Class, from day one until the job is done, and from head to toe.
This campaign, this candidate, and this group of volunteers is just dripping with class.
Piece of Evidence #237: The link on the homepage here asking Barack supporters to send a word of thanks to Ms. Clinton.
Barack is going to win this thing not because of any one specific thing, not one silver bullet that the pundits can then dissect, label, package and market to future candidates. He is going to win because of the entire enchilada, not because of any one factor.
Read today's lame "What Went Wrong" feature in the NYT. They asked an assortment of folks what went wrong with the Clinton campaign, and the result is a mix of rationalization and the political corollary to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle (the process of analyzing something impacts that which you are analyzing). Everyone is looking for that Sherlock Holmesian "a-ha!" moment, when the fact of the matter is quite simply, she was good, he was better.
Link
Penn: It was the message (that I wrote), it was the money (that they over-payed me)?
Lost Friends: Let's slice and dice the American people into convenient demographic packages, even if it doesn't make sense. (They call all of us, instead of Barack this time, "elitists." I'll take that as a compliment.)
Christine Todd Whitman: It was sexism, plain and simple. (Please remember that Hillary was the first to say that she reminded some voters of their first wife, and yet when someone else says that they are sexist. Meanwhile, it's not sexist to vote for her simply because she's a woman.)
Michelle Cottle: No one really wanted to vote for her but they needed a good excuse, and eventually everyone found one. (Couldn't that explanation explain nearly everything in life? "It was going to happen that way, as soon as it did." Rather tautological, isn't it?)
And they go on...
Why the rush to proclaim some magical formula to the political process? How about, quite simply: She was good, he was better?

Hopefully soon everyone will stop asking "what went wrong with the Clinton campaign?" and focus more on "what went right with the Obama camapign?"
It would truly be a powerful thing to have people analyze what happens when leaders (and potential leaders)inspires people to work towards a higher purposea and to focus on principles of unification rather than division, and allows individuals from the bottom up to use their creativity and initiative. Now THAT'S a discussion worth having!

This reminds me of when Obama said in his speech on Tuesday night that he respects McCain for his service and his accomplishments, even though he chooses to deny Obama's accomplishments.
That goes for a lot of the establishment. They think he's just a rock star, an "American Idol." They don't get that he's got so much more underneath the calm, cool, and collective demeanor and the superb speaking skills.

I agree. I never quite understand what people mean by "he came from nowhere." I think because he doesn't have a "family name" people think he came from nowhere. But if you take your time and look at his bio...he was on track for political greatness since Columbia.

Where do you get your figure "40 Million" people? I don't think he got over 18 million votes.
Also, what qualifications would Donna Brazile bring to the job Secretary of State? Surely you wouldn't expect him to choose her because of the color of her skin, because she has NO qualifications. I certainly think Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden or even Bill Richardson would bring more experience to the job of Secretary of State than Donna Brazile who runs campaigns for a living.

Hey Obama Family:
I am a delegate at the Texas Convention that just adjorned VERY late last night. I haven't slept much and I am exhausted, so if what I write below is somewhat out of whack, please forgive me in advance.
To make a long story short, I feel totally bewildered. My disappointment extends beyond my own feelings. Without going into a lot of detail, I feel deeply saddened at some of the things that I have witnessed tonight, in particular how the At-Large Delegates were "selected" and quite frankly, it makes me want to throw in the towel and not come ten feet within politics for the rest of my natural life! It is absolutely the WORST feeling to be surrounded by hundreds of people who endure 18-hour days on end who walk away feeling cheated.
Many first-time participants were at the Texas Democratic Convention. However, I feel like my hopes were totally stepped on because I don't have a particular name, affiliation or profession/bank roll. This convention will be my first and LAST.
I am a 29-year-old graduate student who has been unemployed (NOT by choice) for over a year. Instead of sitting around feeling sad, I decided to volunteer, knock on doors, etc. during the entire primary season. Sometimes in snow, sometimes getting flipped off, yelled at and doors slammed in my face. Other times, getting quite the opposite effect of having Obama supporters welcome me in their houses and share stories about the Civil Rights era, Mark Twain and their favorite "Obama" moments.
I accepted a position to volunteer as an Obama Organizing Fellow (it's a non-paying position) this summer and I am seriously thinking about NOT DOING IT ANYMORE because it feels like working hard isn't rewarded. It's not about getting glory, but frankly at this point I want to quit. I am totally broke and don't want to spend my final pennies in the bank account on a one-way ticket from Texas to Philly, to work for free AGAIN for three months, just to be denied later an "invitation" to the events that really count and to be compensated so that I can actually LIVE.
I am tired, and I want to quit. I can't take it anymore. I volunteered in so many states, made thousands of calls and now I feel like the door has slammed shut in my face. THE END.

sorry for your troubles whitney. If you can't afford or don't feel intrinsically rewarded from volunteering, maybe you should not do it any more. You must remember that volunteer work is often a thankless and unrecognized endeavor, and it should be done for the cause, not for your own personal fulfillment.

Hi Whitney. I hope you get some well-deserved rest - sounds like you earned it! Somewhere I read about the first Dem. convention Barack went to- his credit card was denied when he tried to rent a car, and he couldn't get access to anywhere that mattered- he had to watch it all on TV! So my point is, try not to get too discouraged. Barack didn't let that stop him from doing important work. It never feels good to be excluded- but being shut out doesn't mean you have to be shut down.
Maybe seeng Obama elected will make you feel better. Because if that happens, you really have helped to make it possible!

Hi Whitney,
I'll echo what a lot of folks have already said - Thank you. You're efforts have truly paid dividends, and you have participated in a history-making process. It's sometimes difficult to see those accomplishments when you're right in the middle of things and exhausted from your efforts. Once you manage to string together a few good nights' rest, it will come into greater focus.
That being said, don't be afraid to take care of yourself! If you need to find some work and make some money, do it. If you're going to be effective at achieving your goals, you need to be healthy, you need to eat right, you need to sleep restfully, and that's all very hard to do when you have personal concerns hanging over your head.
Another poster suggested temp work (which is what I do to keep the bills paid while trying to juggle school, kids, and my volunteer activities). It's a good gig. Whether you do this at your home base, or you do it in Philadelphia, it helps and puts you more in charge of your schedule. Find a nationwide agency so they can help find positions for you when you go from place to place, if you want to stay with the campaign.
Most of all, know that your efforts are appreciated. I can't go on the road for the cause, because I have kids I need to take care of. When you go out there, you're doing it for 10, 20, 100 people like me.
Bravo sister. Just don't kill yourself doing it, okay? We'd really like to see you at the victory celebrations!

Hey Whitney,
It is understandable after all the hard work that you have put in that you would feel upset about the events at the Texas Convention. It became clear to me at the Precinct Convention that I would never make it to the State Convention as a delegate, much less the National Convention. The historical politics of the Democractic Party in Texas is the politics of the past, and who knows who, and "behind closed doors.
So with that in mind, working in the Obama Campaign became my focus. I certainly have not done all you have done..because you obviously have much more energy at your age than I. Sometimes we get tired and need to take a break,
but I hope that you don't do it from bitterness from what happened to you in Austin. Because you have worked in so many places (I only in N.C.,
you have a valuable resource to help where ever you live. So maybe recouping and "Blooming Where Your Planted" is a good idea. When I was in Greensboro, I saw young people who were
worn completely out from the work that they were doing..and when sending out the canvass teams would say..just imagine how tired Barak is. You and all like you are a new force for change, and it can be disappointing at times and so draining.
So take sometime and take care of yourself.

Dear Whitney,
I don't know what happened at the Texas Convention, but I'm sorry you're feeling so whupped. Now please listen, dear. I am a 60 year old white woman from a rural Nevada mining town. There are a lot of attitudes where I live (very, very RED corner of Nevada). I stand in awe at what's happened in this primary campaign and at the young people, like you, who gave heart and soul to make this miracle happen. You've truly altered the course of history. This is the first time since my teens I've actually been hopeful about my country. Hope has infected me. YOU did that!
Change is hard; it takes sacrifice. Making the sacrifice brings its own rewards, though at times it seems thankless and even foolhardy, but I'd guess that you have a lot to put on your resume as a result of your experience. Certainly you have stories.
It would be cool to have a resume caching facility on this website for young people like you! In the meantime, how about posting one (after getting some well-deserved rest)?
In any case, YES YOU CAN. You've already made a difference in my life.

