Hello fellow bloggers,
I had previously said that I would no longer go for firsts since the day of Barack's presumptive nomination during which I recorded at least eighteen. But I have a message for you tonight, so I will be trying to claim this spot.
My message to you all is that we remain civil to all other people. There is no reason in my mind for us not to treat others with respect at all times despite who they are or what they have said. We may disagree. There will even be people who are disrespectful and hateful on purpose but we must not sink to their level. First of all, when we are blogging, we need to conduct ourselves in a civil manner. This would include being respectful to all those who post on this blog or on other blogs. If someone tries to push your buttons, you must resist. I urge you to remain principled. Specifically, I think that the Mc(insert word here) business is immature and/or childish. There are better ways to point out that John McCain has many times contradicted himself. Also, yes, John McCain is 71 years old and would be 72 on the day he is inaugurated should he win the election. Yes, I do think that age affects the way a person does his or her job. But that being said, we must be respectful when we point out that we think his age is an issue.
So in conclusion, I am asking everyone here to make the effort to turn the other cheek. We must act the way we want the other side to act.
Good luck out there. Be the change. Even if you don't seek to be principled, you can take the logical approach: your argument will be less effective when you act in a disrespectful manner.

I kinda agree with you Zach. Today, especially, it seems like things got a bit out of hand. The worst thing, from what I've noticed, that you can do is to call someone out on the blogs. If the person isn't a 100% obvious, all out troll "Osama and Obama are brothers" --or something like that (you know what I mean), simply send them a message instead with your concerns!!!

Well, I'm good friends with both of the folks that it went on through, so I'm not going to re-tell the story (don't want to be 1-sided, and don't want to embarrass either of them). Basically, they just ripped on each other in public for different reasons. Nothing that's super-abnormal anymore.

In line with Zach's comments, this is why I've been staying off the blog lately. Seems as though the negativity, etc. have increased. This could be due to lots of leftover energy after the long and stressful primary.

Zach: Thanks so much. I don't want to hear candidates names twisted anymore. This is juvinile -- worthy of 5th grade bullies. We don't take kindly to Obama being called Osama, so why should we call McCain, McLame or any other silly nonsense.
Let's talk like adults.
As far as forgoing the public campaign finance money. I thought that was a done deal a long time ago. Apparently not.
Well, it is pragmatic, and Obama must fight the 527 Swift Boaters. As McCain's polls fall, the GOP smear campaign will escalate.
Plus, it will take mucho dinero just to really introduce Obama's bio to the country (not everyone blogs or even watches the news). So let's spend the big bucks on ads during the Olympics. Let's spread Obama's family values far and wide, not just depend on the new media. Let's have so many of those bio ads that we get sick of seeing a new one on the blogs.
The idea is to win. We must win. We must fight with everything we have (within the bounds of ethics). We can not be like poor Al Gore and not challenge and demand a recount. Every step of the way will be a fight.
Think of civil rights (1955 to 1968). Did MLK ever back down? Was he smart, use excellent strategists (Jim Bevel)? He was not just in the right, but he also kept his "eyes on the prize" with focus and strategy.

Good evening all!! I hope no one minds my ranting right now; however, I just heard yet ANOTHER false reporting about Michelle Obama and the "proud" comment!! Does ANYONE in the news get it right?
Here is what Michelle Obama said, in FULL context. She opened with, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country." She never said "American" --that's another lie from the smear machine; the media has mis-reported it also, and not just Fox News!! Shame on these other stations, too. However, this link should shut the "Neo Con Nut Job Smear Machine up" --but it won't; there isn't enough duct tape in the world to shut the members of this club up!
Link
"Other" stations, in addition to Fox News, have mis-reported this from DAY ONE; I find it disgraceful; and I found it "disgraceful" when I was supporting Hillary Clinton during the primaries. I’ve had to go online and research things after the news has reported during this campaign; they’re so caught up with “being first to report”, or spinning and bias, that even stations that would ordinarily do better, haven’t. It’s why so many people are confused at what Michelle Obama really did say; her speech was actually “touching” in my opinion. She appears to have been really speaking from her heart; I both appreciate and admire that. This mis-reporting is just one more example of why I've been so sickened with the media coverage during this campaign.
Thank you for allowing me this outlet to rant!

If we don't like what's on the news, and I am often dumbfounded by it, let's make some news! Positive news, about our candidate in our communities. The General Election is on now. I've been sending out links from "Issues"/above. This is why when I speak to someone who is worried about putting their kids through college I can answer them with Barack's policies. It's INTO ACTION! No media outlet can out shout the actions of millions!

Debra: If Obama pulls far ahead, the news will try to lift McCain up. It is not because they like McCain. It is because they want this to be a photo-finish horse race, and keep everyone tuned in (ad revenue up). That is how they keep their jobs.
We keep attributing their choice of stories from our assumptions of political commitment. They are not politically committed (except for Ann and Rush and a few wing-nuts). They are committed to paying their mortgage and paying their kids' college tuition, and are mostly cynical on politics.
They know that people can quickly tune out the news and go back to sports and reality TV.

