Yesterday we asked our supporters to do what they could to help support the relief efforts for the victims of the recent Midwest floods. In response, many of those who were directly affected responded with their own personal stories, and their thanks for the efforts and support of those who have already reached out to help.
From Mason City, Iowa:
Thank you from Mason City, IA. We were affected by flooding over the weekend. We lost our drinking water on Sunday. Today we have water for baths/showers and toilets. Tomorrow we should have drinking water. It is heartbreaking to see the damage all the way from Mason City, northern Iowa continuing downstream to Charles City, Waverly, Waterloo/Cedar Falls and other smaller towns. I understand Des Moines is getting hit today with flooding as well. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support during this difficult time for many, many Iowans and Midwesterners.
From Joy in Iowa:
Another Iowan here saying *thanks* to all of you for your kind words of support! Des Moines has pockets throughout that are under water, including the downtown area. We live in Marion, which is a suburb of Cedar Rapids. I work on the SW side of Cedar Rapids, so I had to cross the Cedar river to get to work. That was scary! The water is so high, fields turned into lakes, and whole trees were floating down the river.

From Eomala in Iowa:
All of downtown is closed down, and the National Guard has been called in. Back in January on the night before the caucus, we went to see Barack Obama in Veterans' Memorial Coliseum in Cedar Rapids. That's on an island which is now flooded. I was shocked at how high the water was yesterday, but I haven't been in that area today because it's being evacuated.
From Sam in Wisconsin:
Thank you to all those who are donating to help. I live in Wisconsin and while there are no direct floods around us I have experienced a flooding of my home that caused many of us to evacuate. Thank you so much for your efforts to help us in the Midwest!
The American Red Cross is providing relief efforts in Indiana, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and West Virginia. You can help out now by donating or volunteering at a local shelter. Visit the Red Cross website for more information on how you can help.