First off, huge thanks for all you've done, Whitney. Every act you've done has helped us take our country back, and we are deeply grateful.
Secondly, I hear you, loud and clear. I'm in Iowa, and a delegate. We didn't have the problem you did (no cheating), but it was ridiculously poorly run, inefficient, and a great big testament to what's wrong with politics, even when corruption is not an issue. We have yet another convention this Saturday, and I am not looking forward to it, apart from being able to meet some of the great folks from this blog, like marytnurse. After working with the Obama campaign, which was tightly run, extremely efficient, inclusive, respectful, and of course honest and transparent, everything else is letdown.
But the thing is, Whitney, unless folks like you keep staying involved, keep trying, keep caring, things will just get worse (I'm reminded here of my tag sentence, from the Lorax: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.") Individually, we get disgusted and disillusioned, but together we can reform the system, and make it a little more honest, a little more efficient, a little more reflective of this wondrously diverse democracy that is our country.
So thank you, thank you, thank you, for fighting the good fight. Please take a well-deserved rest. But then we need you to get back to work. You are clearly good at what you do, and the whole country needs you to keep doing it. We haven't won this thing yet. But if we keep working even harder, even better, then we most certainly will.
Watch this clip of Barack talking to volunteers and staff. I think you'll find it extremely helpful, especially the last 5 minutes or so:

Thanks again, Whitney. Even if you don't always get the recognition you have earned, you are one of the heroes of this movement.

Can you do some temp or part-time work so you have enough money to get by, and still keep volunteering? That way, when the job market is better and you're applying for jobs you really want, your resume can be focused on the volunteer work you did, and not so much on whatever mindless labor you did so you'd be able to pay rent. Employers usually question long stretches of unemployment, and if you settle for a total crap job, then they see you as a McWalmart employee.
Is it too late to get involved in Obama's community building program? It doesn't pay money, but they were looking for people to provide a place to stay for the volunteers.

Thanks to everyone who has written the encouraging comments. I think I just felt a bit hacked off at the way the 24 At-Large delegates (most of whom, from what I could tell were not even AT THE CONVENTION!) were supposedly "recommended" and eventually picked to go to Denver. The other 3,500 of us who were not, found ourselves wondering why we had to go through all the trouble of not only GETTING TO Austin, but going through all the chaos and disorder that happened last night....at some points, I really felt like I was wasting my time.
I love Barack and I am thrilled to be around for this moment in history, so I am not angry at him at all.
To put it lightly, I guess I'm just pissed off at what's going on in my country, I'm pissed off that I am facing a "mortgage-sized" student loan balance and now that I have been unemployed well over a year now I am at my wit's end! I have called temp agencies, networked, smoozed, even pitching myself to folks that I meet in elevators, grocery stores, etc. to no avail.
I am also pissed off that I am expected to work for free this summer in this Obama program. I didn't have a problem with working for free during the primary season since it's expected that every single penny goes to fundraising for ads, etc. But I guess now my patience is wearing thin and I am just at a loss for words...
Okay, so the options that I have are A.) Stay at home and not participate anymore or B.) Go for broke
What do you all think I should do???

Hi, Whitney:
Sorry you feel so frustrated and down. In response to your question about what you can do, here are my suggestions:
1. First off catch up on your sleep, eat properly, and get exercise. You've got to be in shape to let good luck happen to you. If you are exhausted, you're going to be irritable and emotional and no one wants someone like that to work for them.
2. You need some paid work. This has got to be a problem throughout the country, as well as in this campaign. Talk to people at headquarters about organizing a job-finding service using the same techniques as Barack has organized his fund-raising. If you are good on computers, perhaps you can do this. Maybe it can occur through a link from the campaign web site. I live in San Francisco, in the same neighborhood as Craig of Craig's list fame. They started their incredible web site a number of years ago and now everyone can find good jobs and good apartments through Craig's List.
3. Many of us have been in your shoes before. When you are so down, you have to recover before you can really be employable because you are too stressed out right now. Everyone wants to help people who help themselves. Barack is so inspirational that many people just want to drop what they are doing and go to work for him. But unless they are independently wealthy, there is a limit to how much they can do. You can do most for him when you are taking care of yourself first.
4. Check out jobs listed on the Craig's List in your area. What are the skills which you have? Also, talk to paid people you have met in your travels and ask them for advice. If you don't have a place to stay, there is a web site where you can borrow someone's couch. Work as a waiter. There are organizations in San Francisco which help people get hair cuts and appropriate interview clothes for job interviews. Whatever you need, reach out and people will help you get there. But first, you have to get some rest.
Good luck, and thanks for all of your work for Barack. Barack gets exercise every day. We all need to follow his example.

Dear Whitney,
I just posted comments to part of your discussions, but to this question, you know what you can do. Only you can decide, and I am sure that whatever you decide will be the best. As I said before, you have worked hard and have valuable skills that can be used anyway where, and if you need money that has to be a consideration in your decision.

It's so funny how the grass is greener on the other side. I'm 29, just got out of law school and have been working at a law firm for 2 years now. My job is very demanding and doesn't allow for a lot of extra-curricular activity. I haven't been able to dedicate much time to the campaign, only money. But I wish I could DO more, and sometimes I think about scaling back my work time, to free up some extra-curricular time. But of course, that would affect my job.
So I say go for it. It's better to spend your time being active and being productive than not. And you never know who you might meet that could open up doors for your jobwise.

Whitney,
I am the single mother of three children, two sons who are college-aged and a little girl who is 10. I've done everything I can within the confines of having to work and raise them. My 21 year old is living in Mankato and trying to make it to school, work and stay involved in this campaign. He has friends who donate blood for food, and even though he as an A student, and my younger son a football star, I simply could not afford college for them. Its why, recently my dream of winning the lottery now woudl mean to me that if I did, I would save enough for them to be able to attend college and I really believe I'd give the rest fighting to get Barack into office. Its funny because I even dreamed of taking every dime to make Texas blue this year. To me, your efforts are why I keep trying. You, are precisely the reason that in any of my spare time I call and what little money I have left goes to this campaign. People like you all across this country, who when I felt discouraged would offer me up hope. I am ecouraged and inspired when I hear all that you've done. Adding up all that each of us has done has amounted to a primary victory and if we stay engaged, it amounts to a win for this country.
I have been concerned all along that this long primary season would not only divide this party, but it would exhaust those of us who've been working so hard for what seems like years.
I am in hopes, that you rest, assess your personal needs and take advantage of the chance to bring the change that will provide long term opportunity for you. Regardless, Whitney, your efforts have already been worth it. You've already evidenced Change we all can believe in.
Thank you, and I too am envious, this a choice you even have the chance to make.

Whitney, I too was a delegate at the TX convention, and I too am exhausted today. It was chaotic at times. It was frustrating at times. I kept having to remind myself (a 1st-time convention attendee---1st time participant in any type of politics besides going to the poll on election day)that there were thousands of 1st-timers and this was the biggest TX state convention ever. There were a lot of 1st's going on, and there was no opportunity to practice and iron out the kinks. I actually believe that things ended up going well considering the challenges we all faced.
I left last night at 10:30 (I'm quite a bit older than you, and had simply run out of steam). The Nominations Committee for At-Large Delegates was still meeting and they told us it would be another couple of hours---I couldn't make it that long. I don't know who they ended up electing (I've searched the web to the best of my limited web-searching talents and can't find any way to learn whether or not I was one of the lucky at-large delegates. I'm female and Caucasian, so I know the odds are very looooooong----but I'd still like to know for sure...)
My advice to you: DON'T GIVE UP! Don't stop working with the Obama campaign.
Now our choice is: McCain or Obama. Therefore NOW is when it really is CRITICAL that we ALL KEEP WORKING!
Who is going to make the CHANGES that our country needs to get our economy turned around and stimulate job growth---SO YOU CAN FIND A JOB? It sure ain't McSame! We HAVE TO GET OBAMA ELECTED!
The experience you are getting is invaluable. By putting yourself out there you are meeting people you would never be exposed to otherwise. Your 'network' is getting bigger and bigger. You never know when one of the links in this network is going to be the link to the job you need.
You have time right now. Time is not paying your bills, but it is something you can use to make sure that we get THE President we who will make the CHANGES in our country that will make big positive differences in your situation.
DON'T STOP WORKING FOR OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!