A simply brilliant post, Zach. I would like to add one thing; I hope you don't mind. I've been disappointed during this campaign when Sen. Obama lost a primary, the first words out of so many people's mouths, were "they're racists." As someone who is new here and was a Hillary Clinton supporter but am now a PROUD Sen. Obama supporter, I was very offended at the "racist" label. Ironically, during this campaign, my 22-year old daughter was dating a man who is half Hispanic and half African American. I was called a "racist" more times than I can count. It's very insulting and very, very hurtful to be called, or labeled, a racist simply because the candidate someone supports is white.
It also gives the impression that supporters of other candidates in the primary were also stupid, and that they only supported Clinton or Edwards, etc., because they are racists. So I would like to offer a piece of advice, please refrain from labeling people racists because we have not yet won them over; trust me, NO person that supported Hillary Clinton based on issues and policy would EVER vote for McCain. Many liked Hillary Clinton; that does not mean they didn't, or don't, like Sen. Obama; I always have.
I hope I haven't offended anyone; however, being labeled a racist, with no proof other than someone likes another candidate who just happens to be white, is not only hurtful, it is wrong in my opinion; it's also a very, very big turnoff.
Thank you for your welcome, again!

I totally agree! Notice that Barack never uses this term, including when the media is trying to goad him into it. Notice that he called Geraldine F's comment "silly" or "foolish" -- can't remember the exact word, but something like that, in response to a question trying to get him to label it racist.
I've been active in promoting diversity on my campus, and I also have been called a racist. People use it as an insult to try and shut you up. Does not promote dialogue and understanding.
Barack promotes the importance of disagreeing without being disagreeable. I have been trying hard to follow his example, with occasional lapses.... I will likely sin again but want to thank all on the blog who are calling out for us to be our best.

I think part of the blame lands squarely on the shoulders of the media.
Did you happen to notice just how much Chris Matthews, among others, stressed the fact that the people who voted for Hillary...said that "race" was an issue, were over 45 years old, and also did not go to college. These types of comments was constant during the primary contests.
Unfortunate, as it is, the media DOES shape the views of the public...and with all the slicing and dicing going on, I'm not surprised that some fell into the media trap.
Frankly, the media has been the biggest disappointment during this election cycle. It's a sad day, when you can't even trust what the "so called" professionals on TV are reporting. It's going to be up to us to hold the media accountable.

They did not report that Obama got something like 65% of the female Hillary vote within the first week. I had to go on the internet to find that information. It was just an attempt to keep the struggle going.
Thanks for welcoming me here.

It concerned me when I read that Senator Obama's list of VP candidates included John Murtha. Two groups PMA and CTC benefited significantly from Murtha's earmarks. Of course, both groups were large campaign contributors. Also, Murtha threatens other members of congress when they don't support him. And let's not forget the ABSCAM scandal.
Personally, I like Jim Webb.
P.S. - If I hear one more news station talk about flag pins, I am going to scream! Or, about Mrs. Obama's statement about being proud of her country. I want to hear about important topics. Also, I figure the flag pin is probably imported from China!

I said something similar, although far less eloquently, at the end of the previous thread, and was glad to see this at the start of a new blog. Thank you for reminding us all that we must keep to a higher standard than those who come to annoy us. Admittedly, that can be hard to do at times, but we are not just in this to win, but to truly change the way political campaigns are conducted.
One thing that many either don't realize or just forget is that the candidates don't feel the same rancor towards one another that some of their supporters express, but can conduct themselves civilly when they come together. We can do the same, with a little effort. It would show others that we really mean what we say and it might even shame one or two into behaving decently themselves.
I hope everyone reads and ponders your words, then takes them to heart. This is going to be a very hard campaign and there will be some frustrating times, but we simply have to ride those through, channeling our energies into doing something productive for the campaign, rather than giving in to our feel good, even if sometimes righteous, anger.
Come on folks. We have an election to win, not points to score.

Zach, you are so right. Thank you for the advice. I've not been too involved in politics before because it seemed like whatever was planned to be done was done anyhow; in other words, they'll do whatever they want to do in politics.
But, when I heard Senator Obama speak for the very first time, it was reminiscent of the days of good hope feelings and desires for change during the Kennedy years. I was two years old in 1960, but my whole family was Democratic to the bone.
Somehow through Senator Obama, those feelings and desires of true hope and change are re-ignited in the hearts and minds of many in our country.
Despite the odds, I work at and will continually plan to be dignified and classy when angry people voice their words about the Obamas. I will NOT be mortified or moved by negativity.
Yes it's hard to be civil and calm amongst the slings and slurs and barbs and just painful comments spewing from others who don't support our Senator, but ongoing civility and calm is what's needed.
I always remember the Aesop Fable about the Tortoise and the Hare. And the Tortoise won. Stay calm :D

Is anyone else disappointed with Obama for breaking his pledge? I know it's to his advantage to forgo public financing, but he made a commitment -- a very public, quite emphatic commitment. Now he's breaking it. It's sad to see him act as any other politician would. I watched the video, and I was so disappointed. For the first time, I felt as if he was just another politician, just another guy who makes a cynical decision, then tries to justify it. That's part of what is so maddening about the Bush/Rove crew. Obama must be different.

Hi CMA --
I'm not disappointed because I believe that he never pledged to accept public financing. What he said several times (during debates) was that he pledged to meet with the Republican candidate to see if they could come to a consensus on the financing of their campaigns using public financing while limiting the impact of the PACs and 527's. Obama's attorneys met with McCains, but did not get the agreements from McCain's side that they wanted. Had Senator Obama accepted public financing, he would have been badly disadvantaged.
One of McCain's 527 has already pledged to spend up to $250 million on McCain's behalf. Also, the $83 million available to each candidate through public financing would not have been enough to wage the 50 state strategy.
I believe it was an excellent decision.

