUMBERS.

The polls reminds us that we must also energize our base, and get new voters out to vote, there are 8 million Black Americans that are not register, and we must get them to register to vote. We must keep our focus on the economy and John McCain, and wait until the press stops falling all over themselves over Palin. Lets give McCain credit he found someone that could energize the republican base, we also have someone that can not only energize our base but the country also. We have to stay focus, and get our base out to vote, in order for us to win.

Boy are you right. Good advice. I hope they read your comments.

I am getting a bit worried about our response especially in light of this ridiculous Palin pick. We need to continue to hit hard. The reality is we were portrayed as "wimps" in 2004 and thats clearly not the case. McCain should be hit hard repeatedly. Headed out this Saturday to canvass in Southeast Pennsylvania which is GOP country. We are outnumbered 3-1.

Thanks, Anthony. A question, VERY URGENT, if you can help-- one of my friends who was instrumental in helping to assemble these ideas (and elicit them from my old friend), wants to help the Obama campaign, and he'll deliver the goods.

He's a genius, doctorate in psychology IIRC and a very frightening guy because he understands the human mind and memory psychology so well-- honestly, he can read minds, I'm not kidding! In any case, he's the one who will win any election for you, sell any product for a company-- his expertise is in the neurological principles of memory and how this translates into impressions and decision-making, and he's been able to apply it to everything from voting decisions to the success of amateur magicians! Music, images, messages-- he knows exactly how to formulate them and how to project them to strike the foundation of human memory and stay in there.

I'm not kidding when I say this: HE WILL WIN THE ELECTION FOR OBAMA, he knows how to impact decision-making that well.

He's from So Cal originally and AFAIK he still lives there though he travels a good bit. He'd like to help Obama, and he'll give you the winning gameplan-- basically what I wrote above, he put together a lot of that with my old operative friend and he'll add to that 1,000-fold, that's what he does.

How can he get involved in So Cal? He's busy as all get-out but just in a couple meetings with Obama Team Bigshots in So Cal, if that can be arranged, he will write the plan for victory in November! Solicitor, yes I'd definitely like to get involved, but the person who should be in HQ is "Mr. X"-- he's my friend from So Cal, a doctorate in psychology, and he's the one who basically came up with this plan. (He helped to elicit it and put it together with my old operative friend.) As I said above-- he knows the human mind and human memory so well, it's utterly frightening.

I'm not kidding-- Mr. X can read minds, there are some fundamental rules to "imprinting" in memory and he knows exactly how to tap them, he's almost like an alien intelligence. MR. X WILL WIN THE ELECTION FOR OBAMA, and yes, he'd like to contribute to headquarters!

Please, Email me as soon as you possibly can and tell me how I can get him in touch with HQ, or at least someone in the So Cal area who can put him through-- he's wickedly busy but he does want to help, and just a couple strategy sessions, he will provide the winning edge.

Hi Luanne, how can I get this to HQ? Seems as though there are only generic Emails here and it's hard to cut through all the commotion.

Another poster here suggested I get involved with HQ-- I'd love to, though the ideas I posted above are mainly the product of my friend "Mr. X," a doctorate in psychology who specializes in human mind and memory principles, and who puts them in practice. He can win the election for Obama-- what I have above is just the tip of the iceberg.

Thank you for your thoughts Rick. I agree with you 100%. I also think that Obama and his supporters should go on the offense about some of the ridiculous actions that the GOP has taken to gain strides. The McCain campaign has shown a new low, in my opinion. Let me be more specific:

1.0 They have used Hillary's prior videos and comments to turn Hillary supporters into McCain supporters and I assume, without her consent. My Goodness, is there any ethics or moral evaluation left for them to dismiss?

2.0 They have mocked, ridiculed and insulted the working class by making fun of community organizers and those who benefit from them. The entire RNC was focused on making fun of the service that Obama has selflessly provided, while ironically, a second theme for the RNC was "Service".

3.0 They have insulted every intelligent woman by implying that Sarah Palin could be the next Hillary Clinton. For Goodness' sake, there is NO comparison, whatsoever. What inspired millions of people, men and women, about Hillary, was above and beyond her gender. It was her intellect, strength of character and steadfast resolve to benefit those who are invisible to the government. Sarah Palin, on the other hand, has a steadfast resolve to stomp on anyone who gets in her way.

Dear Obama, the highroad only wins if you are facing an opposition that is playing by the same rules. The GOP is stopping at no ends to tarnish you, your supporters and all democrats including me. Lets go on the offense now...

yes. you need to donate. Since Barack reneged on his promise to accept public financing if his Republican opponent did, you need to donate. Barack needs to raise $100 million a month in September and October. Actually he needed to raise that in August as well and well, you know, fell well short.

Barack Obama's presidential campaign said it raised $10 million Thursday following the Republican National Convention speech by rival John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.

I don't understand after such a good campain for all these months, now Obama is loosing. Why there has not been any strong response since that palin event? You guys can not afford to loose, too many of us want this. Obama has to become our president or else we are all screwed up! I personally will move away to Canada or somewhere else if Obama doesn't win because I have no future in this place with Republicans in power and I think that this the case for many young people like me. Please come up with something, I don't what it is to back as ahard as y'all can

Senator Obama

From what I'm seeing on TV in Missouri tells me that McCain and Palin are winning. Their ads are persuasive.

You don't have to be negative. I don't want a pit bull or a barracuda as vice president even it they are pretty and wear lipstick. Under her lipstick she resembles Dick Chaney. This resemblance should be pointed out.

The republicans message wraps fear in the flag and sells it as home spun common sense. They try to scare people with terrorism and then transition to loving protective father and mother who will save us. That's not change. That's the same old, age old garbage. What they don't show is how war can be averted by intelligent assertive foreign policy years before crises evolve. Community organizers know this because they work to reduce violence so people can be creative in solving their everyday problems, not move from crisis to crisis.

MaCain used the work fight how many times? He and Palin want to fight. They seem to enjoy it. It gives them meaning. It energizes their base. They are a good choice for endless war. But there is a choice between fearful protection and intelligent, informed, creative foreign policy that realizes that the world is too small and fragile for endless war. All peoples do have a common enemy. It is a fear confused heart and mind.

Please articulate this.

When I think about the presidential race I am reminded of old Kung Fu flicks, a story of a two masters. Two masters, an elder, and the apprentice. Let’s say these two masters are going out on a journey of challenges and were given a chance to take one companion along to assist them, someone who could possibly complete it for them. One of them have chosen and apprentice and the other an elder.

The master, who chose the apprentice, has chosen someone with lesser years and even lesser knowledge which makes it a teacher-student relationship. It is unlikely that the teacher will ever agree with anything the student says and would rarely seek advice from the student because of the nature of the relationship, it’s antagonistic—and intimidating. By choosing the student the master reinforces his power position as master. The student is expected to be patient and learn from the teacher, but the student pushes because they are eager. It is likely the teacher will only consult the student after a decision is made and would do so as a test, to see how the student’s education is going; the student is beholden to the master. By choosing someone younger the master enhances his physical strength. He does not want someone of his years who may not be able to complete the journey. This master is John McCain. He has chosen to preserve the future of the Republican Party by choosing Sarah Palin; she is the fearless apprentice eager to carry the mantle of the republicans into the future. But in choosing her McCain weakens his position, neutralizing the main argument he used against Obama, it shows the arrogance of McCain, daring the country to challenge this choice. I just got to see it on late night reruns, and he ROCKED! He is so brilliant, especially on foreign policy. He's going to destroy Sarah Palin!