"I am also pissed off that I am expected to work for free this summer in this Obama program"
Whitney,
All of your hard work for Senator Obama is greatly appreciated as is the hard work of many more like you. But, you were never "expected" to work "for free" for Senator Obama and the interest of our nation--that is a choice that you have made and a choice that you can change. Like the many volunteers that came before and with you, you have freedom of choice--that's why it is called volunteering. Those who have and continue to work for many different causes will often be disappointed if they are working for a payoff, whether it be a position as a delegate or even just to see an agenda fulfilled. May I suggest that you look for a position, whether volunteering or on staff, that you find fulfilling in itself rather than a position that will leave you filling "pissed off" if the objective payoff is not what you anticipated.
So many participated in the delegate selection process, and many went home without credentials to Denver, but that neither negates their value nor the value of their participation in the future. Even Senator Clinton, after 17 months of campaigning, is not going to Denver with the credential for which she worked so hard.
I hope that after getting some sleep, you will look at your participation positively, and that one part of your retrospection will include the value of your experience as a learning process. We need people to engage in the process and learn to navigate and to master its intricacies. That is one way to facilitate change and to catalyze the Democratic Party agenda. Just think, two years from now, you can take a newby to the convention and help guide them through the process!
Most important, Whitney, take care of yourself physically, mentally, and financially. If you need to take a break from volunteering full-time, then do it and come back when you can and how you can. There are so many ways to engage the process and all of them are greatly appreciated. Every volunteer is needed and appreciated, but there are many ways to participate in the political process. May I suggest that you find a way that brings you joy, and allows you to support yourself financially.
Good luck to you, and know that

Hi Whitney,
I,too am a single mom with 2 young adults in college. My daughter, much like yourself took a leave of absence from her senior year to dedicate her time to help in this campaign. She was starting to get a bit dscouraged until she ran into a fellow classmate at the Oregon HQ's who had been accepted into law school and delayed her acceptance to work on the Obama team.
We've all gone through the same canvassing experiences, but I want to encourage you to stick with your commitment to the campaign.
Just a few thoughts that might help:
(1) If you have worked within 5 quarters, you are eligible for unemployment benefits. I would apply for them asap through EDD in your city.
(2)I would gather recommendations from other campaign leaders that you worked with and get your information to Senator Obama's campaign manager in Chicago (David Plouffe) and apply for a paid position with the campaign. (you've earned the opportunity)
(3) If you log onto www.collegedems.com the website was taking applications for delegates to the convention sponsored by the college democratic association. Check to see if there are more slots available.
(4) Also, try www.mydreamjob.com and search jobs that are available right now in your area.
I am so proud of you and your tenacity. I applaud your strength, vision and all the work you have done. Without you and all the other magnificent 'foot soldiers'... We would not be standing on the threshold of change as we are today. Good luck to you and God Bless. KEEP THE FAITH!

Barack,
I and other Hillary Clinton supporters are flocking to you, as we should. You are my Democratic candidate. Please be mindful of some concerns that I (and many others) have re: your successful candidacy and presidential term.
1) Experience. You know McCain will attack you there. You're going to need a running mate who brings unequivocal experience to the campaign and the White House.
2) Method for change. Your campaign so far has been about "changing the game" in Washington. You have to convince the American people that you have what it takes to change the game, because there are a lot of people interested in protecting the status quo. How are you going to appease them? How will you force them to accept new terms? How will bring in another 800 lb gorilla willing to play the new rules?
We want to believe. We want a change. We can't see there from here. Please don't let us down.

I believed in Obama from the beginning because of his obvious approach to politics, which were transparency and change. Obama has vowed to be everyone's president and that alone is an new approach to politics. He also vowed to challenge and write new policies will be useful for governing a country. Does he has a difficult job of course however, he has employed the public (taxpayers) to help with this process otherwise nothing will happen. This time the country will be governed by the people for the people. That is a ratical change that makes you sleep well at night, believe in a high quality for your children future, and increase the standards living for people who are working hard. For a change your efforts can pay off in a way it should have for many years before this remarkable time called"Obama," and we must do all that we can to enhance this process for the future of our children.
Hillary speech was very dynamic and compelling, however, her actions does not match her speech. She suspended her campaign, meaning if anything happens she can get back in. Suspecious behavior with all the implications of hoping or knowing something will happen. Remember Hillary lost the race for the democratic nominee, she did not concede. There is a difference you can concede before the race is over not after it is over. She lost and now she is waiting for the unthinkable to happen so she can restore her place as the democratic nominee. Hillary has not made any public announcement to indicate she wants the v.presidency because that would ruin her chances of securing the presidency if something happens to Obama. Hillary believe in hope, the hope she makes for herself. Be careful...

It is my opinion that Hillary "suspended" her campaign because she still needs to raise money. I think once she completely ends it, that cuts her time short on fundraising. She has a lot of debt. She wants time to collect money.

Marie, you are absolutely correct. She cannot recoup any monies to repay her debt if she concedes; however, she can up until the convention by "suspending" her campaign. I feel she did a wonderful job yesterday with her speech. Welcome to any HRC supporters. Our fight as Democrats has just begun. United we stand...Yes We Can...Yes We Must!!

I think many of us are suspicious because this has been played as though she was a viable candidate up until last Tuesday, when the truth is, once Barack recieved the majority of delegates, it would have meant that those would have had to be overturned in order for her to win.
I am one of those who realizes the passion of her supporters, but believe the divide was created by Hillary and her leadership in trying to bring Barack down. I am so tired of this being considered a fluke, and the legitmacy of Barack for Presdient being undermined by the divisive things that the HRC campaign brought into this. I am tired of everyone talking about how her supporters need time to grieve. While I think that's true, I need time too. I have seen so much hate and disregard from that camp, its hard to heal.
Honestly, when she was speaking yesterday, as I said I was moved to tears, I think primarily out of relief, that finally she was going to stop trying to bring him down in order to win.
I hope for unity as well, but I think its a bit much for the media or anyone to suggest that some of us who are hurt and utterly sad at how we've been treated need to hop on board isn't Hillary great train. It will take more than one speech for me to heal too. I want to, I am aiming for it, but when I hear the vile of the supporters, I blame her.
I am so tired of everyone making this win seem like some crazy fluke that if only it was managed better Hillary would have won. and the lists of reasons that all undermine the legitmacy of his nomination. Women, white collar workers, mismanagement, presumption, the media, etc.
What if people recognize that Barack and his message gave us something to vote for rather than against. What if its that simple?
What I am angry at is she gave the Repulicans mounds of ammunition, which they are using in full force. She knew very well she was doing it. I am sorry, I know everyones all hugs and kisses, but I've never been a win at all costs supporter, which includes accepting being treated like that for any reason. Her angry supporters reflect her message.

As long as her campaign is suspended, she can raise funds to retire her debt.
Don't be fooled. Hillary Clinton does not have any 'tricks' or intent to derail Obama's campaign.
She said she endorses him---she means it. She says she will work her tail off to get a Democrat in the White House---and she will. She MEANS that she will work to get Barack Obama elected President of the United States.
Take it to the bank.
It's really simple: we are ALL DEMOCRATS working to get our candidate elected in November.
Welcome Hillary Clinton supporters. Welcome John Edwards supporters. Welcome Ron Paul supporters. Welcome all Independents and Republicans and Democrats who want to work TOGETHER to defeat John McCain in November!

