Kathy, 54, of Toms River, NJ, already has 15 people coming to her Convention Weekend of Action projects this weekend. This comes after helping organize a successful Convention Watch Party last night with nearly 100 people in attendance. Along with other Obama supporters across America, she’ll be celebrating Barack’s nomination this weekend by registering voters and helping to build our movement of change.
Kathy first heard about Barack Obama from her 16-year-old daughter, Rebecca.
“It was February 5th, Super Tuesday, and my daughter said to me, ‘You’re voting for Barack Obama, right?’ And I said, ‘who?’”
That day, Kathy cast her vote for Hillary Clinton, but after hearing Senator Obama’s speech later that night, she thought, “I have got to learn more about this guy.”
I found his speech from the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and then I read both of his books. Shortly after that, I went to my.barackobama.com and set up a profile, and I’ve been getting involved ever since. We need Barack Obama to be our next president.
For Kathy and her family, the current job market is a major concern as she thinks about the future.
I lost my job in September, and I’m looking at my 28-year-old daughter who hasn’t been able to find a job in her field, all while trying to pay off her student loans. My son who is 20 will be graduating from college soon and getting into the job market.
Kathy strongly supports Barack Obama’s plan for students to receive a $4,000 tuition credit in exchange for service, saying, “It’s great for the kids. Otherwise, with all this debt after school, they are falling behind.”
Healthcare is another important issue for Kathy in this election.
As a cancer survivor, being able to maintain my health is very important to me. If anything were to happen, and I wasn’t insured, I would be one of those people who lose their homes, so it’s absolutely essential that we elect Barack Obama to get healthcare on the right track.
Kathy had never donated or volunteered in a political campaign before this year.
I grew up during the 60’s, and I never really got involved, but I always felt that part of me was an activist. So this year, when I felt like I had an opportunity to make a change, I couldn’t just sit by.
After initially getting involved online through my.barackobama.com, Kathy felt the need to do something more and take action out into her community.
This weekend, as part of the Weekend of Action, Kathy will be registering new voters on Saturday in Toms River, NJ, and Sunday at the Seaside Heights Boardwalk in Ocean County, NJ.
I’ve made over 100 contacts over the past six weeks, so I have a lot of people to reach out to and have them come volunteer. With this being Labor Day weekend, this is a good chance for us to sign up a lot of new voters.
This weekend represents a great opportunity to get involved with the campaign. Whether you’re an old hand at organizing or new to the political process, the Weekend of Action is a great way to meet other supporters in your community and be a part of our movement to bring change to Washington.
Sign up to attend a Weekend of Action event near you, or create your own – and bring change to your own community.