You are correct, Obamanever said "committed" and has always noted that he wouldn't involve Loby Groups etc. in the campaign. Grassroots donations are the public's way of supporting the campaign. He made the right decision, the press and others may spin it differently but that is politics per usual. One thing certain, Senator Barack Obama does not represent the "usual"! But, he wrote in a stipulation that the yes answer was based on a deal being reached with the presumptive republican nominee to control the activities and messages of the 527's. Notice specifically the words "I will pursue an agreement", that means that the yes was not unconditional. Obama has done that on the Democratic side, McCain is either too weak, lacks the ethics, or just flat-out encourages the republican 527's.
"In a November 2007 questionnaire, Obama answered "yes" when asked: "If you are nominated for president in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?" He added: "I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election."
- Excerpt from Associated Press
Here's a couple of quotes that emphasize McCain's dis-interest in eliminating the 527 smears and Obama's willingness to do just the opposite. Many more can be found with a simple google search.
Progressive Media USA, the group organized to be the main soft-money advertising vehicle for Democrats in the fall, will dramatically scale back its efforts in deference to the wishes of the party's presumptive nominee. From
Link
In addition to funding his general election campaign through private money sources, the McCain campaign also expects to benefit from the expenditures of 527 groups. Despite condemning 527 ads in 2004, McCain has made clear that he expects that 527s will attack Senator Obama and that he is not willing to referee them. “’I Can’t Be a Referee’: Drops 2004 crusade against ‘527’ attack ads.” Boston Herald (June 12, 2008).
I believe that I've seen you post this comment about being disappointed several times now over the last day. If you believe the media without researching the entire story, you're going to be disappointed many times this election season. Most of the media would rather create a story than report on facts since the true information typically won't sell as many stories. Hopefully this answers your concerns, if not post again and we'll see what else we can do to alleviate them.

I'm glad you said this, I've been thinking the same thing for some time. I would even add that even if within the "family" we disagree or have a question about something Senator Obama has said or done that it's ok and that we shouldn't jump on each other. I've seen a few comments along the lines of "just trust him" or "don't question him". I don't think that Obama is someone who would WANT his supporters to not question him, it's not the kind of leader he is. The reason I believe in him is his ability to see nuance, to respect alternative viewpoints and treat big issues as complex. This is why he is refreshing and why he is progressive and I think is the reason he is winning over so many Republicans and Independents. I think if we allowed some respectful discussion and disagreement (ala Michelle's point with Elizabeth on the View) we might help win over undecideds who are reading these posts. But if they are not sure if they agree with everything Senator Obama says, but rather just respect who he is as a person, and then come here and see a lot of "don't question him" then they might be turned off. Just my two cents. I just try to remember whenever I'm here that I'm representing Senator Obama and I want to be an asset to him and his campaign, not a hindrance.

Hmm - ok - patience I'm brand new to blogging - have no idea what I'm doing. Took me three times to get registered. But I have a question on the financing that is really bugging me. Yesterday I found the FEC.com website listing all contributions for the candidates. I found it very interesting, especially if you take the names of the donors and then start running searches on the diversification of businesses, name changes, owners, etc. on who is actually giving the money. Did you know Haliburton is now in the laundry and nursing home business under various DBAs, talk about diversification?
I read the contribution rules and no one seems to be following them. So I'm confused as to how an individual can say they will match $250 million in funds if they are only allowed to give $2,300 per campaign. So max would be $4,600 per individual for each. But you see people listed giving several times that amount.
Also, why would the Service Employees International Union give money to both campaigns (they aren't alone by the way) when their website clearly shows they support Obama over McCain. Then there is the PAC money, Obama may not realize it but his campaign people have been accepting PAC funds from the Life and Liberty PAC INC and from the Michigan Education Associate (MEA PAC)group here in MI - I know I give to this. Are they a different type of Political Action Group and lobyist - then say the insurance or drug industries? Is it certain PACs he's not accepting money from. It just boggles my mind why so much money is laid out to get a job that pays about $400,000 a year. Wouldn't it be better to give each candidate so much alloted advertising time in the media, equal campaign flyers, etc. and stop spending so much money that could be used to educate our children, give medical attention to those that need it, and money for in home care of the elderly?

Well stated, Zach. There are folks who come here to "browse". They check out our group and make decisions based on the form and substance of our discussions. If we want to attract people to our movement it's up to us to represent the principles this movement is founded on.
Trash-talk on the HQ blogs is counter productive. I've never heard Barack attack any opponent's character, family, religion, or private life. Obama is a man of integrity. He's a role model for our nation. Let's follow his lead.
What to do when we feel negative? Of course it's vital to express ourselves. I suggest we write personal blog posts and invite folks to read our latest "rant". In making it a matter of choice, those who are so disposed can join in the venting. Those who don't choose to get involved aren't confronted with our negative thoughts.
To me, this is a win-win situation. We have the opportunity to vent freely and openly without compromising the integrity of our public blogs.
Whatcha think?
Morning cookies are ready. Enjoy!

I want to support the thread Zach started about being civil. The more strongly people feel the more likely they are to think people who disagree are stupid, corrupt, crazy, or bigoted (pick an adjective). This alienates people, blinds us to the possibility that there is SOME truth to the policies they support, and deprives us of an opportunity to find a compromise that works for everyone.
Name calling is particularly ineffective. How many of you would take an argument that started by calling Senator Obama, Nobama (as so many anti Obama posts on the internet do)seriously?

Zach, thank you for your thoughtful post.
I offen am alarmed and saddened to find the disrespectful and curt dismissiveness shown to others on our OB blogs. I scoot right past these outbursts, but find that I am less comfortable here than I use to be. I don't post often and am not able to visit often, but I love this Obama community. Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of folks who post here are uplifting OB family bloggers who cheer us up, share valuable resourses, pass on worthy information, and engage in intelligent dialogue. To those who raise up up .... thank you! Let's be kind to one another... long ago a wise person once said.... Love your enemies!