I feel bad that you couldn't afford the gas to see Obama. Hopefully he will be our next president, and you will be in much better financial shape within a year to 18 months.
My husband just lost his job yesterday, so that makes me empathize with you even more.
One way to help his campaign without spending any $. is to volunteer from your home. Get in touch with the Obama campaign to find out how. If you have any problems doing so, I can contact my local Obama headquarters and see if I can help you get in touch.
Good luck, Jeanne!!! Si, se puede, with our next president, Barack Obama!!!

Are we going to have one? I don't want to be presumptuous, because I am new. And I don't have much time for blogging. Still, I am not seeing any mention of a relief effort, and I think it would be a good idea. Especially if we want to carry Indiana in November.
Al Gore new looked more presidential than in that old T-shirt all smudged from loading and unloading boxes of supplies on those two planes he brought to New Orleans after those levies burst.
I thnk it's kind of like it says in the book written by James, in the New Testament:
"If a brother or sister be in need...and ye say unto them, Depart in peace...& ye give them not those things which are needful for the body...what doth it profit?"
or Bertolt Brecht, in Three-Penny Opera:

The Republican Party has many staffers who are lobbyists as does John McCains campaign so they have not refused donations from Lobbyists and PACs. Lou Dobbs of CNN has congratulated Obama and the DNC re: this change in DNC policy.

Good Morning ObamaNation;
I could not sleep, so I decided to get up and come join the Obama Party. As I watched the speech by Hillary it reminded me of why I belong to the party in which I do. And it reminded me why I have been a community organizer since 1983. I think we had two great canidates, and my choice was aways Senator Obama. But I do want the Hillary supporters to know that my vote for Obama was not a personal vote against Hillary. My vote had to do with the fact that I know what power Barack could bring to bringing the American People into the possibility. With Obama being a community organizer he brings a different type of experience to the country. He brings the community together as a Country with new hopes, and dreams. And he brings an excitement that lights up the sky like fireworks on the 4th of July. We are truly blessed, and we all must work for the good of the Country we love.
My friend ask me today if I had to describe Barack to somebody in three words, how will I describe him? I said to my friend: Barack is integrity, compassion, and abundance.
Integrity- because he speaks the truth to the Country.
Compassion- because he can see and smell the need for a better Country.
Abundance- He believes that we all have a right to life, liberty, and prosperity.
If you ask me who Barack is, that is what I will say. Now each of you need to find three words that describe Barack.

Thanks to all of you for participating in the excercise I posted earlier. The 3 word descriptions that each of you used are very strong and beautiful. Sometimes we as supporters get asked a simple question: Why do we support Obama? And some of us attempt to give long answers to a question that should not need thought. The 3 word excersise can help each of you be original in your own description and belief as to why Obama is the best canidate, and what you like about him. So when people ask me: Who is Barack Obama? I say without hesitation. Barack Obama to me is: Integrity, Compassion, and Abundance, and that is who Barack is to me.

Get Ready Obama Nation,
We will be seeing the Plouffe Push starting Mid-June! We are going to need to raise a HUGH amount of MONEY. We need to start getting somewhere between $50-$75 million per month just for the advertising push.
The primary is over - now it is time to get serious. We can raise somewhere between $500 million to $1 Billion if we each give somewhere around $300 - $500 as soon as possible.
All the maxed out donors $2,300 we can give another $2,300 for the General.
I am hopeful now that we have truly started the UNITY Process that Plouffe will set a HUGH GOAL for US to ALL Reach by July 4th, 2008 [Our Independence Day].

That speech will go down as one of the greatest disasters of 2008. But what a beautiful disaster it was. I am so sick of those Entitled-and-Arrogant Thugs thinking their way is THE way. Oy vey.

Hello Diehards,
If I can join you a little, I'll say there was something definitely wrong with McCain's speech, which I label 'unnecessary intervention'.
First, the timing: it was like someone who realized that he was completely out of the spotlight and wanted to joined by all means.
Second, the content: he offered Change! I laughed so loudly. What kind of change? We already had the Change We've Been Waiting For! He said something to the effect of "there is good change, there is wrong change". Then I thought: "That's a good one. Let's see, which one does he think he is?" To confuse himself more, he added: "There is change going forward, there is change going backward." At that point, I know that he was delusional. To prove me right, he interjected the idea that on different issues, he was against Bush while BO sided with Bush and completely his plea by stating among the 3 (Clinton still in the race then), he was the agent of change. I knew then that he had lost it completely.
The delivery: that green wallpaper behind him was troublesome. And those deep voices cheering him to make more funny statements added to the macabre of the moment.
No. I will leave his grin alone. I just thought that this man is making a mockery of himself. I hope that he did not notice how quickly the cameras turned off from him, without an ounce of excuse, as soon as BO clinched the nomination.
On another note, on McCain website, he labeled himself "A Leader who can believe in". What a joke! No creativity. He had to mirror BO's words with no shame.
However, make no mistakes. He and his republican backers will do whatever it takes to push him through the doors of the WH. There are many ads coming out to paint BO in the most damaging light. One of them using HRC's own negative attack from the campaign trail. We have to be vigilant and convince everyone we can to vote democrat this November. There is no time for complacency.
With this, I thank you for listening to me.

I thought it didn't matter "when" you give. You can give up to the 4600 now, and 2300 will be allocated to the primary and 2300 to the general. Any funds left over at the end of the primary can be rolled over into the general. Am I correct anyone?

My suggestion is to start giving to the DNC.
You can give 2300 for Primary
2300 for General
BUT you can give up to 23,000 annually to the DNC.
AND they are going to need it. McCain raised 21 mil last month and 23 mil from the RNC. I know we can do better than that!
Also give some money to Moveon.org. I know they are a PAC, but Barack does not take money from them and they have a really good commercial out right now about McCain.

Competition versus Cooperation |
Report to Admin
By
Benjamin Vos, Nashville
Jun 8th 2008 at 3:41 am EDT
John McCain's solution on most domestic issues is to create more competition.
1. Healthcare - more competition between drug companies. more competition between insurance companies.
2. Economy - cut taxes and create competition among businesses. survival of the fittest.
3. Education - promote school choice to get schools competing with each other.
Barack Obama supports more cooperation:
1. Healthcare - provide universal access. simplify the process to provide care, and allow government to provide a best-in-class system to provide for the needs of those who are unemployed or without insurance. (By the way, under McCain's plan, if you end up being unemployed, you're also uninsured. Tough luck if you get injured or have a sick family member. Maybe you can just divorce them like McCain did, or get on disability like he did.)
2. Economy - Obama wants to work with businesses to create green tech jobs, improve automotive fuel efficiency standards, train our workforce, and protect American jobs and workers.
3. Education - Obama wants to reward school systems that do well rather than simply punishing those that fail. He wants to reward good teachers to improve retention rates. And he wants to cooperate more between federal gov't standards and actually funding the mandate of No Child Left Behind so that children are not left behind.

"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

I don't believe you either. Posts are never deleted unless it's some type of racist, threatening, or obscene comment.
As I posted earlier:
No matter your personal feelings--it's time to put them aside for the good of us all. You don't have to "love" any of the candidates. You don't have to "love" ALL of their positions, or statements, or mistakes. But if you in your heart love America and want to see her continue to grow and prosper, and if you believe that the democrats have a better plan to make that happen than the republicans (who don't have a very good track record at this point--war, $4.00 gas, forclosures, etc.)then you need to get on board. No matter how you feel, Barack Obama is the presumptive Democratic nominee. Today, HRC said she is supporting him. Obama supporters make not like her, but he also said today, that he welcomes and appreciates her support.
THIS IS THE REALITY OF TODAY-LIKE IT OR NOT.
MAKE YOUR CHOICE.
BE NEGATIVE AND SELFISH AND UNINFORMED.
OR, MOVE FORWARD, IF NOT FOR YOURSELF--MAYBE FOR YOUR CHILDREN, THE TROOPS--MAYBE JUST FOR THE SAKE OF OUR COUNTRY.
This is not a game. It's not a child's momentary distress. This is about life and death. What kind of life do you want? What kind of President do you want? What kind of country do you want?

