When faced with impossible odds, generations of Americans have responded with a simple creed that sums up the spirit of a people:
Yes we can.
This campaign is about building a different kind of politics. We don't take money from Washington lobbyists or special-interest political action committees. Instead, our broad base of individual donors ensures that this campaign answers to no one but the people.

Loved that bit, and the twin cities, and the Harriet Tubman tribute and linking the strife of women and African Americans... have to give her a little cred too for the Suitpants -- glad to see her in Orange and not yellow too.
Cannot believe that I am happy to have seen her. feel like I am 12 again!

And it would be nice if Sen. Clinton told her surrogates like Carville, Bagala, and others to stop denigrating the campaign and the convention.
She can stop them from going on those shows and badmouthing Obama and the campaign. I hope she does that. To me, that's just as important as the speech.
You can't say one thing in a speech and allow your surrogates to go out and say the exact opposite to tv and radio pundits. That's my measure of the sincerity of the speech. I want to see if she will reel in the junkyard dogs.

Tyrone, I agree with you. I think that Carville is really a bitter person. I could not believe how he was literally dogging the first night of the convention. I could not watch MSNBC or CNN this morning. I have been watching C-Span.
In reality I really think they are just JEALOUS. If Hillary had won they would be in charge and they are NOT. She has to do more with her surrogates who will be on the morning shows.
Pat Buchanan, well he just equals hate. There is no difference between him and hate. He really makes me sick and to see that MSNBC is paying him all that money to knock down the dems.
Some of this reporting is NEITHER FAIR NOR BALANCED. IT IS JUST MESSED UP.

With James Carville, when you see him in the media I really don't think his motives are to help candiate A or candidate B or one part or the other...
This guy just really likes attention...likes to see himself on tv....That is why he is always doing cameos in movies, doing commercials for M&M's and all these companies....He likes attention..he has to stir up trouble to get it..
As far as his wife Mary Matalin helping publish that book, I don't really care...What was Hillary supposed to do..Tell Carville that if you want to work on my campaign you have to make your wife stop working as an aide to the GOP?...
It isn't too smart of the guy if he wants a future in the party... If McCain wants him as a surrogate I could care less...he won't help him...

Wow! Hillary - I hope this stops the "evil Clintons" talk.
She may have been drawn astray by political advisors (you can keep up the "evil Mark Penn" talk) but fundamentally she has not been driven by herself but by goals like universal health care, etc. I felt more sadness than anger by the ways her campaign went astray in the end of the primary, but thought it sad that a candidate with good motives was too focused on winning and forgetting what she was working for.
But her speech - WOW! She really came back to her true self here, I think.

Hillary is awesome now but in the primary she proved to be morally corrupt, manipulative, deceiptful and a loyalty only to the Clinton's not the Democratic Party or the country...If she had an even money way to get the nomination reversed at the convention (despite making the chances of a DEM victory much smaller) and she knew that would be her last chance to get the nomination and go for the Presidency she would do it in a heartbeat...that is the reality of it.....She has a track record of 35 years of being morally corrupt....maybe it is not fair that Bill got a free pass on this (which was more do to his charisma then being a male) but she hasn't/won't...
I am hoping for an All-Star cast in 2016 that includes..
RAHM EMANUEL
BRIAN SCHWEITZER
KATHLEEN SEBELIUS
JOE BIDEN (a possibility of course)
DEVAL PATRICK (a possibility)
TIM KAINE (sill have by then completed time in congress as you can only serve one term in VA)
MARK WARNER
HILLARY CLINTON (don't support her but she might run).
RUSS FEINGOLD
CLAIRE MCKASKILL
LATINO CANDIDATE NEEDED
ASIAN CANDIDATE NEEDED
GAY CANDIDATE (serious)
SEVERAL NEW PEOPLE THAT HAVEN'T STARTED YET.
I say Obama doesn't start out endorsing any of them, but sort of blanketely throws his support around the group of candidates that follows the pledge to campaign with the integrity and focus on building each other up and not tearing each other down style he adopted in the primary and to take the high road...
Push to have all these top candidates, even if they feel they are not likely to be in the top 2-3, or think they have a little better chance waitng four years, forget it...put the best the DEM paty has to offer all in the primary....and in the best wishes of the party have the candidates agree that the strongest person for VP spot will do it if chosen to strengthen the ticket.
In 2016 the goal would be when a winner is chosen, we have 95% of the dem party behind them solid and can focus on IND/REP votes eating into the GOP base...
Also over the next 8 years would be awesome if we could continue the registration drives and re-write the electoral map.
Hillary doesn't represent change. Sorry.
Thank you Hillary |

