Ben Logan is on the ground now in New Hampshire, helping lay the groundwork for the state's general election campaign. He's in Unity this morning, live blogging today's Unity Rally with Barack and Hillary Clinton.
The crowd has for the most part filed in, and there's excitement in the air. This kind of event would not be successful without the help of our volunteers. We caught up with Janet and Julia, volunteers for the event. Both of them had had the chance to see Barack during the New Hampshire, but Janet was excited to see Senator Clinton for the first time. While they were awaiting marching orders, Janet said:
We're so excited that the campaign is coming back to the Northeast. And it's warm this time!
She's right about the warm part, temparatures are expected to be around 80 degrees at the start of today's event. The crowd has been enjoying the pleasant weather so far. We saw documentarian Ken Burns in the leadup to the event. Burns had this to say about Barack:
If you were a a TV cable bloviator in 1860, when we elected another skinny lawyer from Illinois, a one-term congressman who lost a Senate election, you probably would be concerned about experience. And yet he (Abraham Lincoln) ended up saving the country.
Plenty of support for Hillary Clinton can be seen in the crowd filing in. David is a Veteran of the Korean War and was a supporter of Senator Clinton in the primary. He's hoping that veterans' issue stay in the spotlight in the months ahead. Margie was a volunteer Senator Clinton in the primary. She lives in Unity and came to the event with her friend Gata (who supported John Edwards before he left the race). Margie and Gata parked at a neighbor's house and made the short walk down the street to the event venue. Although disappointed her candidate didn't win the primary, she doesn't believe her fellow supporters of Senator Clinton will shy away from supporting Barack this fall. "I can't believe people would even consider that," she said.
More pictures to come soon, including a fantastic-looking Obama 08 stock car. Stay tuned.