How absolutely excellent. This blog is a place where we can learn new behavior. We can strive to make changes in ourselves...we can be better. If we don't, then how can we say "yes we can" and really mean it.
I want us...the Obama-Nation...to present ourselves with the ultimate in character. I am suggesting that it is not enough to be polite to someone, we must be kind because that is who we are. It should be effortless. I would like kindness, and fairness to be part of our DNA. For those of you who agree, please respond. I think it would be splendid to develop an ongoing online etiquette experience for us. Okay Obamaians...what do you say?

Yes; none of us can be complacent; I remember when Dukakis held a 17-point lead over Bush Sr. and lost; I was sick for two weeks! Many people accused Michael Dukakis of complacency; I have to admit I was one; however, I was also in my early twenties and foolishly “believed” what the media reported. Then, I watched an interview with him –just a few short years ago. He stated, "I did campaign and campaigned my heart out; what I never expected or could even imagine was how despicable and low the Bush campaign would be and go. I never imagined anyone could be that contemptible."
How true! I learned a lot from the 1988 Dukakis campaign; it broke my heart but made me more determined than ever to fight back against these evil attacks!

This is one of my personal favorites when defending my Party loyalty and staunch support of Sen. Obama.
"A Day in the Life of Joe Republican"
Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.
All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.
Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in the dark)
He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.
He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, “We don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have”.

Here’s another one I use to defend my Party loyalty and support of Sen. Obama!
Written as speaking to George W. Bush (and could be McCain!)
Okay George W. Bush, I'll lay your incompetence and deplorable Administration out for you via the Iraq Invasion!! YOU told us that we were invading Iraq to destroy their weapons of mass destruction. Then YOU said those weapons probably don't exist. Apparently that didn't matter. Except that it does matter. I know in your "support the troops" mindset, we're not supposed to say that, as you then call us "unpatriotic."
But it's also called honesty, and dishonesty matters. 1.) It matters that the infrastructure of a foreign nation that couldn't defend itself against us has been destroyed on the grounds that it was a military threat to the world. 2.) It matters that it was destroyed by us under a new doctrine of "pre-emptive war" when there was apparently nothing worth pre-empting. 3.) It surely matters to the families here whose sons went to war to make the world safe from weapons of mass destruction and will never come home. 4.) It matters to families in the United States whose life support programs were ended, whose medical insurance ran out, whose day care programs were eliminated so we could spend the money on sending an army to do what did not need to be done. 5.) It matters to the Iraqi girl whose face was burned by a lamp that toppled over as a result of a U.S. bombing run. 6.) It matters to Ali, the young Iraqi boy who lost his family and both arms in a U.S. air attack. 7.) It matters to the people in Baghdad whose water supply is now fetid, whose electricity is gone, whose streets are unsafe, whose 158 government ministries' buildings and all their records have been destroyed, whose cultural heritage and social system has been looted and whose cities teem with anti-American protests. 8.) It matters that the people we say we "liberated" do not feel liberated in the midst of the lawlessness, destruction, civil war and wholesale social suffering that so-called liberation created. 9.) It matters to the United Nations whose integrity was impugned, whose authority was denied, whose inspection teams were overlooked in the process of technical evaluation and disarmament.

10.) It matters to the reputation of the United States in the eyes of the world, both now and for decades to come. 11.) And surely it matters to the integrity of this nation whether or not its intelligence gathering agencies have any real intelligence or not before we launch a military armada on its say-so. 12.) And it should matter whether or not our government is either incompetent (and YOU are) and didn't know what they were doing (but YOU did) or were dishonest and refused to say (this IS it!).
The unspoken truth is that either as a people we were misled or we were lied to, about the real reason for this war. Either we made a huge and unforgivable mistake; which I personally believe, as I believe you lied to us; or an arrogant or ignorant mistake, (thus your incompetence); or we are swaggering around the world like a blind giant, flailing in all directions while the rest of the world watches in horror or ridicule.
If Bill Clinton's definition of "is" matters, surely this matters. If a president's sex life matters, surely a president's use of global force against some of the weakest people in the world matters. If a president's word in a court of law about a private indiscretion matters, surely a president's word to the community of nations and the security of millions of people matters. And if not, why not? If not, surely there is something as wrong with us as citizens, as thinkers, as there must be with some facet of the government. If a war that the majority of Americans say is "wrong" but YOU deem them "right", what kind of national morality is that? Of what are we really capable as a nation if the considered judgment of politicians and people around the world means nothing to us as a people? What is the depth of the American soul if we can allow destruction to be done in our name and the name of "liberation" and YOU, at a point refused to give an accounting of its costs, both personal and public? We like to take comfort in the notion that people make a distinction between our government and ourselves.

We like to say that the people of the world love Americans, they simply mistrust our government. But excoriating a distant and anonymous "government" for wreaking rubble on a nation in pretence of good requires very little of either character or intelligence. What may count most, however, is that we ALMOST became the ones Proverbs warns when it reminds us: "Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value the one who speaks the truth." The point is clear: If the people speak and the KING doesn't listen, there is something wrong with the KING. If the KING acts precipitously and the people say nothing, something is wrong with the people. Americans have realized that in a country that prides itself on being democratic, we are our government. And the rest of the world is figuring that out very quickly - thanks to you George W. Bush!! From where I stand, that matters!!

McCain's being his usual "self" (don't want to get in trouble)!
What I LOVE is the unity here; James Carville is blasting McWAR and others, saying "these people don't know what's going on..." He's defending Obama and Carville ALWAYS wins; whether you like him or not, it's always great to have Carville on your side; and right now, he's doing Sen. Obama "well"! Carville is "eating these guys' lunch", it's wonderful to see Carville slamming these guys and defending Sen. Obama.