That being said, I DO think that she did what she had to do to get her supporters on board. And I KNOW that it could not have been easy for her.
I DO believe that we are NOW unified. I DO think she was very clear that we ALL need to remain engaged & support Obama.
I just don't think the content, the way it was written etc was so great.
But I 100% think she meant what she said & that she is on board with us.

I disagree, Lulu - this speech had all in it that was needed. The set-up with the personal stories, circling back to 'Did you do this for me, or...?' was masterfully done.
Given the personality of Senator Clinton, the subjects that needed to be covered and the sensitive transition that needed to be established, I don't really care about the technicalities of good speech-writing, and applaud the speech and its deliverance.
With that said, I still consider you one classy lady also, Lulu - so thanks for your sharing!

Sigh...you guys didn't read what I wrote carefully.
My POINT was that as far as speeches go I just didn't think it was a great SPEECH.
I think she SAID what she needed to. I made that clear.
But there are good speeches, there are GREAT speeches & then there are SPEECHES that go down in history.
I'm simply saying that it wasn't the speech to end all speeches.
That's all. I very clearly stated that she said what she needed to say & that in that sense it was good, AND that I apppreciated it & HER.
Maybe I was expecting fireworks. That's all.
Please understand that is all that I meant.

Hillary Clinton was fantastic and filled the convention with sincere hope and a forceful and sincere request that her supporters vote for Barack.
However, CNN Sucks!! They bitch and moan about getting the delegates fired up. So, after Hillary does JUST THAT, they interview a Hillary supporter who was so emotional and so unsure of whether or not she will even vote, she could hardly hold back the tears!! CNN, you SUCK big time!! Anderson tried to recover by asking that they locate that delegate after Biden and Barack speaks this week to see if she's decided to vote for Barack. Go Anderson!! Oh, and did I say, CNN, YOU SUCK!!!
Congratulations, Hillary, and thank you for giving what must have been the most difficult speech of your life! You done good, girlfriend!!

The Hillary Clinton you saw tonite and the treatment of Hillary by the media and the GOP the last month will not be consistent with what she will receive as Barack Obama's VP.
As she is no longer a candidate the media is not giving her any real scrutiny...the last thing McCain wants to do now is attack her as any hope for him winning rests on him winning over her disaffected supporters not mobilizing them behind Barack Obama by attacking her...She is also not facing the scrutiny of any candidate Obama or McCain as she isn't in the race....
The GOP would have the ability to destroy her...Obama really gave her a free pass, once they destroy her and the ticket she and Obama have to make this very negative..then we see the angry Hillary on attack...
Look how fractured her campaign was for day one...merging that with the Obama campaign would be a disaster, there would be so much headaches...
Look it is the job of both Obama (as Dem Nominee) and Hillary (as former candiate) to help bring together the Democratic Party, bring Hillary's supporters behind Obama....as long as we can unite the Democratic Party, get 90+% of the DEM support going (or projected to go) to Obama then we really don't need Hillary...... The IND/REP voters would be turned off by her....
Essentially you would be trading away an IND or REP vote for each DEM vote you gain, you would gain no REP votes as she got few unless you count the Limbaugh Operation chaos people...
The goal of the convention is to bring together the dem party, if we can do that, with Hillary's help than we can both gain support from new dem supporters and be able to target Independents and Republicans you can't with Hillary...
Joe Biden is awesome...Hillary is not consistent with Obama's message of change and after the GOP is done with her it would fracture the message of the ticket..I think even some Hillary supporters will leave when they really hear what the GOP will be saying...
All I care is at the end of the convention and in the weeks after we unite the Democratic Party...these are supportes that will stay with Obama as they have loyalty to the party as they are members...Then go after the IND/REP voters...
We will still have Hillary campaigning during the GE.

