Her speech last night has to be seen to be believed. It was a nasty and sarcastic screed against the dread Liberals and Democrats. She called herself an Pit Bull with lipstick. I thought it was an appropriate description. One thing in particular caught my attention, and made me mad enough to write a letter to the editor of the Chieftain. Hopefully they'll print it. Governor Palin, in her speech at the RNC convention, made a mocking remark apparently directed at Senator Obama’s work as a community organizer. She said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities." The nastiness and ignorance of that remark is stunning. Several years ago, I had the great honor of working with many of the community organizers here in Socorro County. These people work with determination and compassion, for little or no pay, to help the most needy and vulnerable. Some of the crucial services they provide are: Pre-natal care, transportation, and other assistance for mothers-to-be in need; tutoring in ESL (English as a second language), pre-GED, basic reading, and vocational computer classes; assistance for teen parents to graduate, become economically independent, and develop positive parenting and relationship skills; food, clothing, and other services to the homeless and needy, etc. These are only a few of the services that community organizers provide. They also act as advocates for their clients, and advocate for solutions to health and social problems. These organizations and the people who work for them deserve praise, not mockery. Across the nation, community organizers work tirelessly to help those in need. The Bible says that we will be judged by how we treat the least of us. Community organizers don't just talk the talk. They walk the walk. When John McCain's running mate derided community organizers, she made a mockery of the dedication and hard work of community organizers across the nation.