To say his heart was not in it is a little unfair. Carville is and old and dear friend of the CLinton family. He said that if she did not win he would back Obama and he was right there fighting for him.

You might not think his heart is in it but his mouth is and like him or not, he is one of the few the MSM will actually put on that can overtalk the republican pundits they face off against.
I notice that whom ever they have representing the more liberal side is usually fairly quiet and does not say much. The host usually lets the Repub interrupt and they do nothing to control them. Carville can be abrasive for some people's taste but he is important.

Jonathan Alter puts the smack down on Lars Larson in that clip. Dan Abrams is okay, but I find that he too often takes the wrong tack. With Larson, all he needs to say at some point is, "Sir, you're just completely and factually wrong. Michelle's own life and words have thoroughly proven you wrong. You have no case and no credibility. Good bye."

McCain doesn't look "normal" to me. He looks like a man who thinks he is still young and imagines himself attractive, instead of settling into his age with good grace.
Now Obama - well it always makes me laugh that white people (I am one but don't do this) spend hours and hours baking in the sun, risking skin cancer, all to obtain a nice, dark tan, yet some of these condemn a natural "tan". Most odd.

Right - I noticed that, too. Like I said, he's okay in getting the big picture pretty accurately--that the hypocrisy and disingenuous outrage from the right wing on this issue is deafening. But he could be making the point more clearly, powerfully, and succinctly without the insta-bickering format.

I posted this above; it seems more fitting here!

Repost...I made it over to the other thread a bit late :)
*********
I went outside the country for college, and came back with a profound appreciation of the opportunities our country affords us.
In America, unique au monde, the "American Dream" is still alive - it is the one place in the world where with hard work, thrift, determination, education, dedication, and ingenuity you can truly better yourself and your family. It may be hard - there may be many barriers and "glass ceilings" - but it can still be done. In other countries, even developed and prosperous ones, you are still limited by your social class, your family name, or any of a hundred other stratifying factors.
It is because of this that I decided I needed to give something back to my country, for all the opportunities it had given me, my family, and all other Americans. I decided to join the military as my way of giving back a few years to my country and I'm still on active duty.
America is by no means perfect but it is still the most incredible country in the world and I am dedicated to making it all it can be - one of the reasons I have volunteered, donated, and worked hard for this campaign.
We are the ones we have been waiting for!

You are right. And because of our commitment to educating everyone, we have the ability to participate fully as citizens. We have the ability to be sophisticated participants in self-government. Unfortunately, we have to be made very uncomfortable before collectively we will get off our apathetic bits and get involved, but we always carry within us a powerful "I can't stand it any more" initiative within in us, and the know how to respond.
The key is for those of us who are involved even when things are comfortable to stay engaged with those who ebb and flow, so that in times like this we can step up and clean up the mess that failed leadership causes.

I first voted when I was 18 and 2 months old, I voted for Ronald Regan. (BE NICE EVERYONE!)
Then I voted for Jesse Jackson in the primary while I was in college. And I guess I voted for Dukakis (spelling) in the November election 1988.
1992 I voted for Clinton, and went to the Chicago convention in 1996 (cuz my sister lives there I just mooched off my friends) and obviously voted for him again in 1996.
Switched parties to Republican when Clinton lied to his Lawyers and staffers about his girl-friend and intern. He violated two major taboos for me. Don't lie to your lawyers and staffers, and don't accept sexual gratification from those you supervise, and from those you are not married to.
Voted for GWB in 2000 (because Gore did not separate himself enough from the deception of Clinton. I was really, really, really, upset.)
Switched parties back to Democrat to vote for Brad Henry for Governor of Oklahoma.
Voted for Kerry in 2004.
Voted for Obama in primary.

Cast my first vote shortly after my 18th birthday, for a Labour candidate for a council seat (in UK) but by 21 had become active in the British Liberal Party, first at local level, then at parliamentary. Politics became my life, but when we moved over here all that had to go and, quite honestly, although I've campaigned minimally for the Dems over the last 14 years, I have never in my life been as excited about or motivated by a candidate as I am by Obama.

Tagging on with another question for Lace.
We have absolutely nothing Obama at our Dem headquarters and although we're not yet open daily, people are dropping by on the weekends looking for stuff. Our local Obama group has a good selection of buttons, etc. and both our local group and the Dem GOTV have tables weekly at an event but still, people are asking when they drop by our office. Are you still doing Obamacycle? How can we get gear for our Dem headquarters without waiting weeks?
BTW, we registered 6 voters in an hour and a half tonight and four were Republicans changing parties. Another four were registered at our Obama table, down the street from our GOTV booth.
Had a great convo with a Hillary supporter-turned-McCain-misinf ormed. Had her thinking after a good discussion on the ramifications of war and how Hillary's stance on women's rights is alligned with BO's. It was a lovely exchange. No bad blood, just information to share and she had done no research. Lots of people out there still believing the spin but we're getting the truth to them one by one.

At this point, Obamacycle is out of commission (you can always look for things, but good luck..) because the primary season is over. We're thinking about re-vamping the site for the GE, but we'd have to change a few things (including the overall purpose) in order for it to work. But, since the primary season is over, I think we'll loose a lot of the audience that we had, since fewer and fewer people will be inclined to give.
If you need things ASAP, you can always check with sites such as
Link
to buy unofficial, union-made gear (the same manufacturer of Obama's merchandise). But, Barack won't make anything off of it.