I don't want to seem out of line but there will be even more scnadals with her...a week after the GE she is on trial in LA...Whether she wins or looses information (video footage) implicating her will be all over youtube and the trial will be public..
I don't want Obama to lose credibility on representing change to cover for Hillary then go down with her, or not cover for her and be taken down by her supporters...

You don't know if selecting Biden is a misstep. Biden brings in the working class voters, Jewish, Catholics, and he has a great understanding of the mechanics of how Washington works.
There are pros and cons of selecting Hillary for VP.
The pros are what we saw during her speeches, the name familiarity. Occasionally I have wished that she had been the VP candidate, but all things considered she may not have been the best choice.
The cons are-
1)personality conflicts are never good for a joint ticket. Don't blame Obama's ego. The Clintons have too much ego- you cannot ignore that. The way Bill was whining and not giving Obama any credit after Obama won the nomination did not help things. The things she did/said during the campaign cannot be easily forgotten. Put yourself in Obama's shoes.
In addition to all that, Hillary did not want to send Obama her vetting info unless he guaranteed her the VP spot. That kind of promise would have been very unfair to the other candidates being considered (those who had sent the papers).
2)the Clintons have a lot of baggage that could be exploited by the repugs. It hurt Al Gore to be associated with Bill Clinton in 2000. It would have hurt Obama too.
3)There are people that absolutely do not want the Clintons anywhere near the WH. So Obama could have lost many votes from that group, while he would have lost some from the likes of PUMA. It would not have balanced each other out, so there was no advantage from the numbers perspective.
Ultimately Obama has the best understanding of who would be the right running mate for him. Biden has the foreign policy experience (Hillary cannot hold a candle to him in that department). Hillary has the charm and the name recognition, but that alone would not have pulled off the election for Obama.

Tonight's speech was written by Lissa Muscatine, Jim Kennedy and chief speechwriter Jon Lovett, working closely with long-time Clinton advisors Maggie Williams and Cheryl Mills.

Just like she said about Sen. Obama, all she has is this speech.
I am sorry Hillary is not on our side in this fight. That is the truth. This is good cop vs. bad cop. She is putting on a good face, and allowing her "surrogates" to run a muck in this election. If Sen. Obama loses, she is hoping we will all forget this year and rally around her because she was the "good cop".

No. I really think she did mean it. There may still be some nut jobs out there, but I don't think they are actually connected to her.
She is a leader in Democratic politics, and wouldn't trash all that for one singular bitter moment. I think she now realizes how harmful she was to the democratic campaign for change, and will do all she can to see John McCain defeated.
She has good examples such as Ted Kennedy, in how to move forward.

Let us face it. We will not get 100 percent of the Democratic vote whether the person is white, black, asian, or any other race.
Let us not get bent out of shape because of a few voters. One of the things CNN and others do not report is the number of Republicans who have openly come out to support Senator Obama.
We know by now that CNN for whatever reason do not like Senator Obama which is shown through the people they put on the show. They put people like Carville whose wife is a Republican that has supported the smears of Senator Obama.
I am looking forward to November 5, 2008 when they have to report that in spite of CNN and Fox News bias reporting Senator Obama has been elected as the next PRESIDENT OF UNITED STATES.

Lulu,
Pat is trying to create doubt about Party Unity. You have to remember that Pat ran for his party's presidential nominee twice and lost badly.
If Pat and Joe Scarbough was that smart, they would be President. I really believe that Pat and Joe are jealous of Senator Obama because he has achieved something neither of them will ever achieve and if he becomes President, Pat and Joe know that they never will be President. Pat and Joe has that mentality that a Black person should not get more than them.

Hi Obama Family!
We are having a WONDERFUL Convention!!
The DNC is doing a GREAT Job by showing us a classy and graceful convention!
I am really happy that the delegates are talking about the dangers of John McCain. Remember the media is NOT going to do it so Barack's Campaign and our fellow Democrats will have to.
I thought that Hillary's Speech was pretty good.
Michelle is so lovely. I admire her so much.
The Montana Governor had me Rolling with Excitement! I really enjoyed him.
C-SPAN continues to give SUPERB coverage! I am glad we have C-SPAN to watch so we can avoid the other garbage networks.
I am really Fired Up about Thursday! Barack will give a CLASSIC Speech!
Please continue to pray for GOD's protection over this GIFTED man, protect him and his lovely family.