Daniel:
We appreciate the presence and participation of you and other Hillary supporters. While I respectfully understand your efforts to promote her inclusion as VP on Obama's ticket, I believe it would be a profound mistake for the following reasons:
1) Hillary really wants to be president and after 8 years in the White House, it is doubtful that she would be able to "take orders" from Obama, which would be necessary for her to fulfill her role as VP.
2) There would be a perception that she was the "power behind the throne" during the Obama campaign and presidency -- a fatal flaw for his legacy.
3) With Hillary comes, also, Bill, and because of constitutional limitations, it would be unprecedented for a former president to be back in a vice presidential (they come as a governing pair) role. Bad news for any president to have a former president in the mix, making statements that may be contrary to the administration's policies.
4) Obama's presidency should not be viewed as a continuation or extension of the Clinton presidency, but as Barack Obama's presidency on its own merits. Hillary as VP would fuel the perception of Clinton's third term.
I know that I would be disappointed if Obama lost. But you have to admit that he won the nomination fair and square based on the rules which were set forth at the start of the campaign. He has also always treated Hillary with respect and has not resorted to personal attacks.
Again, welcome to the Obamanation and we look forward to working with you toward a victory for Barack in November.

You will have more problems being warmly received with negative or aggressive comments towards our candidate, Barack Obama. Talk of "voting against [Obama]" unless you are successful in your "large-scale effort aimed at forcing Obama to have Hillary on the ticket" is misplaced on this blog. You will find it difficult to engage a constructive, supportive dialogue with inflammatory statements like these. Please don't be confused, we are welcoming to Hillary supporters here, but we find posts that are aggressive & threatening to Obama inappropriate here. We have to think outside of our own personal cacoon where our fears and hopes and insecurities lay. I am sure if you think about it longer, you will come to see that you can assert into the long-term conversation of voting properly for Obama. No knee jerk reactions can replace thoughtful introspection about the crisis our Country is in. Think about all of the problems we face; then decide who really is best for you and your Country.

Most particularly Barack Obama is integrity personified. Hillary Clinton has proven to be dishonesty personified.
The question: Does Barack Obama have the courage to deliver Change in Washington?

Bill Clinton vetted? I think so. After all, he was president of the United States. I would be more concerned that Michelle Obama wouldn't pass the mustard, what with that thesis of hers. And, if you haven't read it, it is a real good way to get to know the "real" Michelle.

Clinton campaign official: 'She is not seeking the vice presidency'
Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday disavowed efforts by some supporters who have urged Barack Obama to choose her as his running mate. The push-back came a day after the former first lady said she would end her quest for the Democratic nomination and endorse the Illinois senator.
"She is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her," communications director Howard Wolfson said. "The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Right!
After she stole the limelight on Barack's wonderful, historical day, by publicly declaring her VP aspirations, her advisors reminded her that the appearance of bullying was no way to land the position.
So she toned it down. Endorsed him, even. Now she says she's not seeking the position. Let's hope and pray she's not lying again, because Barack Obama already has to deal with her ambitions.
And make no bones about it, a position of prominence for Hillary -- suitable for her ambitions -- under his administration flies directly in the face of Change in Washington.
Barack Obama has a huge dilemma on his hands, and the Republicans love it.

Daniel, I thought I heard that Hillary said she has not expressed interest in being the VP? Other people from her campaign said she was but she said that no one speaks for her. If she has not expressed strong interest, why would anyone want to force the issue? If you care so much for her, why don't you respect her choice? Choosing the VP is a complicated process with many considerations. Barack will make the final choice but he has a team of people vetting and brainstorming the issue with him that serve as consultants. If they feel that Hillary would be a great choice, they will let him know.

It has been a long and very emotional campaign. I was on the fence for a long time back and forth for Hillary and Barack. But now is our time to unite as a party no matter who is VP because we need to end the war in Iraq for the benefit of our children and our children's children. We mush educate ourselves about what Barack stands for and stand with Hillary as she endorses him.. John McCain says 100 yrs in Iraq? I certainly don't want this for the future of my son or his children or his children's children.

In fact you posted your own pro Hillary post (the same exact thing) several times in this thread, so I dont buy your story at all.
Unlike other candidates sites, comments are not held in moderation here. You can post whatever you want. Now someone reading might report what you said if its offensive and the admin will delete it. So your story doesn't make sense at all. I really wonder if youre one of the McCain bloggers over here trying to get points on the McCain blog!!

I'm with you Daniel, however I can see that the Supreme Court would be a preferred place for Hillary to impact our country for years to come. The VP can be what the President makes of it. Clinton gave Al Gore a lot more responsibilities than just going to funerals!! In fact, Al Gore pored through all kinds of records and did away with all kinds of wasteful spending. Now after 8 years of Bush, it will need to be done once again.
Also, since Hillary as First Lady attended many of the foreign funeral events representing our country, maybe Michelle might find the time to do the same.

We have the Hillcats support. Quite a bit of it. There are a few hold outs, but that is ok.
Everyone that caucused for Clinton here in my precinct is voting for Obama in Nov. We are going to state convention next weekend and they are standing with me.
I really feel no dissention here on the ground. Only here and there on the blogs.
It will die down with time. Maybe you will not quit, but many will.
It is ok to be mad. I would be mad too if the shoe was on the other foot. But I would not be trying to force Hillary to choose Barack.
It is something that the advisor's will go over and talk to Hillary about. The choice will not be yours, your websites, or anyone else's but those who make the choice. Hillary included.

Dear Daniel, Hillary supporters:
I'm going half-way because I can't fake it and say I love you, after so many months of putting on armor to thicken my skin against attacks thrown at me.
I can only sincerely go half-way at this time.
Would you rather I weakly smile and lie to you? I won't.
I reach out to you not out of desire to use your votes for us to win this fall.
You want to hear that we need you to win? Yes, we do need you to win.
But I do not fear losing, or winning this fall.
Because what's more important is I want to do the right thing for the right reasons.
I wish to meet you half-way, because it's all I can do, all I want to do, and be sincere about it.
Until trust can be reestablished.
Hopefully it won't be long.
Then I can and will fully embrace you, with all my heart, as family.
Without reservations.

Obama is not hungry for power. Just what exactly gave you that impression.
He has been very gracious in every speech. He made the DNC NOT take money from lobbyists and PAC's. If he wanted power, he would have been eagerly seeking their money.
I understand you are sore over the loss. But you have to think about what you are saying a bit here.
Obama is young and yes, he may not have 35 years in Washington. But that is what makes him right for this moment in time. There is no one that has bought into his success, he has done this with the help of people who could only give a few dollars at a time. He just paid off his school loans because he did not take a high paying cooperate job after school. He was in Chicago, on the streets helping the poor get what they needed.
Compare the issues and where he stands and those of Hillary. They are very similar.

DIRECTIONS
Place water, salt, carrots, 1/2 of the bell pepper, celery, beet, tomatoes, and quartered potatoes in a large stock pot over high heat. Bring to a boil.
Melt 1/3 cup butter in a separate skillet over medium heat. Saute onions in butter until tender, approximately 5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, reduce heat to medium low, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove 1/2 cup of sauce from skillet, and set aside. Stir half of the cabbage into the skillet with remaining sauce, and continue simmering 5 minutes more, or until tender.
Remove beet from boiling liquid and discard. Remove potatoes with a slotted spoon or tongs, and place in a bowl with remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and the cream. Mash together until smooth.
Return the 1/2 cup of reserved onion-tomato sauce to the stock pot. Stir in diced potatoes, and simmer until just tender but still firm, approximately 5 minutes. Increase heat to a low boil, and stir in remaining cabbage, tomato sauce, and mashed potatoes. Reduce heat and simmer a few minutes more. Stir in remaining bell pepper, season with black pepper, and serve.