Chris Matthews tonight. He had a discussion with three panelists about Obama's announcement about rejecting taxpayer funding today and completely ignored any discussion about 527s. I don't expect him to jump and down cheering for Obama (although if he looked at the issues he should be) just tell both sides of the story.

Media could really help the public with this one by pointing out how much McCain has used in private money, clear up that whole borrowing money from a bank saying he would use public funding, and track down the 527 spending and its impact on elections, and by the way when discussing 527s remember to refer to them as resulting from the McCain Fiengold bill.

And of course... the critical other piece of this story: John McCain essentially broke federal campaign financing law during the primaries; the most generous thing you could say about it is that he totally gamed the system, swinging between public and private financing using very nefarious tactics and clearly violating rules.
The whole mock outrage is so glaringly disingenuous, of course. At least Olbermann covered all that tonight.
What Barack did today was great. His campaign IS a modern paradigm for genuine public financing.

The interesting part about this issue is that when people are polled they dont seem to care.
McCain of course didnt actually agree to this until Senator Obama had made his declaration.
What people do care about are the economy, getting out of Iraq etc etc etc.
Senator McCain is the old guard and the more he campaigns the more people see this

This whole public financing stuff confuses me, and if I wasn't into this campaign, I wouldn't even care. I couldn't tell you what other campaigns have done in history. I think the only one that mentioned that John McCain has been taking private money this whole time since he became the presumptive nominee is Keith Olbermann. Now all of the sudden, he is being "honorable" about this issue. You have to give it to him, he really knows how to get the press to stick up for him.

Wouldn't the "honorable" thing really be for McSame to take no money? I mean, Barack was the only person to check "Yes" AND add a lengthy comment explaining his position; the others didn't even check off yes OR no. So, since McSame did not say either way, shouldn't he just abide my his pledge to nothing by taking money from nobody? ;-)

He's defending Obama and Carville ALWAYS wins; whether you like him or not, it's always great to have Carville on your side; and right now, he's doing Sen. Obama "well"! I'll always be grateful to Carville; his pure genius during the 1992 presidential campaign saved us from another four years of George Herbert Walker Bush!
Perhaps if for no other reason (although I have always loved him—I know some don’t), perhaps those that don’t care for him can think of saving us from Bush Sr.? He really is a brilliant man; yes, he's rough around the edges at times; however, he's also revered and respected within the Democratic Party by many high-profile people. His defending Sen. Obama, and his supporting him, will help win over many, many former Hillary Clinton supporters.

It wasn't just Carville that helped Clinton win the White House in 1992. Although, the strategy for the General Election was totally left out of the Primary Colors movie, Ron Brown was the main strategist for the GE in 1992 where he started the Rapid Response to the Republicans and carried a flip chart with all of the Republicans' untruths. He also had a person dressed in a chicken suit running in behind Bush Sr. extolling all of his lies after every stump speech. I don't think people realize just how much Ron Brown did as DNC chairmen to get the Clintons elected.

All we can do is keep writing letters, making calls, signing checks, and replace those who continue to sell us out--including Speaker Pelosi. This is the time for the TRUE Dems to stand up and do what's right. My 4 year old just recently had his chicken pox vaccination and I've been stressed out and getting little sleep. When I was a kid, I had a very severe case of chicken pox, so I don't know yet if it's shingles. At first,I was thinking that I might have kidney stones or something. But within the last few days I've had headaches and chills with some nausea too.
I was able to sleep for a few hours b/c I had some super strong pain pills left after a root canal 2 months ago. Oh my this is bad. I'll be at my doctor's office first thing in the morning, I guess....

Ugh! They'll be no sleeping for me until the doctor knocks me out or something. I took a pain pill earlier and fell asleep, but now it hurts worse than it did just hours ago.

According to the CDC, 'yes, people with shingles are contagious to persons who have not had chickenpox. Therefore, people who have not had chickenpox can catch chickenpox if they have close contact with a person who has shingles.
However, you can not catch shingles itself from someone else. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus which has been dormant (staying quiet) in your body ever since you had chickenpox. So, you get shingles from your own chickenpox virus, not from someone else.'
In general, if you can keep all of the zoster lesions well covered, then the children won't have direct contact with them and shouldn't be at much risk. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that 'lesions that are covered appear to pose little risk to susceptible individuals.'

I had very SEVERE chicken pox when I was 8 or something.
I've had two kids and kidney stones twice and this pain is really coming close to kidney stones one or both of those levels. I woke my husband to tell him and he said, "It's probably just some bug bites or somthing.....(grumble, grumble). I told him, "Well, after I go to the doctor tomorrow, my next step will be to file for divorce...how 'bout that?" He said, "Okay".
Men, I tell ya...

Sherrie-Thanks for all your links that you have sent me to regarding my questions or dismay. I am an Obama supporter. but, being an old timer in politics-I am quick to question my politicians. Obama has been an incredible candidate and has won the hearts of many with his message of changing things as usual in Washington. I have noticed some changes in his speeches for the general election. I know politicians have to do this because it is how they win. But, Obama hiself set his standards high and that is why I question things if they sound different than what he said before. It is always smart to question candidates-even if you support them and want them to win-and I do.

Norcal, imho the people who question politicians tend to be older folks who have seen it all in their lifetimes. I completely concur that evolutions and flip flops need to be discussed. I dont have any problem in someone changing their position, but it depends on what and how much. It will be interesting to see how this energy policy debate unfolds. I wonder whether Obama will find it pragmatic to alter his position on drilling, as part of an entire policy position. The majority of the country by a large margin is now in favor of expanded drilling.