I thought she gave a great speech and has a great future in the Democratic Party and U.S. government. I hope she is looking into her heart of hearts and not trying to just 'walk the line' to make Democrats happy at the same time as she hopes they lose to McCain. Did she convince us all that it is about we and not me? I am not sure.

Two things Hillary Clinton could say and do at the Convention (and thereafter) to get her supporters to back Barack Obama

There is no doubt Hillary Clinton has been highly ambiguous in her support (or lack thereof) of Barack Obama since finally giving up her bid for the presidency of the United States of America back in June (Well, she did not actually give it up; she suspended her campaign). Because of this ambiguity, which never translated into a true acknowledgment of defeat, nor into a true expression of closure, Hillary Clinton has, directly or indirectly, contributed to the fueling of the rampant speculations that have presented the Democratic Party as highly divided going into the August 25 Convention in Denver.
But now that the Convention is on, there is need for more clarity, and there are only two things that Hillary Clinton needs to say, and do, in order to put her supporters squarely behind Barack Obama...

Tax Increases Only for Wealthy Americans? |

By

Aug 27th 2008 at 12:18 am EDT (Updated Aug 27th 2008 at 12:18 am EDT)
I am troubled re Obama's proposal on tax increases. I make $250k a year, and so does Obama and everyone in Washington. Unlike them, I pay social security. My parents were blue-collar workers and it took everything they had to help pay for my education. My dad made less than $100 a week when I was growing up. I am a mom and my husband has MS. I am the sole bread winner. Although I am wealthy per Obama's plan, my husband's treatments are $5k a month (over $60k a year), pay for day care, have student loan debt, I help support my parents, and I work 70 hours a week for that inflated salary. I am trying to save everything I have to work less some day and spend more time with my family. I work for an someone else, so there are not many loop holes for me as there are for some of my self-employed friends - my tax burden and social security burden are huge. Not much creative accounting there. I don't understand why those of us that are making a good salary should be penalized like this. I am subject to lose my job at any time. I am holding my breath like everyone else. I am not wealthy. My circumstances put me in a different situation. I save more money than other people. I work a whole lot more than many people. I tithe 10% of my income. I provide about 200 hours of pro bono legal services a year. But in Obama's tax plan, none of that matters - I am a sitting duck as another employed joe blow. What is the incentive for me to stay at this job and make this salary to save for a different life? I feel that I am being penalized for getting ahead and working hard. I didn't have any more opportunity than others except perhaps parents that loved me. It should matter how your money is earned (i.e., through salary, investments, self-employment) and the adjusted gross income calculation should deduct out all health care expenses or have major adjustments for health care, day care and that kind of thing even for someone making over $250k. Earning $250k from an employer and living in a large city with higher cost of living definitley doesn't make you wealthy. Apparently it makes you stupid...

To start, I assume what you posted was true. If that is the case, then envision alot of income tax deductions available for someone in your position. (looking after everybody in their family, young and old). I live in Canada, and we get income tax deductions for those in our families we take care of.

As my family only brings home about 17K/year I cannot empathize with the blogger above, but we have felt this vice tighten and tighten for the past eight years and we can no longer breathe. At least enough money is made to deal with the costs of health care, parents, daycare, etc.
I can say that under an Obama Administration that the government will help your parents more giving you more free time and money, your insurance premiums will most likely decrease, and early childhood education will be expanded as will the focus on American education as a whole. Maybe these savings will counterbalance the tax increase that you face. You would also not need to worry about the little one you take to daycare being drafted to fight in one of the many wars our opposition believes need starting or the war that they want to rage for 100 years.
It sure seems like the situation above could be filed as uncommon (I could be wrong, not an expert), and not to say that it SHOULD be filed away; quite the contrary. If I were the blogger above I would write to Senator Obama and the Governor of CO explaining my situation.

You should be able to take advantage of a lot of deductions. When we lower inflation then you will have more spending power. That's the myth of tax decreases by Republicans. They decrease taxes, but all your other expenses increase. It's a hoax by the Republicans. Don't fall for it!