Margarita Mix is super easy to make, even from scratch. I don't have a recipe, but I was a bartender, so what you're going to make is a mix on the stove of a few cups each (equal amounts, but you can adjust by taste) of sugar, water, orange juice (strained) and lime juice (strained). Boil a little while on low, then refrigerate up to a week. It should be slightly thick. If it's not thick enough, add more sugar and the juices and try again.
For the margarita, use a good quality shot and a half tequila over ice in a glass with a salted rim (use rock salt, wet the rim and then dip), and top with sweet and sour.
If you want it fancy, add as splash of grand marnier. People do all sorts of things to their margaritas.
Garnish as you like best, either with a lime or an orange wedge, or these stacked with a pineapple wedge on a large skewer looks nice.
Happy trails!

Good recipe for borscht. Mine is different. I don't use tomato; up the beets to about 3 - 4 large; use more dill; and squeeze lemon juice (one lemon.) Will try yours, though. I also use good quality chicken stock for the base. Thanks! Kathy

Senator Obama will not be forced into anything! He has established a three-member panel, including Caroline Kennedy, who will be vetting prospective VP choices. That is the method he has chosen to proceed with. It will not be circumvented.

Again a problem, she did not win the popular vote under any legitimate counting method. And, even if you include MI in the count with the soviet style me-only ballot the popular vote has never been the metric used to determine the winner since many caucus states don't tally the popular vote and hence wouldn't report.

I love the British press sometimes. They're a lot more clear-eyed sometimes and they have a keen grasp of political machinations.
While I don't agree with everything the Times publishes, they always have a unique perspective that you often don't get in the American Press.

Every single one of the people in my precinct has always told me they would support Obama. Many people do like both. I have had many conversations with the supporters of Hillary here in Iowa, and more than not are true democrats and will vote for the person who won the nomination.
there were not 12,000 Obama supporters there to begin with, but there were 12,000 Obama supporters after the convention.
I am sure there were a few like you that want to force the issue, they left.
I can tell you right now, that if the shoe was on the other foot. Barack would have made a very strong statement for us NOT to engage in this kind of activity that you are participating in. Just like when he told us not to show up at the DNC rules and committee meeting. By now Barack would have made a public statement not to carry on this way and on the night of the final primary he would have congratulated her on her win of the nomination. He would not have waited so long.
I understand that you are either upset, or that you are one of the many McCain supporters that we have been getting here pretending to be a Hillary supporter.
I guess that is why we have free speech. It is up to us to tell you what the true story is.

According to the latest poll, Obama already has the support of more than 80% of the Democrats. He won 48.1% of the popular vote and Clinton won 47.9%, does the math in your world somehow transform that remaining 4% into more than 32% without Clinton supporters?

Daniel -- I heard and saw for myself the vast majority of Clinton supporters cheering and clapping enthusiastically when Mrs. Clinton said that all Dems must work to get Obama elected. My ears and eyes do not deceive.
The idea you are continuing to drive that 17+ million Clinton supporters will not vote Obama unless she is on the ticket as VP is inaccurate. In fact, many of those 17+ milion voters came to Obama's side long before yesterday. Others have come since she suspended her campaign yesterday understanding that this is not about one presidential candidate, but that it is about the people of the Democratic party and what is needed to move this country forward.
I hope with time that you can come to that same conclusion. I, for one, would have voted for Clinton had she won the nomination even though I do not think she was the better candidate because she would have made a very good president and she is heads and tails over any other candidate out there, including Nader! Nader does not have a chance and you saw what happened in 2000, putting Bush in office.

Do 5 regional "town hall" meetings NW, SW, NE, SE and throw in a Mid west some where (Iowa? hint, hint) and let the two "debate" each other the first hour and then let the people ask questions for the second hour. Make them stand up the whole time.

I have an intuition that since Wall Street investors control so much corporate behavior, why not bring Wall Street investment to the average consumer as an economic force. Through "fireside chats", train the average Americans to take adavantage of their new investment group(s)/opportunities (high enrollment, low investment) that you design (or have experts design). The new American investor (the average person) would now have a voice in the direction of the investment/corporate economy giving more power to the many and less to the few. Let some Wall Street exec.'s with integrity work it out and head the funds. Could be a windfall.

For a good laugh, check out the "John McCain Timeline!" Not only do you get a picture of how old he really is, for some odd reason, he thinks that the only history that matters is war history, that the Persian gulf involvement was only a few days long, and that the Civil Rights movement mysteriously ended in 1968 with MLK's assassination. One of the commentators stated that because McCain was in captivity for 5 years and was released after the war was over, he never had real closure, hence his fascination with war and his obsessive desire to "win" the war in Iraq. If this is true, then he does not have the best interest of the soldiers at heart because he has a win at all costs attitude. (I hope I explained this segment correctly and my post makes sense.)

Shelley, please see my profile and blog page. I am a former Hillary supporter who made the switch on Wednesday June 4th to start working to elect Barack Obama.
I stayed loyal to Hillary until Michigan & Florida were settled; waited until South Dakota and Montana officially closed the primary season. I, too, had the same fleeting thoughts you did about staying home. BUT...
Truthfully, the differences in policies between the two have always been minimal. Both are extremely talented and committed candidates. But Barack won.
Why vote for him? He's smart; committed; collaborative; creative; Gen X & Y focused (our future voters!;)charismatic; visionary; forward thinking; and he can speech-make like I've haven't seen in decades. Yes, a lot like MLK, JFK, RFK. If he runs the country like he ran his campaign we're in good shape. What an organizer! None of this diminishes Hillary or her accomplishments. It's just another perspective. To elect him doesn't diminish HER.
We can't roll the dice that without our support and unity Obama will get elected. This election is too important. To quote the great Satchel Paige, "Don't look back (somebody might be gaining on you)"
What if McCain got elected? Remember 2000? Look at the last 8 years. Can you gamble on more of the same? Iraq war and occupation for 100 years? No healthcare? Jobs? Infrastructure? Economy? Environment? Continued foreign oil dependence? Roe vs. Wade? The Supreme Court appointments (a very real possibility for the next President. Check out the ages of the moderate Jurists to send a shudder down your spine.)
Read my first blog, if you send me a friend request, I will talk you down off the ledge as a former Hillary supporter.
Watch her speech yesterday again. Better yet, read the full text, really focus on what she said. I re-read it this morning and cried. Not for "woulda, shoulda, coulda" but for the future. And for what she accomplished. And for what we need for America. Both Hillary & Barack love this country. Their differences are minimal.
Think of it - 36 million united, passionate, committed Democrats, AMERICANS!, moving in one stream, in one mind, taking back the country. A voting tsunami! YES, WE CAN! Kathy

Good question! OK, listening to him speak, I probably felt like he might not have the ability to actually accomplish what he wants to accomplish. I think our country is in the worst shape I've ever seen it in my lifetime and felt it would take a seasoned leader to push us back on course.
So why do you think he can accomplish what he wants to? I get his stand on issues and I agree with him (we are of the same philosophical thinking after all).
The other thing that has really been bothering me (should you care to help me with this as well) is that he didn't seem to connect well with the "average joe"...he's very intelligent, much like John Kerry, but that, historically, hasn't set well with the general voting population that watches (forgive the stereo-typing) Fox News and thinks emails saying he's a muslim are fact...you know what I mean?

answer 1: how do we know any candidate will accomplish what they say they will? Hillary did not get her health care plan passed when she worked so hard for it in the 90s. I see first of all he is sticking to his words, keeping the lobbyists and PAC's out of the picture as he has done in his campaign and now has made the DNC do shows me that he will stick to his word. He also helped wright and get passed a sweeping ethics reform that lets us all click on a website and see what the government is spending OUR money on....there is more, I am tired and trying to think...
Answer 2: I can tell you that he did connect with the average joe and working public when given the chance. Only the media made a point of this. Any and every state he was in and was able to spend time in he did connect. I think that the muslim email is just turning into a joke at this point for many people. More people will take a look at him now that he is on top. People will do some research and there will be more lies out thier. But we all as Americans know how the race goes, the republicans put out some bad smear on the Dem. The only thing, thanks to the fight with Hillary for so many months, all of it is known now.
There are some people that just wont vote for Barack, but there are about the same amount out there that would have never voted for Hillary.