I agree with this, but I am inclined to think of it as an evolved decision on his part. McCain has been running a G.E. election the past 3 months using Primary money, he has gone on record saying that he is unable to stop the RNC and 527's from doing what they will, and he has rejected overtures to meet on the middle ground. Last Fall, Obama's response specifically said that he would accept a deal that could be worked out with him and the Republican Nominee and since this was not possible he made the wise strategic decision to be privately financed.

I totally agree with you. She is simply an amazing woman--an extraordinary person. I never watch the View, but I watched it for her. I thought she was the most interesting, most mature, most gracious, and most articulate person sitting at that table--just a class act all the way around.
It's pure Rovian playbook to attack people for their strengths, and really a sad testament to the worst aspects of American politics that someone like her becomes the target of ruthless attacks (for what we all know is utter BS) and that such attacks get overblown media attention and media echo-chamber forums.
Someday, hopefully, this too will change.

I was chatting it up with a life-long Republican couple at our GOTV booth tonight. They had already changed parties so they could vote for Obama. They were both 71 years old. The guy said, "Michelle is going to make a great First Lady."
Yeah, she is. But, wow. Just wow. I'm making friends with Republicans and we actually agree.

Not sure if this has been posted... but there was a poll done by a group based in Atlanta and it had Obama and Mccain essentially tied in GA. I know this may not have bene as reliable as the other big name polls..... but it is definitely encouraging. Could Obama win my home state? I will definitely do everything in my power to make sure that he's atleast competitive...
My favorite part of the article? That the McCain camp is thrilled Obama is spending money in a state they are confident they will win... really, McCain? You're just overjoyed? I think not

Cindy McCain. Not hard to have always been proud of your country when your daddy is a billionaire.
And the key word from Michelle Obama was "really" as in the "first time I've *really* been proud"
Great line from Yahoo News:
"McCain's a four-star flip-flopper," said Chris Kofinis, a Democratic operative who worked for John Edwards in the primary. "The John McCain of 2000 wouldn't vote for the John McCain of 2008."

Former Sens. John Edwards and Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, a congresswoman said Thursday, one day after she met with the team Obama has reviewing possible candidates......
"I asked them what type of person the senator is looking for? And they said in general someone who could help him rebuild the country ... talking about change. How we reinvest in America, get people back to work and reinforce our education system and bring the jobs back," she said.

Dont you think that an older experienced white guy is going to be the VP? I find it hard to believe that Gore would want the job. I thought Edwards said he didnt want it either (but who really believes that?) I think it is going to depend on where things are at in the polls closer to convention time. Then they can decide whether they need a state, a constituency, or foreign policy experience. It would be nice to have an all in one type but I dont think such a person exists. They are probably selecting a number of different people and then depending on the political situation in Aug. will choose which one can deliver in the area most wanting.

I got the impression some people were put on the list to make sure it was inclusive and people didn't focus on who wasn't on the list. Like Edwards and Clinton.
I laughed at the headlines about the VP, the list has been out for a while and its just now the media is grabbing a few names off of it and making a headline.
I think the big loser of this campaign is the media, they have really shown that they aren't out for America's best interest, but for their own bottom dollar line. I think this is the big difference between the media here and in other countries, in other countries the media feels it has a responsibility to report new fair and accurate and educate people, where here they just feel they have the right to make as much money as possible and entertain people.
The USA news has become reality television with reporters giving their opinions and interpretation of what they think is important.

An aide to Gov. Chet Culver said Thursday that Republican presidential candidate John McCain ignored the governor's request to cancel a campaign visit amid a massive flood recovery effort in the state.
Patrick Dillon, Culver's chief of staff, said the governor was concerned that McCain's trip would divert local law enforcement from the flood recovery effort to provide security for McCain.
David Roederer, who chairs McCain's campaign in Iowa, said McCain's trip didn't hamper Iowa's recovery operation. He said McCain proceeded with the visit because the campaign was providing much of its own security.
"There was really no state resources diverted," Roederer said....
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama canceled a scheduled visit to eastern Iowa last week at the request of state officials.
"As a courtesy — and as we did for Senator Obama — we privately made an effort to make sure that Senator McCain knew that state and local resources were still being deployed to support the flood fight and that now may not be the best time for a campaign trip," Dillon said in a statement.
Dillon's comments came as President Bush toured the state, and hundreds of law enforcement officers were diverted from flood recovery to provide security for him.

one can understand the “potency of the community” by considering the donor list as well as the near-million people who have signed up on Obama’s Facebook page and the 926,000 accounts registered (as of Tuesday afternoon) at my.barackobama.com....
“The thing that has blown me away is how these same people [who have donated] have also done all this volunteering and helped with the get-out-the-vote effort. And if you get into a governing mode, it’s unlimited how you could use this base,” said Tom O’Donnell, a Democratic consultant who served as chief of staff to then-House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt.
American Enterprise Institute scholar Norm Ornstein says that if Obama’s online moneymaking operation continues apace, it would free him in the White House from the endless procession of reelection campaign obligations, thereby allowing him greater time to spend pressing his agenda....
“From the beginning,” said Steve Hildebrand, Obama’s national deputy campaign director, “Barack was hoping to launch a candidacy that would bring millions of new people into the political process, that would inspire them to stay active in politics so that, should he actually succeed in winning the presidency, he would have additional ability to govern with the backing of millions of activists from all 50 states who could help him pass the progressive agenda through Congress.”