You making $250,000 as a lawyer in Colorado? Not likely.
Colorado Major cities: Denver and CO Springs both low cost cities.
If you bought a vitural house in Denver or CO Springs at 600,000. And paid your imaginary doctors. Plus, daycare, as if this were real? Your adjusted gross income would be under the $169,000 that Sen. Obama plans considers "well off."
Clearly not a tax lawyer... No way, No how.

We will know a little better tomorrow night. The Clintons are kind of between the devil and the deep blue sea. They are power people who are finding it difficult to give up their control and to save WJC's legacy at the same time as supporting the Party and its choice....which is why they walk this fine line now. I believe that their personal ambitions come first.
They know very well that their every word will be parsed and bi-sected and di-sected. So they just continue this balancing act.

I personally find it hard to believe that the Clintons are worried about $30 million. Bill can make that in a heartbeat, and Hillary will be able to match it when she retires and goes on the speaking for bucks tour. Or either of them can write another book. Actually I bet there is a sprint to the publishers among who in the Democratic Party will be writing the next 'tell all' or biography or whatever.....including lots of Obama people. They all win no matter what. The question is, do we (if McSame wins the election).

Because it's a moving target.
A) Need to change the McCain law because even McSideKick ignores it. This would allow HRC to use raised general election money to pay off primary debts or have a longer time to retire the debt. Then, it could be a wash.
Note: Pending lawsuit may force a law change that would help HRC.

"Democracy"
It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.
It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
Sail on, sail on ...
I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
.....
.. Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Even though the McCain family is much richer than the Obama family, the truth is that both families are much wealthier than most of the population. It seems to me that most American politicians are rich.
That is why the phrase 'out of touch' is so key. I believe the Obamas are closer in their background to most Americans. **smile** they have had less time and less money to get out of touch. John McCain keeps talking about his prisoner of war experience, where he 'didnt have a table'. The truth is that being a victim of torture, or a prisoner of war, does not qualify you for being POTUS. I wish people would think LOGIC. Mathematicians, where are you in this mix?

Just viewed the video, and yes I like it. Wouldnt it be wonderful if Bill's energy, experience and intelligence could be directed toward the many instead of himself and his legacy which of course includes his wife and daughter. I am a Canadian who is fascinated by U.S. politics. I wonder if Bill and Hillary really understand how and why they should put their egos aside for the sake of not only the United States, but the world. Bill, Hillary, and Barack are all great speakers. All 3 have great charisma. But the 2 against one game is lost. I for one would have much greater respect for the Clintons if they would unambiguously support and campaign for Barack Obama, especially Barack's ability to be Commander in Chief and leader of the world (all of the world, not just the free world).

A John Hay @ Telling Thoughts.com Convention Note
The Man from Montana / Ropes McCain!
Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana ambled across to the podium as the penultimate speaker before Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National convention on Tuesday and began his talk in a fairly shy manner. At first he looked a little unsure and the audience didn’t get too excited. Neither did I. Casually turned out complete with his distinctive western neck rig, he proved the point, that looks can often deceive.
After an unsteady start the Governor seemed to relax and his growing confidence became more evident. He realised that the more he reached out to the crowd, the more he gesticulated, the more they responded, and as a result the more interesting he became. It wasn’t too long before he had their full attention. And mine.
He covered a range of important issues and hammered his points home passionately, especially the need for clean green energy and greater investment in American manufacturing. He attacked John McCain on a number of points repeatedly, and vigorously, even tabulating and quoting McCain’s anti green energy voting record in the Senate.
The thing that was outstanding about this Governor’s address, the thing that was so appealing, was its spontaneity, his enthusiasm and his robust animation. He lit up the crowd. They were electrified and swept away.
The convention had caught fire at last. Bill Clinton had a grin 5 feet wide and was blown away, so was Joe Biden and and every other VIP. There was no lip service here. Everyone was rapt, on their feet and having a ball. They couldn’t help themselves.
The rancher from the mid-west had taken over. He was in charge. He was the head honcho, he was the star, and the entire convention was dancing to the man from Montana’s calls.
It seemed that the shy man who had arrived at the podium only 20 minutes earlier had morphed into the conductor of a great orchestra. For him, life down on the ranch will never be the same again. Good on you Brian.
For me, this is when the Convention achieved Lift Off. Go The Man from Montana!
Go Obama - Yes we can