The media didn't tell me he doesn't connect with average Joe. That was my own observation. I live in a very red state. And you're right, there are those who put all sort of stuff on Hillary that she doesn't do or say (you did that in an earlier post) and in my state there are those that hate her, but can't tell you why, they just do.
What I worry about that is my observation that when he speaks he is very intellectual. Personally I LOVE that. But after what they did to John Kerry, I'm leary. Eighteen million have voted for Barack so far....there were 105 million who voted in the presidential election in 2004 and Kerry couldn't seem to get through to those people...I was stunned at the time, I didn't get it. So I fear I see that in Obama now.

Though I suspect you could do either with Barack.
I see where you're coming from, particularly in the context of voters who want someone they can relate to. But keep in mind, voters could definitely relate to Dubya 4 and 8 years ago and look where we are today.

Also I think we have seen in this campaign that he has stood up to criticism and some pretty bad press for weeks on end when it came to Wright, and Rezco, the "Bitter" comments and the like.
Barack has made some pretty tough choices already, standing up to Hillary and McCain on the gas tax holiday. I was on board with Obama, because I drive 46 miles one way to work everyday, and I have a job that I get called back to work frequently so I spend about 300 dollars on gas a month if not more. it would only save me 15 dollars. Yeah that is money, but I want the roads to be in good shape to, and a gas tax holiday would have meant a loss of 6 million dollars to the roads. We dont need that!

Shelly, I started out as a skeptic myself. After getting burned by so many presidents who didn't deliver, I was cynical too.
But this group of people - people like Laura Hubka who made literally thousands of phone calls to neighbors and friends in Iowa - made me a believer.
It really stared to hit after Iowa - the reality that we might be getting it right this time. I have been very impressed with my local campaign organization in Nashville.
It's ok to be skeptical. But don't let that stop you from pursuing your big dreams and goals in 2008. Protect your heart, but don't be afraid to try.
If a skinny kid with a funny name could become the Democratic nominee, then anything is possible.

That's why I bring up Laura - she was calling people in Iowa, then she'd get on the blog and tell us about the progress, and ask us for encouragement, and we'd give her updates. And she'd ask for a piece of information or an article, and we'd send her a link to it.
And remember - Laura is someone who had never voted before. She hadn't ever been involved in politics or been excited about a candidate.
It's hard to explain ... the only analogy I can think of is the fact that a lot of loyal Hillary supporters were involved because they wanted a woman as president. But most of us weren't supporting Obama because he's black, or biracial, or a man, or from Hawaii. Most of us started supporting Barack because he represents something different and because he's wanting government by the people and for the people - not government that stands for us, but government that is truly run by us.
Does this make sense?

Ben,
Please see my post below this a bit where I gave you insite into why Hillary supporters chose her. Hillary supporters did not support her just because she is a woman. I explained it in that post. If you are going to work to get people on Barack's side, you must understand their perspective. At least enough to be effective in obtaining what you want. And what you want are the number of votes he's gotten in the primary TIMES 3. That's alot of people.

Asuming that Obama becomes POTUS and that Hillary is his VEEP, can she run against him in 2012?
(BTW, anyone know if Big Brown faded because he was off his meds?)

I think the country has had 8 years of "average-joe" and look where it has gotten us?
Ok, first off let me just say that the fact that the average population does not value and respect education is appalling!
This is where Obama as an amazing inspirational speaker comes in. His speeches are incredibly intelligent and logical but they are also emotional and heartfelt. I have a masters degree, but end up crying after he speaks. Great speakers have used this tactic forever to connect with those people who are only interested in image and personal connection. FDR, Churchill, JFK, and Clinton all did this.

Meredith! I am sooo with you on your first statement!! Look where we are because people will NOT take the time to get the facts!
But...it is what it is and those people have to vote for our candidate or we're left stunned like we were in '04. Bush was so bad at that time how could anyone have actually voted for him, let alone enough for him to win again??
Barack has to connect to those voters. He has to.

The Democratic message connects to those voters.
That's why the Republicans are left grasping at straws, trying to connect Obama with Jeremiah Wright or Bill Ayers or Tony Rezko. The truth is, none of those people represent who Obama is. We need the support of our fellow Democrats to take on the Republican attack machine.
And here's the kicker, for me ... in 1998, Democrats rallied around Bill and Hillary in spite of the fact that Bill was screwing around with someone else. Hillary "circled the wagons" against the perceived vast right-wing conspiracy (which insulted me ... I am not a conspirator but I don't like people having sex with their subordinates at work).
But when Barack started getting attacked by the right wing smear machine, did Hillary support Barack? No. She added to it - saying she thought Obama's comments about people turning bitter and getting alienanted (when she herself said "screw em" about those same working-class white southern men after the 1994 elections).
That's the dynamic that I saw - especially after Super Tuesday when Maggie Williams took over the Clinton campaign.

And just to piggyback on what Laura said about Average Joes - it's all about the state organization. Clinton OWNED the state organizations in California, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, etc. She had key surrogates and long-standing contacts in those states. Meanwhile, the McCain campaign launched a full-frontal assault with the help of the 18 million Clinton supporters out there, and together they have managed to really beat up on Obama (Jeremiah Wright, "bittergate", NAFTA goofiness which turned out to be lies from the Canadian government, attacking Michelle for saying she is proud of her country with Barack working as a leader (which was totally out of context), Sean Hannity harping on Obama's connection with Bill Ayers, etc.).
Rush Limbaugh, Townhall.com, and pretty much the entire right-wing has spent the past 3 months doing nothing ... except attacking Obama. McCain had the nomination locked after Super Tuesday. So all the Republicans had to do was focus on what Rush Limbaugh called "Operation Chaos". (See Al Giordano's blog at "The Field" for more on that and how the votes swung to Clinton after the GOP finished the nomination).
So, what we needed after March 4 was unity. The Obama campaign made a decisive effort to pivot from focusing on Hillary to focusing on the general election. After keeping it close in Pennsylvania, the Obama campaign shifted gears and all of us slowed down our pace.
The voters in WV, PR, KY, etc., were not really educated about Obama. It's not a matter of disliking Obama. It's a matter of not knowing who Obama is.
Hope that helps. I've been watching all of this very closely over the past 6 months.

Well those arent issues you are passionate about but:
The second is easy. I think he will connect with them when they hear his story. Having said that you should want to vote for him more because of that since it appear you are saying you are worried he might lose. The best way to prevent that would be to vote for him.
I think when people hear he grew up with a single mom, until recently was paying off debts etc they will see he is quite close to them. Part of what he must do is let people hear that story. SOme will be from using others. Id also point out he didnt not win them they voted for someone else who had lots of appeal. During the Clinton presidency many people did well financially. the familiarity in part helped. So they voted for someone else not just against him.
As to accomplish he has already done so much. From not great circumstances, single mom, food stamps etc he used his gifts to get to Harvard, do law, first AA leader of law review. On to local government where he was successful in working across the aisle and now into the Senate.
He has shown the judgement re Iraq, Afghanistan and the gas tax holiday that is necessary to lead. You should take comfort that those he works with have seen fit to endorse him so they clearly see something special as well.
It doesnt address any issues that you may care about but hits those points a little

Along with many things he has in common with Hil, I think he is a better speaker, a better diplomat, a better representation of the melting-pot-America, the environment seemed to be more important to him, he has proven his political genius with how fast he moved up the ranks, he has a fresh outlook on Washington because he hasn't been there that long, he talks about things that politicians usually don't talk about and (this was the clincher, I think) when people try to suck him into silly illogical political media stuff, instead of playing into it or refusing to answer, he points out how silly an illogical it is and forces people to realize what is really important: the problems that need to be fixed!