Yes, this is important information. It's hard to believe that it's ok for John McCain to not be proud of america, but not ok for someone else.
The blatant misquoting and mischaracterizations are embarrassing. Unfortunately we do have to respond to these accusations and point out McCain's hypocracy.
The sad part is that these smear take us further away from meaningful political discussion. Our national conversation is baseless accusations, name calling, misquoting/mischaracterization and he said/she said. We add some election year pandering with gas tax holidays, promises of oil wells and nuclear power plants (delivered many years from now of course - during my second term) and we call that a campaign.
I suppose the attacks are going to ramp up as McCain get's more desperate. It's a shame that McCain is going down the road of tarnishing his own reputation and character. What is really sad is though Bush swiftboated McCain last time around, McCain is tarnishing his own reputation this time around.
McCain has not stepped up to denounce the smears regarding the 'terrorist fist bump' and set the tone for a respectful campaign. He has shown himself to be of weak character by not standing up for what is right. Being a coward for not being able to, at a minimum, attempt to control his attack dogs must be disappointing to patriots of every persuasion.
I had hoped that we could have a respectful campaign, yet despite being disappointed in McCain, i'm not suprised.

Why does Sen. Obama have to PROVE to the American people that he loves his country? It's obvious that he does. Why would he risk his life to run for President? I mean, the threats he gets every day cause him to have to have heavy Secret Service protection that is 2nd only to George Bush. He's not risking his life for a country he hates...
What do they want from him? Does he need to get a tatoo of the flag on his forehead or something. I've never seen anything like this before...

First, I loved the link and video segment. The best part was Laura Bush understanding TOTALLY what Michelle Obama meant by her comment.
Second, the reason they have to "prove" their patriotism is because of some personal associations and some comments that have been taken out of context. Remember, very few people of your 300 million participate in or follow the political process. Unfortunately for perceptions, there is a difference between a well known politician who the public has known for 25 years, and one who is brand new to most of them. What the right wing is trying to do is DEFINE Obama. And the campaign is doing a great job of fighting back and defining Obama as he really is, as this progresses.

Personnally, I could care less about the so-called "flip flop" on campaign finance reform. If opting-out allows me to continue to make contributions towards Sen. Obama's campaign, I strongly support it. The Republicans have used unlimited funds which are not going through the FEC in the past and will continue to do so. If we, as Americans, want to use our personal funds to help our candidate succeed, that is our right.
Its not our fault if the Republicans can't raise as much support from individual donors as Sen. Obama.
I feel that we, as grassroots supporters, will have more influence with Senator Obama as president than the large corporations and lobbyists who have purchased the White House in the past. This is the perfect opportunity for our voices to be heard.

It's looking like the FISA bill's immunity provision is too broad. I would support immunity only up to the time when it became public knowledge that there was doubt about the legality of the wiretapping. In other words, once the telecoms knew that there was doubt, they should have acted by protecting our privacy.
The immunity provision is overly broad and the compromise bill should be sent back for more work.

Today (2008-06-20 Fri) I am embarrassed to be Nancy Pelosi's constituent here in her CA-8 district. Many of us are deeply disappointed in a Democratic House that had appeared, for a while, to have finally grown some backbone.
Also disturbingly, Barack's spokesman Robert Gibbs was unable, during a conference call today, to say what Obama's position was on the FISA bill.
This is not good. Has BigO changed his position on this? (I believe he had previously opposed giving immunity to the telecoms.)
Against this possibility, please let me exhort in very strong terms to Barack and his advisors that this bill should be opposed. Rejected and denounced, as it were.
I understand the risks in this position, but this is the FIRST REAL TEST of Barack's leadership mettle. If he caves like the House Dems did, a huge sigh of disappointment will be heard from so many of us who believe that Barack really IS different.
I don't think I'm asking for martyrdom. The people are ready for a leader to stand up and tell them to NOT BE AFRAID. We DON'T have to sacrifice our Constitution in the name of the boogeyman under the bed. We CAN have security and a lawful society at the same time.
The polls, I believe, suggest the people are OK with this awful bill. That means Barack will have to do a lot of explaining. But I think he's up to it. Do you think he can do it? YES, HE CAN!
I'm really grateful for a candidate like Barack whose gifts of eloquence and intelligence make him the perfect person to tell us what we need to hear, not necessarily what we want to hear, nor what the MSM thinks we should hear. We grass-rooters have given Barack the tools he needs to carry this message for all of us. This is a tough one, but I'm holding faith that he WILL deliver.
PLEASE, if any of you staffers read this message and find that it resonates with your values, I implore you to push it up the chain as far as you can. Thank you so very much. --jzap

Obama has made a statement:
Link
"Under this compromise legislation, an important tool in the fight against terrorism will continue, but the President's illegal program of warrantless surveillance will be over.
It restores FISA and existing criminal wiretap statutes as the exclusive means to conduct surveillance - making it clear that the President cannot circumvent the law and disregard the civil liberties of the American people.
It also firmly re-establishes basic judicial oversight over all domestic surveillance in the future.
>>It does, however, grant retroactive immunity<<, and
<<I will work in the Senate to remove this provision>> so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses.
But this compromise guarantees a thorough review by the Inspectors General of our national security agencies to determine what took place in the past, and ensures that there will be accountability going forward.
By demanding oversight and accountability, a grassroots movement of Americans has helped yield a bill that is far better than the Protect America Act." [more at link]
I pray that the retroactive immunity will be REMOVED, otherwise -- PLEASE, Sen. Obama -- VOTE NO on the whole thing.
It's so disingenuous for congresspeople to assert that we need more leniency in our wiretapping laws to protect us from terrorists. It was perfectly fine the way it was originally written.
The bush administration started the illegal wiretapping A FULL SEVEN MONTHS BEFORE 9/11. Did that protect us from the terrorists THEN? NO.
Thanks, Senator Obama for standing up to those who are working to take away our freedom - one bite at a time.