I agree with you on that media! Several months ago I noticed how my beloved CNN and MSNBC became so "sensational" and commented to my friends that I see the change...they're trying to sway like Fox news has for the past several years. I joked that it was kind of a "if you can't beat them join them." And that was before they started calling for Hillary to drop out prematurely a few months ago...after that I wasn't just amused, I was angry! :-)
My favorite was when Bill Clinton told them like it was and Soledad O'Brien got hysterical over it. :-D

CNN and MSNBC started getting hit by "sniper fire" from Republican operatives who were looking to discredit Obama. And when the Clinton campaign "piled on" or "threw Obama under the bus", it just added more fuel to the fire.

I know that Hillary supporters that I have spoken to think that the words "he is inspirational" is naive and shows my lack of involvement in politics. But the truth is that having a president that inspires us, is so important. We need more people involved and Barack Obama asks us to get involved. No other candidate made me feel like I needed to do anything. When I hear Obama speak, and talk about getting out there and making a difference, I want to do it! I have done it! I have registered voters, I have gotten everyone I know to caucus and vote in the primarys that we just had. I have read, and read, and read about politics, Iran, Iraq, Sunnis, Shiites, Muslim, Jewish. I have gone to the meetings and went on to become the vice chair of my counties democratic party.

I've gotten into very heated political discussions with right-wingers...probably too often...but I was seeing where my country was heading and they were oblivious Bush followers.
But, I'm learning thru this election that I guess I'm not necessarily going to vote for the Democrat because he's the Democrat. I'd stay home before I voted for McCain though. No final decisions on that. But, as I said in an earlier post, I can't see me not voting. But who knows...

By the way ... I was one of the people who was angry at Moveon.org in 1998-99, because I took Bill Clinton's cheating seriously and felt that it was terrible. I'm a social conservative, very offended by the idea of affairs in the Oval Office with interns.
I voted Bush in 2000, in part because I was wanting to dissociate from anything "Clinton" (like Al Gore, who was his VP). I didn't vote in 2004.
What I realized is that, especially after 9/11, the tone in America shifted and the neoconservatives started to take over the Republicans from the "compassionate conservatives" like me who got Bush elected.
Bush's abuse of faith and his shredding of the Constitution became very troubling to me. It's like "the ends justify the means".

Everything Bush and Cheney have done you could have known they would do during his 2000 campaign if you had researched them a bit. The California Energy Crisis, the "secret" Energy Task Force meeting in April of 2001 (BEFORE 9/11) where Cheney was looking at maps of Iraqi oil fields when it was illegal to do business with or in Iraq due to sanctions in place at the time, refusing to disclose who was in those meetings (Ken Lay among them).
I'm very sorry that you felt that spending $50 million on an investigation that turned from an investigation into financial corruption (which they could not find) into a VERY sneaky and covert personal assault on the President of the United States in front of the world was somehow helpful to this country. So helpful that you disregarded the better candidate in 2000 for the corrupt one.
I'm sorry, but I won't be able to forgive you for that.
But glad you've seen the light now :-)

Mccain is the total opposite of Obama.
He for one wants to continue the war in Iraq for upwards of maybe 100 years.
He wants to continue the economics that Bush believes in.
He will appoint a judge on the Supreme court and they would no doubt over turn Roe vs Wade.
He has already admitted that he knows nothing regarding Economics.
Please do your research on Mccain and I promise you your decision would be easy.

Thanks Amanda, but I've been doing my research for decades. McCain was once an admirable "straight talker"...one I would have either feared that he was electable, or maybe would have even voted for. But in the past 5 years or so he has become an RNC puppet like the rest. It kills me to hear the media talking heads lable him a "maverick"...because he is not. Not anymore. He's under the RNC thumb...just like the good boy you have to be to be "allowed" to be the RNC nominee.

Shelly,
Well, based upon the way he conducted his campaign, I'd say that he will definitely put competent people in place, unlike what we have now. and he will manage them well, as he has throughout this campaign.
But more importantly than that, he has a huge grass-roots organization in all 50 states that are committed to the work begun in the primaries. That work isn't just to elect him; it's to work toward implementing change in the country.
Think about the choices here -- John McCain wants to leave us all hanging to shake with the 'markets'. Barack Obama wants us to make a difference, and not just by sitting passively by and waiting for the government to do our work for us.
Finally, when I think about the image of our country and how badly it's been damaged by the yokel in office right now, and the dignity Obama can bring to it, there is absolutely no question in my mind that this man, in this time, can restore our country and undo much of the horrible, despicable work the republicans have done to ruin us all.

Shelly,
Will you come back? I am too tired to post tonight, but I will say:
Obama has walked the ordinary life like most ordinary American citizens.
He continues to be discriminated against for his name and the color of his skin.
He taught US Constitutional law and wants equality and fairness for every person.
He is up-to-date on today's technology which can benefit and advance our country from lagging further behind in jobs, economy, education and security.
He uses language that even my 14 yr old daughter can understand and feels so honored to hopefully have a President that she can look up to, respect and honor (as do I).
Most people only complain what is wrong, Obama has worked his way up to change it. This is why he refuses lobbyists money... he is well-informed as to why nothing can ever get changed to improve the lives of everyday citizens.
His communication and listening skills are incredible... If any negotiating is to be done, he is the one we can count on for the BEST results inside and outside of our country.
I feel he genuinely cares about our country and all people. To me, his actions have not denied that he doesn't.
He is good to look at and gives peace in his spoken words that have become an addiction of mine to hear.
He is a special human being.
Good-night. I am so very glad you are here.
P.S.~ McCain terrifies me and my daughter as well.

I wonder if the huge support he receives from all over the world will convince you that he will be able to make the change.
And by the way, he never said that this campaign is about him only. Look at the top of this page: "I'M ASKING YOU TO BELIEVE. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington... I'm asking you to believe in yours." He asks you if you are ready to be the change you seek.
If you are willing to do it, then change is gonna come. So may people have been involved in this process and they have made history. He has won a formidable and "inevitable" candidate for president. He was down 30pts several months ago and now, he has won! This is HUGE, don't you agree with me?
Please listen to his speeches, he asks you to believe in yourself and your ability to make change. When he won, he thanked his staff, the volunteers, and other people. "this is because of you that I can stand here today..."
So it's up to you to decide - whether you yourself are ready for change or not.
Best wishes from SIngapore,
A friend of yours
BTW, you can check out his speeches on youtube

Thank you for your post. Those are good things.
I'm going to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about Hillary. Maybe it will make me feel better and also help Barack supporters understand a bit about her supporters.
Hillary worked as a law clerk during the Nixon impeachment. She's been a lifelong Democrat. She is intelligent, gracious and people from her college days speak highly of how kind and positive of a person she was. She wrote a book called It Takes a Village after Bill became president. It showed her compassion and care for our society. She worked hard on a health care plan...and it failed (another plus in her column today, because to have tried and failed is to have learned a lot). She suffered the humiliation brought on by Bill and the RNC attack machine, and she suffered quietly and kept her dignity. She became Senator for NY and is respected highly by her colleagues on both sides of the aisle. She has campaigned tirelessly for months because she wants to be president? Yes, but also because her heart aches for the mess this country is in. You do not spend your entire life as a Democrat and not have your heart hurt over the mess we're in. She is sincere. Is she tough? You bet she is. Is she a bitch? Maybe, but I think we needed a bitch on our side right now.
It saddens me to hear people say such awful things about this woman who has worked hard her whole life, failed, been humiliated, and yet still she keeps working for the average American. Look at her daughter? What an undeniable example of a beautiful, intelligent young woman. So unlike the Bush twins. Hillary is her mother and that is why Chelsea is as she is.
When it might have been easier to just quit this race, she didn't because she promised her supporters she would not quit on them. And she kept her word. She did not run for president in 2004 like everyone encouraged her to do because when elected Senator she said she would finish her term as Senator and would not try to run for president in 2004. And she kept her word. She said she would support Obama if he were the nominee and she kept her word.
Please give her the respect she has earned.
